Team Voltron 

In General

• Ace Pilot: Shiro was already this and Keith was on his way there at the start. Then the others grew into it as well.
• Badass Crew: They form Voltron. That is all.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: They all signed onto the Galaxy Garrison so they could explore the cosmos.
• Color-Coded Characters: Each Paladin gets their color according to their Lion. Subverted later, however.
• The Chosen Many: Definitely.
• Freudian Trio: Lance (id), Hunk (super-ego), and Pidge (ego).
• The Friends Who Never Hang: Frequently accused of being this.
  • It's more understandable regarding Shiro hanging out more with Pidge and Keith, since they genuinely need his help much more than Lance and Hunk do.
    • Shiro and Lance get some moments in the comics while Keith is off with the Blades but when Shiro is reminiscing about the team, his moment with Hunk is a group shot. It's around this time that it sinks in that Hunk and Shiro never really spoke.
  • Keith and Pidge rarely interact at all. Their biggest moment comes in Season 1 during the party on Arus and even then it's unclear if Keith disapproves of Pidge leaving Team Voltron simply out of disappointment or simply his abandonment issues.
  • Until Allura becomes the Blue Paladin, she and Hunk didn't talk much, not that they really talk much after that either. The two get more interaction in the comics.
• Fire-Forged Friends: They start out as Teeth-Clenched Teamwork but hit this by the Season 1 finale.
• Five-Man Band: Zigzagged all around, since Team Voltron has more members than in the original.
• Generation Xerox: With the original ones, as shown later in the series.
• Lady and Knight: Like in the original, they play it straight and then subvert it when Allura joins them in the battlefield.
• La Résistance: Technically, they become this towards the Galra Empire. And then they work with a more "traditional" resistance group, the Blade of Marmora.
• Manly Tears: Often and without any hint of remorse.
• Only One Name: Only Shiro and Pidge's surnames have been revealed.
• True Companions: At times they may not like one another, and it takes them a while to really mesh together, but they ultimately pull through.
• Space Cadet: Pidge, Hunk and Lance begin as this in the Galaxy Garrison. Keith used to be one, but left the Garrison before the series started. (More exactly, Keith was thrown out when Shiro and the other members of the Kerberos expedition disappeared and were pronounced dead by the higher-ups, and he openly and near violently questioned it)
• Vague Age: According to The Paladin Handbook, just before the end of Season 2; Shiro is 25, Keith is 18, Lance and Hunk are 17, and Pidge is 15. Then take into account Shiro's death and resurrection, Keith's time in the Quantum Abyss, and their skipping three years. It's doubtful that they even know how old they are by the end.
  

Princess Allura of Altea

Voiced by: Kimberly Brooks (original), Mariana Ortiz (Mexican Spanish dub)

Like in the original, Allura is the Princess of Planet Altea. Unlike the original, Altea was wiped away 10.000 years before the series begins, and she survived after her father King Alfor stashed her into a cryogenization pod before sending the Lions away and dying at the hands of the Galra Empire.

When the Blue Lion brings the soon-to-be Paladins and they awaken her and her few remaining companions (her Parental Substitute Coran and the Space Mice) from their slumber, she sees that they're The Chosen Many and officially makes them the Space Paladins, so they can fight back against the Galra Empire and protect the universe. Initially she's the Mission Control of sorts, piloting their base (the Castle of Lions), but later she becomes the Blue Paladin and fights with the others.

