Waitress: You can't have egg, bacon, spam and sausage without the spam.

Wife: Why not!?

Waitress: Bleagh, it wouldn't be egg, bacon, spam and sausage, would it?

Wife: I DON'T LIKE SPAM!

Husband: Don't cause a fuss, dear; I'll have your spam, I love it! I'm having spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, and spam!
Cquote2

When a food is said to be loathed by someone, sometimes to the point of characterization. Basically, the exact opposite of the Trademark Favourite Food.

Not to be confused with I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham, or Does Not Like Men, for that matter. (Unless you eat human women instead... Get your mind out of the gutter!) Also has nothing to do with junk e-mail (which many of us quite justifiably despise) [1].

Sometimes these will fall under Stock Yuck, turned Up to Eleven for one person. Otherwise, expect something either so universally loved that no-one understands their problem, or so rarely encountered that you wonder how they manage to build up such a hatred of it.

Sometimes, an Extreme Omnivore will have just that one item they don't like, and this trope will be played for laughs. In this case, it's usually something very mundane, so that while a character might be willing to eat disgusting and probably poisonous mixtures, they absolutely refuse to eat something everyone else enjoys.

(Ironically, although Spam is an acquired taste for most people, it's not actually that horrible, and it's very popular in much of the Pacific, particularly Hawaii and South Korea.)

See also Picky Eater.

Examples of Does Not Like Spam include:

Anime and Manga[]

  • Edward from Fullmetal Alchemist really, really hates milk.
  • Kyo from Fruits Basket hates leeks, onions and miso (all things that cats cannot eat). When he makes leek porridge for an ill Tohru, he actually puts on an anti-gas mask and plastic gloves to handle it.
  • Tenchi Muyo!: Tenchi apparently hates miso soup. At least in the third movie.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory: Kou Uraki and carrots. And it gets dialled Up to Eleven in Super Robot Wars.
  • BT from .hack//Sign named her character based on the removal of this from her favorite food. I'll give you a hint. It's not Bacon and it's not Tomatoes.
    • Mimiru points out it has no taste upon being informed of this which leaves her bewildered as to why BT dislikes it.
  • Sailor Moon: Each of the Sailor Senshi have a least favorite food listed in their profile. Usagi's is, ironically, carrots.
  • Crayon Shin-chan: Shin-chan hates green peppers. Possibly the reason why he always asks older girls if they like them is to allow him to keep hitting on them.
  • Similar to Sailor Moon, most of the cast of Naruto has a food they dislike, with the exception of Lee, who cannot dislike any kind of food. Naruto in particular hates vegetables, and a brief flashback shows Kakashi appearing in his window to offer him some vegetables with his ramen.
  • The captains and lieutenants of Bleach have their favorite foods listed in their profiles, along with foods they dislike. Gin likes persimmons and dislikes dried potatoes (because he bit into one thinking it was a persimmon), while interestingly enough, his lieutenant Izuru dislikes persimmons. Komamura, an anthropomorphic wolf, has hated carrots ever since his father told him that they don't eat them.
  • Vivio initially dislikes green peppers in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. According to Sound Stage M3, though, she got over it by the end of it.
  • Kanako Urashima in Love Hina doesn't like sweets at all. Naturally, she was adopted into a family of confectioners, and she crushes on her adopted brother, who is an expert even amongst the family at them.
  • Akisame Koetsuji of Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple loathes bell peppers to the point that they're occasionally used as a threat for dinner if he doesn't do something or other. He always complies.
  • Pokémon: Misty loathes carrots and peppers as much as she hates bug Pokemon.

Fan Works[]

  • In the Fire Emblem: Three Houses fic, "Tea is for Teacher", Byleth absolutely hates tea to the point where it's the first line of the fic. Claude knew all along, but chose not to let on that he did until the last chapter.

Film[]

  • Bad guy Professor Hathaway in Real Genius doesn't like popcorn. Guess what they use to destroy his house.
  • A Christmas Story: "Meat loaf, meat loaf, double beat loaf. I hate meat loaf."
  • Spock does not like Italian Food, according to Star Trek IV the Voyage Home, but gets convinced by Kirk pretty quickly.
  • Tallahassee, from Zombieland, can't stand coconut. It's not the taste, you understand... it's the texture.
  • In How to Train Your Dragon, dragons hate eel. To the point where Hiccup intimidates dragons by having an eel under his shirt.

