White Devil of the Moon

The war with the Dark Kingdom is going badly, and the Sailor Senshi naturally have a problem. Usagi never became Sailor Moon, nor is she the Moon Princess, so the leadership of the Senshi falls to Minako, as Sailor Venus. All of Sailor Mars' attempts to divine the location of the Moon Princess have, so far, failed. But just as they are about to give up hope, Mars finally locates the Moon Princess; her name is Takamachi Nanoha, age 16. She's back on planet for her brother's wedding.

That's the good news. The bad news is that Nanoha's still recovering from her injuries incurred during the timeskip between A's and Striker S. Luna attempts to make contact, but is brushed off by Fate, who has made it her personal mission that nothing interrupt Nanoha's recovery. Things begin to go downhill from there...

Even worse, Queen Beryl has noticed that her most hated rival, the Moon Princess, has returned from wherever she was hiding, and she's not about to let things go, no sir.

• A Handful for An Eye: Ami throws a handful of magically created ice crystals into the face of a youma to distract it long enough to transform.
• Alternate Universe: Nanoha got injured at 16, not 12 like in canon. This is an author-induced change invoked partially to reduce the squick factor in the Nanoha/Mamoru pairing and partially to assist with the problem of two middle-school students living on their own and not attending school (High school being optional in Japan).
• Anger Born of Worry: Fate scolds Nanoha for overexerting herself again, telling her how much she's worried about her.
• Anvil on Head: Mercury fires a Shabon Spray Freezing into a cloud, creating the largest hailstone in history, which lands on top of Zoicite.
• Awesome By Analysis: The TSAB considers the Senshi this. They managed to fight against a foe with superior power and numbers on their own, with little in the way of supplemental aid, little-to-no training, and no relief, for over a year before they finally received reinforcements from TSAB agents who were alerted to the situation. Fate doesn't think that she could last a few weeks in a similar situation.
• Back From the Dead: Alicia
• Bad Boss: When anything goes wrong with her plans, Beryl will torture someone for being at best incompetent and at worst a potential traitor.
• Badass Family: The Takamachis. Apart from Nanoha, both Shiro and Miyuki had their chances to shine.
• Badass Normal: Miyuki, who after being kidnapped by Nephrite after a failed attempt at setting up a trap for him, wakes up in the Dark Kingdom in the throne room, surrounded by Youma, Nephrite, and Queen Beryl. She then proceeds to kneel before Beryl as she is told to for just long enough to have them start gloating, and then immediately sprints towards Beryl, pulls out two knives she had hidden on her, fights the Youma, forcing them to kill each other through friendly fire, positions herself so that Nephrite's attack hits Queen Beryl, and then comes within a hair's breadth of bisecting Beryl from head to toe before she gets taken out by a desperate but successful attack from Beryl. She still manages to cut Beryl's face.
• Berserk Button: Attacking any of the close family of Fate and Nanoha will make them turn off the non-lethal Power Limiter normally in place the Nanohaverse and they will end you. First shown when Nanoha disintegrates Jadeite with a Divine Buster, and shown for Fate when Precia lost her temper at Alicia and hit her with a lighting spell. Suddenly, Big Fat Laser Sword through the chest.
  • On a less life-threatening sense, Ami doesn't appreciate Alicia talking about Precia without knowing of her actions- which include putting Ami's mother into a coma. Although it gets much more dangerous when she encounters agents of the Dark Kingdom trying to kill her comatose mother. Maybe the villains should just avoid threatening any relatives of any member of the main cast just to be on the safe side.
• Big Damn Heroes: Sailor Venus pulls one of these in Chapter 5 when Jadeite's forces attack the Takamachi wedding, distracting Jadeite at a crucial moment and giving Nanoha enough time to change into her Barrier Jacket and charge up the Divine Buster.
• Bleed'Em and Weep: Fate, after killing Precia.
• Blood From the Mouth: Precia, who is dying from her radiation poisoning.
• Blood-Splattered Wedding Dress: Miyuki's bridesmaid's gown, after the fight breaks out. The actual bride's dress did not end up like that (or at least not as severely), as Shinobu wasn't participating in the fight.
• Bouquet Toss: Minako would have caught it, if she hadn't immediately rushed to Nanoha's side after her collapse.
• Boxed Crook: The Sailor Senshi, having assaulted Fate and Arf in their attempts to reach out to Nanoha, get the same treatment as some of Nanoha's former enemies did, avoiding formal punishment by means of community service.
• Calling The Old Woman Out: Nanoha plainly tells the spirit of Queen Serenity that she and her advisers failed to keep Princess Serenity's behavior in check or even groomed her to be a responsible leader. Therefore, they are partly responsible for the disaster that ended the Moon Kingdom. Furthermore, Nanoha insists her name is not Serenity, and that her mother is Momoko Takamachi.
  • Fate to Precia, after Precia loses it and attacks Alicia in anger.
• Cast From Hit Points: Hotaru's healing magic, because of some unidentified force that is draining her of life. As such, if the problem is not resolved it will most likely become Cast From Lifespan. Fans of Sailor Moon will recognize what this most likely is.
  • Nanoha and Shamal both realize the similarities to Hayate's situation, and share some of the information with Hotaru. They don't mention the defense program.
    • Technically, they do, they mention that they've seen that sort of thing before, and that they ended up blowing it up to get rid of it.
• Chronic Hero Syndrome: Nanoha. Better than half the conflict in the first part of the story stems from this; if the Senshi succeed in asking Nanoha for her help, she'll try to help them as best she can regardless of what it may cost her.
  • Hotaru is willing to heal anyone she sees get hurt even though she knows that most of her patients hate her and will only hate her more afterwards. This behavior doesn't change even after learning that due to her Cast From Hit Points problem, continuing to do so could result in her ending up crippled or dead.
• Cleaning Up Romantic Loose Ends: Mamoru gets paired off with Rei in one of the omakes.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Raising Heart in one of the omakes, destroys the Transformation Trinket Nanoha gets from the arcade machine.

