  • Abandon Shipping: Once Steve/Aja became an Official Couple, the other Steve ships died out rather quickly.
  • Adaptation Displacement: Trollhunters was originally a book. The book has been quite comprehensively overshadowed by the trilogy.
  • And You Thought It Would Fail: No one thought 3Below would outright fail but many considered Trollhunters a Tough Act to Follow. But 3Below proved just as popular.
  • Author's Saving Throw: 3Below addressed two major criticisms of Trollhunters. First, it developed some of the rather popular side characters, then it had the whole of the Muggles be aware of the threat and take a stand to defend their home.
  • Broken Base: Jim being permanently made half-Troll. Clever and a good shake up or does it cheapen, if not outright contradict, why he was chosen by the Amulet in the first place?
  • Cargo Ship: Señor Uhl and his beloved truck, Susannah.
  • Cliché Storm: Trollhunters is every young adult fantasy novel and 3Below is every cheap 1950s sci-fi cliché. Though it proves that Tropes Are Not Bad as both shows are beloved regardless.
  • Crossover Ship: For a given value of "Crossover", but Aja/Jim is decently popular.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Strickler. Eventually became canon thanks to his Heel Face Turn.
  • Ear Worm:
    • "1! 2! 3 Below!"
    • "Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!"
  • Ensemble Darkhorse:
    • Blinky's older brother Dictatious. Helps that he's voiced by Mark Hamill.
    • The Zeron Brotherhood, Alpha in particular.
    • Tronos due to his tragic backstory and Heel Face Door Slam.
  • Fandom Specific Plot:
    • X is a Changeling or an alien.
    • Someone else, usually Claire, finds the Amulet of Daylight.
    • Following Jim's quest for a new Heartstone.
    • Jim becomes fully human once again.
  • Fanon: Aja and Krel are descended from Seklos and Gaylen.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Claire has some detractors but her and Jim's pairing is by the far the most popular one in the saga.
  • First Installment Wins: Given that it's longer storyline allows for more expansive Character Development, and that it's not limited by Simultaneous Arcs and previous canon, Trollhunters is the overall favourite of the shows released. Not that 3Below is anything less than beloved.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • As a whole, the trilogy is quite friendly with the fandom of Ben 10, both being Science Fantasy sagas concentrated on a little Californian town, the main hero having a Transformation Trinket, Alien Among Us abounds, and wizards are off doing who knows what.
    • As the show's Spiritual Successor, Trollhunters is very friendly with Transformers Prime. The myriad of similarities, from basic appearance to their personality, between Jack Darby and Jim Lake help.
    • As the Trolls are sentient beings of stone and the Akiridions are Starfish Aliens whose consciousness is held within one part of their biology that can survive their physical form's destruction, the saga has lots of fans who also enjoy Steven Universe. Helped by Jim's quest to guide the Trolls to Hoboken, New Jersey which is close to where Beach City is said to be.
    • Also gets along quite well with Percy Jackson & the Olympians.
    • 3Below has some overlap with Solar Opposites given their shared basic premise of an alien family living in a small Californian town.
  • Foe Yay: Before Steve/Aja became canon, Steve/Eli was Steve's most popular pairing.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "For the glory of Merlin."
    • "Awesomesauce."
    • "GLORIOUS!"
  • Narm:
    • The evil Trolls are called the Gumm-Gumms.
    • People really do call him "Not-Enrique."
    • PARKING DRONES!
  • Older Than They Think: "Easy Peasy" was not a 3Below original song. It was written by The Kinnardlys circa 2010-2011 for an animated series that never got off the ground.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Merlin. Being an unrepentant Jerkass doesn't help. His portrayal in fanfics ranges from saying that, while Morgana's actions are wrong, her hatred for Merlin is throughly justified to outright making him a villain. He's often portrayed as a Straw Misogynist who indulges in some Fantastic Racism against the Akiridions and other extraterrestrials while also having made Jim half-Troll to serve as an enforcer.
  • The Scrappy: Usurna. She forced her way into Trollmarket, was prepared to take AARRRGGHH!!! from his friends and family, and sabotaged Jim's trial. And she accrued all this hatred before she was revealed to be a spy for Gunmar.
  • Ship Mates: No one is allowed to touch the Official Couples of Jim/Claire, Toby/Darci, and Steve/Aja. Sometimes Eli/Krel shows up. And don't even think of touching the Beta Couples of Walter/Barbara or Varvatos/Nancy.
  • Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped: 3Below is not shy in pointing out how difficult life can initially be for immigrants in the United States and how much discrimination they can face from the white majority and the government. "Alien" is more often used in its mundane context than its sci-fi one.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Everyone treats Councilwoman Nuñez as wrong for wanting to alert the authorities to the existence of the Trolls. But the people do have a right to know that they're in danger and, as many have commented on in the series, Muggles Do It Better. Ursurna even tells Gunmar that he should look to steal some human weapons if he really wants to wreak devastation.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Upon finding out that Jim in the Trollhunter, Strickler instantly cuts off from his pupil, showing no conflict about harming Jim until he starts to crush on Barbara.
    • Aja and Krel have a Broken Pedestal moment when they learn that their parents abandoned Tronos' planet. Nothing comes from this. It may be addressed in Wizards.
  • Unexpected Character: Kept underwraps for so long, Wizards was bound to have this but two characters no one expected to see were Bular (who memorably died in Trollhunters and hadn't been mentioned after its second season) and King Arthur.