• Adaptational Badass: She's more straightforward and fight-happy than in the original series.
• Action Girl: As a result of the trope above, this Allura is a pretty good fighter on her own. She also develops her own magical powers and takes over Blue Lion.
• Aliens of London: Has a British accent in the original English dub, which seems to be a trait of Alteans as a whole.
• Ambiguously Brown: Unlike her original blonde and pale-skinned self, Allura has dark skin. Fans have referred to her as the space version of a Dark Elf.
• Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: What her Heroic Sacrifice to save the realities destroyed by Honerva entailed, more or less. It's not fully clear if she effectively died, only that she cannot fully return to Team Voltron. Word of God states, however, that there is the chance for her to eventually come back.
• Badass Princess: Oh YES.
• Barrier Maiden: It's explicitly said in the pilot movie that the Lions' existences were tied to her Life Energy by her Disappeared Dad.
• Big Good: Begins as this.
• Black and White Morality: At first, Allura's mindset was "Altea = Good; Galra = Bad." She grows out of it soon enough.
• Boobs of Steel: Has a rather curvy figure and a nicely-sized rack, and is a VERY strong fighter.
• Broken Ace - The Woman Wearing the Queenly Mask: When Season 8 start, Allura has become a well-loved Badass Princess... but in the opener, she reveals that living on Earth has forced to finally accept that her beloved family is dead and she'll never see them again, even as everyone else has loved ones waiting for them back home. Even more, as said below she heavily blames herself over Earth being caught in the intergalactic conflicts since the Paladins are all Earthians.
• Cool Big Sis: Towards Pidge, since they're Two Girls to a Team for quite a while.
• Daddy's Girl: She loved both of her parents a lot, but was especially close to her father Alfor.
• Death by Adaptation: Well maybe. The finale is not 100% clear on what happens to her, just that she can't return to Team Voltron at the moment. Word of God says that there is the chance for her to return sooner or later; in canon itself the Lions, who are bound to Allura herself via her Life Energy, take off at the very end in what's strongly implied to be their own search for her.
• Extraordinarily Empowered Girl: Only Haggar can rival this girl's capacity to use and manipulate Quintessence.
• Facial Markings: All Alteans have marks on their faces, and hers are pink. She can also give those to non-Alteans if she wishes to, and it's shown when she gives Lance small light-blue marks under his cheekbones before her Heroic Sacrifice Additionally, Allura later finds out that she has other marks which, like in Lotor's case, signals her as The Chosen One for Oriande, the world where Altean alchemy comes from.
• Fallen Princess: The last royal from a planet that was wiped millenia ago.
• Fantastic Racism: Towards the Galra, after her people were killed by them. Part of her Character Development is based on her realizing that despite the actions of The Empire, not every single Galra or half-Galra is evil.
• Fatal Flaw: She at first has quite the case of Black and White Morality, especially regarding the Galra. This causes quite the problems when dealing with the Blade of Marmora, which is formed by Galra citizens who rebel against The Empire. And when Keith is revealed to be half-Galra.
• Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She's very beautiful and feminine, loves small animals and adores sparkly stuff like jewelry. But she also has Super Strength, plus a quite more straightforward personality than in the original.
• Healing Hands: She can use her magic powers like this. Best seen when she helps out the Balmera, revives trees and flower fields.... And when she brings Lance back from the brink of death.
• Hot-Blooded: She's extremely emotional, and can be pretty impulsive. She went near berserk after learning what her then-boyfriend Lotor had used surviving Alteans as living batteries.
• It's All My Fault: Says this in the Season 8 opener, feeling she dragged Earth, an innocent underdeveloped planet, into the war against the Galra. Lance won't hear a word of it.
• Interspecies Friendship: With the Space Mice (including a Psychic Link) and the Paladins.
• Interspecies Romance: With either the human Lance or the half-Galra Lotor.
• Lady of War: A pretty powerful and elegant fighter.
• Master of Disguise: Alteans seem to have the ability of hiding some of their physical traits to blend in, and Allura is no exception.
• Meet Cute: When Allura stumbled out of her capsule, she ended up falling into Lance's arms. Hilariously subverted when she actually realizes what's going on and pins him to the floor.
• The Ojou: Downplayed: she's a princess, yes, but her planet was wiped away MANY years ago and now is trying to become a Politically-Active Princess. She's still very beautiful, more or less girly and fond of sparkly things like jewelry.
• Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Subverted: Allura's armor has pink tones while her possible love interest Lance's is blue... but by the time this happens she pilots the Blue Lion and he's in the Red one.
• Plucky Girl: A very strongwilled young lady.
• Politically-Active Princess: She does her best to do this in the complicated space-war environment that she and her companions are thrown into.
• Romance Arc - Ship Tease: Two, with the aforementioned Lance and Prince Lotor. She chooses Lance in the end, but later they become Star-Crossed Lovers.
• Relationship Upgrade: First with Lotor, then with Lance.
• Strong Family Resemblance: She's pretty much a younger version of her late mother, Queen Melenor. It's so strong, that when Zarkon's ghost first sees her, he actually assumes that she is Melenor.
• True-Blue Femininity: She tends to dress in blue clothes.
• Weapon of Choice: She gains one later, as she can use the Blue Lion's Bayard as a Whip Sword.
• White-Haired Pretty Girl: A beautiful young woman with snow-white hair, Innocent Blue Eyes and dark skin.

Takashi "Shiro" Shirogane

Voiced by: Josh Keaton (original), Ricardo Tejedo (Mexican Spanish dub)

The field leader of Team Voltron, and pilot of the Black Lion. Originally a talented and well-loved Galaxy Garrison pilot, he became a member of the Kerberos space exploring team, only to be captured with his companions by the Galra Empire. He spent a year there, fighting for his life in Gladiator Arenas, until he found the chance to escape to Earth. As the future Paladins retrieve him and they become the pilots of Voltron, he does his best to guide and help them out.