“I Am Your Device, Master. You Do Not Need Another.”

• Conflict Ball: The author forces Luna and the Senshi to juggle several of these for the first few chapters. Luna arguably hasn't stopped since the fic began.
• Crazy Prepared: This trope, more than anything, is why Jadeite's attempt on Nanoha's life failed. Everyone at the wedding who could fight came armed and prepared to do so, just in case.
  • Justified. If you've seen Triangle Heart 3 ～sweet songs forever～, you know what happened the last time the Takamachi family had a get-together.
• Curb Stomp Battle: Nanoha, meet Jadeite. Jadeite, meet Nanoha's Divine Buster.
  • Both of the attempts by Tuxedo Kamen and the Inner Senshi to get rid of Fate fail. Rather badly.
  • Vivio fights Chibi-Usa in an omake at the end of chapter 10, the 'fight' lasts 10 seconds
  • Miyuki vs Beryl, an army of Youma and Nephrite. Unfortunately for Beryl and co, Miyuki's last name is Takamachi, meaning she is the one doing the stomping. Beryl only wins by pure luck.
• Darker and Edgier: Mildly so. The Sailor Moon half of the plot has some faint overtones of Sailor Nothing; the war has turned into a stalemate, the Senshi are demoralized and all of them really want to go back to their old lives, Usagi isn't around to hold the group together, and the girls treat each other more like coworkers than the Nakama they were in canon because they have nothing in common with each other.
• Dark Magical Girl: Fate, causing another misunderstanding when Luna sees her Barrier Jacket.
• Deadly Dodging: A key part of Miyuki's strategy when attempting to take out Beryl.
• Disco Dan: Despite all reason, Luna continues to act as if the Moon Kingdom is still in existence, just severely diminished. This leads to problems when she refuses to explain herself to Fate during the early chapters due to her, now nonexistent, position as one of Queen Serenity's advisers.
• Do Not Call Me Paul: Inverted, Nanoha rejects her past name and sticks with her birth name. At least part of this is due to the I Hate Past Me trope further down the page.
• Due to the Dead: Rei holds a funeral for all of the dead bodies in the Moon Palace.
• Early-Bird Cameo: Alicia's first best friend on Earth? Hotaru Tomoe.
• Everyone Could See It: Apparently pretty much all of Nanoha and Fate's friends had a betting pool going on when they'd hook up for several years.
• Finger-Twitching Revival: Alicia, revealing that stolen life energy can be used to revive her.
• For Want of a Nail: According to the prologue, it seems the whole reason that 'Princess Serenity' was reborn as Nanoha rather than Usagi (who does exist, just not as anyone significant) was because Queen Serenity flubbed the reincarnation spell due to her injuries.
• Flanderization: Luna's character has been stripped down to almost nothing. See the entry for Disco Dan; that's more or less her entire purpose in the story.
• Game-Breaking Injury: One of the factors about Nanoha that makes Fate keep rebuffing Luna. After Nanoha kills Jadeite, she faints. Shamal then orders Nanoha not to use any magic for the foreseeable future.
• Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: When Nanoha goes all worrywart about Princess Serenity's memories affecting her psyche, Fate decides to make her feelings known.
• Heel Realization: Precia, in her dying moments, realizes that she should have treated Fate as a daughter and used her remaining time to set things right

