Tir McDohl (The Hero)

• Artifact of Doom: The Soul Eater rune.

• The Chosen One: Selected by Leknaat the seer as the one to unite the Toran people against the Emperor's forces.
• Cool Hat: His bandana.
• Four-Star Badass: Becomes one.
• Hello, Insert Name Here: You can call the hero any name you wish, although his last name is always McDohl.
• The Hero: Of Suikoden.
  • Magnetic Hero: By necessity, with 108 potential recruits on offer.
• Heroic Mime: As is typical of RPG heroes. He's Suddenly Voiced later with...
• Kenichi Suzumura: In the Drama CD, where he actually talks.
• Lightning Bruiser: He's quick and also packs a punch, especially if his staff is augmented with rune pieces.
• Meaningful Name: His canon name "Tir", which is (appropriately) after the Norse God of War.
• Old Save Bonus: Becomes recruitable in Suikoden II by way of one of these.
• Self-Made Orphan: After Teo refuses to betray the Empire, father and son are pitted against each other in a Duel to the Death.
• Simple Staff: His weapon of choice: a six foot staff.
• "Well Done, Son" Guy
• Wise Beyond Their Years: He's around 15 – 16 years old.

Gremio

• An Axe to Grind: Wields the Axe of the Oath.
• Back from the Dead: He can be miraculously brought back to life by the powers of Leknaat's Gate Rune and the 108 Stars of Destiny if all other 107 Stars are recruited prior to the final battle in Gregminster.
• Battle Butler: Always refers to the hero as "young master".
• The Champion: To the hero.
• Cruel and Unusual Death: He is killed by the flesh-eating Spores of Agony.
• Heroic Sacrifice: He dies protecting the hero from the Spores.
• Old Retainer: Although he is still young.
• Parental Substitute: To the hero, especially as he lost mother at an early age.
• Reluctant Warrior: He is this, but it's mostly because he is worried about the hero's safety.
• Required Party Member: For the early part of the game. He's pretty insistent about accompanying the hero.
• So Proud of You
• X Marks the Hero: Sports a massive criss-cross scar on his cheek.

Cleo

• Action Girl: She's a soldier, although she doesn't talk about it much.
• Blade on a Stick: Her weapon is a throwing spear
• The Chick: Most overtly in the game's initial Five-Man Band character set-up, including the hero, Gremio, Pahn, Ted and herself.
• Cool Big Sis: To the Hero.
• Nerves of Steel: She really keeps it together in times of crisis.
• Not a Morning Person: She's not a fan of early rising and Pahn mentions the fact during the stay over to Sarady early on in the game.
• Playing with Fire: Her magical element, a gift from Leknaat the Seer.
• Team Mom: Is often the voice of reason and calm amongst the party members.

Pahn

• Anyone Can Die: He can die if he doesn't beat Teo in a one on one duel.
• Badass
• Bare-Fisted Monk: Fight with his bare hands.
• Big Eater: He often complains he's hungry in the early part of the game.
• Bodyguard Betrayal: He informs the Imperials that Ted possess the Soul Eater rune, starting a chain of events that leads the hero to join the Liberation Army. However, he will get himself redeemed later on in the game.
• Defeat Means Friendship: He was defeated by Teo McDohl in hand-to-hand combat and since then has served under him, almost as a live-in servant/bodyguard.
• Gotta Catch Em All: He's pretty tough to recruit: he must be of a sufficiently high experience level to best Teo and therefore become available.
• Grumpy Bear: He's a sour sort.
• Spirited Competitor: He lives for fighting.

Mathiu Silverberg

• And Now for Someone Completely Different: He is used to swap party members in and out of the hero's team.
• Anyone Can Die
• Awesome By Analysis: Has a preternatural ability to work out the best course of action.
• Badass Bookworm: He doesn't fight, but he can make others fight well.
• Badass Pacifist
• Badass Teacher
• Et Tu, Brute?: His death due to Sanchez's betrayal.
• Eyes Always Shut
• Nerves of Steel: Never once loses his cool.
• The Obi-Wan: To the hero.
• Sibling Yin-Yang: He is a strategist who was formerly a pacifistic teacher, who was formerly a master strategist in the Imperial Army; whereas his sister Odessa is a rebellious girl and early on in the game, leads the Liberation Army.
• The Stoic: Even when he is dying, he demands to keep things moving.
• The Strategist: He orchestrates all of the Liberation Army battle plans.

Odessa Silverberg

• Anyone Can Die

• Blow You Away: She has a permanent Wind Rune.
• Brainy Brunette
• I'm Dying, Please Take My MacGuffin: She gives the hero her earrings to take to Mathiu, evidencing her death...

