The Group In General[]
- Badass Crew: As expected of a Tales party.
- Character Development: Every party member gets some, save for Rowen, who doesn't really need any.
- Milla goes from a cold, pragmatic spirit heavily reliant on the Four Great Spirits to a strong, kind woman who views humans as equals and learns to rely on her own strength. Her opinion on spyrix also changes over the game; initially, she sees it as dangerous technology that she must take away from humanity at all costs but after the group's arrival in Elympios, she comes to realise that it can be used for good.
- Jude goes from an unsure young man who doesn't know what to do with himself to a confident doctor determined to help the people of Elympios.
- Alvin goes from a devious mercenary who knows only how to betray others to a Knight in Sour Armor who decides to finally make something of himself.
- Elize goes from a shy, awkward young girl who relies on Teepo to express herself to a far more happy and confident girl who relies more on her own voice.
- Combination Attack: Each pair of party members has their own set of Link Artes. Alvin, Elize, Leia and Rowen all have 3 artes between them, each of them have 6 with Milla and Jude and Milla and Jude themselves have a grand total of 12.
- Fire-Forged Friends: Though some take longer to trust each other than others.
- Five-Man Band:
- The Leader: Milla
- The Lancer: Jude
- The Big Guy: Alvin
- The Smart Guy: Rowen
- The Chick: Elize
- The Sixth Ranger: Leia
- Freudian Trio: Milla, Jude and Alvin form this early on, though it largely fades as others join the group.
- Hidden Depths: None of the party members are quite what they seem at first glance:
- Milla may be a spiritual being with No Social Skills, but she's actually a lot more human than she lets on or would like to admit - to give an example, she can be surprisingly vain and somewhat envious, which she only manages to veil thinly.
- Jude comes off as an Idiot Hero at first, but he's really just naive when it comes to the ways of the world and is in fact very booksmart. He's also a brilliant strategist, enough that that both Milla and Alvin consider him a genius.
- Alvin comes off as very friendly and laid-back in the beginning, but it soon becomes clear that he's very devious and not to be trusted. Milla even suggests that he invokes this trope i.e. he shapes what's outside to conceal the ugliness within. He's also a pretty big [[Stepford Smiler]], with all the jobs as a mercenary being to pay for his mother's treatment and return to his home. On a lighter note, he's also surprisingly fashion-conscious, and loves his scarf and coat.
- Elize is introduced as a very shy girl who relies on Teepo to do most of the talking for her. Once Teepo is revealed to be a machine that verbalises Elize's thoughts, however, it gives a whole new dimension to her character and it is shown she has a side to her that is like most girls her age.
- For a Genki Girl, Leia has a lot of understanding of people as well as emotional maturity. In fact, she's the one to pull Jude from his Heroic BSOD. Even before the above event, she had knowledge of spyrixes before Milla brought them up and revealed she had a huge amount of issues in her childhood steaming from her Ill Girl status.
- Who would have thought that an old butler like Rowen would turn out to be none other than Ilbert the Conductor, a Famed in Story tactician who used to work for the Rashugal military?
- True Companions: It takes a very long time, but the group all grow to care for each other in the end. Yes, even Alvin.
Milla Maxwell[]
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese) and Minae Noji (English) |
[]
"What's necessary to make a decision is not time or circumstance. It is your will." |
A mysterious young woman who claims to be Maxwell, the king of the spirits. She is dedicated to her mission of protecting the world, and approaches her responsibilities with a headstrong and mature manner. She lacks first-hand knowledge of human society and is fascinated to learn about how humans live, even if she is prone to misinterpretation.
Her special ability is Magi, which allows her to instantaneously change her elemental spells into elemental combat artes. Her Support Skill Bind lets her freeze an enemy in place for her Link ally to attack.
Tropes associated with Milla:
- Action Girl: Quite awesomely so, and well handled as well. Her Action Girl status is challenged in the beginning when she is Brought Down to Normal, until she is re-taught how to fight and begins to formally learn all the skills that she previously relied on the spirits for. The result is one of the most genuinely badass characters in Tales history.