• The Ace: Considered the best of the Galaxy Garrison. Not hard to see why.
• Adaptational Sexuality: In the original GoLion, Takashi Shirogane's sexuality was never explored because he died too early to tell. In the Americanized Voltron, his counterpart Sven falls in love with Princess Romelle and therefore is straight or at least into women. This Shiro, however is Badass Gay or maybe Badass Bi.
• Affectionate Nickname: "Shiro" is a diminutive of his family name, "Shirogane". Only Adam seems to refer to him by his actual name, "Takashi".
• Artificial Limbs: His right hand.
• Ascended Extra: Gets a lot more screen time than Sven and the original Shirogane (both of them) ever got.
• Back From the Dead - Dead All Along: Zigzagged LIKE WHOA. He died in the Season 2 finale (but his corpse is never properly found), and the Shiro from Seasons 3 to 6 is a clone controlled by Haggar, Kuron (who doesn't know he's not Shiro)... with Shiro's actual soul stashed inside the Black Lion. In the S6 finale, Allura finds a way to call his spirit out of Black and into Kuron's now-comatose body, merging them into one and reviving him.
• Badass Gay: Established to be one in Season 7. On one hand he's an extremely badass Action Survivor who has gone through lots of shit, is one of the most powerful members of the team (if not THE strongest) and, despite his gigantic trauma over all the crap that he's suffered, does his best to keep going. On the other, he's either gay or at very least gay-leaning bisexual: he used to be in a romantic relationship with his male roommate Adam who was killed in action, also has what can be seen very easily as Ship Tease with his teammate and best friend Keith, and later he marries his also male subordinate Curtis on-screen.
• Badass Normal: While all the Paladins could be considered this, he was "The Champion" in all the time he spent in space before he became the Black Paladin.
• Broken Ace: He's an excellent fighter/Paladin and a mentor figure for his companions... but it's clear that his terrible experiences have left more than one mark on him.
• The Captain: Aside from being the Black Paladin, he's later the captain of the IGF Atlas.
• Expository Hairstyle Change: Subverted. At some point he disappears and, when he returns some time later, his usually short hair has grown past his shoulders so he needs to get it cut back to its original length... But as it turns out, the Shiro with the longer hair is not the real one, but his clone Kuron (who does have Shiro's memories and therefore sincerely believes that he is the real one)
• Freudian Excuse: Per Word of God, he's such a Team Dad because he lost the first crew under his command.
• Gayngst: Averted: Shiro does have angst, but it's not related to his sexuality. The closest would be his sadness for his lost First Love Adam, and that was more related to his death.
• Handicapped Badass: While in captivity, Shiro was subjected to torture and experiments that, among other things, chopped off one of his arms and replaced it with an Artificial Limb. Plus he was afflicted with a serious, if not lethal illness in these days. He's still The Leader and one of the most powerful members of the Voltron Team.
• Hundred-Percent Adoration Rating
• Ill Boy: It's said that he has a serious degenerative illness that will sap his strength and take him to an early grave. He's completely healed when he's Back From the Dead
• Informed Attribute: See Ill Boy above. Nothing in the series ever suggested that he was getting weaker.
• Lethal Chef: A promotional poster shows him as this: Hunk has a spectacular-looking cake, Lance and Allura are each holding a plate of nice-looking cookies... and poor Shiro's pouting over his plate of burnt, inedible treats. Fandom took this and ran with it, and the creators have yet to prove otherwise.
• Living Emotional Crutch: To Keith for quite a while, because he was the first and only person to care about him in years.
• Locked Into Strangeness: First the Skunk Stripe he got during his captivity, then his whole hair turning silver upon being resurrected.
• Made of Iron: Best seen in Season 7. Shiro is really tough to get rid of.
• Manchurian Agent: For Haggar in Season 3 through 6. Subverted in that the one playing the role was a clone of Shiro, the below mentioned Kuron.
• Married to the Job: A reason that things didn't work out between him and Adam, who (understandably) questioned him going into the long and dangerous Kerberos mission when he had next to no time to live. The Grand Finale even lampshades this by stating that he finally left the battle behind.
• Meaningful Name: Shiro the Hero. Also, "Shirogane" is an old-fashioned word for "silver" in Japanese, alluding to his white hair streak which later turns completely white.
• Mr. Fanservice: A tall Hunk with a finely "sculpted" Heroic Build, gorgeous Gray Eyes, a broad chest, a shapely ass, etc.
• Mysterious Past: Viewers know squat about where Shiro comes from, how he got into the Garrison, etc.
• Never Got to Say Goodbye - Parting Words Regret: With Adam.
• The Not Love Interest: With all their interactions, one would think he and Keith were love interests (especially since this Shiro is canonically into men). But it's clear that their relationship, while intensely supportive, isn't necessarily romantic... either that or Keith does harbor romantic/sexual feelings for Shiro, but never makes a move on him (probably due to the deal with Adam). Besides, Shiro later marries his implied Number Two at the Atlas, Curtis, and Keith is shown to be nothing but happy for them.
• Not So Above It All: Shiro tries, often very hard, but he's often shown to be just as goofy as Lance and Hunk, as shown when they're playing Altean D&D.
• The Obi-Wan: Gives off this vibe in Seasons 7 and 8. Unlike many examples, he lives on to the end.
• Only Known by Their Nickname: Everyone just refers to him as "Shiro." The only real exceptions are Iverson ("Lieutenant Shirogane") and Adam ("Takashi")
• Satellite Character: An interesting case. Shiro is a main character who's very important to the plot, but when it comes to flashbacks, he only really appears in those centered around Keith.
• Secret Secret Keeper: Figured out Pidge's secret from the start and kept it to himself. It certainly helps that he knew her and her family from quite a while ago to start with...
• Shell-Shocked Veteran: Frequently gives off this vibe.
• Spanner in the Works: Via escaping from the Galra exactly at the moment when they're about to launch an Alien Invasion on Earth. When the future Paladins find out that he's managed to return, they try to rescue him from the military so they can talk to him (Pidge, Lance and Hunk) or take him away (Keith), and that leads the group to the Blue Lion, then to Allura, then to Voltron itself.
• Spared by the Adaptation: His counterpart in GoLion died pretty quickly and his Backup Twin died at the very end. Shiro lives to the end of show, even if he was dead for three seasons and then came back.
• Star-Crossed Lovers: Him and Adam. According to the flashbacks they were both members of the Garrison, roommates and lovers, with apparently marriage-worthy feelings... but their relationship soured when Shiro was revealed to be lethally ill and, much to Adam's worry and displeasure, wanted to join the very dangerous Kerberos exploration mission while knowing he'd likely die before it was over. Some time after their break-up, Shiro went into the mission, was captured with his teammates, spent some time as a prisoner and, after joining Team Voltron, was away from Earth for years; later, it's revealed that Adam was killed in action alongside many other pilots during the Galra's actual invasion of Earth. When Shiro return and finds out, he's naturally very depressed and then visits Adam and his companion's memorial, quietly whispering against his lost love's 'plaque' how sorry he feels for him.
• Tall, Dark and Handsome: Even when his hair gets more salt on its pepper, Shiro is always tall and good-looking. He eventually becomes a White-Haired Pretty Boy.
• Team Dad: More than that. He's Space Dad.
• Twofer Token Minority: Asian (Keith may have some Asian blood, but it's never made explicit), gay, a PTSD sufferer, and suffering from an illness.
• Walking Spoiler: There's a lot of white in his entry isn't there?

Keith

Voiced by: Steven Yeung (original), Óscar Flores and Carlo Vásquez (Mexican Spanish dub)

The pilot of the Red Lion, and later of the Black one. He was one of the Galaxy Garrison's star recruits but also had severe attitude problems, until Shiro managed to reach out for him. After Shiro's disappearance he angrily confronted the higher-ups upon what he saw as them abandoning his beloved friend, and was kicked out as a result. He spent the following year tracking any signs that could lead him to Shiro, which actually led him to finding the Blue Lion herself. After he and the others properly rescue Shiro, they become the Voltron Paladins; this leads Keith to find out lots of things about his own self.

