Tropedia

  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

  • Bury Your Art: Only a few parts of the show have been surfaced due to a request from Machiko Hasegawa stating its "no merchandise" policy.
  • Executive Meddling: Necessary example. Sazae used to end every episode by throwing a bean in the air and swallowing it. When a child choked to death imitating her, this was changed; she now ends every episode by challenging the viewer to jan-ken-pon (rock/paper/scissors).
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: In the first three months of the show's broadcast Katsuo was voiced by Nobuyo Ōyama, best known as the voice of DoraemonDoraemon.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Despite its long run not one episode was ever officially released on VHS or DVD. This was from a request the creator Machiko Hasegawa made before she died. In fact, episodes broadcast before VCRs became the norm are extremely difficult to find because they've never been shown again since its original broadcast. This is partly the reason why the 40th anniversary special from 2009 was a big event: they pulled out some old episodes from the 1970s and broadcast them again for the first time in decades. As of 2017, Fuji Television agreed with Amazon to include select episodes from the 1970s in the service.
  • No Export for You: Despite its popularity in the native country, Sazae-san was never released in the States or in any country outside of Japan. Due to its long running nature, its content could not be liked by people outside of Japan unlike Doraemon or Chibi Maruko-chan, even in North America or Europe. However, there are selects from the manga translated into English, as The Wonderful World of Sazae-san.
  • The Other Darrin: Despite its long run this trope is averted with Sazae, Tara, Namihei, and Fune, whose voices are still performed by the same actors after more than 40 years.[1]. However, there has been changes with voice actors for Katsuo (3 actors), Masuo (2), and Wakame (3). Tarao wasn't replaced until the original voice actress died in 2023, after 54 years voicing the character.
  • Outlived Its Creator: Machiko Hasegawa died in 1992.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Machiko Hasegawa was involved in a court case with the bus company's unapproved usage of Sazae-san characters in bus liveries and merchandise, as well as its name, "Sazae-san Tours". As a result, the Japanese copyright law was updated to extend protection of characters as individual identities, not within their series of origin.
  1. One 2009 episode had someone else perform Fune, only because the voice actress was sick that day.