- Adorkable: Her innocent lack of understanding towards normal human social graces, and her enthusiastic joy at experiencing feelings we take for granted (such as hunger) is very endearing. She's particularly excited to experience a runny nose for the first time.
- Alliterative Name
- All-Loving Heroine: No, seriously. She doesn't seem like this at all at first but about halfway through the game, she spells it out in black-and-white for Jude:
Jude: You really do care about all spirits, don't you? Not just the Great Four, but the lesser spirits too. |
- Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence
- Artificial Life Form: She was created by the real Maxwell as a decoy and to defend Liese Maxia from Elenpois' Jin machines.
- Back From the Dead
- Badass Adorable: She's a beautiful, Adorkable young woman, and the most badass character in the game.
- Bag of Spilling: All of her skills, including her ability to swim and even swing her sword correctly, are borrowed from the other Great Spirits, leaving her more than a little nonplussed when she loses access to them. This renders Milla briefly unable to so much as string basic combos together between her loss of the Spirits and Alvin's re-teaching her how to fight. So much even Jude notices early on the complete lack of skill in the way she swings her sword.
- Boobs of Steel: Full-Contact Magic version, yes, but she still counts.
- Brought Down to Badass: In the beginning of the game, she uses her spirits to do just about everything, and is far stronger than any enemy she encounters at that time. When she loses her connection to the spirits, her abilities significantly drop, but she's able to regain her footing quite easily with a little practice, still proving to be a competent warrior without them.
- But I Read a Book About It: Just about everything she knows about humans is from books.
- Cain and Abel: The Abel to Muzet's Cain.
- Catchphrase: "I read it in a book."
- Cool Sword: Case in point.
- Crutch Character: At the beginning of the game, until her Brought Down to Badass moment. Though Milla remains at Lv.1, her connection to the Greater Spirits gives her massive boosts to all of her stats and some of the most powerful attacks in the game.
- Declaration of Protection: Towards Jude because she feels responsible for involving him in her mission.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: Part of her Character Development - she at first equates humans to irresponsible children and can be rather ruthless in her attempts to complete her mission, though as time goes on she begins to see the beauty in the world and respect humans as equals, rather than as nuisances she must babysit.
- Determinator: Possibly a deconstruction. There are times when Milla's dedication to finishing her mission can actually be a hindrance, such as when she attempts to get to Fennmont despite not even being able to walk. Ultimately, Jude decides to help heal her legs, as he knows that if he didn't, she'd waddle off somewhere and get into trouble. After she's able to walk again, she starts pushing herself very hard, to the point that Alvin is convinced she doesn't know the meaning of 'taking it easy'.
- It should be noted that, while she never loses this trait, by the final act she seems to have finally learned to slow down once in a while- before the group enters the Final Dungeon, it is her who suggests that the group go back to Rieze Maxia and finish whatever business they may have there beforehand. It helps that Gaius gave them all the time they needed to prepare.
- Deuteragonist: If you choose Jude's route.
- Elemental Powers
- All Your Powers Combined: Her Mystic Arte is basically this trope taken Up to Eleven and combined with some Instant Runes and a magical variation of Macross Missile Massacre.
- Blow You Away
- Casting a Shadow: Her most seldom used element and, along with Light, is not used in her Mystic Arte.
- Dishing Out Dirt
- Light'Em Up
- Making a Splash
- Pure Energy: Her Mystic Arte ends with this derived from All Your Elements Combined.
- Playing with Fire
- Shock and Awe: By combining Fire and Wind.
- Full-Contact Magic: How her "Magi" Personal Skill works.
- God in Human Form
- Heroic Sacrifice: Dies after starting the Kresnik Spear on Jirand's ship in order to drain tha mana that was crushing everyone.
- The Hero: No matter who you choose, Milla is the one with the mission and much of the story is centered around her.
- Honor Before Reason: Despite her stated devotion to her mission, her tendency to bluntly speak her mind when subtlety or compromise would help her more often gets the party in trouble.
