Phoenix's SSBB case files by ShadowKnux372 (some AU, crossover)

  • Recommended by User:Da Patman
  • Status:
  • What if the Ace Attorney series was set in a world containing various locations from different Nintendo series, where Phoenix has to defend characters who appear in the Super Smash Bros series? The answer is simple. You get different people being murdered, and the pop culture references are all related to the series the characters come from, but apart from that, there's no difference. The cases are written as if ShadowKnux372 is copying the text down while playing the cases, and most of them are set in different continuities from each other and the actual Ace Attorney games. It's not just Phoenix who does the defending, either. Apollo and Mia both get a chance to defend, as do two characters from the Ace Attorney side you would never expect to see as attorneys. It has its own page.

Link's Smashing Journal by Linira.

  • Recommended by: Woodrow
  • Status: In progress.
  • Synopsis: A humorous fic that shows Link's didain towards/approval of all the characters.
  • Comments: It's in progress, with updates about once a week. Be warned, Link has a crush on Samus and a potty-mouth.

One Last Smash by Rabid Wookiee Y.

  • Recommended by: User:Dark Marx Soul, koook 160
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: The Master and Crazy Hands were defeated along with Giga Bowser years ago and the Super Smash Bros. faced a golden age. However, times changed and their team broke down. When Giga Bowser returns demanding a final battle with the Smashers, what will the broken band of heroes and villains do with their numbers so decreased?
  • Comments: This is a fantastic fan fiction. In fact, I could even say that it is the greatest fan fiction that I have personally ever read. Being written before Super Smash Bros. Brawl was announced, One Last Smash focusses on the heroes that starred in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, giving a detailed and immaculately fitting backstory to the two games that easily fits into the canon continuity of each franchises' respective storylines. All of the characters are written exactly as their personalities dictate they should and speak in ways that reflect their minds. Each and every one of the twenty-five characters are focussed on equally and several new characters are introduced that weren't in the original games, some from Brawl, some not. The fight scenes are brilliantly done and there is even some romance done between characters of difference franchises, though not in any ways that are unnatural or that go against a character's canon personality. Be warned, however: not all characters will survive this story and by the end it is clear that One Last Smash isn't meant to fit into the canon of the games. There are many sad scenes involving this fact, but these are amazingly done as well. Anyone with a love for action, romance, tragedy, humour, and, of course, crossovers should read this fan fiction. It isn't my absolute favourite for no reason.

Oneless by Grand Phoenix

  • Recommended by Zagreus
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: A philosophical and spiritual look at Tabuu and what drives him to conquer the universe.
  • Comments: Simply beautiful. The prose is of the highest quality, having a tone somwhere between the Bible and the ancient legends of gods. The story seamlessly fits into the Subspace Emissary storyline, explaining most of the backstory of Tabuu and the Hands as well as creating a fully fleshed out story centering around them. A fantastic read.

Clash of the Smashers by Lord Drash

  • Recommended by The_Omegod
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: An adventure like no other! Ten...nine heroes band together to stop Master Hand from combining forces with the villains from multiple worlds, and starting a third and final tournament...But can the heroes themselves be trusted?
  • Comments: This story is...complicated, to say the least. I fully recommend it and anyone who makes to the end of this epic will surely enjoy it. The only problem is getting there. The beginning is weak, and in fact it is what most people think of when they think of bad fanfic: Poorly developed characters, awkward attempts at humor, lots of random combat and an annoying amount of spelling and grammatical mistakes. Yet the story fights past that, and if you can force yourself to finish the first ten chapters you're past the hard part and the rest gets progressively closer to gold. I will not lie, this story is far from perfect, but it is good and the final chapters are some of the most amazing things I have ever read. The actions scenes are top-notch, far beyond what they should be, and the story is dark, at least when it seeps in. Honestly, if you hate it I don't blame you, I did too at parts...but some of it is just so ingenious it took my breath away. In the end, the story is fun. It is a fun, addictive read and it can be hard to stop for several reasons, not the least of which is too see which baddy pops up next. Give this one a try at least and you may find yourself pleasantly surprised.

What Lies in the Dark by Baby Gurl 278. Contains violence, language, and some gore.

  • Recommended by Herr Wozzeck
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: The Super Smash Brothers live comfortably in their own little mansion. When Falco is abruptly killed by a mysterious attacker, however, Fox finds that he was writing a murder mystery. When others in the mansion begin to die in ways mysteriously connected to the book, it becomes a race against time to save the smashers before every murder in the book is carried out. [Completed]
  • Comments: Barring a premise involving Out of Character actions (plus bandwagon issues if you count in the fact that at the time it was written killing off Falco first was the thing to do in SSB murder mysteries), we have ourselves a very tense murder mystery. It takes a different angle on traditional murder mystery faire, though; there's an aspect of whodunnit (or in this case, whodoinnit), but the emphasis is more like Final Destination where Fox attempts to stop the murders from happening since he knows what will happen to whom--but not when. As well, there is a lot of emotion coming from the rather large supporting cast, such that we feel as afraid for them as they themselves are for each other. It is also very well-written, and the suspense is kept constant throughout the entire story, straight from Falco's murder to the end of the story. And it was written in 2006, so it stands the test of time!