• Adaptation Species Change: He was human in the original (or half-human/half-Arusian depending on what one takes as canon) but here he's half-human/half Galra.
• Always Second Best: Feels this way with regards to Shiro, and greatly fears being "left behind" by him.
• Ambiguously Bi: See Ship Tease below.
• Beauty Is Never Tarnished: A sort-of Rare Male Example. Later in the series Keith has his left cheek scarred after his fight with Kuron/Shiro's clone, but said scar runs cleanly on his skin and arguably makes him even more handsome than he used to be.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: During his first days in the Garrison, Keith was a prickly and hard to get along with loner. Shiro was the first person in a long time to fully believe in him, however, and as a result he became fiercely devoted to him.
• Become Their Own Antithesis: Was very much against anyone, namely Pidge, putting their personal interests before Team Voltron and the good of the universe in Season 1. Guess what he does in Season 3 (though admittedly the exact circumstances were different).
• Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: A same-sex version, with Shiro.
• Bunny Ears Lawyer: Keith may have been as asshole early on, but he was and still is a truly skilled pilot. Still got him kicked out of the Garrison due to behavior issues.
• Character Development: Goes through a massive amount in the Quantum Abyss. Best shown when the Paladins reunite with the Garrison: Season 1 Keith would have flipped the bird at the Garrison people, but Season 7 Keith is respectful to Iverson and openly admits what a jerk he was in his youth.
• The Comically Serious: "Fun" doesn't seem to be something Keith grasps very easily.
• Commuting on a Bus: From Seasons 4 to 6, due to Steven Yeun's work commitments.
• Determinator: Keith has his flaws. But he never gives up. Deconstructed in Season 3 as this can also lead him to be laser-focused on one issue, namely Lotor, that he ignores his teammates.
• Embarrassing Nickname: He doesn't like it when Lance calls him "Mullet."
• Failed a Spot Check: How many hints did this guy miss about who Krolia was?
• The Friend Nobody Likes: In Seasons 1 and 2, Shiro is his Only Friend. A good part of his development is realizing that he isn't alone any longer, and that he can reach out for other people who are willing to help and care for him. His vlog has him admitting he invokes the trope, as he pushes people away rather than risk their rejection.
• Friendless Background: Due to his inability to connect with other people. Flashbacks show him as constantly sitting apart from other kids, and at the Garrison his temper and surly attitude didn't earn him many points with his classmates. His vlog reveals that this was more or less intentional: "Maybe...instead of accepting people, I push them away before they have a chance to reject me. Guess I have some walls up."
• Half-Identifying Hybrid: Half-human/half-Galra. First on account of his ignorance of his heritage, then on account of them being... the Galra. He later embraces both sides of his heritage.
• Jerkass Has a Point: In the Season 1 finale. It's a monumentally stupid idea to take Voltron into the heart of Galra High Command, even if Allura has been captured. In fact, Allura agrees with him!
• Never Be Hurt Again: Per Word of God. Again, as time passes he begins to open up to others.
• Not So Above It All: He's quite aloof, but can sometimes be as adorkable as the others.
• Parental Abandonment: His firefighter father died in the line of duty when Keith was a child and his mother was a Galra Action Girl who had to leave him few after his birth, and couldn't meet up with him until many years later.
• Out of Focus: In seasons 4 and 5 due to Steven Yeun's poor availability. A bit in season 1 as well.
• Pretty Boy: A slender young man with long dark hair, pale skin, and large, expressive eyes.
• Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: A pale-skinned and dark-haired young man, with quite the Pretty Boy looks.
• Ship Tease: With Shiro and Acxa. Arguably, also with Hunk and Lance.
• Strong Family Resemblance: To both of his parents. On one hand he inherited his dad's hair/skin/eyes color. On the other, near everything else comes from his mother including the Galra heritage.
• Too Much Alike: A factor in his antagonism with Lance. They're both Hot-Blooded, fiercely independent, and regard themselves as The Lancer to Shiro's The Hero. They eventually grow out of it.
• Troubled but Cute: After losing his parents, he had no real friends growing up and his school teachers wrote him off as a troublemaker not worth giving a chance, and he knows his problems at school/the Garrison were his own responsibility because he cultivated that persona to avoid being hurt again. Then when he finally did make a friend in Shiro, he was declared dead after a disastrous space mission. His past, plus the events of the series, led to him breaking from stress and having to leave the team for a while to find himself. He gets better when he finds his Missing Mom and has the chance to properly bond with her and work through his issues.
• Undying Loyalty: Towards Shiro, sometimes going straight up into Always Save the Guy.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Lance.
• What the Hell, Hero?: Twice.
  • In Season 1, everyone calls him out on being willing to abandon Allura, and his justification that Zarkon wants them to follow. As it turns out, Zarkon did want them to follow.
  • In Season 3, the whole team, though mainly Allura and Shiro, call him out for focusing his time more on the Blades than on Voltron. Eventually, he realizes that they're right and steps down from Voltron.
• You Are Not Alone: The crux of his arc throughout the story as he learns to open his heart and trust others.

Lance

Voiced by: Jeremy Shada (original), Luis Fernando Orozco (Mexican Spanish dub)

The pilot of the Blue Lion, and later of the Red one. Lance is among those who kicks off the whole action, as after a failed mission he and his friends Hunk and Pidge find out about his idol Shiro being locked away by the military and urges the other two to go rescue him. As a plus he pretty much falls for Princess Allura after meeting her, and while he's quite the Comic Relief of the group, he later begins to unlock his own potential and properly grow up.

