Dhux's Scar

"I am Alpha, the beginning... AND THERE SHALL BE NO END!"

La Cicatriz de Dhux / Dhux's Scar is a Spanish RPG by Erilex that was later translated into English. It contains unorthodox battles and a deep and interesting story rife with religious overtones. Nothing is as it seems in Dhux's Scar; the plot will take so many twists and turns that sometimes it can be hard to keep up.

Once, an angel tried to overthrow God. But he was defeated, and his followers expelled from Heaven. His name was Dhux. God forgave him, but engraved a scar on his forehead and forced him to wander the earth, powerless and forever bearing the wounds he received. However, Dhux betrayed God's trust. Even without his powers, he used his guile and poisonous tongue to turn men against each other, causing wars that claimed the lives of thousands. Enraged by this, God cursed Dhux to be punished for all eternity. However, because Dhux is a divine being, he cannot be truly killed. Every 500 years, he is reborn, and the people are tasked with seeking him out and killing him.

...So the story goes, but as one will soon find out, there's more to the story than it appears. The plot follows a weakling merchant called Elijah, a young girl called Celliann, and Faye, an androgymous bodyguard and old acquaintance of Elijah's. Faye is the only one of these characters that is really cut out for combat; Celiann is about as useful as you'd expect a little girl to be and Elijah can only dish out real damage by using magical amulets that are in limited supply. (Even then, a single regular attack from Faye usually deals comparable damage)

Tropes used in Dhux's Scar:

• Action Bomb: Incubi.
• A God Am I: Celliann. With good reason, too.
• AI Roulette: Many bosses have at least one attack that can completely annihilate you, and whether or not you beat them often relies heavily on how often they use it.
• As the Good Book Says...: Subverted. "I am Alpha, the beginning... AND THERE SHALL BE NO END!" Bonus points for the quoter actually being called Alpha.
• Awesome but Impractical: Unholy Prayer. It reduces the HP of all opponents to 1 without fail, even on bosses, but costs 2 PE to use and can therefore backfire horribly later.
• Awesome Yet Practical: Samael's "Soul Reap" ability. It usually deals more damage than a physical attack, and additionally drains HP and MP.
• Battle in the Center of the Mind: The battle with Elijah.
• Berserk Button: Do NOT mess with Celliann unless you want to bring down Sybil's wrath.
  • Elijah flips out when he sees a woman being attacked due to his Dark and Troubled Past.
• BFS: Faye's weapon of choice.
• Better Than a Bare Bulb
• Body Snatcher: The mysterious "Shadowy Figure", a.k.a. Elijah. Yes, it's a Mind Screw. Turns out that Elijah the protagonist is actually Sybil, who s/he thinks is dead. But actually, Elijah was the one who died that day and has been trying to hijack Sybil's body and effectively resurrect himself. In the bad ending, it actually happens.
• Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Only indirectly, however. In Ending A, killing Celliann is the last straw that kicks Sybil's soul out of her body and allows Elijah in. Thus, we get a Downer Ending.
• Butt Monkey: Elijah. This carries over to Sybil as well.