Life Aboard The Halberd By Wise Crack Idiots. Contains some swearing.

  • Recommended by Rifflet, Lost Lenore
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Synopsis: So after Tabuu was defeated, all of the Brawl characters (minus former villians Bowser, Dedede, Wario and Ganondorf) decide that they liked being together and didn't want to be separated. But where to go? Due to Nintendo's lack of preparation skills for after-story mode gaming, they had nowhere to crash. So who had a place big enough to support 35+ Brawl characters? Why, Meta Knight, of course! And we come to you to present the most insanely, wildly funny fanfiction you'll ever read about their day-to-day lifestyles on the Halberd.
  • Comments: This fic is one of the single funniest stories I have ever read, in any fandom. Setting up simple, everyday situations... But having everything go to Hell. All of the characters (while admittedly Flanderised for the sake of Rule of Funny) are excellent, with Meta Knight being constantly pissed off at the madness of the whole affair and Snake constantly freaking out over assassination attempts, each character gets their own little quirks and traits. You can almost see Meta Knights sanity eroding as you read!
    • LoveIsWeird - It is insane, yet it makes sense. It actually makes sense. Thank you for recommending this hilarious fic to us all!

"The Subspace Emissary's Worlds Conquest" by Aura Channeler Chris.

  • Recommended by Gamerex27, seconded by totlmstr, thirded by Lord Hyper
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • "Synopsis" This is a rather well-writen story of an OC and his Lucario leading the Smash Bros. Characters through another war with the Subspace Emissary. It is far too complicated at this point in time to describe in this small space, but it is much Better Than It Sounds
  • Comments: Despite the OC and the rather average first few chapters, this story is really well-written, and makes for a good Archive Binge too. The grammar may be a little off in the beginning, but this can be excused, since English is apparently not the author's first language. There are insane amounts of crossovers, each with at least 5 chapters devoted to each game world. Like The Interference, this is surely a labor of love, and is a rare example of self-insert fics done right.
    • No really; it is THAT GOOD. Author Insertion done insanely right (and even deconstructed in some chapters), and is one of the longest fanfics: over one million words, over 150 chapters, and STILL ongoing. For newcomers to this fanfic, the above-mentioned beginning chapters are being edited for the purpose of grammatical correction, but only the later chapters (after 50 or so, it's apparent) have small issues. -- User:totlmstr
    • This troper has just started the story and he is already loving it. Seriously, this deserves it's own page.

"SSBB Oneshots" by Soundwave 0107

  • Recommended by Kyrios9
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A HUGE series of connected one-shots spanning 183 chapters that shows the often insane going-ons in the Smash Mansion.
  • While the majority of the fic is comedy (gold) there are some Tearjerker moments as well. The relationships between the characters are very well done, and the writing style is excellent. Beware as it contains swearing and sexual content, though.

"What Goes On" by Great Chicken Miasma

  • Recommended by Mister Dr Bob
  • Status: On hiatus
  • Synopsis: When Marth accidentally kills the Smashers' beloved Wii, Schlemiel, it's up to Ness, Lucas, Kirby, Pikachu and the Ice Climbers to make sure that nobody finds out. At least...that's what it's about at first. It becomes evident early on that nobody is noticing Schlemiel's gone, and a bunch of other crazy stuff happens.
  • I don't really go for slash, so it seems really weird that I'm recommending this story when the author clearly loves the Lucas/Ness pairing. It's not the center of the story though, and it's pretty one-sided (Lucas being the fruity one). Some of the jokes early on are kind of flat, but there's some real gold in here, especially starting with the chapter "Donuts are Evil."

"Food-Mart Frenzy" by Hoverbike Girl

  • Recommended by Rick Tommy
  • Status: On hiatus
  • Synopsis: When the Melee-era Smash Brothers run out of food, they go to the newly-constructed Smash Mart to buy some. But little do they know how action-packed their little shopping trip will be, when not only do they all go their own ways, but they meet up with the Brawl newcomers and several other characters.
  • For the most part, it portrays the characters correctly; for example, Mario, Luigi, and Wario have their accents; Yoshi is capable of speech (he hardly ever is in fan fics, which bothers me), intelligent, and kind; Fox is the fastest; Young Link enjoys Lon Lon Milk; Donkey Kong lacks intelligence; and Captain Falcon is a maniac. Not to mention that it's a blast to read in general, and is also child-friendly. It is also the most articulate story I've read, with very few spelling errors and no grammar, punctuation, or capitalisation errors (though present tense is occasionally mistakenly used in place of past tense), and no all-caps writing (yelling is always in bold-italics).

"Brother Squadron" By Nintendo Nut1

  • Recommended by Zelda Hearts 1337
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: How come this isn't on here already???? This is a beautiful Dark Fic concerning what happened after Super Smash Bros. Melee (brawl wasn't out when this was made). one of the best I've read, It's so made of win I cant describe it. Just read it, you will see.