• Abhorrent Admirer: Downplayed, Allura does care for Lance and turns him down because of how persistent he is, NOT out of actual hate. She's quite surprised when the Space Mice tell her that his feelings have become more serious than she believed.
• Always Second Best: Struggles with this. He started out as second best to Keith in the Garrison, then he worried Shiro's return meant he'd have to give up the Red Lion, and then he freaks out when he realizes he lacks a signature weapon/fighting style.
• Betty and Veronica: The Betty to Lotor's Veronica: he's one of the heroes, can be seen as a Butt Monkey-like version of a Boy Next Door, etc. (Ironically, his older sister is named Veronica)
• Bodyguard Crush: While he isn't Allura's personal bodyguard, he is one of the Paladins and he crushes on her so he more or less qualifies. (Plus his original self from GoLion / Lion Voltron also had Bodyguard Crush-like feelings for her)
• Book Ends: He and Blue start and end the story.
• Butt Monkey: In the beginning, due to his ego and rash behavior. He grows out of it as the series progresses.
• Call to Agriculture: He comes from a Cuban family implied to have ties to farming / gardening businesses, and follows a mix of this and preaching of Allura's message of love and forgiveness at the end of the series.
• Casanova Wannabe: Oh so very much. Hilariously, he's actually not that bad at endearing himself to women, his problem is that he's so vain and superfluous at the start that he assumes everyone just wants to go make out.
• Character Development: At first he constantly wants to have large parades thrown for Team Voltron and the attention of alien women. By the end? He's taken on the humblest of all the Paladins' fates.
• Comic Relief: His general lack of tact results in this.
• Crazy Jealous Guy: With regards to the Blue Lion. Downplayed in regards to Allura, he IS jealous of Lotor when he and Allura get close but does his best to NOT let it interfere with his actions. (At most, he complains to the Space Mice about it)
• Decoy Protagonist: He's set up as The Protagonist in the first third of the Pilot Movie, but it soon shifts to an ensemble cast.
• Dogged Nice Guy: He begins as this to Princess Allura. A part of his Character Development involves him stopping to act that way when she gets another Love Interest, Prince Lotor (who's more of an Anti-Hero than an Overlord, Jr. in this continuity), and learning to actually helping and supporting her without expecting her to love him. It's only after Lotor turns out to have crossed the Moral Event Horizon and that he helps her to deal with such heartbreak and other problems that she begins to actually see him as a prospect lover.
• Failed a Spot Check: He has a bad habit of doing this. Special credit has to be being the only one who didn't pick up on the fact that Pidge was a girl.
• Falling Into His Arms: He and Allura provide the page's top picture.
• Fatal Flaw: A lot of his obnoxious behavior comes from his insecurities.
• First Guy Wins: He's the first person that Allura sees once she wakes up, and this gives him a good chance to be her Love Interest. And that's what happens, even when they go the Star-Crossed Lovers way.
• The Fool: A rare non-protagonist example. At the beginning of the Pilot Episode, Lance is a terrible pilot and not exactly the best Garrison candidate. But the fact that the once-star recruit Keith was thrown out let him get into the Garrison itself, then his impulsive desire to "play hooky" and 'recruit' his friends Hunk and Pidge for it leads them to realize that Lance's missing hero Shiro has returned to Earth, and after they (plus Keith) have broken Shiro out, it turns out that the Blue Lion mecha that Keith's been tracking is only compatible with Lance himself and thus he's the one who can handle it...
• The Gunslinger: A pretty talented shooter, and his Bayard takes the shape of a rifle or a sniper.
• Hero Worshipper: To Shiro. He even admits it out loud when the group finds out that he's back, and gets incensed when he sees Keith's on his way because HE wants to rescue Shiro before Keith does.
• Heterosexual Life Partners: With Hunk. Also qualifies as an Odd Friendship.
• Hidden Depths:
  • He REALLY misses Earth and his family when at space. In fact, during the team-bonding exercises from the beginning, at some point the Paladins are supposed to think of what's most important to them... and Lance immediately thinks of his parents and siblings, rather than any parades or glory.
  • He's also very in-tune with nature, pining for the lost beauty of Earth's farmlands, and loves swimming.
  • He's also incredibly insecure, feeling he lacks anything special compared to the rest of the team.
• I Just Want to Be Special
• Idiot Hero: Especially at the beginning, though he grows out of it with time.
• Informed Attribute: Despite Idiot Hero, he never actually seems to be an idiot. He's immature and rash, sure, but he's also pretty good at Indy Ploys, can read people quite well, and got a pretty quick handle on how to operate Blue.
• Instant Expert: He doesn't unlock Blue's full power right away, but he's far better at using her than the others are at using their Lions.
• Jack of All Stats: How he grows out of being Always Second Best. In fighting he's not as fast as Keith or Shiro, not as strong as Hunk, and not as nimble as Pidge, but that doesn't mean should be dismissed since it also means he's pretty well-rounded.
• The Kirk: To Pidge's Spock and Hunk's McCoy.
• Ladykiller in Love: As Lance actually starts falling for Allura, he lays off the flirting. Heck, Allura had to be told that he had come to truly like her.
• Large Ham: Not to Coran's extent but he can really ham it up if he wants to. Unsurprisingly, they're quite good friends.
• Love at First Sight: For Allura.
• Intergenerational Friendship AND Interspecies Friendship: Lance is a human youth in his mid-late teens while Coran is the Altean equivalent of a man in his early-mid 40's. They still get along quite well.
• Meaningful Name: He's The Lancer.
• Nice, Mean and In-Between: The Mean to Hunk's Nice and Pidge's In-Between.
• Obfuscating Stupidity: Oh he's certainly Book Dumb, but not anywhere as near as dumb as he gives off. i.e, he's shown himself to be pretty decent at Indy Ploy-ing.
• Promoted to Love Interest: This Lance actually has a chance to become Princess Allura's boyfriend, especially after he becomes more mature and stops either hitting on other girls or making passes at her.
• Ship Tease: With Allura, increasing as time passes. Later ascends to Official Couple status and then to Star-Crossed Lovers.
• Shipping Torpedo: Keith/Veronica is hard core No Yay in his book.
• Sibling Yin-Yang: Few would've even suspected that Veronica had ever spoken to Lance until they revealed themselves to be siblings.
• Spanner in the Works: If it wasn't for him encouraging Hunk and Pidge to play hooky, Shiro would never have been rescued, and the Galra would have found the Blue Lion. Let that sink in, Lance wasn't the only factor behind saving the universe, but was a key part on it.
• Too Much Alike:
  • Again, a factor in his antagonism with Keith. They're both Hot-Blooded, fiercely independent, and regard themselves as The Lancer to Shiro's The Hero. They eventually grow out of it.
  • With Shiro to an extent. Despite Shiro's Odd Friendship with Keith, he sometimes acts like an older Lance, suggesting that this is why Shiro is sometimes harder on Lance than others; he wants Lance to avoid his mistakes.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Keith.