• Character Portrait: The main characters have tons, for almost every expression imaginable. Even a few characters that only exist for one scene before being graphically murdered tend to have at least one, usually two.
• Climax Boss: The Impure Chrysalis and Archangel Gabriel.
• Cool Old Guy: Jazz...sort of.
• Cool Sword: Elijah.
• Cry for the Devil: Elijah's death, where all his previous dignity evaporates and he's reduced to a gibbering wreck, crying "S...Sybil! Help me! I don't want to die!!" as he melts away into light.
• Cryptic Conversation: Often.
• Curb Stomp Battle: You deliver one of these to GOD.
  • Also Archangel Remiel. He doesn't even manage to get a single hit in.
• Cycle of Hurting: Sabidnatzat enemies can cause this, since they have an all-hitting stun attack.
• Dead Little Sister: Sybil, Elijah's twin sister. She's actually Not Quite Dead.
• Deconstructor Fleet
• Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: A completely normal human and a distant descendant of an angel are able to kill the being that was meant to destroy their world.
  • Admittedly, it had only a fraction of its full power. Still a pretty amazing feat, however.
• Did We Just Have Tea with Cthulhu?: Amidst their mutual plotting against each other, Elijah and Celiann take some time to enjoy a festival together.
• Dirty Coward: Elijah.
• Dirty Old Man: Jazz.
• Disc One Nuke: Unholy Prayer. See Awesome but Impractical, above.
  • Also the Mysterious Merchant's wares if you use Merchant's Soul. Many of them are Infinity Minus One Swords or at the very least comparable to endgame equipment. They're expensive, sure, but if you buy some you won't need to buy any more equipment for that character.
• Divine Parentage: Jazz and Faye.
• The Dragon: Maikas/Michael.
• Eldritch Abomination: The Impure Chrysalis, which verges on Body Horror.
• The End of the World as We Know It: The Crisis of Faith, which happened thousands of years before the game begins. At the end of the game, your party causes another one.
• Enfante Terrible: Celliann, adorable fourteen year old girl and Ax Crazy Omnicidal Maniac.
• Exposition Break: Multiple times, though the most prominent is when the party meets up with Samael, who finally explains what's going on in a very long-winded cutscene.
• Fake Difficulty: Every. Single. Boss battle. There's rarely much strategy you can use, so defeating them is almost always a Luck-Based Mission.
• Fallen Angel: Samael, who even says that she's also called "Lucifer" and "Satan". She actually is on the side of good, though, since God Is Evil.
• Fan Disservice: Nudity is frequent and most often combined with gruesome dismemberment.
• Flunky Boss: Hisque.
• Foregone Victory: The battle with Archangel Remiel and Alpha on the good ending.
• Foreshadowing: All the Cryptic Conversations, Celliann's Internal Monologues, and this line:

Elijah: [Celliann] is not my illegitimate daughter.

• Fragile Speedster: Samael.
• Frothy Mugs of Water: Lampshaded.

Man: Here I am, drinking my sorrow away... Elijah: You might want to try booze. No one was ever very successful in drowning their sorrows in water. Man: Leave me alone!

• Full-Frontal Assault: Hisque.
• Fun with Acronyms: Serenity Absolution Freedom Eternity and Emotional Data Evolution Network.
  • They actually made more sense in spanish: Sistema (System) Absoluto (Absolute) Felicidad (Happiness) Eterna (ethernal), which translates to Absolute System of Ethernal Happiness. Esfera De Emociones Negativas, or, in english, Negative Emotions Sphere, which itself is a funny acronym if you think about it.
• Gambit Pileup: To start with, Elijah and Celliann are both trying to fool each other into not suspecting anything simultaneously. But there's also Alpha, who has a multi-million year-spanning gambit to destroy Omega. Jazz and Samael, on the other hand, ultimately use their knowledge of Alpha's plot to execute their own plan to fulfill the prophecy.
• Giant Space Flea From Nowhere: Although there's a boss at the end of almost every dungeon, the game does a good job of avoiding this. The only exceptions are the Great Blue Beast and Adult Itargo. Balbersky may or may not count as well.
• God Is Evil
• Golden Ending: Ending B.
• Go Through Me: A variation; it's the good (ish) guy getting stopped. Nimue does this when Halbarad is about to kill Valedar. However, this is subverted hard; when Nimue says she's willing to die for Valedar, Halbarad simply says, "Then die," and kills her. (Does not end well; it causes a major Freak-Out on Valedar's part and makes him explode.)
• Gender Bender: Faye is only the beginning...
• Gorn / Cruel and Unusual Death: Oh so much of it. Many, many people die in this game, often graphically and in extremely gory and bloody ways. A few examples: heads exploding into blood, someone getting ripped in half while screaming for mercy, and someone getting impaled and skewered from inside.
• Heaven: SAFE.
• Heel Face Door Slam: Gabrielle.
• Heroic Sacrifice: Sybil. Of course, everyone else dies anyway, so it's not a big difference, and she gets to be happy in SAFE.
• Heroic Wannabe: Dario, a young boy who challenges Celliann in the opening scene of the game. This ends badly.
• Hopeless Boss Fight: The fight with "Samba", Played for Laughs. There are also "hopeless battles" labelled as such that are winnable and required to continue the game, even if they may not seem like they are. There are even Foregone Victory battles labeled like this...
• HP to One: Unholy Prayer, Crucifixion, and Divine Providence's "Justice" outcome.
• Implausible Fencing Powers: Faye.
• Improbable Weapon User: Jazz. The staff is just for show.
• Infinity+1 Sword: Eden's Guardian, which has very high attack power and hits twice per attack.
• Interface Spoiler: The battle layout has space for four characters.
• Jesus Was Way Cool: Jazz. He even joins your party! Played with in that he's the son of an angel rather than God himself.
• Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Halbarad.
• Karl Marx Hates Your Guts: Lampshaded when you sell things to shopkeepers; they think "Sucker! I'll sell this for twice as much!"
  • You can also use the Merchant's Lens to f*k the merchants over. Normally, they'd attempt to scam you if you barter. They can't with the lens.
• Kill All Humans: Celliann's goal. See Love Makes You Evil, below.
• Kill'Em All: Only Samael and Sybil die prior to the ending, but since the entire point of the plot is to destroy the world, this is a given. However, everyone either gets reincarnated or goes to Heaven, so this is actually a rather benign example.
• Knight Templar: Maikas and Halbarad. The former has a hidden agenda.
• Large Ham: The few bits of voice acting that exist in the game, especially those in the very final confrontation.