"Guardians Arise!" By Pit FTW

  • Recommended by Future Cam
  • Status: Ongoing, approaching completion
  • Pairings: Very minor Link/Zelda, usually played for comedy. A few canon pairings from the Smasher's home universes (Or the crack pairing of Ike/Mia) are referenced briefly.
  • Synopsis: An old enemy returns, this time ripping the souls of the Smashers away from their bodies. By taking possession of them, he hopes to take over the Smash World. 100 years later, the Smashers must turn to humans for help. But some just can't get along...That's the official summery anyway. The smashers are turned into balls of inert gas that possess selected humans called Guardians (Just...just go with it), who obtain their powers, at the expense of having a smasher in their head, ranting about life, the universe and everything, as well as occasionally taking control of their bodies. A diverse cast, compromised almost ENTIRELY of Author Avatars of various people the author knows (Tropes Are Not Bad), ranging from a teen mercenary to a pokemon to a TEN-YEAR-OLD GARDENER. Hilarity ensues, along with awesome. Much, much awesome.
  • Comments: Everything about this fanfic is epic, bar one gigantic plot hole. With all the hilarious life-in-Smash-Mansion fics circling the net it's a genuine shock to discover one in which everything got f*****d up. And it is awesome.

Shipping Fics

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Sinful and then its sequel, Hopeful by dreaming-of-storms. First one is M-rated. Second one is T, for violence and language.

  • Recommended by inkweaveramara
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: Sinful is a very well-written PWP about Samus and Zelda. The second story, Hopeful, brings Peach and her own conflicting feelings about the relationship into the mix.
  • Comments: At first you'd think it's weird for Samus and Zelda to be a pair and Peach to be in love with Zelda. In fact, I thought that both these stories were going to be a fanboy's version of Marth and Roy. But then dreaming-of-storms gives us a set of stories that delves into the psyche of all three Nintendo ladies and it's all rather heartbreaking. They're both enjoyable, and full of brilliant characterizations. Hell, Hopeful should be read for Peach's character alone. All in all, they're both enjoyable stories, and deserve a little mention.
    • Lost Lenore - to be fair, you can probably skip Sinful if it's not your kind of thing and move straight to Hopeful. That said, though, as someone who doesn't have a Link/Zelda OTP (Twilight Princess was the first Zelda game I played), I was pleased to find two great pieces of writing on an interesting Zelda/non-Link!pairing. Peach is especially good in the sequel.

A Bar of Soap! by Fatality (contains strong language, violence, and homosexual pairings).

  • Recommended by Bon Us
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Pairings: Link/Lucario, Link/Zelda, Pit/??? (not gonna reveal it here, it's a big reveal later on!), Ike/Marth, Ike/OC
  • Synopsis: One summer, a while after the defeat of Tabuu, a group of the Smashers decides to spend some time relaxing at a lakeside mansion. Over time more friends, both old and new, join them at the mansion, and as tentative romance blossoms and friends struggle with new feelings, a whole lot of crazy, hilarious shit goes down.
  • Comments: Despite usually disliking slash-centric fics, this Troper finds this story hilarious, entertaining and moving at times. The author executes her interpretations of the characters from SSBB very artfully, along with skillfully using characters from outside the series and even outside of gaming entirely at times. Her OCs can be slightly Mary Sue-ish at times, but they are still enjoyable characters nonetheless to someone willing to overlook their minor flaws for the sake of the story.

Mechanism and its oneshot sequel Deviation, by SSBB.Swords (contains yaoi/slash pairings, although nothing explicit)

  • Recommended by Lost Lenore
  • Status: Complete.
  • Pairings: Ike/Marth
  • Comments: Yes, there is a lot of Ike/Marth out there, but this is definitely one of the better stories I've read - well-written with good characterization of both the main and supporting characters. It successfully avoids Wimpification of either main character, unlike many other fics with this pairing. And it's also a good candidate for one of the best modern-AU stories I've read in any fandom. (Bonus points for having absolutely no cross-dressing at all, which is more common than you'd think for Marth in Mike fics).

Dancing With the Smashers by Umbreon Mastah

  • Recommended by Masquerade Actors (Dreamer)
  • Synopsis: A romantic comedy. Master Hand decides[1] to throw a ball for the Smashers, and between people desperate for dates and Peach's attempts to play matchmaker Hilarity Ensues.
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Meta Knight/Jigglypuff, some crack pairings, and use of some in-universe, ex. Fox/Krystal, (all Het, No OCs)
  • Comments: Very well written with generally only mild cases of OOC (Mario however does seem very OOC). Although Meta Knight and Jigglypuff are the main characters, the supporting cast is just as interesting. The story and the jokes flow with the story. Although there are crack pairings, they are written in a believable way.

Doppelgänger by TheWestDriver

  • Recommended by Pichu
  • Synopsis: Sheik hates them both, and no one knows where it all began. Samus Zelda femslash. Part 1 of the Flinch series.
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Zelda/Samus
  • Comments: As said it was a part of a three part fanfic series. It's a rather dark work but nothing too mature or potentially disturbing. It's pretty well-written and doesn't seem that OOC.