- Humans Are Special: Milla zigzags all over the place between this trope, Humans Are Flawed and Humans Are the Real Monsters. On one hand, she believes many humans like Alvin and Gaius are flawed beings. On another hand, she believes a larger amount of people like Gilland, Nachtigal, and Agria, are horrible people. She then believes on a much smaller scale that some humans are special like Jude, Rowen, Leia, etc. She never truly changes her perspective on humans even by the end, but she does slightly settle on Humans Are Special.
- Idiot Hair: Ahem, it's a Charm Point!!!
- Instant Expert: As long as she's connected to the other Greater Spirits, she can do pretty much anything they can.
- Even after being separated from the Greater Spirits, she still has an incredibly fast learning rate. She becomes proficient in swordplay after just a few lessons from Alvin, and later reveals to Rowen that she learns all her Spirit Artes through instinct.
- The Kirk: Of the initial trio. Milla isn't as quick to help others as Jude, as is even willing to leave a town of defenceless villagers to fend for themselves if it would interfere with her mission. On the other hand, she's not as pragmatic as Alvin and, unlike him, she admires Jude for being a 'do-gooder'. And as the above tropes prove, she definitely isn't above putting Honor Before Reason.
- Lady of War: Although her social skills are lacking, she happens to have a fair bit of grace in her combat style.
- Made of Iron: She has to be. She had the leg brace (The one that killed another girl) blow up on her. Three times. And the first two times she SHRUGS OFF. The third time? She just becomes a paraplegic. This is followed by her forcing herself up after having her legs recover (With a certified doctor saying it takes at LEAST two months to have this work without knocking out a patient due to the intense pain) so she can kick a worm's ass that was trying to kill her friends.
- Magic Knight: Milla is one of the few Tales characters of this trope to not lean on one side, and instead is right in the middle.
- More Than Mind Control: Milla honestly believes that she is the genuine Maxwell because she has been raised from birth to believe so. Perpetuating the lie is the fact that the four Greater Spirits serve only her (and are in on it, on the real Maxwell's orders) and that she was raised in a village that worshipped her as the Maxwell.
- Multicolored Hair: Fridge Brilliance. As Maxwell, it makes sense for her to represent different elements at once.
- Nerves of Steel: Milla faces damn near everything stoically, up to and including her own death.
- Nice Girl: Not at first, but she's one in earnest by the end.
- No Social Skills: All of her knowledge of humans comes from books, and it shows. Played for Laughs, especially in most of the early skits, where she and Jude hold conversations with entirely different interpretations of what the other means.
- There are moments, though, when this causes problems. Such as when the party need to get wyverns, Milla flat out tells the owners they are going to take them, with a deliberate intention of just walking away with them.
- Not So Stoic: While normally straight-laced and practical, she can get extremely heated and angry when the situation calls for it. While infrequent, it manages to terrify the others whenever it happens.
- Panty Shot: Thanks to her Dangerously Short Skirt, this happens frequently.
- Pet the Dog: A heroic example. Even if Ivar does show himself out to be fairly incompetent compared to Jude, she does still show a bit of a soft spot for him, such as when she entrusts him with the Key to the Spear of Kresnik.
- The Protagonist: If you choose her route.
- Purple Eyes
- Stripperiffic: Her clothes really don't look like they should be worn on the battlefield...
- Well, her outfit was chosen by a sixteen-year-old boy.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: With Jude. In the ending she become the goddess of Liese Maxia and cannot stay with him.
- Summon Magic: Can summon the Four to fight for her, among other things.
- Took a Level In Badass: Takes several throughout the game as she regains the fighting abilities that she originally needed the Spirits to use.
Jude Mathis[]
Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga (Japanese) and Sam Riegel (English) |
"You might say I'm nosy or naive, but I just can't leave you alone." |
A fifteen-year-old medical student studying in Il Fan, the capital of La Schugall. Despite his young age, Jude is level-headed, analytical and highly intelligent.
