Tropedia

  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here, provided you don't die when you are killed:

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Land of Oz fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in the 'fic, based on who recommended it. No-name recommendations will be Zapped. Nobody would back up the rec. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be. You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into homosexual or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Authors, and Websites

Gregory Maguire: renowned revisionist author and writer of the Wicked novels, which is essentially long, dark, and well written fan fiction that got published. His books are worth a good look.

The Royal Timeline of Oz

  • Recommended by Roo
  • Synopsis: The Royal Timeline is primarily a list of published Oz material, by the official authors and others, put into chronological order, but also includes links to a handful of online stories (mostly short stories, but there are a couple of longer ones as well) written by fans to fill in plot holes or explore parts of cannon hitherto left in the dark. All these stories are Original Flavor and designed to fit as painlessly into the canon as possible.
  • Comments: Not all the online stories are equally good, but there's a certain charm to most of them, and quite a few of the solutions for patching up plot holes are pretty creative. Of special interest are David Hulan's two novel-length stories, Eureka in Oz and The Magic Carpet of Oz, both available as illustrated PDF books and detailing a few untold stories (such as how Eureka became pink and came to stay in Oz, how the Glass Cat got her pink brains back, and how Ozma got her own magic powers), and Paul Dana's novel-length stories Time Travelers in Oz and The Lost Boy of Oz, the first of which has Button-Bright and Ojo the Lucky travel back in time to the days when Oz was made a fairy country, and the second chronicling Button-Bright's subsequent quest to discover his own mysterious past.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Wizard of Oz 3: Dorothy Goes to Hell, by James Rolfe.

  • Recommended by User:Master Hand
  • Synopsis: A hilariously bizarre animated Fan Sequel to the films that picks up after the events of Return to Oz. Dorothy is back on the farm in Kansas with her aunt and uncle ("Uncle Crunch" and "Auntie Eminem" in this version) when a sandcrawler appears and sells Tick Tock and the Tin Man to the family as workers. But Tick Tock is carrying a message from Glinda, stating that Oz has been taken over by Satan, who plans to escape to Kansas and destroy the world on January 1st, 2000 using an evil cyborg version of Jesus. It just gets weirder from there, featuring random cameos, nonsensical characters, Surreal Humour, and Big Lipped Alligator Moments around every turn.
  • Tags: Crack Fic, potentially NSFW due to language (this is the person who brought us The Angry Video Game Nerd, after all) and an anatomically-correct drunk Munchkin.

The Magic Book of Oz by Scott Dickerson

  • Recommended by Roo
  • Synopsis: Glinda's newest handmaiden, Notmarie, accidentally alters part of the Great Book of Records, and in so doing alters reality and history at the same time, so that the Wizard never came to Oz. Now she finds herself in a different Oz, where Wicked Witches still rule, the Emerald City doesn't exist, nobody's heard of Ozma, and people still grow old and die. Together with an elderly Dorothy (who still crashed on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, but had no way to return to Kansas and so stayed in Munchkinland and grew old) and a still-brainless Scarecrow (who never got his brains), as well as a few other colorful personages, she now has to try and set things right and bring Oz back to its normal self.
  • Comments: It's a well-written, entertaining and occasionally hilarious story, very much in the style of L. Frank Baum. We get to see the origin of Oz, and how the Fairy Queen Lurline originally enchanted the land, as well as a thought-out history of the alternate Oz that comes about from Notmarie's accidental rewriting of reality. Many of the familiar characters make appearances, in altered forms -- perhaps the biggest surprise is what became of the Cowardly Lion in this version of Oz -- and the original characters are fun.

Shipping Fics

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

For You by Bitterfig

  • Recommended by User:Andyzero
  • Pairings: Dorothy/Ozma (It's the gay! Run! ...ahem, I mean, Les Yay content.)
  • Synopsis: Nobody in Oz ages...unless they want to.
  • Comments: It starts to get lemony near the end, but nothing too detailed.

Princess Tippetarius by Bitterfig

  • Recommended by User:Andyzero
  • Pairings: Dorothy/Ozma (Les Yay)
  • Synopsis: Tip hasn't disappeared entirely.
  • Comments: No Gender Bending involved, but some exploration on how Ozma used to be different.