Forgive me, Linith. You were right. You were right...

• Heroic BSOD: Mamoru after Nanoha and Fate get together and he realizes just how unlikely he was to get together with her.
• Idiot Ball: Again, Luna and the Senshi for the first few chapters. Also again, Luna apparently doesn't want to let go of it.
• I Hate My Previous Life: Nanoha was very disapproving of how Princess Serenity lived her life. As such it became an Awful Truth for the Senshi as their sacrifices were wasted due to Serenity's suicide.
• Ill Girl: Nanoha, still recovering from her wounds.
• Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Precia, after she crosses the Moral Event Horizon in Fate's eyes by hurting Alicia.
  • Also Zoicite, by Mercury's "Fractal Ice Prison".
• I Need a Freaking Drink: Jupiter's reaction to having the war end because the princess is a lesbian and not interested in Endymion in an omake. The rest of the Senshi agree with her.
• It Got Worse: Nanoha's just agitated her Linker Core again by an unknown amount, while Beryl's discovered that letting Metallia absorb the magic of the Jewel Seeds is giving the monster a major boost towards revival, and now Beryl wants the rest of them.
• Japanese Honorifics: Initially not present, but show up in later chapters.
• Jaw Drop: The Senshi, when they find out that Nanoha is gay in the fic proper.
• Kill It with Ice: Mercury does this very thoroughly when she faces Zoicite. First she locks him inside a large razor-edged fractal ice sculpture, then while he's trying to get out, she drops a car-sized hailstone on his head.
• Kill Screen: Nanoha reaches this in the Sailor V game, which everyone had previously thought to be Unwinnable - on her first try. It required her getting a million points when the previous high score was 150,000. The game ended gracefully without anything strange happening beyond getting extra prizes (a disguise pen, a senshi communicator, and the Sailor Moon transformation brooch - none of which she has actually used.)
  • Justified in that it's actually a Senshi training simulator in disguise and Nanoha is already a veteran Magical Girl.
• Kneel Before Frodo: The four Senshi kneel before Nanoha, prompting Hayate to take a picture before reminding them that when their monarch is in uniform, they must bow rather than kneel.
• Last-Name Basis: Used among the Senshi to indicate that rather than being Nakama, they would not voluntarily associate with one another. Hayate also calls Mars "Hino-san".
• Love Ruins the Realm: As Nanoha points out, the Dark Kingdom invasion is only one possible negative outcome of Serenity's trips to Earth and affair with Endymion.
• Loving a Shadow: Nanoha wonders if Mamoru is doing this with her.
• Mama Wolf: Precia, even more than in canon. Torturing a clone isn't enough, she stoops to the outright murder of the terminally ill in order to try and keep Alicia alive.
  • Along with the murder of people who were likely to recover, and anyone catching her in the act.
  • And yet even this isn't enough to stop her snapping for a second and blasting Alicia with lightning when Alicia sides with Fate over Precia (who has just been torturing Fate in front of her).
• Married to the Job: Nanoha

" as far as (Yuuno) could tell, Nanoha was married to her job. At least, she had been up until her hospital stay forced her to realize that the only serious relationship she had gotten into had turned abusive..."