His special ability Integration Evasion allows him to Flash Step to an enemy's rear if he dodges an attack, while his Support Skill Restore picks up his Link partner when they are knocked down and restores some of their health.
Tropes associated with Jude:
- Adorkable: He definitely has his moments.
- All-Loving Hero: Helps strangers without a thought? Check. Kind to everyone? Check. Willing to forgive his enemies. Check!
- Awesomeness By Analysis: There's even a sound effect when he's using his hyper-awareness to figure something out.
- Badass: In the trailers, he dodges a sniper arrow with an unfazed look on his face. There's probably gonna be more where that came from.
- Badass Normal: By the standards of the game's universe. Magic in Xillia seems to come from pacts with the spirits. Since Jude hasn't been seen using a single spirit arte, this implies that all of his abilities are the rest of training and improvisation, including his Restore ability.
- Took a Level In Badass: During the battle with the real Maxwell.
- Elemental Powers: Like Asbel, Jude is a rarity among Tales protagonists in that he doesn't specialise in one particular element. He uses a mixture of them all.
- Blow You Away: His primary element. Used in his Mystic Arte.
- Casting a Shadow
- Dishing Out Dirt
- Light'Em Up
- Making a Splash
- Playing with Fire
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: This tendency often gets Jude into trouble, and is in fact what led to him getting involved with the plot in the first place. Occasionally lampshaded by other characters who refer to him as a habitual "do-gooder".
- Combat Medic: He's a medical student. Who punches his enemies in the face...
- Combat Pragmatist: Jude has a habit of noting areas and items that can be used to assist in a fight such as shooting loose rocks, or plants that cause a gas. Unlike most examples, this isn't from his personality as it's more based on his intelligence.
- Desperately Looking for a Purpose In Life: Pretty much his whole Character Development. Early on, Jude simply follows what Milla does because he doesn't know what to do. Milla encourages him to find his own purpose but he never truly does until her Heroic Sacrifice. This causes Jude to realize he needs to find one. He eventually does: solve Elympios' mana problems by perfecting spyrite technology.
- Determinator: Even Gaius is impressed by how much Jude absolutely refuses to back down from his ideals.
- Deuteragonist: If you choose Milla.
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Did you just punch through the real Maxwell's barrier and knock him across the stage?
- Expy: His design is pretty much what happens when you mix Yuri, Leon, and Asbel into a pot with Senel's fighting style.
- Which makes sense, considering those first three ranked the three most popular characters in the the Tales (series)' fifth Popularity Poll.
- Gratuitous English: "TEACH ME BARIBOOOO!!!.
- Heroic BSOD: After Milla pulls a Heroic Sacrifice, he falls into one that's so bad it takes Alvin trying to kill him (and nearly doing so to Leia) to snap him (and the mercenary) out of it.
- Hyper Awareness: He's demonstrated this from time to time.
- Idiot Hero: Subverted. He's very book smart, despite being a bit impulsive, but he's a little slow when it comes to real-world events.
- It Gets Easier: Jude struggles with having to fight to survive early on and discusses this trope with both Alvin and Rowen. By the end, he's so adjusted to it that Alvin points out he could easily be a mercenary like him if he wanted to, to which every member of the group objects.
- Likes Older Women: Admits so himself. Luckily for the fans who shipped him with Milla, even before the game's release.
- Lightning Bruiser: He is not only easily the fastest character in the game but also the sturdiest (Leia has more Vitality stat but Jude has more HP and armor defense). He is also capable of throwing out some of the highest damage and once he learns "Shattering Demon Fist," he is widely considered a straight-up gamebreaker.
- The McCoy: Of the initial trio. Jude is described by his own mother as being too quick to help others, which is proven by his Chronic Hero Syndrome. He's also easily distracted, often getting concerned with things that have nothing to do with the task at hand. He's called out on this by Alvin, who accuses him of poking his nose where it doesn't belong.
- Name's the Same: Oh so narrowly averted. He's (hilariously) one letter away from being Judge Mathis. It's either a coincidence or a truly bizarre Shout-Out.
