Tropedia

  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

  • Award Snub: Both films were completely ignored come Oscar season. Of course, they weren't "Oscar material", but Thurman and Carradine should have at least been nominated for acting.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: O-Ren's white robes and The Bride's Bruce Lee-inspired striped suit.
    • The kimono isn't so anachronistic; lots of women in Japan still wear them, although perhaps not such a very formal one.
  • Awesome Music: Let's just go ahead and mark down the entire soundtrack as a whole. Every bit of music, every song... It all fit everything so well.
  • Better on DVD: There are so many small details that can only be caught after several viewings.
  • Complete Monster: Buck ("I came here to fuck") and Boss Matsumoto. Strangely enough, Bill himself, despite being depicted as the most vicious, murdering bastard in the world, is NOT this.
    • Pai Mei, on the other hand, qualifies. He reacts to the slightest offense, real or imaginary, by plucking out the offender's eye. He slaughtered an entire monastery because they begged forgiveness for one of their own after he (the monk) didn't acknowledge a nod that Pai Mei gave him, and because the monks didn't want to behead him in "apology" to Pai Mei. Couple Complete Monster with Jerkass.
    • Elle DEFINITELY.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The Crazy 88 fight.
    • A guy gets his foot sliced off; seconds later he's seen pressing it back to the bloody stump, as if it's going to magically reattach. Another guy gets his eye snatched out (in a bit of Foreshadowing concerning where she learned this from); when The Bride is overlooking the carnage, he's still stumbling around blindly (and rumored to be a cameo by Tarantino). The uncensored fight shows the Bride taking said eye and throwing it down another man's throat.
  • Ear Worm: "Twisted Nerve", "Battle Without Honor Or Humanity," and the Green Hornet theme.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Gogo Yubari again. It doesn't matter if she's a hypercompetent Blood Knight-ly assassin, you might as well have felt sorry for her when she was killed.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Bill's line about shooting the Bride being him at his most masochistic, considering how David Carradine died.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Lucy Liu aka O-Ren Ishii would later go on to provide voiceovers in Kung Fu Panda, where her character was proficient in kung fu and viper; which in China is known as a Bai-Bu-She or "Hundred-Step-Snake" (the amount of time it takes the venom to kill you), or more colloquially in the west as a "Cottonmouth."
  • Holy Shit Quotient: Unfathomably high.
  • It Was His Sled: Just about everything except The Bride's real name.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Bill.
  • Memetic Outfit: The Bride's famous jumpsuit, itself a reference to a similar outfit worn by Bruce Lee.
  • Older Than They Think: Lots of references to really obscure movies most viewers have likely never heard of. It's not just shots though; the "My name is Buck..." line is from Tobe Hooper's Eaten Alive and it's probably not the only dialogue Tarantino lifted.
  • So Cool Its Awesome
  • Squick: Elle's eye smashed under The Bride's foot. The Pussy Wagon (how did Buck pay for it?).
  • Tear Jerker: Four simple words that speak more about Bill's character than any of the badass build-up to him: "I was very sad."
    • Also, O-Ren's Backstory.
    • And then, there's The Bride finding out that her daughter is still alive — when she enters Bill's house, ready to kill him... and then she sees B.B happily shouting "Freeze, Mommy!", since she and Bill had been playing right until The Bride showed up. The Bride's absolutely shocked face says all.