Literature[]

  • In Mark Twain's short story The Stolen White Elephant, the titular pachyderm eats anything except European butter, and drinks anything except European coffee.
  • Susan in Discworld: nougat.
    • King Verence detests custard, after having it dumped on him many a time during his youth in the Jesters' Guild.
      • He detests it so much that there's a national ban on custard in Lancre.
    • Makepeace Thomas Bounder, "The Poet of the Cabbages" in The Discworld Almanack, wrote a treatise on "The Hellish Root," aka the potato, believing its popularity to be directly responsible for people being uninterested in cabbages.
  • Rhiow in Diane Duane's Feline Wizards series: tuna.
  • Tita in Like Water for Chocolate can eat just about anything except soft-boiled eggs.
  • In one of the short stories in Marcovaldo by Italo Calvino, Marcovaldo develops an absolute loathing for sausage after eating it every day for weeks.
  • Dr. Seuss's "Green Eggs and Ham"--The protagonist spends most of the book declaring how much he dislikes it, though by the end he is persuaded to try it and discovers that it's actually quite good.
  • Pumuckl, the kobold protagonist of a German children's series hates cheese (which he calls "foul milk").
  • Harry Potter: Dumbledore, despite his general fondness for sweets, avoids Berty Bott's Every-Flavor-Beans after coming across a vomit-flavored one in his youth. He tries them again at the end of the first book, and...
Cquote1

"But I think I'll be safe with a nice toffee, don't you?" (eats bean) "Alas. Earwax."

Live Action TV[]

  • The famous Monty Python's Flying Circus "spam" sketch: "I Don't! Like! Spam!". The Trope Namer.
  • Newman on Seinfeld hates broccoli, calling it a "vile weed." Of course, it seems he probably hates all vegetables.
  • In the American version of Big Brother, seasons 7 and beyond introduced the diet called Slop. The food is a mushy food that contains a lot of vitamins and proteins, and the contestants regularly express their dislike for being "Stuck on slop" and compete as hard as they can to not be the side that is forced to eat nothing but slop for a week. It is actually designed that way on purpose...as the Peanut Butter and Jelly diet would make people sleep all the time...the Slop would have people awake for more drama and encourage people to play harder during the food competitions.
  • Red Dwarf Dave: Lister hates Pot Noodles to the point of eating dog food instead when they're his only options. When stuck on a version of the ship that's supposedly the "higher" version, he orders a Pot Noodle to see if it can make them any good. It does, and he's amazed.
  • Sarah Jane Smith of Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures hates ginger pop. It's how the Doctor recognizes her ginger pop-drinking android impostor in "The Android Invasion.
    • The Seventh Doctor loathed pears. The Eleventh turns out, after much experimentation, to hate apples, yogurt, baked beans, bacon, and bread and butter. To be fair, he had just regenerated.
      • There's a clip that was was cut out of "Human Nature" that says that the Tenth also disliked pears, because it became apparent that impressionable children who imitate the Doctor might be put off pears.
  • Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern: Andrew will cheerfully eat almost anything: bloody entrails, duck eggs with a fetus inside, pig brains preserved in aspic, etc. But in an episode about Hawaii, he was presented with a dish made of spam and could barely force himself to taste it. He even went on for about five minutes about how much he hates spam. He also has a strong aversion to durian.
    • He also does not like walnuts.
    • When Zimmern guest starred on the Minneapolis episode of Man vs. Food, he had host Adam Richman (who makes his living eating enormous amounts of fatty, sugary, and/or unearthily spicy foods) try some lutefisk. He couldn't stomach more than one bite.
Cquote1

Andrew Zimmern: Mmmm. That's some good lutefisk

Adam Richman: (face contorted in disgust) How can you tell?

