The deathmatch FPS for the whole family!--But in all seriousness, Water Warfare is a game based on the old-fashioned sport of running around a playground with a squirt gun and water balloons trying to make everyone else get really, really wet. Which, as it just so happens, does translate well to the FPS deathmatch format. Whodathunkit?
This Wii Ware game was made by Hudson Soft--notably, it's a rarity for Japanese developers to make First-Person Shooter games. Despite coming from the Wii Ware service, this game is noted for being relatively deep: It has four different maps (eight, if you count the large and small versions of each area), six different match styles, eight different guns, a host of different items, open online play, and even a small character creation system. There's even several single-player missions for the lonely water fighter.
Water Warfare provides examples of:
- Affectionate Parody: Of the FPS genre.
- Banana Peel: An item which does pretty much what you'd think it would do--you slide in one direction and can't move for a while.
- BFG: The Water Bazooka. For when you need to hit everything.
- Boom! Headshot!: Some reviewers criticized (or at least negatively noted) the lack of these and other detected hits in this game... But when you think about it, how would that even work? You don't get wetter.
- Capture the Flag: Or treasure chest, in this case.
- City of Canals: The Plaza map seems to be set in one of these, though the canals are rather... shallow. (Shallow enough that you won't get wet crossing them.)
- Covered in Gunge: The "Sticky Juice" item, which slimes down your enemies and makes them move more slowly.
- Death Mountain: The Nature Park map seems to be partially this.
- Dual-Wielding: Picking up a second pistol or submachine gun when you already have one results in you carrying them both around. Anhialate!
- Green Hill Zone: The Playground has aspects of this, mixed with Toy Time.
- Lethal Joke Item: Do not mess with the Squeaky Hammer.
- Lighter and Softer: On the whole FPS genre!
- Nitro Boost: The Roller Skates.
- Non-Lethal KO: Quite possibly gone all the way to the other direction in terms of strangeness--being wet enough knocks you out, but how?
- Palmtree Panic: The Beach map.
- Random Effect Spell: The Surprise Device. Surprise! *pans fall from the sky*
- Randomly Generated Levels: Each map's features are randomly generated each time you play. Though some features are generally consistent (the Beach always has an island, Playground always has hills, Plaza has a central canal, and Nature Park has a big pool), the rest is placed randomly based on map size, game type, number of players, and the general whims of the Random Number God.
- Schmuck Bait: 90% of the time, the geysers in the Nature Park will have items parked directly on top of them. Just getting close to the geysers, though, is a risk of getting drenched.
- Splash Damage: Wop wop waaah.
- Stealth Based Mission: A few of them in Mission Mode--goals range from just getting to the end to retrieving a treasure chest.
- Toy Time: The Playground's various toys and doodads give it an appearance similar to one of these levels, if with some Green Hill Zone mixed in.
- Virtual Paper Doll: You can design your own character, to a limited extent.
- Walk It Off: Quite possibly one of the few inherently logical uses of this trope--damage is based on how wet you are, so it stands to reason you would dry off over time.
