Owarimonogatari

Owarimonogatari ("Ending Story") is the twelfth installment of the Monogatari Series. It is comprised of three books. The first volume details more about protagonist Koyomi Araragi's past, and how he came to be the loner he was before meeting Hanekawa in Kizumonogatari. The second volume expands on Shinobu's past as told in Onimonogatari, in particular about her first vampire servant. These two volumes also builds on the enigmatic Oshino Ougi, officially "introducing" her to the series universe. The third volume is the climax of the overall main story, answering and tying up all the build-ups from the previous books.

The stories contained are Ougi Formula, Sodachi Riddle, Sodachi Lost, Shinobu Mail, Mayoi Hell, Hitagi Rendezvous and Ougi Dark.

An anime adaptation was handled by Studio SHAFT as usual, aired in October 2015 for the Fall 2015 Anime Season. The adaptation only consist of the first two volumes, whereas the final volume was later adapted as an online broadcast titled "Owarimonogatari 2nd Season" in August 2017 for the Summer 2017 season.

In the novels release order, it is following Koyomimonogatari and is followed by Zokuowarimonogatari.

Tropes used in Owarimonogatari include:

• Arc Words: "Oshino Ougi is Oshino Ougi" appears constantly in the first three arcs.
• Animation Bump: The first half of Episode 10 is practically movie-quality.
• Back From the Dead: Araragi at the end of Mayoi Hell, after getting murdered by Gaen at the end of Koyomimonogatari.
• Big Damn Heroes: Yotsugi saved Araragi and Kanbaru from the burning building.
• Blatant Lies: Oshino Izuko, huh? Even Koyomi himself lampshades this.
• Bottle Episode: Ougi Formula only stars Araragi and Ougi (with a bit of Kanbaru and flashback characters), and mainly happen in a single room. The budget on the other hand...
• Cryptic Conversation: The bit regarding the Oddity Slayer told by Ougi near the very end.
• Dramatic Wind: Used constantly in Shinobu Mail.
• Foreshadowing: A very brief scene from the part where Araragi and Ougi visited Araragi's middle school shows Ougi standing in front of Nadeko's shoe locker, grinning. Note that the first three Araragi-centric arcs happen right before Nadeko Medusa...
• Forgotten Childhood Friend: Araragi just couldn't recall memories of Oikura from his childhood.
• Fridge Horror: Utilized in-universe by Ougi and Hanekawa during the climax of Sodachi Lost. The two only tell Araragi the circumstances of Oikura's mother through small hints, which he needs to piece together until everything becomes clear.
• Good with Numbers: Araragi and Oikura. The two are the top students in math back then.
• Ironic Hell: Takes form of the city where he lives, in Araragi's case, except that it's empty and has certain events that's important to his life playing in front of him.
• Locked in a Room: Araragi and Ougi are "stuck" in a mysterious classroom in Ougi Formula.
• Mood Whiplash: The final scene of Episode 9. So, Araragi went to the bookstore to buy Kanbaru's BL novel; he sought for "salvation" from his lolicon attitude buy buying adult magazines, tried to hide the BL novels, and gotten laughed at by the employees in a comedic fashion... Then he bumped into Seishirou.
• Ms. Exposition: Gaen details the backstory of the samurai armor that attacked Araragi and Kanbaru in the span of 1.25 episodes, no less.
• Not Quite Dead: It turns out, Tadatsuru Teori is still "alive" and well, as his power enables him to transcend between Heaven and Hell whenever he liked and the one that got killed in Tsukimonogatari was just a puppet he made.
• Remember the New Guy?: Sodachi Oikura. Although since Araragi himself forgot all about her in his past, and the audience are always treated with explanations from Araragi's point of view, this is pretty justified.
• The Scapegoat: Poor, poor Oikura.
• Twelve-Episode Anime: The first two books are adapted into this. The third volume, Gekkan, is going to be adapted separately in 2017.
• Spanner in the Works: Ougi once again tries to screw the plot by manipulating certain characters to act a certain way. This time though, she failed.
• Talking Heads: The series are already known for this, but it takes guts to do a one-hour special that consists mostly of this... And yet, they can still make it interesting and meaty as per Monogatari standard.:
