  • Extremely common in Die for Our Ship fanfiction. Basically, if someone likes a more or less physically/mentally/emotionally capable woman (Action Girl, Passionate Sports Girl, Badass Damsel, Plucky Girl, Silk Hiding Steel, etc. among other female archetypes) but don't like a certain couple involving her (whether canon or not), they can easily break up said couple via making her love interest a Domestic Abuser and stripping the female character of her spine and/or fighting skills. That way, it's totally justified to have the other half of the Fan-Preferred Couple rescuing her!
    • Some fans even decry the feminine love interest for being "spineless" and "antifeminist" and that the Action Girl deserves the male lead more...only to turn said Action Girl into a simpering wuss who needs rescuing and the guy to kiss her angst away. Apparently being a spineless noodle is okay when it's their chosen girl doing it.
    • Non-DFOS fics also tend to have this. Apparently, many badfic writers think that the only way to get a "more or less physically/mentally/emotionally capable woman" to fall for the chosen love interest is subjecting her to the removal of her mental/physical strength, or both.
  • Used in the Hogwarts Exposed series, in which Hermione (who was, by the fanfiction's own admission, one of three to defeat Voldemort) goes to be some saintly nunnish person who adopts a Mary Sue student, scolds Ginny for wearing an outfit she thought was too revealing, quickly hooks up with Harry and marries him by the second fanfiction while being extremely lovey-dovey, and at one point shaves her nether regions just because he tells her he finds that more appealing. Possibly one of the worst scenes in the first fanfiction is when Neville begins to stroke her thigh while they're attending a concert and does not realize that she is bothered by this (don't ask). As he moves his hand closer to her crotch, she frets over what to do, afraid that hitting him or leaving early will garner unwanted attention from the press who are in the audience. Apparently Hermione, who solved so many traps and riddles in the series, was unable to think to just push Neville's hand away, or whisper "Stop it". Ginny gets it too. Besides the aforementioned revealing dress scene, it was mentioned that she slept with countless Muggles and wizards, including Snape. And like Hermione, she shows no signs of her magical skills, loyalty, or toughness from the series. Ginny's bad characterization is even lampshaded by an in-character Ginny during one of the Das Mervin sporkings on Live Journal.

"A Harmonian badfic, you say? So am I a whore or dead in this one?"

"The former."

"Figured as much."

  • There's an entire disturbing Fanfic community dedicated to doing this to Lenneth so that Lezard can be the dominant one of the "relationship". Oddly, it leaves Hrist and Silmeria alone.
  • The infamous Hetalia fic All He Ever Wanted pulls this on the aforementioned Hungary, whom Prussia horribly tortures and rapes to both force her into a Face Heel Turn and "teach a lesson" to her beloved ex-husband Austria, whom Prussia is holding hostage.
    • Vietnam was hit with this too. In World War Two, Vietnam the country had already started fighting for its independence from France. In Hetalia canon, Vietnam the Moe Anthropomorphism is mentioned to be a Plucky Girl who follows the example of the many emotionally/physically strong women in her history. In the fic, said Moe Anthropomorphism is... Bound and Gagged.
    • That's barely the only one. In many, many Prussia/Hungary works, the sweet and gentle Meido who managed to avert this trope in canon is portrayed as a weepy mess who secretly pines for Prussia after being forced to marry Austria via the Austro-Hungarian Compromise and/or is abused in many ways by Austria so Prussia must hop in to rescue her and show her what true love is. Yes, Hungary has been shown to be physically more powerful than both Prussia and Austria, but in these fanfics she wails and wangsts endlessly before even trying to do something to defend herself. For worse, considering the main couple in these fics, it's mixed with Die for Our Ship since Austria is portrayed as a Jerkass or even a Complete Monster to make Prussia look better.
    • The other girls also go through this often in some shipping fanfics, leading to the untrue and unfair assumption from the most rabid Yaoi Fangirls and "feminist fans" about all the Hetalia girls being Shallow Love Interests in canon. The more frequent victims of this are Belarus (who goes from an hilariously creepy Yandere and Knife Nut who chases after Russia and breaks Liet's fingers, to either Russia or America's blushy and passive, or as much passive-aggressive, bride) and Taiwan (who isn't action-geared and is comfy with her uber girliness, but is still a Genki Plucky Girl... and yet she ends up as a Yamato Nadeshiko caricature who only wants to be Japan's child bride).
