Spoilers for Undertale ahead
The Main Characters[]
Kris[]
The player character and apparent lone human inhabitant of the monster village of Hometown.
Tropes exhibited by this character include:
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Simpsons yellow in the light world, blue-skinned in the Dark World.
- Ambiguous Gender: Similarly to Undertale's protagonist, Kris is referred to as 'them'.
- Contrasting Sequel Character: To Frisk. Both are Silent Protagonists controlled by the player, but Frisk is a child who finds themselves lost in the monsters' world, while Kris appears to have lived there for most of their life.
- Composite Character: Has aspects of both Frisk and the Fallen Child on their design and personality.
- Silent Protagonist: Even in-universe, they don't speak one word.
- Vague Age: Kris is at least a teenager, but their exact age is not stated.
Susie[]
A school bully that is teleported to the Dark World with Kris.
Tropes exhibited by this character include:
- The Bully: Starts off as this.
- Face Heel Turn: Played with: she joins Lancer, but as he is a massive Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain her morality doesn't change much.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Eventually develops into this.
- Token Evil Teammate: Again, she starts off this trope.
Ralsei[]
A black goat-like monster who looks like Asriel. He is one of the main charachters and helps guide Kris and Susie through the dark world
Tropes exhibited by this character include:
- Adorkable: Just try watching him and not want to give him a hug.
- Deconstruction: Of "Pacifist Route" players. His morality that people can always have good in them and can be reasoned with simply doesn't work here like it would in Undertale.
- Foil:
- He has a similar role to Flowey, being the initial "guide" to the player, but has Asriel's personality.
- Also to Susie, being the Nice Guy part of the group to her Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: Thinks he's in an idealistic world where anyone can be redeemed like the first game. Spades King manipulates that belief to lower his guard.
The Spades King[]
The king of Darkness and the Big Bad of the first chapter.
Tropes exhibited by this character include:
- Abusive Dad: His Establishing Character Moment is threatening to kill his own son, and then trying to force said son to watch him kill his friends.
- Bait the Dog: Seems to redeem himself after being defeated, but this turns out to just be manipulation on his part.
- Evil Counterpart: To Asgore. Both are kings of the area the protagonist is trapped in but Asgore was a tragic anti-villain, whereas the Spades King is both abusive and manipulative.
- Hate Sink: Has no redeemable qualities or Freudian Excuse that justifies his actions. He is simply a sadistic and cowardly Jerkass.
The Fallen Child[]
- Demonic Possession: Does this to Kris at the end of Chapter 1.
- Walking Spoiler: The fact they're in the game is already a Colossal Spoiler. The fact they posses Kris is an even bigger one.