Cquote2
  • Anya from Buffy the Vampire Slayer explaining alternative universes, bearing in mind that her example is bound to be self-centered: "Suppose you don't like shrimp. Well, blahh, you say, I wish there was a world without shrimp." This is in addition to bunnies of course.
  • Yuto from Kamen Rider Den-O hates shiitake mushrooms.
  • Iron Chef play-by-play announcer Kenji Fukui hates bell peppers.
    • And Chairman Kaga hates udon noodles. Which was teased about in one udon battle.
  • Rodney McKay of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis with citrus fruits. Admittedly, it's because he claims to be allergic to them.

Music[]

  • "Weird Al" Yankovic's Albuquerque: "I! HATE! SAUERKRAUT!"
    • If you were force fed nothing but sauerkraut until you were twenty-six-and-a-half you'd understandably hate the stuff too.

Newspaper Comics[]

  • And of course, there is Mafalda and her legendary hatred of soup. The picture above is the cover of the book Viva La Lata!, co-authored by Quino.
  • Charlie Brown of Peanuts hates coconut - chocolates with coconut centers, in particular. So does Snoopy. And Linus. At a guess, some would say Charles Schulz didn't like coconut.
  • Garfield, mostly due to bad cooking, holds a special disgust for snails, fruitcake, and raisins[2].
    • Except, of course to mess with Jon's mind ("A Vacation From His Senses"). The fact that it worked says something.
    • And shredded coconut - he says it resembles "tiny albino spiders."
    • As well as Spinach. "It looks bad, it tastes bad, it smells bad". (turns bowl over, spinach splats on table) "It even SOUNDS bad."
  • Dennis the Menace hates vegetables and milk - But not things made from milk, like ice cream or chocolate.

Video Games[]

  • Noodles in the second Parappa the Rapper game.
    • Justified in that they're TAKING OVER THE WORLD! (in a way)
  • Professor Carter in Harvest Moon DS (Cute) loathes curry. He hates it even more because it's all his One-Note Cook of an assistant, Flora, knows how to cook. The ironic thing? It's the Trademark Favorite Food of several other characters.
    • Throughout the series, there are food items that are absolutely loathed by certain characters. Ex. Natalie from Island Of Happiness is Squicked by mushrooms and Julia (same game) feels the same about fish.
  • In Tales of Symphonia, every character has a least favorite food as a game mechanic. The most notably overblown in fandom terms is Kratos's (not that one) hatred of tomatoes, possibly because it's amusing for such a stoic badass to have that kind of a weakness. Notably there is one who shares his dislike his son.
    • It's easy to note that Colette does NOT like Green Peppers. When she starts eating them, it's a hint that something is very wrong.
    • In fact, every player character from the Tales (series) has a least favorite food; some games even have a mechanical display of this (such as said food having less of an effect, or even the opposite effect, on said character).
    • Genis Sage doesn't care much for Gels (the healing items of the game), if you don't give him any for so long, he gets the title "I hate gels!" and a skit.
  • Wart in Super Mario Bros 2 hates vegetables enough to make them his Weaksauce Weakness.
  • Grunt from Mass Effect 2 is almost the ultimate example of an Extreme Omnivore - the smell of burning plague victims makes him hungry. However, he hates ramen (it looks like worms, apparently).
  • Klonoa, despite resembling a rabbit (among several other things), is known to hate carrots.
  • Saber from Fate Stay Night is well known for her large and nondiscriminatory appetite. However, she does not like octopus. At all. Not so much for the taste as the appearance; upon finding out that a food she did enjoy (takoyaki) was stuffed with fried octopus, she expressed horror that she'd been eating 'demonic fish of the underworld'. This is revealed elsewhere to be due to her confrontations with the Fourth War's Caster in Fate/Zero, who literally did try to kill her with summoned demonic fish of the underworld; the entire experience left her with a dislike for tentacled, squishy things.
  • Blaz Blue: "There are two things in this world that I just can not stand! Lies and evil and lies and...BELL PEPPERS!"
  • Your character in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles starts out with at least two foods they don't like. These don't restore a lot of their health, though if you feed them those foods often enough they'll start to like them.
  • Dragon Age II: Fenris apparently hates fish, according to one of his comments when entering a warehouse for a quest.
    • Then again, this might be because of the smell.
  • In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic gains EXP from foods he eats, with the amount of EXP he gets based on how much he likes the food. He generally doesn't seem generally fond towards basic sweets and drinks, and seems to have a strong distate for seafood.