  • In Digimon fanfiction, you'll be hard-pressed to find a fic that has Rika/Ruki acting anything like herself, preferring instead to make her a weak, weeping wallflower who can't handle any aspect of life without being rescued by Takato/Jenrya/Ryo. Even people who don't like Yuri or Interspecies Romance wind up preferring stories pairing her with Renamon because they're the fics in which she's more likely to be capable of being in a romance and acting something like herself at the same time.
  • While it's safe to say that the entire casts of both Mass Effect games experience varying degrees of chickification in fanfiction at some point or another; Garrus Vakarian (in a rare male example of this trope seen near exclusively in het fic where he's paired with Female Shepard), Commander Shepard (usually Female Shepard, though Male Shepard is not immune either), Tali'Zorah and Liara T'Soni experience the heaviest levels of this trope more often than the others.
  • The infamous Avatar: The Last Airbender fan-comic How I Became Yours does this to both Azula and Toph. Azula? The Magnificent Bitch with a Jerkass Woobie streak becomes a sort of Yue copycat who does almost nothing but whine and cry after getting amnesia and has a super Sue-fied love story with Sokka. Toph? She goes from a devil-may-care Badass Adorable who still didn't mind a makeover once, to a soft-spoken and nervous flower of a girl who willingly bottoms to a guy she calls "twinkle-toes" and is a borderline maidservant to Katara.
    • Pulled on Katara too. She goes from an Action Girl Team Mom with mood swings and Hidden Depths into a whiny, weepy, selfish bitch whom everyone mollycoddles, who cares more about being Zuko's pasted-on love interest and babymama than anything, and only shows her Action Girl skills when she bloodily and horribly kills Mai in Revenge.
  • The female characters get hit with this trope in quite a few other shippy Avatar fics as well:
    • Sokka/Azula and some Ty Lee/Azula shippers are fond of making Azula a weepy mess for either one to coddle and comfort, ignoring the fact that Azula is also very prickly and would sooner hide her angst from either of them.
    • Katara becoming a trembling flower under the all-powerful Zuko was as common as corn flakes during season one, and so was having her pining for Zuko and becoming his arm candy in later fics. But even some Aang/Katara fics could be just as bad, ignoring the fact that in canon, she was more often the one rescuing him.
    • Toph didn't get this as badly, but some fics pairing her with Katara made her weak and helpless to a variety of men as well as her suddenly-evil parents.
    • This continued with The Legend of Korra. The infamous Abuse Cycle invoked this to make Mako look as evil as possible, while some Korrasami fics have Asami as a wilting flower for Korra to rescue or comfort.
  • Touhou fandom is swimming in this trope, numerous Badass Adorables inflicted with anything from immobilising stuttering to complete submission and helplessness when faced with the character with whom the writer has decided to pair them. Turning Remilia (an ancient terror of the night with a habit of eating people) into a child with a Precocious Crush, or turning Alice (an antisocial hermit that prefers her dolls over people and possesses enough snark to challenge Marisa) into either a sterotypical Tsundere or a lovesick puppy are the most common, though enough searching reveals examples for nearly every character. Remilia's sister Flandre is also a common target due to fan artists' tendency to exaggerate their childishness. Night Sparrow Love is probably the most famous example, and while well-written as an independent work it's difficult to remember that Mystia and Mokou are a con-artist and a borderline-Death Seeker respectively, not the blushing, Cannot Spit It Out sufferers that are depicted.
  • Was very, very common in the Cardcaptor Sakura fandom. Sakura, one of the most powerful magic users in that canon and possibly in the CLAMP universe, would inevitably be a big victim of Domestic Abuse at the hands of her canon (and male) Love Interest Syaoran, to make excuses as to why she should break away from him and search for comfort in the arms of her Unlucky Childhood Friend Tomoyo.
    • Tomoyo herself gets this in plenty of Tomoyo/Sakura fics, personality-wise. Canon Tomoyo is a gentle Yamato Nadeshiko in training with a cheerful face and Sakura's biggest supporter in everything. If she has any angst it's over being an only child whose mother loves her dearly, but works a lot, which can get lonely. But she never lets anything get her down for too long. In fanfic, she's constantly wangsting over her unrequited love for Sakura, going into breakdowns over seeing or even thinking about her being with Syaoran, even committing suicide over not winning Sakura's love.
  • In the Homestuck fandom, common in most of the female cast, most likely because they're all Action Girls. Especially Jade Harley.