- Nerves of Steel: Though at first he's more freaked out at things (understandably) at times, in the heat of the moment he's always calm. Even when someone with a crossbow is targeting him, he doesn't lose his cool. As someone who has almost completed his medical doctorate this makes sense. However, he's (according to Leia) always been like this (Milla thinks it is because of Leia and her "sparring time!")
- Nice Guy: To a fault.
[After the party realizes that Agria had been stomping on his head while he was unconscious] |
- Power Fist: Some of his fist weapons look like this.
- The Protagonist: If you choose his route.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The sensitive guy to Alvin's manly man.
- Shorter Means Smarter: Anybody who's so much as contemplating studying medicine will tell you that it requires a lot of brains. Jude is a complete shrimp when compared to any of the other Tales leads, even those who are the same age as him.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: With Milla
- Supporting Protagonist: Becomes this if you choose his route, since Milla is still obviously The Hero.
- Vocal Evolution: When the game was first unveiled, Jude didn't sound like he was anywhere near puberty. Since then, Tsubasa Yonaga's voice seems to have changed somewhat. Just compare his line in the first trailer to his ones in the fourth, for example.
- Younger Than They Look: He's fifteen. He doesn't look it at all. On the other hand, he sounds a lot younger than he looks, and he's also shorter than some expected in comparison to his looks. He's about 5' 4", which, while not abnormal for a boy his age, is shorter than the baby-faced 15-year-old hero of Tales of Innocence, Ruca.
- Worthy Opponent: Is eventually considered one by Gaius.
Alvin (Alfred Vint Svent)[]
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese) and Matthew Mercer (English) |
[]
"I won't betray you anymore, I promise... If I do betray you again, then you're welcome to strike me down by your own sword. That's why, please let me come with you." |
A smooth-talking mercenary who has travelled over the entire world. Though powerful and charismatic, Alvin is ridiculously untrustworthy and hides a cold and calculating personality beneath his joshing smile.
His special ability Charge allows him to combine his gun and sword, increasing the power of his artes and even changing them. His Support Skill Breaker is used to break the guard of a defending enemy.
Tropes associated with Alvin:
- Affably Evil: He'll stab you in the back so many times you could swap his character model for Revolver Ocelot's and nobody would notice the difference but, at the same time, he's a surprisingly nice guy who means well.
- Anti-Hero: Mostly a Type III, but puts a foot into Type V territory once or twice when he's at his treacherous and sociopathic worst. Eventually develops into more of a traditional Type III.
- The Atoner: After finally being done back-stabbing the group for good, Alvin decides to make up for what he's done with whatever he can do.
- Badass: His design is awesome to begin with, but the latest story trailer confirmed it by showing him shoot an Elite Mook with a chainsaw for a hand in the face. After that, he just turns around and rejoins the fray like nothing happened.
- Badass Coat
- Badass Normal: For the same reasons as Jude. It is later revealed that as a citizen of Elenpios, Alvin does not have a "Gate" and cannot create mana, essentially making him unable to use Spirit Artes at all.
- Being Treacherous Sucks: It's established ridiculously early on that Alvin is not to be trusted and he soon proves to have a serious case of Chronic Backstabbing Disorder. Yet it causes him a fair deal of angst because, since he was raised as a child spy, he doesn't know any other way to live.
- Big Brother Mentor: Played with, because it's implied by the latest story trailer that he sees himself as this to Jude, but he views him more as just being a bit weird. It eventually gets flipped around when you realise that Alvin is much less adjusted to reality than Jude due to his lack of being able to form real attachments.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed mostly, but despite coming off as very friendly and kind-hearted (especially for a mercenary), he soon reveals himself to be very devious and treacherous.
- Blood Knight: He seems to rather rather enjoy kicking Mooks about.
- Bystander Syndrome: While Milla will at least try to help people if she thinks she can, Alvin always stays focused on the task at hand, and tells Jude he can't get involved in other people's business. He'd be right too, if this were a more cynical story than he seems to believe.
- Child Spy
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: This pretty much defines Alvin's character. It's so bad that at one point he has to plead with the party to let him continue travelling with them, and promises to let them kill him if he betrays them again. And he still betrays them one last time!
- Consummate Liar: At first, but it gradually deteriorates as people become wise to his tricks.
- Dating Catwoman: Somewhat, as there's a bit of Ship Tease between him and Presa.
- He used to date her, which is why there's so much UST between them.
- Easily Forgiven: Entirely averted. Nobody in the group once lets him off the hook for the moments he betrays them, and constantly point out how they have every right to not forgive him but want to believe he truly is a good person.
- Elemental Powers
- Blow You Away
- Casting a Shadow
- Dishing Out Dirt
- Light'Em Up
- Making a Splash
- Playing with Fire: His primary element. Used in his Mystic Arte.
- Pure Energy
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas
- Foil: He provides a cynical, not to mention very treacherous, one to Jude and Milla's goodness and loyalty.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Come the final chapter and he's definitely this; between all the backstabbing he did, shooting Leia who was previously one of his supporters, and spending a lot of time as a Jerkass they mostly just keep him around because Jude is that nice and insists on giving him yet another chance. Of course, by this point he realizes it and is working to make up for things.
- Gangsta Style: Does he ever hold his gun upright?
- Heel Face Revolving Door: He spends a good portion of the game seemingly playing every side of the conflict, nonchalantly betraying and returning to the party so frequently that "Liar" becomes a de facto nickname for him with Elise and Jude. If there is a virtuous side to his behaviour, it's that he's usually sincere about his loyalties and why he switches sides.
- Reliable Traitor: Despite everything, Jude trusts him because even if he doesn't agree, he understands Jude's decisions and feelings. He sticks with the party in the end though, but not before some holy shit moments.
- Hired Sword: For basically the entire game.
- Hypocrite: Accuses Milla of being "single-minded" when the entire reason he's a mercenary in the first place is to take care of his mother and return them both to Elympios. A noble goal, sure, but then again so is Milla's. Not to mention kicking a puppy just for being in the way sounds a lot more like something he would do.
- Japanese Pronouns: Uses the antiquated otaku for "you".
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: What he eventually develops into.
- Knight in Sour Armor: Becomes this by the end of the game; he knows he's got a long way to go before anyone will trust or want to be friends with him after what he's done, but is determined to make something of himself regardless.
- Magnificent Bastard: An in-universe Deconstruction that shows what happens when someone who doesn't have the stomach for it tries to be one. Alvin is suave, charismatic, calculating and is out to do the best for his mother. However, as time goes on and he keeps betraying people, he continually loses their trust, earns the nickname "Liar" and eventually finds out that he's been played for a fool all along, causing the start of a Villainous Breakdown that culminates with Alvin shooting and nearly killing one of his friends. He finally realises then just how much of a douche he's been, to the point where he wants to rebuild his relationships but is worried that he's burnt his bridges.
- Meaningful Name: His Mystic Arte is one of the few in the series that relates to a character trait: "Expendable Pride".
- The English dub changes it to Terminus Pride instead. Terminus means a finishing goal or point. This references the fact he's willing to give up any pride he has to get his goal.
- My God, What Have I Done?: He goes way too far in trying to snap Jude out of his slump by attacking him and eventually, accidentally, shooting Leia while she was trying to defend him.
- Nerves of Steel: Tends to be very calm almost all the time, though there are occasions when he loses his cool.
- Nice Guy: His attitude is stated to be "mature and friendly". Then again, see Bitch in Sheep's Clothing above.
- One Head Taller: Than all of the other party members sans Rowen.
- Necktie Of Asskicking: That is one impressive piece of neckwear.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The manly man to Jude's sensitive guy.
- Shadow Archetype: Word of God states that Alvin is what Jude would have become had he not met Milla and joined her on her quest.
