- Broken Base: Apart from the undeniable gorgeous art style, the fanbase is very divisive in whether or not Starless is the best game created by Sei Shoujo, given the fact that the game itself takes all the fetishes to the extreme and very limited scenery.
- Counterpart Comparison
- The game is usually compared to Hadaka Shitsuji, a Boys Love/Bara Game that also takes all the possible fetishes to the extreme, but with the protagonist taking the master role instead of servant.
- On a character focus one, Marie is comparable to Tomaru Sawagoe from Overflow universe, a man who engages in pretty much almost every form of debaucheries and crimes, though still possibly lower than Marie. But while Marie does love and care for her children (albeit still twisted), Tomaru has no form of love toward anyone but himself, seeing his family and friends as tools for him to complete his goals.
- Evil Is Sexy: The Mamiyas are all very attractive and popular among the fanbase but are also wicked, rotten, and immoral.
- Franchise Killer: As infamous as the game may be, some of the players saw Starless as a sign of declining in Sei's popularity due to the less engaging storyline and overused sex scenes. The low rating and quality in the OVAs (resulting in no further OVAs being produced from Lewdless onward), the decline of H-game Genre, and the lack of localization news for Empress' other games for almost 6 years until the announcement of English version of Closed Game in 2021 doesn't help in the matter.
- Moral Event Horizon: Every bad ending has the Mamiyas cross it in a way or another, making Yukito and Yuuna's life as much miserable as possible.
- Sequelitis: The game recieved two sequels/spinoffs in form of Great Deceiver and Sleepless: A Midsummer Dream, both are much shorter in length than Starless and have even less complex plot/storyline. Marie's redesign, which makes her looks even younger than her STARLESS's appearance, is met with criticism from fans that prefer her mature original look.
- Woolseyism
- All of Yukito's lines were given adaptational Deadpan Snarker-ism, making most the situations quite humorous.
- The localization team have Yukito addresses Marie as "the Mistress" instead of more traditional "Madame" (a more straight equalvalent of "Oku-sama") to accentuate her authority and power over the estate.