Katie Holt aka Pidge Gunderson

Voiced by: Bex Taylor-Klaus (original), Angélica Villa (Mexican Spanish dub)

The pilot of the Green Lion. Katie Holt was a prickly but very intelligent normal teen girl... but on a fateful day, her father Sam and her brother Matthew, who were Shiro's companions in the Kerberos mission, disappeared with him. She angrily tried to get replies regarding their fate from the Galaxy Garrison, and when that didn't work she decided to infiltrate the Garrison via disguising herself as a young man named Pidge Gunderson. She spends around a year like this, and then becomes a member of the Voltron Team - while still being determined to find out what actually happened to her lost loved ones.

• Adaptation Species Change: A sort of recursive example. Pidge was a Human Alien in Voltron but is human here, just like in GoLion.
• Belligerent Sexual Tension: Her father thinks that she has this with Hunk.
• Bifauxnen: Initially a cute-looking Girly Girl, she can make a pretty cute boy as well -- and uses it to her advantage.
• Big Brother Worship: She adores her brother, and in fact she modeled her "Pidge" persona after him. And later, she falls into despair when he's believed to have actually died..
• Birds of a Feather: With Hunk, who shares her love of science and technology.
• Boyish Short Hair: After her gender's revealed, she keeps her hair short for practical reasons.
• Brainy Brunette - Cute Bookworm: But of course.
• Character Development:
  • Before the Olkari arc, she hated anything organic and being in nature, preferring the predictable and sterile world of computers. By the arc's end, she's developed a strong appreciation for the intricacies of nature's designs and has come to appreciate that knowledge can come from anywhere.
  • At the beginning of season 1, she made it clear she was only in it to find her family, even leaving the team behind at one point so she could go look for them by herself. It takes Sendak attacking the castle and her friends to make her realize she's been selfish, and she immediately hurries back to help them. She later acknowledges that the team is her family... just like her father always said his own crew members were his. This development is showcased in season 2, when she gets a lead on where Matt is but chooses to stay with the team and look for him once they've taken out Zarkon.
• Despair Event Horizon: Pidge is usually resourceful and logical, but she completely splinters when Matthew, the brother that she adores and spent a lot of time searching for, is believed to have actually died. Only realizing some small details that hinted at him being Faking the Dead instead got her out of this state.
• Fauxshadow: Allura speaks of some great secret that Pidge is hiding early in Season 1. The Reveal... she's a girl.
• Foreshadowing: There's a REASON why the faces of Shiro's companions in Kerberos weren't clearly shown at the beginning: they're her missing father and brother, and she STRONGLY resembles both of them. This isn't under spoilers because the reveal of her identity and her bond to them is made VERY early.
• Girliness Upgrade: At the very end, Pidge keeps her hair short but now has it in a quite girlier cut that resembles Ami Mizuno's.
• Important Haircut: Her first step to become Pidge? Cutting off her until-then quite long hair.
• Informed Attribute: On Olkarion, she claims to be a Sickly Neurotic Geek with many allergies and frail skin. However, there's no evidence of this anytime she's outside (maybe adrenaline kept her healthy?) and it seems to have been just an excuse to try and weasel out of Olkarion's forests to try and visit the technologically advanced city.
• Lady Looks Like a Dude: Aside from her wide eyes, facial features, and Rapunzel Hair, she never had an overtly feminine appearance unless she wore a dress. She exploited the hell out of this when posing as a boy at the Garrison.
• Late Arrival Spoiler: She's a girl.
• Nice, Mean and In-Between: The In-Between to Hunk's Nice and Lance's Mean.
• One of the Boys: Downplayed. The show never makes a big deal of her being "not like the other girls," but it never makes a big deal of her biological gender either. She's simply a girl who likes comfortable, tomboyish clothes and enjoys the same activities as the guys.
• Only Known by Their Nickname: Only her family tends to call her Katie.
• Plucky Girl: Again, but of course.
• Robot Buddy: Has two. The first was Rover, a Galra sentry she reprogrammed, and the second is Beezer, though he's technically this for Rolo and Nyma.

• Shipper on Deck: In season 8 she, Nadia, Ina and Romelle support Allura and Lance. She also teases Hunk about his possible feelings for Shay in the first season.

