Now, as I was saying. Even before I was born, I was the most beautiful and charming of embryos. And then, once I was born, I discovered the wonderful world of sexual deviancy, between and within the many genders I have come across. So, I diversified. And after I had worn out even the French, I came to Japan, or maybe Britain, and set up this club where we entertain even the strangest fetishes: asphyxiophilia, catheterrophilia, infantilism (you can guess who's into that), kleptophilia, morphophilia, necrophilia (no comment), somnophilia, stigmatophilia, urophilia (don't ask), and zoophilia. We've had them all. What would you like to try?

Ouran High School Host Club's abridged series by manitoug15 and jellibette. Thanks to one of their fans, the series can be found here. A parody song summing up the entire series can be found here.

The abridged series was inspired by Little Kuriboh (who is mentioned as the abbreviation 'LK' in Episode 17 by Haruhi) and Megami33 (whose FAQ showed them a way to record their audio better). The idea was thought up by manitoug15, who put the idea to jellibette, who said they should go for it. When trying to allocate voices they realized that it would be easiest if they could do all the voices of the main cast between them. Their casting and reasons were as follows:

  • Tamaki - manitoug15 - favourite character, and she was much more willing to say perverted things.
  • Kyouya - jellibette - favourite character, and better at keeping her voice level.
  • Haruhi - jellibette - has a lower and more cynical voice.
  • Hikaru/Kaoru - jellibette/manitoug15 - toss up.
  • Honey - manitoug15 - was able to go much higher with her voice.
  • Mori - jellibette - has the better grunt.
  • Renge - manitoug15 - one of the few people in the world who actually likes Renge and presents much more demanding, fanatic, otaku-like behaviour (esp in relation to Ouran)
  • Narrator - manitoug15 - convenience, manitoug15 edits the series alone and so, due to computer difficulties or incomplete scenes, she sometimes puts in a narration (once as Renge) to smooth it over. She has also been known to put in scenes she scripted (Ep 1 - Hescafe, Ep 12 - Fufflebunnies) and take out scenes (usually for time constraints or bad dialogue).

The writers have been criticized a number of times for their unnatural-sounding male voices due to the fact that they use a pitch change on all their male characters. This was due to the fact that neither one could get low enough to put off a convincing male voice. Tamaki's voice has often been likened to Tom Kane's Him from The Powerpuff Girls, which was not the intention, and manitoug15 feels bad that she is dragging Tom Kane through the mud for this voice. Kyouya has actually had several more lines than he has spoken, but due to the fact that jellibette often talks very quietly when recording (it helps with the monotone) manitoug15 has had to cut quite a lot of his dialogue.

Since the series has evolved from being created in Windows Movie Maker (a most despicable program) to Final Cut Express 4 (which is a thousand times better, but not the best) visual humor has become more fluid though editing has become slower- because now that manitoug15 has the ability to add loads of sound effects and music, she does.

Another huge criticism of the series is that posting new episodes is slow. This is due to the fact that when the writers started this project they saw each other regularly due to their living arrangements, however, since October 2009 manitoug15 has started university (luckily and coincidentally the same one as jellibette) and both find it difficult to take time out to see each other. They have tried to script watching a simultaneous video but it felt wrong, and recording the twins (as they speak in unison a lot) was only possible in person.

Oh, and FYI, every last word between the link to the series and this very sentence is from God herself. You got all that?

Even though the series covered all 26 episodes by November 2010, manitoug15 announced that she will release additional projects related to Ouran...then the suspension of her You Tube video put a damper on those plans. If manitoug15 ever gets permission to resume this series, she will post the videos on a new channel, "The Fabulicious Tea."

Tropes used in Ouran the Vaguely Abridged Series include:

  • Abridged Series
  • All Just a Dream: Tamaki's way of pushing the Alice in Wonderland Homage into Canon Dis Continuity.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: To provide juxtaposition from the flamboyant Hosts, Nekozawa has changed in-universe from a Perky Goth to a Russian Scientologist.
  • Artifact Title: The series was originally considered "vaguely abridged" because the first two episodes exceeded YouTube's ten minute limit. The later episodes stayed within the limit, but the "vaguely" in the title remains.
    • The title became appropriate again after the second-to-last episode took two parts, and the very last episode took more than 10 minutes.
  • Author Avatar: Renge has received "writer powers" since manitoug15 voices her.
    • More recently, manitoug15 has used clips of Renge for her update and announcement videos, one of which is actually titled, "Another Update From My Author Avatar!"
  • Berserk Button: "For the love of all that is holy, do NOT call Kyouya a homo side character." Bad things will happen.
    • According to part three of the finale, jellibette can't stand people calling Kyouya a "homo side character" either.
      • Or maybe she was just stopping her for fear of what Kyouya would do should she have finished the sentence.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: In addition to carrying over martial arts skills from the original series, Honey killed Shiro with a piano.
  • Book Ends: The first sign to appear during the last episode reads, "The Host Club is now open. Welcome." The episode ends with a sign reading, "The Host Club is now closed. Go away."
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall
  • Catch Phrase: Tamaki's "Fabulicious!"
  • Chirping Crickets
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Tamaki
  • Comedic Sociopathy
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: As the twins fight for the affections of Haruhi ("the manliest Host here"), Kaoru threatens to turn Hikaru straight by writing his name on one of Nekozawa's wooden cats. After Haruhi demands they stop fighting, Kaoru writes her name on the cat instead.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: As mentioned above, all the hosts are voiced by females.
  • Curse Cut Short: Episode 22 ends with Kasanoda exclaiming, "What the fu-"
  • Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon: As punishment for making Kyouya the caterpillar in the Alice in Wonderland-themed episode, Renge is forbidden to use her "writer powers" for the next three episodes, lest she endure "four Endless Eight parody episodes."
  • Eleventy-Zillion: Haruhi's debt? Eight million jillion quadrillion malalalalilion shoo-ba-da-da-do-bop-bop-ian! Also note that value doesn't have a specific currency attached to it.
  • Fast-Forward Gag: Several occur in the episode about Honey's rivalry with Chika, but only Haruhi seems to notice.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: Haruhi sees her stay in the Host Club as one; she once encouraged a man to push her off a cliff.
    • According to episode 21, hearing the English dub of "Sakura Kiss".
    • The Hosts spend part three of the finale trying to prevent Tamaki from having Ouran renewed for a second season, which they seem to consider a literal Fate Worse Than Death.
  • Filler: According to Kyouya, only three episodes of Ouran: Vaguely Abridged relate to the plot: the Pilot and both parts of the finale. With this observation, the Hosts will have endured 23 episodes of filler by the time the series ends.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today?
  • The Hedonist: Tamaki. Just see the page quote.
  • Hilarious Outtakes: For episodes 8-11, 16, and 18-24.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: Renge has inexplicably become the victim of several fat jokes.
  • Jerkass Woobie: During the finale, Haruhi starts perceiving Tamaki as one in-universe after hearing his backstory. Then she hates him again after he announces there will be a second season.
  • Lampshade Hanging
  • Larynx Dissonance
  • Mandatory Line: Karou and Hikaru express joy at the end of their backstory episode that Haruhi did not appear, but their joy gets interrupted by Haruhi asking What Could Possibly Go Wrong? during her stay at Ouran.
  • Mistaken for Gay: After Haruhi completely missed the point of Arai's attempt to ask her out, and Arai caught Haruhi hanging out with the Hosts later, Arai started believing Haruhi is a lesbian.
    • Episode 20 also revealed that Tamaki initially thought Kaoru and Hikaru enjoyed Twincest, but they were perfectly straight until Tamaki taught them how to act gay for his Host Club.
  • Moment Killer: Tamaki interrupts Kyoya and Haruhi having sex.
  • Mushroom Samba: Haruhi has one after Hikaru makes her eat a lunch that Kaoru drugged.
  • My Name Is Not Durwood: The Hosts call Kasanoda, "Shrek," after they decide his real name sounds too long.
  • Overly Long Name: Renge Houshamafulamakalabajabaexpealidocious
  • Phlebotinum-Induced Stupidity: One of the Ouran fangirls has her brain taken away by the writers as punishment for becoming Genre Savvy.
  • Put on a Bus: Renge spends episodes 14-16 at fat camp.
  • Pygmalion Snapback: Nekozawa performs one less than a minute after the Hosts turn him gay.
  • Record Needle Scratch
  • Re Cut: The Pilot was remade in June 2010 with clearer audio, updated jokes and performances, and a shorter runtime.
  • Shout-Out
  • Stealth Pun: From the last part of the finale:

Twins: It was just a bridge! Why did you take so long?

Kyouya: Well, it was a good bridge.

Tamaki: Hmmm, Hescafe...It's brown...H...Oh, my God. This...is... {beat} heroin coffee!

Haruhi: What, you psycho? It's just normal coffee! Fine, I'll take it back. I'll take it back.

Tamaki: No, no! I will try this.

(fangirls gasp)

Tamaki: I will brave...the heroin...coffee!

  • To the Bat Noun: Complete with infamous Batman score.
    • Tamaki exclaims, "To the Batcave!" right before he and the hosts teleport to save Haruhi from Lobelia Lesbelia.
    • A special video created in between parts two and three of the finale ends with manitoug15/Renge exclaiming, "To the recording studio!" which jellibette/Haruhi points out is just a microphone on a desk.
  • Viewers are Morons: People started praising/lamenting the end of Ouran: The Vaguely Abridged Series before manitoug15 and jellibette reached episode 26. A video released after episode 25 showed that Renge was not happy with these comments, especially after Haruhi rose the possibility those viewers haven't even seen Ouran High School Host Club, but became giddy after Haruhi informed Renge that they could enjoy the surprises awaiting them when the real finale comes.
  • Villainous Crossdresser: Haruhi and Ranka become some in the episode where the Hosts visit their apartment.
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: The setting is referred to "Japan or MaybeBritain."
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: At least twice, Haruhi has reveled in the joy of having the opportunity to avoid the Hosts during holidays and weekends, only to find the Hosts visiting her anyway.
    • Also, in the second part of the finale, Tamaki crushes everyone's excitement for the series' end by proposing a second season.
