The second instalment in the Tales of Arcadia trilogy, 3Below follows the adventures of two alien royals, Aja and Krel of House Tarron fleeing a coup on their homeworld of Akiridion-5. Accompannied by General Varvatos Vex, the royals hide out on the planet Earth in the small town of Arcadia.
Tropes used in 3Below include:
- A God Am I: Morando absorbs Gaylen's core in the Season 2 finale and gains godly power but is defeated before he can really do anything with it.
- Aliens Speaking English: Deconstructed. They can speak it just fine. Understanding its idioms is another matter entirely.
- Ascended Extra: Several of Arcadia's background characters, most prominently Stuart.
- Crossover: "D'aja Vu" with Trollhunters.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Given that it seems to be his Berserk Button, Señor Uhl appears to have faced discrimination over his immigrant status in the past.
- Demoted to Extra: While Toby, Steve, Eli and AAARRRGGHH!!! still have big roles to play, Jim, Claire and Blinky do not.
- Genre Shift: Trollhunters was fantasy. This is sci-fi.
- Humanity Ensues: The specifics are not elaborated on but the Royals and Varvatos don't just slip on holograms. Their disguises have all the disadvantages of a human body compared to their natural forms.
- Humans Need Aliens: Even though Aja and Krell are the cause for all the alien threats, only the Akiridions can defeat the bounty hunters. Even magical weapons aren't effective.
- Insignificant Little Blue Planet: Described by MOTHER as "named after dirt." Subverted in Season 2. The Akiridion database was edited to make it seem like this was the case.
- Mechanical Lifeforms: The Cindorites.
- Numbered Homeworld: Akiridion-5.
- Perspective Flip: Episode 9 "Lighting in a Bottle" is "In Good Hands" from Trollhunters only told from Aja and Krel's POV. There are some differences but nothing too major.
- Physical God: Seklos and Gaylen.
- Planet of Steves: The Foo-Foos.
- Orcus on His Throne: Morando in the first season.
- Reality Ensues:
- Comparing the Akiridions and Stuart will show that it takes a lot of time to learn the idioms and sayings of a totally alien culture.
- Jerkass Obstructive Bureaucrat Ms. Flannigan, really an alien bounty hunter, may be, she's right in saying that students can't just "drop out of the sky" and enrol in a school. There's a fair amount of paperwork involved.
- As Toby reminds everyone, you cannot miss forty-five days of school for Trollhunting without serious consequences to your GPA.
- Rock Beats Laser: Averted. One on one, alien technology defeats Troll magic.
- Sequel Hook: More overt than Trollhunters. Jim and Blinky cameo fighting off a threat in Hoboken and during the last few minutes, a talking cat that AAARRRGGHH!!! identifies as a familiar tells AAARRRGGHH!!!, Toby, and Steve that he needs their help to save the world.
- Sequel Series: To Trollhunters.
- Shaggy Dog Story: After Aja and Krel spend two whole seasons trying to save their parents' life cores, their parents pull a Heroic Sacrifice.
- Tron Lines: On everything alien.