• Last-Disc Magic: Pulsating Light, Heavenly Assault, and Catastrophe.
• Lighter and Softer: The post-Impure Chrysalis part of the game. The gore turns down, the party entirely consists of sympathetic people and you're not in a constant threat of getting butchered by random monsters anymore.
• Lightning Bruiser: Faye.
• Look Behind You!: When Celliann uses Unholy Prayer. "Ah! Behind you!"
• Lovecraftian Superpower: Celliann and other various demons.
  • Even Sybil gains them when she becomes the Wing Of Omega
• Love Makes You Crazy: Halbarad. He eventually escalates into Love Makes You Evil as well.
• Love Makes You Evil: Celliann loves God, but ever since he made the humans he became more and more distracted with them. She believes that if she kills all of them, God will love her again. Cruelly subverted; he doesn't actually love her and all of his actions are an attempt to kill her.
  • Inverted with her relationship with Sybil, however.
• Madness Mantra: "I DON'T WANT TO DIE"
• Mama Bear: Sybil takes this trope and cranks it Up to Eleven. She survives three attacks from GOD to protect her little girl.
• Manipulative Bastard: Celliann.

• Mauve Shirt: Nimue and Valedar.
• The Medic: Jazz.
• Theme Music Power-Up: Halbarad seems to have one.
• Medium Awareness: Jazz. He liked videogames and one of his friends is obsessed with The Observer, Erilex's previous game.
• Meta Guy: Jazz.
• Mind Screw Wham! Episode: The cutscene after the battle with the Impure Chrysalis on the "ending B" path.
• Minor Major Character: Pope Ardheras.
• Morality Kitchen Sink
• Multiple Endings
• Non-Lethal KO: "Elijah is knocked unconscious." Though this is definitely not done to keep the game family-friendly, given how gory and edgy it already is.
• Nonstandard Game Over: Played for Laughs in the Domain of the Heart.
• Not Quite Dead: Sybil.
• Not-So-Harmless Villain: Elijah and Faye are mostly ignorant of Celliann and her godlike powers of being able to massacre things. That is, until the party reaches Jehridan, where she gets fed up, goes One-Winged Angel, and tries to kill them.
• Obfuscating Stupidity and Obfuscating Insanity: Jazz.
• Ominous Save Prompt: Certain save points will recommend you save in a different slot, often in Lemony Narrator fashion or by Lampshade Hanging.

"Not a good time to overwrite your last save file. Seriously."