• Minor Injury Overreaction: Beryl treats the small cut on her face given to her by Miyuki as if it were horrifically disfiguring.
• The Mole: Nephrite as Masato Sanjouin.
  • After Miyuki tries to kill Beryl after being kidnapped, he was locked up under suspicion of being a Reverse Mole.
• Moral Myopia: Luna. She's quickly developing the ire of the readers due to how stubborn she's being about Nanoha becoming a princess.
  • Some reviewers took issue with Vivio defeating Chibi-Usa in the omake for Chapter 10, thus causing her and the future in which she was born to cease to exist, whereas Vivio would most likely still exist even if her mothers never got together. It seems to be only serve the purpose of painting the other future as a bad one because it's built on Reincarnation Romance even though it does not make it a less valid future.
    • Of course, saying Vivio would be fine without Nanoha and Fate sort of ignores a large portion of StrikerS.
  • The Bureau isn't immune to this either. Hayate arrests the Senshi for assaulting Fate in spite of the Senshi being outside the Bureau's jurisdiction -- they aren't interdimensional criminals and Earth isn't a part of the Bureau, so Hayate can't legally arrest them for anything. She does so anyways, and nobody calls her on it.
    • The Senshi do acknowledge that they committed a crime against their princess by attacking one of her friends. From their perspective, the princess deferred the punishment that they knew they deserved to one of her associates.
    • It should be noted that the TSAB's jurisdiction has never been firmly defined, either in MGLN canon or in the fanfic itself. Given that the assault in question was on one of their officers, it was inevitable that they'd get involved.
• Mundane Utility: Ami uses her ice powers to make a glass of lemonade into a snow cone in one omake.
• Murder the Hypotenuse: This seems to be one of the major reason Beryl started her rebellion in the first place, jealous that Prince Endymion chose Princess Serenity over herself. Of course, she's gunning for Nanoha in this universe, so as far as most readers are concerned, her attempt is doomed to failure.
  • The pettiness of starting a war for this is Lampshaded both by the cast and in an Omake in which Nanoha ends the whole war when she points out she's gay.
  • Also, after Miyuki is interrogated by Beryl, she says to her face that Nanoha has no interest in Endymion at all, and is perfectly happy with Fate. And that if Beryl hadn't ordered the attack on the wedding, Nanoha wouldn't have even gotten involved. Beryl goes into a combination of BSOD and denial mode.
• Mythology Gag: Nanoha notices that the bodyguard of a family friend bears a close resemblance to Fate, referencing said bodyguard's existence in Triangle Heart 3 ～sweet songs forever～. At least some wedding guests thought they were siblings.
• Out-of-Character Moment: Some see Nanoha's Calling The Old Woman Out as this, not necessarily because of her arguments (Nanoha is considerably more responsible than Usagi or Serenity), but because throughout, Nanoha is completely blunt and holds nothing back. Others suggest that her emotional state at the time influenced it.
  • Numerous other examples as well for many characters, to the point of being In Name Only in some examples. For instance, when you consider that even Quattro couldn't provoke Nanoha into using lethal force in the main series, her vaporizing Jadeite without so much as batting an eye can't be anything but this.
    • It should be noted that Nanoha had already rescued Vivio by the time she blasted Quattro. Jadeite was still a major threat to not only Nanoha's entire family but dozens of innocents when she blasted him. Additionally she was still injured and likely knew she would only get one shot against what was basically an unknown opponent, it's no wonder she hit him with everything she had.
• Papa Wolf: Shirou tells Jadeite that he won't stand for people threatening his daughter, but soon afterward, Jadeite breaks his arm, making his threat somewhat hollow.
• Poor Communication Kills: Luna never bothers to explain to Fate why she needs to talk to Nanoha. Justified when Artemis later explains that was how he and Luna used to do things back during the Moon Kingdom; they're used to having the authority to get things done without being questioned.
  • If you go over the opening chapters and look at what each party is saying to the other from only one perspective at a time, it's more understandable as to why said poor communication turned out so disastrously. As Fate said, "It doesn't matter what is true, but what the person believes to be true."
• Post Mortem One Liner: "Was there anybody else who had a reason why these two should not be wed?"
• Power Creep, Power Seep: Naturally, there has to be a bit of power level balancing to be done with this sort of crossover, given the two different magics at work. Gets sort of ridiculous in chapter 6, however, where Jupiter is said to have knocked out two TSAB Mooks with her bare hands.
  • Possibly justified – Jupiter is the only one of the Inners with any kind of formal martial arts training, and the average TSAB mook is a Squishy Wizard due to the TSAB putting more focus on magical combat than hand-to-hand. When Makoto trains with Zafira, who is extremely skilled, she gets her ass kicked several times before she manages to win even a single spar.
  • Done extremely weirdly. Word of God says the Senshi are badasses for holding off the Dark Kingdom for a year by themselves and their power levels are roughly equivalent to A-rank mages by the Bureau's reckoning, which is a significant boost over their usual performance. In practice, however, they fight with no more competence than they showed in the anime -- arguably less of it -- and struggle to defeat enemies that A-rank mages should be able to steamroll. For instance, one of Precia's Mecha-Mooks (which they have no reason to hold back against) takes the entire team to bring down after analyzing it for weak points.
• Prophecy Twist: Nephrite foretells that the Moon Princess will come to harm at the wedding ceremony. Beryl takes that to mean that the Moon Princess will die, and has Jadeite attack the wedding. Nanoha lives (of course), but injures herself further after using a Divine Buster on Jadeite.
• Protected by a Child: Alicia tries to do this to get Precia to stop torturing Fate. Precia attacks Alicia for defying her, which angers Fate to the point that she starts fighting back.
• Punctuated for Emphasis:

