Series: Star Trek: The Original Series

Series: Star Trek: The Original Series
Episode: Season 1, Episode 15
Title: Shore Leave
Previous: Balance of Terror
Next: The Galileo Seven

The overworked crew of the Enterprise has arrived in orbit of a seemingly utopian and uninhabited planet for some much needed shore leave. When a landing party beams down however, they find the uninhabited planet is home to all manner of bizarre creatures and objects seemingly ripped from the pages of story and history books.

Tropes:[]

  • A Lady on Each Arm: McCoy at the end.
  • Absentee Actor: Where's Scotty?
  • Amusement Park of Doom: Not intentionally. But the Enterprise crew is not advanced enough to comprehend the wonders of the park or its properties.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Angela look familiar? She should. She was the bride last episode. Her fiancee died just before the wedding and she's already cuddling up to someone else.
  • Clothing Damage:
    • Barrows' tunic is damaged after being stabbed by Don Juan.
    • Kirk's shirt is ripped in his fight with Finnegan.
  • Eureka Moment: After Kirk claims it was satisfying to defeat Finnegan, Spock realizes the illusions are all tailored to meet one's desires.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Woman!: Kirk has to snap Yeoman Barrows out of openly sobbing over McCoy's death.
  • Ho Yay: For some reason, Kirk thought Spock was giving him a back massage instead of Yeoman Barrows. The fangirls really got an itch to scratch.
  • I Resemble That Remark: Spock reports a crewman whose performance levels have dropped below acceptable parameters and who's becoming increasingly irritable and in need of rest. Kirk orders the crewman sent on shore leave only to learn that crewman is him.
  • It's All My Fault: Barrows breaks down in tears after McCoy is stabbed by the Black Knight's lance.
  • Large Ham: Finnegan manages to outshine Kirk.
  • Likes Older Men: The seemingly late 20s/early 30s Barrows seems rather taken with wrinkly McCoy. They even get married in the EU.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Barrows. While we don't get to she her strip, there is a memorable scene where she tosses clothing upon a convenient branch while changing into her princess get-up.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Well not a scene but your average fan is more likely to remember Barrows in a princess outfit than anything else about this episode.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Barrows' princess get-up isn't exactly slim and form fitting.
  • Princess Classic: Barrows gets to dress up as one and seriously loves every moment. Progressive 23rd century at work here folks.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: It's hard not to draw comparisons between Yeoman Barrows and Yeoman Rand.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Sulu finds a style of antique pistol he'd always wanted on a planet that should be uninhabited and his first impulse is to take it and play with it rather than doing the sensible thing of reporting it to Kirk. Kirk is highly unamused when Sulu reports this.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Whatever one wishes for appears. Unfortunately it's very much a case of Exact Words as even a stray thought can conjure up very real danger. And said danger is capable of inflicting mortal wounds.