  • Fire Emblem fans have a bad, BAD habit of doing this to the female characters. Rather ironic since they tend to whine and accuse the canon girls of being weak and whiny... but then they portray the girls as worse than they'd ever be in their games. Some examples are:
    • Fire Emblem Blazing Blade: Lyndis, especially in fics that pair her with Kent. Florina is canonically a Shrinking Violet who she always tries to stand up on her own, but fics often made her only a sobbing maiden. Farina also got this in a few Hector/Farina fics. One particular author did this to Priscilla, Ninian, Rebecca, and Nino.
    • Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones: Eirika, especially in fics pairing her with Seth. Some Tana/Cormag fics back in the day also did this to Tana, making her emo and suicidal for no reason other than they wanted Cormag to comfort her. Amelia could get this in many Franz/Amelia fanworks, too.
    • Fire Emblem Tellius: Princess Elincia, in fics pairing her with Ike. She goes from a kind yet badass queen to a weepy princess who gives the crown that she fought so hard for away so she can chase Ike across the continent. Some fics also do this to Lucia, who recovered surprisingly well from the trauma of almost being killed in Radiant Dawn.
    • Fire Emblem Awakening: The Female Avatar, Cordelia, Lissa, Olivia (another "shy girl who still tries to be strong, reduced to a weepy baby" case), Lucina. Even Sumia, who canonically is a Submissive Badass, gets sometimes hit with this.
    • Fire Emblem Fates: again the Female Avatar, but also Camilla and Oboro. Sakura is yet another case of "shy girl who wants to be stronger, but ends up as a weak and whiny child". (Especially in post-Conquest fics; in canon, despite all she's been through, she's determined to support her big sister as she becomes Queen of Hoshido and keep their loved ones' legacies strong... but in these fics, she spends all the time whining, crying, or even being suicidal.) Selena also gets this in fics pairing her with Subaki.
    • Fire Emblem: Three Houses: Edelgard von Hraesvelgr isn't AS horribly hit by this as other girls, but some fanworks (especially Female Avatar/Edelgard) tend to focus much more on her angst over her massive Dark and Troubled Past and an apparent irresistible need to constantly be comforted by her love interest (preferently, her girlfriend), rather than her canon determination to carry on her goals no matter what even if it hurts her or kills her.
      • This fic has Ingrid being kidnapped and sexually assaulted by bandits so Felix can come to her rescue and have Feelings about the whole thing.
  • Voltron: Legendary Defender
    • The resident Badass Bookworm Katie/Pidge often ends up being captured, tortured, raped, dangerously ill, or imperiled by pregnancy or childbirth just so the others can fret over her and treat her like a frail little doll they must coddle and protect at all costs despite doing none of this in canon. (Pregnancy and baby fics are especially bad about this.) She's also subjected to the Unrequited Tragic Maiden trope despite not having a Romance Arc of her own in canon; the target of her angsty affection is usually Lance (who canonically is in love with Allura), but Shiro (who canonically leans to guys) is just as popular. A fic has her crying her heart out over not being able to bear children and nearly going insane like late series!Honerva as she tries to infuse her "robot child" Chip with Quintessence to make him "real."
    • Princess Allura, despite bieng an Adaptational Badass in this series, gets just as badly chickified by her so-called "fans" as Pidge gets in fanfic. Lotor/Allura fans love reducing Allura solely to her and Lotor's relationship (forgetting that even when Lotor's feelings were more genuine than in the original, he still wasn't a saint regarding her and the Alteans), insist that her other love interest Lance sexually harassed her into giving him a chance (conveniently forgetting that Lotor all but commited genocide and that Allura only accepted Lance's feelings after he stopped hitting on her), and have even said that Allura's Heroic Sacrifice was her killing herself to be with Lotor. Near all the Lotura fanworks feature her as few more than Lotor's arm candy as well. Fans who were also upset by her Heroic Sacrifice at the end also twist it to suggest she was forced to die by the hateful, sexist, racist writers who "killed her" against her will and that Shiro or someone else should have "protected her" from it...despite the sacrifice being Allura's own choice!
  • Lotura fans in the original Voltron's fandom do this to Allura, too. While this Allura was more prone to Distressed Damsel moments than her Legendary Defender counterpart, she was just as determined to help the team and stop the Drule Empire from taking over. Fanfics threw this all away to make her Lotor's simpering sex slave, doe-eyed arm candy, or the sobbing victim of a suddenly abusive Keith for Lotor to rescue.