- The Spock: Of the initial trio. Alvin has the most logic and common sense, always staying focused on the task at hand and calling out Jude early on for his Chronic Hero Syndrome, saying he has a nasty habit of poking his nose where it doesn't belong.
- Stupid Neutral: While your mileage will of course vary about alignments, Alvin's actions over the course of the game deconstruct the selfish, backstabbing, borderline-insane kind of neutral character in-universe by showing just how empty and meaningless such an existence is. Alvin is loyal to nobody and will quite happily backstab the people he's been working with for years for entirely arbitrary reasons. The game ultimately shows that he doesn't have much in his life beyond backstabbing everyone around him and by the point he decides that he has to change, he realises that it may be too late for him.
- Sword and Gun: His weapons of choice.
- The Tease: He's got a bit of an affinity for the ladies, and he definitely has the charm to pull it off.
- Tritagonist: His screen-time, Character Development and role in the story is second only to that of Milla and Jude's.
- Troll: One of Alvin's favourite past-times seems to twist words and events to wind Jude up.
- Then there's that time he convinced Elize that wyverns liked to eat the souls of small sleeping children.
- Unwitting Pawn: Gilland raised him as a spy and kept him in the dark about the Lance of Kresnik's true purpose, and realising just how much he was being used marks the start of his Sanity Slippage.
Elise Lutus[]
Voiced by: Yuki Horinaka (Elize, Japanese), Karen Strassman (Elize, English), Haruna Ikezawa (Japanese, Teepo) and Erin Fitzgerald (English, Teepo) |
"I'm going... with my friends. I don't want to be alone anymore!" |
A young and timid girl who is ostracised from her village. Her only friend is Tipo, a chatty plush doll who is somehow sentient. Though Elise is incredibly shy, she is a powerful user of Spirit Artes.
Her special ability Change Tipo gives her two stances: during "Tipo ON" the power of her magical spells is increased, while during "Tipo OFF" she can use Tipo to attack in melee and defend her while casting spells. Her Support ability HP Steal drains health from enemies and grants it to both Elise and her Link partner.
Tropes associated with Elise:
- Amplifier Artifact : Teepo, who is both a Booster and an early prototype of Origin technology, thus explaining how Elise is able to use powerful Spirit Artes at such a young age
- The Chick: A more traditional version than Leia.
- The Cutie: D'aww...
- Break the Cutie: When Tipo is reset and reveals that whenever he talks it's just Elise's innermost thoughts she does not take it well.
- Cast From HP: Storywise, as Boosters drain the life from their users.
- Chekhov's Gun: Tipo, who is an early prototype for Origin technology.
- Covert Pervert: When Tipo "hugs" Milla, he does so by vigorously motorboating her. Then you find out that Tipo's personality is composed of Elise's innermost thoughts.
- Curtains Match the Window
- Dark Is Not Evil: Despite using dark spells, she's one of the most kindhearted characters in the game.
- Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Tipo frequently blabs some of Elise's most embarrassing secrets and opinions, much to her distress. That's because Tipo is voicing her innermost thoughts.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita
- Elemental Powers
- Blow You Away
- Casting a Shadow: Rather unusually for a primary healer, this is her primary element. Used in her Mystic Arte.
- Dishing Out Dirt
- Eyes of Gold / Green Eyes: Gold in animated cutscenes and portraits, green on her character model.
- Fragile Flower
- Girly Run: Outside of battle, at least.
- Gratuitous English: Tipo. "Oh, no...!"
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold:
- Heroic Self-Deprecation: Belittles herself often, thanks to having no confidence in herself.
- Housewife: What she aspires to be. Specifically, Jude's.
- Large Ham: Tipo rather enjoys Chewing the Scenery... and people's faces.
- Little Miss Snarker: It's hard to see at first, but then you realise that she and Jude are the ones who refer to Alvin as "Liar"...
- Luminescent Blush: Often when Jude comforts or praises her. It's a wonder her whole face doesn't turn red when she blushes.
- The Medic: More so than Leia, since Elize happens to have accesses to area-of-effect healing spell.