Web Comics[]

  • In The Inexplicable Adventures of Bob, Molly the Peanut Butter Monster has expressed discomfort with eating peanut butter, saying it makes her feel vaguely cannibalistic.
  • Sonichu hates pickles because they remind him of a certain body part.
  • Homestuck starts on John Egbert's birthday. As a result of all the cake he has been eating for the occasion, he is sick to death of baked goods — especially those by Betty Crocker. This nearly causes a Heroic BSOD when he realizes that his beloved Fruit Gushers are made by the "Heinous Batterwitch," but he decides that angsting over it is stupid.
    • It's implied that his hatred of Betty Crocker products goes back much farther than that, since his adoptive great-grandmother was Betty Crocker herself and baking seems to be something his father does constantly regardless of the occasion, or lack thereof.
    • In the Alpha Session, John's counterpart, Jane Crocker, dislikes Fruit Gushers, ironically enough.
  • Haley in Order of the Stick doesn't like pickles, leading her none-too-bright rival Crystal to think she can kill Haley by pelting her with pickles.
    • The Monster in the Darkness won't eat the babies that Xykon and Redcloak feed him, and usually just throws them out.
      • That's hardly part of this trope, as not liking babies is quite common. Remember that Mit D never said to like human flesh, it's just that Xykon assumed that a monster should eat babies.
  • Played for Drama with Kokkan in "A Broken Winter". After a year as a child spent around freshly slaughtered animals and dead bodies in Irihi slaughterhouse, he refuses to eat meat of any sort. It's also one of the signs of his ongoing battle with PTSD.

Web Original[]

  • The King of Town in Homestar Runner, while usually fond of anything he could conceivably fit down his throat, hates peas.
    • It is a fan in-joke that if he was served buttered peas, he'd eat the butter off the peas. Somehow.
    • Tiny Samurai (in the Teen Girl Squad series) is the mortal nemesis of corn and corn-based products. No, it doesn't make much more sense in context.
Cquote1

Tiny Samurai: Corn (chips) is no place for a mighty warrior!

Cquote2
    • The KoT also passed up an opportunity to eat egg salad, instead just eating all of the mayonnaise off it. However, this was in Strong Bad's "memory", and probably didn't happen.
  • Speaking of mayonnaise, The Nostalgia Chick has a strong distaste for it.

Western Animation[]

  • Doug hated liver and onions.
  • Tohru's dislike for fish is a constant thorn in his side in Jackie Chan Adventures. This may have had to do with a Running Gag where he was often defeated by fish used as an impromptu weapon before his Heel Face Turn, though he is shown to actually dislike it as food as well.
  • Angelica of Rugrats loves all cookies except coconut ones.
  • Perhaps not quite a dislike, but Darkwing Duck can't stomach spicy foods.
  • children in cartoons would hate vegetables more than children in real life.
  • Murderface on Metalocalypse refuses to eat anything shaped remotely like a penis.
  • Ren and Stimpy: Jerry The Bellybutton Elf hates LINTLOAF?!
  • According to one episode of Tiny Toon Adventures, all kids and broccoli (used to figure out robot duplicates had replaced nearly the entire cast).
  • Kuzco makes several comments throughout The Emperors New School that he hates cauliflower (he hates all veggies, but this one in particular).

Real Life[]

  • George HW Bush: "I do not like broccoli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli."
    • Broccoli farmers sent 20,000 pounds of broccoli to the White House in protest. We're guessing he didn't eat it.
  • This guy really really hates vegetables.
  • Pythagoras (of Pythagorean Theorem fame) was known for his hatred of beans. To wit, Pythagoreanism was a religion based off his work and philosophy, and beans were verboten in said religion, deemed "unclean."
  • For some, a food allergy is the reason that is the reason why they would avoid a certain food.
  • Most people have their least favorite foods.
  • Subverted with children and broccoli in fact some studies shown that broccoli is the favorite vegetable of children despite the belief that children hate broccoli.
  1. The use of "spam" to describe junk e-mail is actually indirectly derived from the Monty Python sketch.
  2. Makes much more sense when you know that grapes and raisins cause kidney failure in cats very rapidly - they're one of the most deadly food items a cat could eat