    • Many Sven/Romelle shippers inadvertently do this to Romelle and her GoLion counterpart Amue in their headcanons or blog posts. While both versions did go through quite the trauma (especially Amue), neither lady ever curled up in a corner and wept while she waited for someone to rescue her or gave in to her captor, and in Romelle's case she's the one who rescued Sven by pulling him back from the Despair Event Horizon. Shippers, however, define both of them only by their traumatic experiences: Romelle, so Sven can coddle her as she breaks down from constant PTSD fits and Amue, so they can bash her love interest Ryou Shirogane for not treating her with kid gloves after what she went through even though Amue can more than handle his sass and even sasses him back!
  • Maya Fey in the Ace Attorney franchise is fairly girly with the tendency to find herself in trouble and need Phoenix to help her out, but she's also a Plucky Girl who refuses to let her circumstances crush her. In "Phaya" fanfic? She becomes a standard Distressed Damsel who does nothing but cry and mope while she waits for Phoenix to rescue her. She's also prone to hysterics, whining, and melodrama over the status of their relationship or the very sight of Phoenix so much as looking at another woman.
    • Franziska von Karma gets this, too, in fics that pair her with Edgeworth.
  • One particular author thrived on this trope in her fics when she was active, turning the likes of Francoise "003" Arnoul, Princess, Trixie Shimura, and Kaoru Kamiya into weeping, fainting damsels who constantly needed their male love interests to comfort and rescue them. The men didn't fare much better, becoming melodramatic wimps who lived only for their girlfriends.
  • Sailor Moon:
    • Back in the old days, it was common for writers of the Zoycite/Malachite pairing to turn the headstrong, bitchy Zoycite into a blushing prissy princess (literally in some cases) who needed Malachite to hold her hand and rescue her from Neflyte and Jedite's bullying. (Or in one case, them kidnapping and trying to rape her-seriously, she didn't even think to fight them off or even teleport away when she's lashed out at people for less! All so Malachite could pull a Big Damn Heroes and sweep her to safety!) Other times she would tremble and cower at the mercy of Queen Beryl, who randomly had it out for her despite the two having a rather cordial professional relationship in canon before Zoycite angered her by disobeying a direct order.
    • Also happened to Minako in fics that paired her with Kunzite or even Makoto, dialing her canon angst Up To Eleven.
    • Usagi herself gets hit with this hard in shipper 'fics despite developing into something of a Crouching Moron Hidden Badass in canon. Either she becomes the victim of a suddenly abusive Mamoru for Rei or Seiya to rescue, or a cowering submissive to the dangerously masculine Mamoru as he charms his way into her pants in mundane AU fics.
    • Some Haruka/Michiru fics have Michiru attacked by a rapist so Haruka can either rescue her or play nurse while she suffers from PTSD for many chapters. Haruka herself also gets this treatment in some Seiya/Haruka fics.
    • Rei Hino was a milder case in the old days. While she retained her temper and fiery nature, she acquired a bucketload of angst to go with it, especially in fics that shipped her with Usagi. Some had her go into a deep depression over her unrequited love, while others made her outright suicidal. Considering how well she took her heartbreak over Mamoru in the first anime, she's one of the last people who would off herself over not getting the guy or girl.
  • Yui Hongo in Fushigi Yuugi was canonically emotionally fragile to the point where making her first wish drained her physically and Seiryuu was ultimately able to devour her and went through quite the Break The Cutie, but was far from a pathetic little weakling; she slapped Nakago at one point for harming Tamahome, and both was truly kind to Suboshi and firmly slapped him away when he gave her a Forceful Kiss. Most fics remove her spine to have her in a constant state of depression, or pile on traumas such as terminal illness, actual rape, blindness, kidnapping, and unwanted pregnancies. More than half the time this is so Suboshi can rescue her and become her knight in shining armor, which he tried and failed to be in the show.
  • Tira Misu from Sorcerer Hunters got hit hard with this in fics pairing her with Carrot or Marron. In the former case, she'd be kidnapped or nearly killed so he could rescue her, or simply weeping her head off over her seemingly unrequited love for him. In the latter case, Carrot would end up being a heartbreaking jerkass or blatantly choosing Tira's sister Chocolat, causing Tira to run away crying so Marron could find her and comfort her. Canonically, at least in the manga, Tira was shy and insecure and a bit prone to tears when it came to her feelings for Carrot, but she was far from a helpless damsel and oftentimes she was the one rescuing him.
