A spinoff from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which makes the "Generation 4" of the My Little Pony franchise, alongside Friendship Is Magic and Pony Life.

It all starts when a Pony called Sunset Shimmer steals the Crown of Magic, escaping through a mirror. Twilight Sparkle soon follows...

...into Earth.

Transformed into a human by the Shifting Field covering the Mirror Portal, Twilight has only one way to recover the crown: befriend the human versions of Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Rainbow Dash.

At the climax, the Crown of Magic (for some reason) turns Sunset Shimmer into a demon. However, this events awakens the Element of Honesty within Human Applejack, the Element of Generosity within Human Rarity, the Element of Kindness within Human Rainbow Dash, the Element of Laughter within Human Pinkie Pie, and the Element of Loyalty within Human Rainbow Dash. Combined with the Element of Magic within Pony Twilight, they form the Rainbow of Harmony, which not only turns Sunset normal, but it also purifies her of all her evil. Now rendered kind and gentle, she begs for forgiveness...and she receives it, becoming friends with the Human Five.

And THAT is when the story truly begins.

The franchise shows Sunset Shimmer, having permanently turned human by the Shifting Field, as she becomes a close friend of the Human Five. She eventually wins the friendship of the entire school and unlocks the seventh Element of Harmony within her, the Element of Empathy.

After that, a Twilight Sparkle native to Earth (nicknamed "Sci-Twi" by fans) appears. At first, she herself turns into a demon due to her desire to understand magic (and her desire to lash out at the abusive treatment she suffered at the hands of her schoolmates and the principal of her school, Crystal Prep), but she herself is purified by the Rainbow of Harmony. She eventually unlocks the Element of Magic within her, and the Human Seven find Geodes that not only act as conduits to their Elements (much like the Trinkets acts as conduits to the Elements within the Equestrian Mane Six), but also give them additional superpowers.

Much like Friendship Is Magic, Equestria Girls has officially ended, as part of Hasbro's plan to make away for Generation 5 of My Little Pony.

Tropes used in Equestria Girls include:
  • Alternate Self
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon never bully anyone.
    • Camp Everfree is a mundane and peaceful summer camp, as opposed to the "dark and scary" Everfree Forest
    • Human Luna is fully heroic and never became Nightmare Moon.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Human Filty Rich is the secondary villain of Legend of Everfree.
    • As noted in the synopsis, Human Twilight eventually becomes a demon called Midnight Sparkle (and she is eventualy turned back to normal), something that never happened to Pony Twilight.
    • Crystal Prep is full of bullying students and an emotionally-abusive principal, as opposed to the peaceful and prosperous Crystal Empire.
  • Another Dimension: Equestria is this to Earth.
  • Barrier Warrior: The Geode of Generosity gives this to Human Rarity.
  • Battle of the Bands: Rainbow Rocks.
  • Decomposite Character:
    • While Earth has a Luna and a Celestia, it's Human Twilight who becomes Midnight Sparkle, Earth's equivalent of Nightmare Moon, with Sunset Shimmer becoming increasingly Celestia-like in her confrontation of Midnight Sparkle.
    • While Earth has a Twilight, and the Pony Twilight is a semi-recurring character, most of the things Pony Twilight is known for (her role as leader of the Human Seven, her Adorkable moments, her tendency to act without thinking and letting her emotions get the better of her) go to Sunset Shimmer.
  • Enthralling Siren: The main villains of Rainbow Rocks.
  • Groundhog Day Loop: Sunset's Backstage Pass
  • Heel-Face Turn: Most villains, with Principal Cinch and the Sirens being the only notable exceptions.
  • Human-Focused Adaptation
  • Humanity Ensues: Sunset Shimmer. Pony Twilight Sparkle as well, whenever she visits Earth.
  • Merchandise-Driven
  • Mind Over Matter: The Geode of Magic gives Human Twilight telekinesis, and the Geode of Empathy gives Sunset Shimmer telepathy.
  • No Antagonist: Spring Breakdown is the only movie with this trope.
  • The Phantom of the Masquerade: Provides the trope image. Starlight Glimmer, upon entering Earth, is confused and astonished at becoming human, and she's not subtle about it. Combined with her rather poor attempts at acting human, she ends up posing a threat to the Masquerade.
  • The Power of Rock: Rainbow Rocks.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal/The Beast Master: The Geode of Kindness gives this to Human Fluttershy.
  • Super Speed: The Geode of Loyalty gives this to Human Rainbow Dash.
  • Super Strength: The Geode of Honesty gives this to Human Applejack.
  • One-Winged Angel: Most villains go through this, the notable exception being Wallflower Blush and Post-Crush.