Fate: "Leave. Nanoha. Alone." Nanoha: "Don't call me that! That selfish, irresponsible, cowardly child is not me! I'm Nanoha, not Serenity! Na. No. Ha!" Nanoha "And they will. Not. Hurt. Anyone. Else."

• Reincarnation Romance: Deconstructed Trope, as Nanoha's persona does not mesh well with Serenity's, which only makes sense considering that the only reason that Nanoha ended up as Serenity's reincarnation was because Queen Serenity botched the Reincarnation spell. As a result, she has nothing in common with Mamoru/Endymion, leaving them unable to re-create their past lives' relationship.
• Relationship Upgrade: Nanoha and Fate as of Chapter 10.
• Ret-Gone: The fate of Chibi-Usa Expy Picoha in an omake when she tries to prevent Nanoha and Fate from becoming friends and is stopped by Vivio.
• Scars Are Forever: Fate still has visible scars on her back from what Precia did to her as a child, it's why she refused to wear an open-backed dress to the wedding.
• Screening the Call: Fate doesn't want Nanoha to return to active duty until she's fully recovered from her injuries, and thus prevents her from finding out the Senshi's reasons for looking for her or that they are looking for her until shortly before the wedding. Not that Beryl's going to take that chance...
• Screw Destiny: In regards to Nanoha/Mamoru vs Nanoha/Fate subplot. Word of God says that Nanoha/Mamoru is not set in stone just because of the Reincarnation Romance angle, and the author has noted in proofreading discussion that Mamoru is making a crucial mistake in thinking of Nanoha as "the Princess" and not as "Takamachi Nanoha".

In Sailor Moon, it is implied that because the Earth Prince and Moon Princess were lovers in their previous lives, they are destined to be lovers again in their current ones. I don't find that plausible. I find the interpretation presented in the Deverry novels by Katherine Kerr to be more likely. In those stories, two people with a strong connection to each other (positive or negative) in one life will be inclined to similar feelings if they meet in another life, but they aren't bound to it. Reincarnated lovers will be inclined to like each other when they meet, making it easier for them to become lovers again, and reincarnated enemies will be inclined to dislike each other, making it easier for them to find a new reason to fight in the current life, but these are not set in stone. Reincarnated enemies can resolve their differences. Reincarnated lovers can end up parting ways. One's previous lives might influence the person they become, but it doesn't define them absolutely. Nanoha is not Princess Serenity. Mamoru is not Prince Endymion.

