Tropedia

  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

Due to the show having many contestants, this page is made to avoid overdosing the main page.

Jeff Probst[]

  • Armchair Psychology
  • Berserk Button: He's normally pretty level-headed, but if someone quits, he immediately starts frowning and talking down to them. The only exceptions are if they're having a mental breakdown (Kathy), have a family emergency (Jenna) or are trying to quit as a gameplay maneuver. (Janu) he's a lot more sympathetic to people who just commit Suicide by Cop or have a Game-Breaking Injury or sickness.
  • Characterization Marches On: Probst becomes a lot more aggressive with his questioning of players and biased in his interpretations as the seasons go on. Many fans celebrate this as him coming into his own and keeping the players on their toes, while a smaller portion of the audience feel that he Took a Level In Jerkass.
  • Character Shilling: It's been happening for years. But the Redemption Island reunion? Ugghh - hey did you know Probst thinks Rob is awesome? And Phillip is crazy? And Russel may return? And that Rob is Awesome? Francesca, Kristina, the Zapatera tribe? Who're they?
    • Once they threw a challenge to dispose of Russell, we did get to learn a bit about the "Zaps."
  • Cool Old Guy: Thailand onwards.
  • Cool Shades
  • Cursed with Awesome
  • Elimination Catchphrase: "The tribe has spoken; it's time for you to go."
  • Executive Meddling: Being an executive producer in recent seasons has led to some, well, questionable decisions. Like Redemption Island purportedly being entirely his idea, for instance.
    • A lot of viewers were irritated during Palau when it looked like Jeff was pushing Janu into quitting in order to save Stephanie. Janu did in fact want to go home, but she had agreed with her tribe to wait until Stephanie was gone, so Jeff calling off Tribal Council seemed really fishy. It was also combined with some Manipulative Editing - where he stops and asks if Janu could serve on the jury.
  • Game Show Host
  • Memetic Outfit
  • Nice Hat: He has several. The most frequently-used is a baseball cap with the show's logo.
  • Refuge in Audacity
  • Older Than They Look: He doesn't look like in his late 40s, which is quite surprising given how much sun he's gotten over the years!
  • Unreliable Narrator: Did you know that someone in Redemption Island actually found the hidden immunity idol before the first tribal council? Given his recap of the season, you'd actually be very surprised to find that out.
    • His intense dislike for the Fangs in Gabon is highly obvious.
    • It's also pretty obvious he dislikes a couple contestants; namely Johny Fairplay and Jonathan Penner.
      • Penner may just be a case of Sitcom Arch Nemesis. Fairplay, though, Probst has outright confirmed his legitimate dislike for as a person. The feelings are mutual on Fairplay's end.