- No Cure For Darkness: Subverted. Despite being the resident dark mage, she is also one of the two primary healers.
- Nice Girl: Easily one of the nicest characters in the game.
- Non-Human Sidekick: Tipo, the talking doll. Which she uses as a weapon.
- Not Good with People: Limited contact with friendly people made her very timid of them. At first, she only really speaks to Jude, but soon opens up to the others.
- Plucky Girl
- The Scapegoat
- Shrinking Violet: Very shy, and so lets Teepo do most of the talking for her.
- Simple Staff: Uses a wand in battle along with Tipo.
- Tagalong Kid: Very, very briefly.
- Token Mini-Moe: More so than other child characters in the series, especially because she behaves more like a kid than they did (which is to say, that unlike them, she doesn't display more maturity than her age would imply).
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Leia's Tomboy.
- Team Pet: Teepo. It may be a doll, but it counts.
- Ugly Cute: Teepo. It's downright creepy, but cute.
Leia Rolando[]

[]
"There's nothing wrong with trying your hardest to reach something!" |
A perky apprentice nurse from Jude's hometown. Leia is Jude's childhood friend and training partner. She is a massive fan of sports, although she favours effort over victory.
Her special ability is Extension, which increases the reach of her weapon if she dodges an attack. Her Support ability Item Steal gives her a chance to steal rare items from a downed enemy.
Tropes associated with Leia:
- Action Girl: Sure, her weapon is a staff. But look at her in combat. She shows fighting skills on par of someone who uses rods to kick some serious asses in Tales series before.
- The Chick: With a few hints of The Big Girl due to her combat prowess.
- Combat Medic: In the same manner as Natalia and Sophie. She specializes in powerful single-target healing spells and physical combat.
- Childhood Friends: With Jude.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Leia is a lot more emotionally-mature and stable than she lets on. She essentially acts as The Ditz as a way to play Cool Big Sis, supporting people through her sunny and optimistic disposition.
- Cute Bruiser
- The Cutie: Very much so.
- Deadpan Snarker: The biggest of the group. Jude gets most of it.
Leia: Fine, message received, loud and clear! You met all sorts of girls while you were away! Good job, Jude. I'm so happy for you! |
- Elemental Powers:
- Blow You Away
- Dishing Out Dirt: Her primary element. Used in her Mystic Arte.
- Making a Splash
- Playing with Fire
- Expy: She so looks like Natalia. Maybe she's the real one?
- Fiery Redhead: She's got the hair, and her expression's similarly optimistic, too.
- Genki Girl: Complete with big, bright cheery expression.
- An inter-dimensional portal possibly leading to a death match with no return to the former world? To quote Leia, with a cheery voice and smile, "I call dibs on going first!"
- Magic Knight
- Simple Staff
- Staff Chick: Double subverted. She uses clubs and staffs, but she seems to focus more on hitting people with them rather than healing them. Despite this, she's still the party's master of single-target healing.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Elise's girly girl.
- Tsundere: Type B. She's very kind and friendly most of the time, but Jude has a bad habit of sending her into Sarcasm Mode.
- Woman in White: Subverted. She's clad entirely in white, but her personality is the exact opposite of this trope.

- Battle Butler
- Cool Old Guy
- Chivalrous Pervert
- Elemental Powers
- An Ice Person: By combining Water and Earth. Also used in his Mystic Arte.

- Playing with Fire
- Gratuitous English
- Magic Knight: Although he leans more towards the magical side of things than the melee ones.
- Mugihito
- Musical Assassin: His Personal Skill accompanies his spells with music when the right command is done.
- Mysterious Middle Initial
- The Red Baron: "Conductor" Ilbert
- Royal Rapier
- Shipper on Deck: He seems interested in Jude's feelings for Milla, and even teases him about them.
- Squishy Wizard: The strongest caster in the game, bar none, but also the one with the least HP.
- Team Dad: Inevitable, given that he's the oldest and most mature of the group by a wide margin.
