Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.
Lately they've gotten even lazier and started simply adding "An XXX Parody" on. Examples: Star Trek: The Next Generation An XXX Parody, Married, With Children: An XXX Parody, and so on. What's amazing is that the acting is actually good, there just happens to be rampant XXX activites sandwiched in between a plot...OrSoIHeard.
IN SPACE! is frequently used in horror movies. There have been IN SPACE! versions of Friday the 13 th (Jason X) and Leprechaun (appropriately titled Leprechaun 4: In Space).
Critters eventually went (back) to space too. In fact, almost any horror movie franchise will eventually head to the stars if it lasts long enough. Except for Aliens, which started out in space and ended up back in a normal Earth town for Alien vs. Predator: Requiem.
The concept for Alien itself was apparently sold to the film company as "Jaws - IN SPACE!"
AlienS has also been described as a Vietnam movie IN SPACE!
Zathura is Jumanji IN SPACE! Literally; in the story (by the same author) on which it is based, Zathura is the value-added bonus game on the reverse side of the Jumanji board (in the same way many checkerboards have a backgammon board on the back).
This trope is parodied in the Mel Brooks film History of the World Part I, where one of the previews of Part II involve Jews... IN SPACE! (Not to be confused with the trope Space Jews, which is something else.) Also Adolf Hitler... ON ICE!
The Clone Wars is The American Civil War IN SPACE! Right down to the rebels calling themselves a confederacy and the Republic's army being called the Grand Army of the Republic
Revenger's Tragedy (2003) is The Revenger's Tragedy IN POST-APOCALYPTIC LIVERPOOL! And WITH THE DOCTOR AND THE MASTER AS THE HERO AND VILLAIN, ALTHOUGH THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT AT THE TIME!
Lockout is a movie about a convicted ex-government agent who is offered a pardon if he can save the President's daughter from a prison colony... in space.
Actually, while there are elements of both, there are actually quite a few elements that are far closer to an older film called The Mission. Of particular note is the build up to the final battle complete with a Kill'Em All Ending, not to mention the idea of a soldier changing sides (while not given as much focus Trudy's role is somewhat similar to that of Robert De Niro's Captain Mendoza, granted she doesn't start off as a slave driver but she is still a soldier who ends up turning against her own people), and there is mention of a school that was established by Grace Augustine. (essentially a mission of sorts). In fact, even the basic set-up is the same- a group of people are sent to live among an indigenous population to gain their trust for the benefit of their superiors, only here the role of the Church is replaced by a Corrupt Corporate Executive.
District 9 is the story of apartheid-era District 6 in Johannesburg ...WITH ALIENS! Alternatively: "Watermelon Man... WITH TENTACLES!" or "The Metamorphosis... WITH EXPLOSIONS!"