• The Smurfette Principle: Of the first five Paladins. Overlaps with Two Girls to a Team when counting Allura.
• The Spock: To Lance's Kirk and Hunk's McCoy.
• Stock Shoujo Bullying Tactics: She was at the receiving end of school bullying before being a Paladin, with her classmates calling her a nerd and laughing at her when she was excited about something scientific.
• Strong Family Resemblance: To both her parents and her brother. Especially the latter. It's amusingly lampshaded by Hunk at the start, as he sees a picture of a teen Matt in his Garrison days with a pre-teen and pre-SPO Pidge next to him... and he mistakes Matt for Pidge.
• Sweet Polly Oliver: Pulls this to infiltrate the Garrison and search for her missing father and brother. Her disguise is good enough to be undetected for around a year, until she's found out by the Paladins (save for Lance) in one way or another.
• Swiss Army Weapon: All the bayards are this, but she shapes hers into a far greater variety of forms.
• Teen Genius: She's 15 and already a computer and mechanic whiz.
• Trash of the Titans: Her room at the Castle of Lions is so messy, it provides the page image.
• Wrench Wench: Though her speciality seems to be software, she's quite handy with hardware.

Hunk

Voiced by: Tyler Labine (original), Abraham Vega (Mexican Spanish dub)

The pilot of the Yellow Lion. A gentle, pudgy and a bit cowardly young man, he initially seemed to be ill-suited for the Galaxy Garrison itself and maybe for his Voltron spot, but pulled through and started to develop his own inner and outer strength through their adventures.

• Adaptational Wimp: This Hunk is a good deal more reserved than his other selves.
• All-Loving Hero: Pretty much the gentlest and most compassionate of the Paladins.
• Belligerent Sexual Tension: Sam Holt thinks that he has this with Pidge.
• Big Beautiful Man: Very much so.
• Big Eater: Oh yes. He also channels it via being a truly skilled cook and genuinely caring about what food means to people. In fact, sometimes he seems more interested in feeding people than himself!
• Birds of a Feather: With Pidge, as both are passionate science and technology nerds.
• Butt Monkey: Along with Lance.
• Character Development: He was pure Comic Relief at first. By the end of the Balmera arc, he truly understands how important Voltron is and all the good he can do.
• Chronic Hero Syndrome: Eventually develops one. If someone cries for help, Hunk shan't be long.
• Cowardly Lion: Hunk may be easy to scare, but he will never abandon anyone who needs him.
• Disability Superpower: Hunk gets scared a lot. Comes in handy when the Paladins are succumbing to Space Madness in Season 7 given that he has so much experience in being scared.
• The Engineer: Thanks to his mechanics knowledge.
• Extreme Omnivore: Not only a Big Eater.
• Gentle Giant: A very emotional and kindhearted big boy.
• Genius Bruiser: He's also smarter than one would think, being a great chef and a pretty good mechanic.
• Heterosexual Life Partners: With Lance. Also qualifies as an Odd Friendship.
• The Heart: For all of his goofy behavior, Hunk can show quite a bit of emotional strength when needed. Heck, he may be the most emotionally stable of the whole group!
  • In Season 7, Keith outright says that he admires Hunk due to this.
• Meaningful Name: He's a hunk isn't he?
• The McCoy: To Lance's Kirk and Pidge's Spock.
• Nice, Mean and In-Between: The Nice to Lance's Mean and Pidge's In-Between.
• Nice Guy: To almost unreal levels. Hunk never shows hatred for anyone and more often than not, goes out of his way to help people in the most minor way possible.
• Out of Focus: Until Season 7, he had no subplots.
• Running Gag: Him puking off-screen.
• Ship Tease: With Shay, Pidge, and maybe Keith.
• She Is Not My Girlfriend: When asked about Shay.
• Stout Strength: He's big, he's a bit slow, but he's also VERY strong.
• Supreme Chef: He's so good that he began commanding Vrepit Sal, the guy who once enslaved him as a dish washer. The Where Are They Now? Epilogue reveals he established a culinary empire, and both Shay AND Vrepit Sal are helping him out with it.
• Undying Loyalty: The only one who didn't audition for the Black Lion. He and Yellow are inseparable.

Team Voltron's Closest Allies

Coran

Once King Alfor's closest advisor in the Altean court, his boss and leader also froze him in stasis before Altea was wiped out. After he, Princess Allura and the Space Mice are awakened and then Voltron is formed, he joins Team Voltron's cause.

• Aliens of London: All Alteans have this but he stands out for speaking in a New Zealand accent.
• Arbitrary Skepticism: In Crystal Venom. As he describes the situation, he questions why he's victim to this trope.
• Birds of a Feather: Across the Universe reveals he was rather like Lance in his youth. Neatly explains why they get along so well. They're also both extremely homesick for most of the series and love duelling each other in Ham-to-Ham Combat.
• Bunny Ears Lawyer: For all his silliness, Coran is a very capable engineer and starship pilot as well being well-versed in dealing with black market dealing Unilu.
• Butt Monkey: If funny stuff doesn't "target" Lance or Hunk, he's a good candidate to be hit...

• Emo Teen: As shown in Across the Universe, he was one in his youth.

Romelle

Voiced by: Mimi Dávila and Lacey Chabert (original), Xóchitl Ugarte (Mexican Spanish dub)

A young lady who, with her younger brother Bandor, is a descendant of a group of Alteans who escaped the destruction of their planet because they were on trading businesses in these days, went into hiding thanks to their Master of Disguise abilities,  and eventually found sanctuary in Lotor's "hidden colony" destined to preserve Altean culture. Around season 6, the siblings are hit by a terrible tragedy and it's up to Romelle to search for someone able to strike back at the culprit, which leads her to find Keith and then the Voltron Team...