• The Paragon: She uses her folk-hero status to inspire the people around her to rally to the Liberation Army's cause.
• Plucky Girl
• Quickly-Demoted Woman: She joins the party early in the game, and has great stats... unfortunately, she is killed very soon after joining as a Plot Device to allow the Hero to take over the leadership of the Liberation Army.
• Sibling Yin-Yang: Mathiu is a strategist who was formerly a pacifistic teacher, whereas Odessa is a rebellious girl and early on in the game, leads the Liberation Army.
• Spirited Young Lady

Sanchez

• And Now for Someone Completely Different: Shares this role with Mathiu, mainly when you want to switch party members without advancing the plot (which is almost always triggered by talking to Mathiu).
• The Atoner: Following his betrayal, he is pardoned by Lepant and cloistered within Qlon Temple.
• Beware the Nice Ones: It's pretty shocking when it is discovered that mild-mannered and seemingly loyal Sanchez is an Imperial spy who facilitated the deaths of Mathiu and Odessa...
• Bitch in Sheep's Clothing
• Bob From Accounting: He acts as the Liberation Army's financial advisor.
• The Mole: He secretly infiltrates the Liberation Army as an Imperial spy and cruelly betrays Odessa, and then the Hero.

• Cool Sword/I Call It Vera: He named it after Odessa. This and later, as noted in Hix's entry, is a hint at the origins of a number of very dedicated men. Any man in the main series whose weapon is named in pattern of Loved One's Name and a '+' was a man who was raised in the Warrior's Village.

• Jerkass: How bad of a jerkass is he? For the entire first two games (from the very beginning), he has the True Wind Rune, whose overwhelming power can easily beat entire armies. Across those entire two games despite all the hardship and sacrifice and danger the heroes face, he uses it only a single time... because he knows it will piss Sasarai off.

• Malfunction Malady: The above teleport mistakes are accompanied with a little sneeze!
• Mysterious Past: No one really knows where she came from.
• Purity Personified: She's nothing but sweet and loving.
• Teleporter Accident: Her abilities can be hit and miss, occasionally landing the characters in completely random locations.
• Warp Whistle: Her speciality: as bearer of the Blinking Rune, she can transport the hero and his party to any destination previously visited.
• Wide-Eyed Idealist: Despite her clutziness, she's very keen to help out.

Kirkis

• The Archer: Downplayed. Kirkis is skilled archer, but is also emotional, unlike most of his kind.

• Nerds Are Sexy: Especially if you're Sheena.
• Not Good with People: She's pretty grumpy when she finds out the hero has recruited Mathiu.
• Precocious Crush: On her teacher Mathiu, it would seem.
• Smart People Wear Glasses: Pretty straight-forward, she looks quite smart with her large glasses, and she is quite smart to be an effective strategist at such a young age.
• The Strategist: She's Mathiu's pupil and assistant.
• Teen Genius: She was 16 in the original Suikoden and 19 by Suikoden II.

Vincent De Boule

• I Owe You My Life: He was freed during the Liberation Army's rescue attempt on Moravia Castle, and proclaims eternal gratitude, vowing to aid the hero by joining the Liberation Army.

Templeton

• Curious as a Monkey: He dreams of visiting and mapping the whole world.

• Fantasy World Map: His speciality: once recruited, it is possible to view the entire world map.
• Free-Range Children: He's an extreme example: his parents are conspicuously absent.
• Innocent Prodigy: He is a genius surveyor and map-maker and set out mapping the world from the age of just eleven, but can still get a little crabby if he needs to update his maps following wars.

Kwanda Rosman

• An Axe to Grind
• Armor Is Useless: He's pretty easy to defeat despite being encased in armor.

• The Big Guy: Of the 6 great generals.
• Brainwashed and Crazy: When first encountered, he is being controlled with a black rune by the Emperor's evil magician Windy.

• Heel Face Turn: He soon joins the up with the hero to make amends for his actions whilst brainwashed, specifically using his deadly Burning Mirror to destroy the Elf Village.
• Stone Wall: He has the highest defense in the game.
• Top-Heavy Guy: Has this looks, due to his Shoulders of Doom.

• Arms Dealer: Not directly, but he does assist with the transportation of the Fire Spears.
• Intrepid Merchant: He owns a large fleet of ships.

• Heroic Spirit: In defiance and to protect his friend, Ted commands the Soul Eater to take his own soul and it is believed that he ended his life at that moment.

Emperor Barbarossa Rugner

• Anti-Magic: His Sovereign Rune acts as a barrier to all forms of magic deployed against him, including Windy's charm spells.
• Anti-Villain: He's actually a pretty decent guy, even letting Futch leave his gardens without a fight, and he basically comes across as a guy who let everything in his life go to pot because he couldn't handle the death of his wife.