  • A lot of female characters in the Pokémon fandom get hit with this:
    • Misty from the anime is a tsundere Action Girl who occasionally needs rescuing (which in canon, is no more often than Brock). Fanfic has her constantly being kidnapped or attacked or almost raped, or abused by her sisters so Ash can rescue and comfort her.
    • Lyra sometimes gets this from people who ship her with Silver.
    • May is often turned into a helpless damsel who's continually captured and raped by Archie, Maxie, or both.
    • Poor Hilda from Pokémon Black and White arguably got this the worst. Due to the existence of Ghetsis and the complicated relationship between N and either player character, N/Hilda shippers often made her helpless to N's frustrated sexual assault or had Ghetsis capture and rape her to hurt N. Fics that didn't rely on rape had her simply become a weepy mess upon N leaving Unova and longing for him to come back to her.
    • Sabrina has gotten hit hard with this. While she isn't the antagonist that the anime or the Adventures manga cast her as, she's not quite a sobbing, blushing uke like fanart often has her as.
    • Cori Falls loved doing this to poor Jessie in her fics. Sure, the girl's still allowed to kick some ass, but more often than not, she's crying or swooning in James's arms or needing to be rescued. The worst example of this, oddly enough, comes from Stage One, in the fic Seven Shades of Red. When Jessie is sexually harassed by a bunch of guys, rather than smashing the lot of them across the room with her mallet, she simply yells and snaps at them to stop it, forcing James to step in and tell them off. The guys do let up, because they think Jessie is "James's woman," and Jessie is forced to pretend they're a couple to avoid further harassment. Had this taken place in the show itself, James likely wouldn't know what was going on until he heard the loud noises and the men's screams.
      • Other Rocketshippers were prone to doing this to Jessie, too, having her kidnapped or in some other form of peril so James could rescue and fret over her. None were quite as painstaking about it as Cori, however.
  • One BNF in the Bleach fandom did this to Orihime Inoue. In canon she was a sweet girl who'd led a hard life, had a lot of hidden insecurities, and broke under the strain when she let a villain take her hostage in exchange for her friends' lives. Despite everything, though, she was far from delicate, was determined to get stronger and keep her loved ones safe, and recovered quite well from her ordeals. In this writer's fics, she started out as a loopy airhead who melted into a puddle of horny around Ishida Uryuu, then as the series went on she became a weeping, wailing bucket of woe who cried over her oh so unrequited love for Ichigo while watching him become Rukia's soul mate. Or over her "failures" during the Hueco Mundo/Lust Arc. Or because it was hot out and she was pregnant. Either way, it was up to the gallant manful Ishida to kiss her angst away. Until the lady realized her fanfics weren't going to become canon, declared her newfound hatred for Orihime, and killed her off.
    • A lot of bad IchiRuki fan works did this to Rukia, too. In canon she had her own share of angst and struggles, and almost crossed the Despair Event Horizon herself. But she still got right back up, kept on fighting, and doing the best she could for her loved ones. In fanfic, she becomes a weepy shell of herself huddled in a corner with PTSD waiting for Ichigo to sweep her off her feet. Or worse, they'd turn her childhood friend Renji into a Domestic Abuser for Ichigo to rescue her from.
  • This was very common with Slayers fic back in the day, turning the violent but secretly good-hearted Anti-Heroine Lina Inverse into a weak damsel easily overpowered by even the most basic bandits so Gourry or Zelgadis could rescue her. While Lina was far from unvulnerable and at least twice lost her powers on screen, even when overpowered she would at least attempt to fight back whether it worked or not, and the times she didn't were those when she was on the verge of breaking after LOTS of misfortune or abuse.
    • Amelia, too. Despite her utter moe appeal, she was quite the little badass: she knew all kinds of white magic (i.e. she could easily use the Ra Tilt, said to be the shamanistic version of the Dragon Slave) and hand to hand combat - the latter of which she preferred, sometimes empowering it with magic. She was also plucky as hell, and just as determined as Lina to keep fighting back as much as she could. Fanfic turns her into a simpering weakling to be rescued by Zelgadis.
  • A decent number of Daria fics pairing the title character with Trent did this back in the pairing's heyday, especially the Diane Long Continuum. Other fics had her being raped or abused by Tom Sloane so Trent or Jane could rescue her.
  • This The Facts of Life fic turns the tough but secretly tender Jo into a weeping little victim who's constantly beaten, raped, and berated by her evil OC boyfriend, created solely to make her a sad little woobie for Blair to rescue.