• The Omniscient Council of Vagueness: Diviel's demon council. The game sets them up to be major villains, but this is subverted hard. All you get to fight is three members, then Halbarad shows up and massacres them. Turns out they weren't major characters at all; they were just Sacrificial Lambs.
• One-Winged Angel: Celliann when she turns into the Impure Chrysalis. Also, Gabrielle.
• Plot Armor: Exploited by Jazz.
• Point of No Return: Multiple.
• Preemptive Declaration: "Are you sure you should be paying so much attention to me? A distraction could prove fatal."
• Puzzle Boss: Elijah.
• Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Celliann. Jazz and Samael, too, what with being a demigod and an angel, respectively. Jazz does look really old, though he does not look 5753 at all.
• Reduced Mana Cost: The Fallen Angel Feather. Fittingly, Samael starts with one equipped.
• Refuge in Audacity: God Is Evil, many people are graphically torn apart, impaled or squished, Jesus is a lecherous old man who's buddies with Satan (who's benevolent), and his mother was raped by Archangel Michael, the pope is a ruthless Mad Scientist who molests a semi-angelic Wholesome Crossdresser...
• R-Rated Opening: You wanted an oldschool RPG? Here's your oldschool RPG. With gore. Whoa.
• Sacrificial Lion: Halbarad and Gabrielle.
• Satan Is Good: Kind of.
• Save the World: Inverted and played straight at the same time; in order to save the universe and afterlife, you need to destroy the planet the game takes place in, which is dangerously past its expiration date.
• Schizo-Tech: Justified; the world before the Crisis of Faith was one of high technology, but after the Crisis happened, most of it was lost, and of that, only some of it is approved for use by the Church.
• Shout-Out: "Male, female, what's the difference? Power is beautiful, and I've got th-" "Yeah, yeah, I get it. Let's stop right there before we delve too far into reference hell."
  • Faye's Infinity-1 Sword is called the "Phantasmagoria".
  • Shout-Out: "Those are just flesh wounds!"
  • "One does not simply walk into Mord... Protea."
• Sinister Scythe: Samael.
• Subtext: There's often a contrast between Celiann's (and occasionally Elijah's) spoken text and thoughts.
• Suffer the Slings: Celiann.
• Super Move Portrait Attack: Celestial Assault, Pulsating Light, Jazz Smash and all of Samael's skills.
• Squishy Wizard: Arguably Elijah, whose amulets cover most of the traditional "elemental spells" in most RPGs. Also, as stated above, he's a weakling; all of his stats except intelligence are pathetic.
  • Cellliann's actually much more fitting for this trope, since her powers are far greater than the amulets'... but she's still physically a little girl.
• Stupid Sexy Flanders: If you have to ask, you aren't far enough in the game.
• Super Soldier: The Cherubs. They're actually all clones of Faye.
• Sword Beam: Underground Missile.
• Took a Level In Badass: Sybil, unlike their previous equivalent, is a formidable fighter.
• Welcome to Corneria: Lampshaded.

Old Man: Serena is a small fishing village located to the south of Jehridan. Elijah: To think the day would come when I would find information like this to be of any use... Faye: We usually arrive in most towns through more conventional means.

• When Trees Attack: The "Sabidnatzat" enemies.
• Triple Boss: Omega's Wing.
• The Unfought: Michael.
• Theme Naming: All the forests are named "Fors[negative emotion]".
• Unreadably Fast Text: There's a fisherman NPC at the beginning of the game who has this while he's trying to explain a fishing minigame (that does not actually exist) to you.
• Unwitting Pawn: Alpha, amazingly.
• Vendor Trash: To avoid the Money Spider trope. Lampshaded in their descriptions; "Just sell it. This game has no crafting quests."
• Visionary Villain: Alpha.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: Jazz and Samael.
• Well-Intentioned Extremist: Alpha is revealed to be this right at the very end, where it's revealed that he has a very good motive to destroy the entire SAFE/EDEN system; when Administrators die, they just end up with complete oblivion; no SAFE or reincarnation. Their methods are still quite objectionable, however, and it comes too late to stop the climatic Curb Stomp Battle.
  • However, if some lines of dialog hold truth to them, then the administrators would still exist if someone found happiness with them, which is why Celliann exists in SAFE with Sybil.

• What the Hell, Hero?: Faye occasionally calls Elijah out on his jackassery.
• The Wonka: Jazz.
• White-Haired Pretty Girl: Celliann. Subverted in that she's treated with the same negative connotations as a White-Haired Pretty Boy. And she's an actual albino. That too.
• Wholesome Crossdresser: Faye.
• World Half Empty: The world is filled with corrupt, unpleasant people and ruled by an autocratic, militaristic Church and a psychotic God. The alternative to living under the Church's protection is to suffer nightmarish attacks by demons.
• Wrong Genre Savvy: Alpha. "I am the hero of this story, you see. I am the rebel, the one who stands against the system! Isn't that the kind of character you humans idolize the most?!"