• Action Survivor: Not a trained fighter, but can handle herself quite well in a pinch.
• Aliens of London: Speaking with a British accent seems to be an Altean trait of sorts. Fittingly, hers seems a tad more Welsh than Allura's London accent which fits with their differing ethnicities.
• Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Lance let her pilot the Red Lion. This proved a poor choice on his part.
• Broken Bird: She lost her parents, her brother and lots of her people, all because of Lotor's ambitions. No wonder she has some issues to work on.
• Cloudcuckoolander: Can be a bit ditzy from time to time.
• Depending on the Artist: How big are her breasts?
• Facial Markings: Hers are aqua.
• Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A kindhearted blonde girl.
• Genre Savvy: She did NOT tell her fellow Alteans about Lotor harvesting Quintessence from the citizens who were taken into the "second colony", knowing that they wouldn't believe her. Instead, she sought help from outsiders as soon as she could.
• Girlish Pigtails: As seen above.
• Purple Eyes: Of the "this person will be VERY important" kind.
• Shipper on Deck: Quite the Lance/Allura fangirl.
• Spanner in the Works: In true Voltron fashion, this girl's mere presence completely ruins Lotor's plans. In this particular case, she managed to reach for Keith and then for Team Voltron, revealing to them what Lotor had done to not just her brother Bandor (and apparently, their parents before them), but to many of her fellow Alteans...
• Tragic Keepsake: Bandor's communicator. It becomes vital later on.
• Unrelated in the Adaptation: Unlike previous outings, she and Bandor are NOT related to Allura. They're not even the same ethnicity, and as seen above it turns out to be a big plot point.
• Walking Spoiler: The girl's whole existence spoils two big plot points. One, that not every Altean not named Allura or Coran was killed off. Second, that they may get killed off anyway if Lotor gets away with his plans of using them to harvest Quintessence.
• We Used to Be Friends: Implied in regards to an Altean girl named Luka.

Spoiler Character

The "product" of a secret project carried by Haggar, who arrives to the plot in Season 3. His name is Kuron and he is a clone of Shiro made by Haggar and her associates, then sent out after Shiro dies in Season 2. This young man has been mindwiped and brainwashed into believing himself to be the real Shiro, and once he's located by Keith he's taken in by the Voltron Team and believed to be Shiro as well, the only apparent difference being how he cannot pilot the Black Lion for a while. But around Season 6, Haggar speeds up her "master plan" and starts using him directly against his companions, especially Keith...

• Artificial Limbs: Like Shiro, he has a mechanical arm. Which is severed by Keith as they fight, and since Haggar controlled Kuron from it, it also breaks off her grip on him.
• Brainwashed and Crazy: A pretty mean way to use this trope.
• Cloning Blues: Uhm. Oh boy. Goes quite into "Expendable Clone" deals later: Haggar completely ditches him when her plans fail, and later the real Shiro's conscience is placed inside his body and Kuron's mind seems to disappear. Word of God explains that Kuron and Shiro basically merged together, however, no this doesn't fully fit in.
• Manchurian Agent: As already mentioned, Kuron truly believes that he is Shiro. This belief doesn't "crack" up until Season 5 (when he acts more brashly than usual) and Season 6 (when Haggar fully takes over)
• Took a Level In Jerkass: He starts as a mild-mannered young man, but in Season 5 he's more short tempered than usual.
• Walking Spoiler: If anything, this wiki section has MORE spoiler tags than that of his original.. He can't even be given his proper picture on the page, which had to be linked above instead!

Team Voltron's Animal Companions

The Space Mice

Allura's pets and closest friends, who snuck into her cryogenic pod right before the Altean destruction and as such survived it with her and Coran. The yellow one is Platt, the pink one (and only girl) is Chuchule, the smallest and shyest one is Chulatt, and the leaner and more skittish one is Plachu.

• The Confidant: Surprisingly, Allura and later Lance confide on them once in a while. Not that surprising when one consider that they're highly intelligent AND unlikely to spill the secrets they're told about. (Unless they do it towards Allura)
• Genki Girl: Chuchule seems to be this.
• Gossipy Hens: They're the ones who tell Allura about Pidge being a girl and Lance's romantic woes.
• Intellectual Animal: They're actually quite clever and crafty!
• Interspecies Friendship: With Alteans and humans.
• Nice Mice: So much, they are the ones providing the main picture on the page itself.
• Pink Is Girly: Chuchule is the girl of the group and she's pink.
• Psychic Link: With Allura, as her fellow Altea survivors who were in her capsule for 10.000 years.
• Ridiculously Cute Critter: Who are the cutest mice in the universe? Who are they? Who are they?

Kosmo

A space wolf that Keith adopts in Season 6.

• Canine Companion: Space show version.
• Evil-Detecting Dog: His growling at Madicus in season 7 is a sign that the man's not all he seems to be. Sure enough, he's led the team into a trap where he intends to kill Keith and Krolia.
• Hates Being Alone: It's best to not even try leaving this "doggo" on his own. Allura found out about this the hard way.
• Heroes Love Dogs: For a given value of "dog", but Keith does love him to death.
• Heroic Dog: But of course.
• Mysterious Past: The show never quite bothered to explain where Kosmo came from.
• Precious Puppy: How he first appears. By the last season, he's grown so big that Keith could perfectly ride him if he ever wished to.
• Teleporters and Transporters: He has this ability, which may be inherent to his breed/race. It can be pretty useful, of course.

Kaltenecker

A cow that was stolen from Earth and then given to the Voltron Team in the space mall in Season 2.

• Aliens Steal Cattle: How she ended up on the space mall.
• Call a Rabbit a Smeerp: The alien selling her offered Lance and Pidge "a free Kaltenecker" which is likely what he named the species and not this one individual.
• Everything's Better with Cows: And funnier, and later... "milkier", so to say.
• Out of Focus: She first appears in Season 2... and from then on, she's borderline gone save for some scenes in Season 4 and 7. To be fair, unlike the Mice and Kosmo she IS a 100% normal cow from Earth, so aside of being funny and giving milk... what else can she do?