• • Though technically it took Mamoru and Usagi coming to know each other in their present lives before they actually really liked each other in canon, something that is oftentimes ignored.
  • For what it's worth, many reviewers have noted that Nanoha wouldn't be quite as good a match for him as Usagi is, but take that as you well.
  • For that matter, Nanoha not taking an interest in actually reviving the Moon Kingdom at all, only seeing it as something of historical interest. Luna is not happy about that at all.
• Senseless Sacrifice: The death of the original Sailor Venus, in the eyes of Nanoha. Not because of anything that Venus did, but because Princess Serenity didn't make any effort to make Venus' sacrifice mean anything.
• Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Chibi-Moon tries to do this in the omake of Chapter Ten, since Nanoha and Fate getting together would mean her and the future Moon Kingdom vanishing forever. It, um, doesn't work out too well.
  • Of course, Vivio is under the impression that she's doing the same thing when she stops Chibi-Moon.
• Shout-Out: The disguise pen-fake Nanoha gambit in chapter 12 ends on one of these. The chapter is even called Operation Bowser.

"I'm sorry," Sailor Jupiter said, "But the princess is in another castle."

• Silly Reason for War: The TSAB's opinion of the events that destroyed the Moon Kingdom.
• Social Services Does Not Exist: Averted. A officer tells Precia that Alicia is running afoul of the truancy laws.
  • Later on, Ami/Mercury wonders what will happen to her if the authorities find out about her situation while her mother is still in a coma
• Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace: Miyuki decides to treat Jadeite's attack on her brother's wedding as one of these after the fact (See Post Mortem One Liner).
• Switching POV: The narration switches between focusing on the Nanoha cast and the Sailor Moon cast, which determines which characters are referred to by name or how situations are described. For example, Fate finds "the cat" to be a nuisance who can potentially interrupt Nanoha's recovery, while Luna thinks that "the Dark Senshi" has brainwashed the princess and is threatening the fate of the world. After the two sides start working together, this effect lessens, though.
• Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The Senshi, without Usagi, do not get along as well as in canon.
• Tempting Fate: "At least we aren't likely to have any trouble show up at a wedding." Yeah, sure.
• That One Player: Nanoha, to the Sailor V game. The only thing she found difficult about it was that the console was designed for right-handed players.
• Tranquil Fury: Nanoha is not pleased with her sister getting kidnapped.

As Vita looked up to Nanoha's eyes, she couldn't help the cold pit forming in her stomach. The same cold she had felt when she had seen those eyes leveled at her from a young girl, surrounded by fire. She remembered what she had called the girl back then...

• Transformation Trinket: Nanoha gets one from the Sailor V arcade game. Fate promptly ships it off to the TSAB to be studied when she realized Luna sent it to Nanoha.
• The Unmasqued World: The truth of the wedding attack is public as there are too many witnesses and photos of the Senshi, and Nanoha's family are now being hounded by lots of interested people.
• Unskilled but Strong: The Sailor Senshi, partly due to not operating under the same rules of engagement as the Bureau and partly due to not having much experience, are currently roughly equivalent to A rank, but have the potential to fight at AAA rank level.
• Villain Ball: If Beryl wasn't so determined to kill Nanoha, it's highly likely that Nanoha and Fate would still be suspicious of the Sailor Senshi. Way to go, Beryl...
  • Precia's method of drawing energy at a hospital is arguably too blatant and serves to draw the attention of the TSAB fairly quickly, resulting in Alicia ending up in Bureau custody.
• We Could Have Avoided All This: A common theme in MGLN's first two seasons, and in full force here. Venus even quotes the trope title in Chapter 5.
• Wedding Smashers: Jadeite tries to attack Nanoha at her brother's wedding. Big mistake.
• What the Hell, Hero?: Mercury and Venus call out Mars and Jupiter for their attacks on Fate, noting that, among other things, it makes them harder for Nanoha to trust.
• Wild Cards: Precia and Alicia Testarossa. There is a Melee a Trois between Sailor Mars, Precia Testarossa, and Zoicite.
• Wrong Genre Savvy: Luna takes one look at Fate's barrier jacket -- black color scheme, metal gauntlets, ominous-looking cape, etc etc -- and immediately decides that Fate's a Dark Magical Girl. She's right about that part at least, but because of her belief that Dark Is Evil (True in Sailor Moon, FALSE in Lyrical Nanoha), she makes an immediate jump from Dark Magical Girl to Dark Senshi.
• Wrong Name Outburst: Mamoru addresses Nanoha as Serenity. Given that Nanoha was talking about how much she disapproved of the decisions she made in her previous life at the time, it didn't go over well.
• You're Not My Mother: Nanoha to Queen Serenity, and Fate to Precia.
