Real Japan 7 Team[]

  • The Psycho Rangers: Much less villainous than usual, since this is a sports manga without real evil characters.

Other characters[]

Roberto Hongo[]

Roberto
  • Adaptation Dye Job: He's always had Brown Eyes, but as seen in the picture his 2018 series incarnation has Blue Eyes instead.
  • Break the Cutie: His backstory, especially his childhood, as told by the J and Road to 2002 series, and his eyesight problems, which forced him into retirement. He could be seen as a male Broken Bird, to a degree.
  • Broken Ace: His sad backstory and the loss of his career made him go into drunken and sucidal depression. But with the Ozora's help, he picked himself up.
  • Big Brother Mentor: To Tsubasa.
  • Driven to Suicide: In the manga and original series, Roberto was about to throw himself into the sea during an Heroic BSOD caused by the loss of his career, but Tsubasa's father Koudai saved him and helped him get back to his feet. It should be noticed that the Road to 2002 TV series removes his suicidal episode.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Until he met Tsubasa, he was heavily drinking in order to drown his sorrow of losing his career.
  • I Owe You My Life: To Koudai for saving him when he tried to kill himself, and to Tsubasa for giving him a new reason to live.
  • Missing Mom: The J and Road series dwell a little on this, but offer different backgrounds: in J she left him in a convent and died before she could return to him, while in Road to 2002 she was a factory worker and died in a work accident.
  • Mitsuru Miyamoto: In Road to 2002.
  • Perma Stubble
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Used this in his first apparition. The Nankatsu kids had to pick up their jaws off the floor upon seeing him play.
  • Self-Made Man: From an orphaned Street Urchin, to a world-class player, to a well-respected coach.
  • Street Urchin: As a child.
  • Team Dad

Louis van Saal[]

Dutch Manager of FC Barcelona. He is the one who saw Tsubasa's potential and invited him to play for the Catalan giants.

  • Expy: of Louis van Gaal, Barcelona manager for 2002.
  • The Chessmaster: As a football manger, this is a prerequisite. He decided to move Tsubasa to the reserve squad because he cannot use two playmakers in the pitch with Rivaul.

Manabu Ookawa[]

Manabu

One of the original members of the Nankatsu team, who plays only through the elementary arc. In Junior High he becomes either a cheerleader or an assistant, depending on the media.

Sanae "Anego" Nakazawa[]

Sanae S2 (2018) 1

Tsubasa's Love Interest, a young girl whom he met as soon as he arrived to Nankatsu. First the head cheerleader of the team, then its Cute Sports Club Manager.

  • Adaptation Dye Job: She's normally a brunette, but has burgundy-red in the 2018 anime.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She and Tsubasa, oh yes.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Especially when she's a pre-teen. She tones it down as a teenager, though it flares up in the presence of Rika in the movies.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Kumi.
  • Cute Sports Club Manager: Of Nankatsu, during the Junior High arc. She's the Manga Ur Example of this trope.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the Road to 2002 anime, as it skips through all romantic developments between her and Tsubasa, Sanae's teenage and adult years were drastically changed as a result: she's the same character-wise and she and Tsubasa still have a Long-Distance Relationship, but this doesn't evolve on her following her boyfriend and later husband to Spain, as it never happened in this continuity.
  • Expy: Of Aki Yamazaki, the CSCM from the CT pilot story.
  • Fan Girl: Not only of Tsubasa, but of the whole team. Given a cute lampshade by Tsubasa in the 2002 anime.
  • Family Business: The Nakazawas own an ice-cream parlor. In the Road to 2002 TV series they own the whole building the parlor is and have their living quarters in the second floor.
  • Girliness Upgrade: From a huge tomboy to an more quiet cutie. Some manga stories and the 2018 series hang huge lampshades on this, and it's also subverted in that she didn't change her personality overnight - the manga has her screaming at Ishizaki when he sees her wearing a short dress and says she's doing it to make Tsubasa look at her.
  • Girl Next Door: A bit more aggressive than many, but still.
  • The Heart: Her encouragement and fangirling of Tsubasa and his teams can be very uplifting at times.
  • Hello, Nurse!: Her beauty was praised more or less frequently in the anime series and the manga.
  • Hot Mom: She's currently pregnant in the manga, and about to give birth in Rising Sun. A short Alternate Universe story makes her the mother of twin boys who look a LOT like their dad; the manga later takes this idea and make it more or less canon, as she turns out to be pregnant with twins too.
  • Love At First Sight: Actually subverted in the first TV series. Sanae was reluctant to accept Tsubasa at first, until she got to witness his skills first-hand; she was even downright hostile to him since he accidentally hit her best friend Manabu with his soccer ball.
  • The Medic: Pretty efficient nurse.
  • My Girl Back Home: For Tsubasa, during his days in Brazil.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Sorta, in the first anime. Since Sanae's actual name was only given late in the first arc, the credits initially referred to her as "Miyuki Namiki" and switched accordingly when said name was mentioned onscreen.
  • Platonic Life Partners: With Manabu, and to a smaller degree Ishizaki.
  • Plucky Girl: This young lady has her ups and downs, but doesn't stay down for long.
  • Secret Keeper: In the original series, J and the 2018 one, she becomes an asymmetric one after she accidentally overhears Misugi and Yayoi talking about the first's illness.. No one ever learns that she knows, and it doesn't matter later... usually, since in J she's soon caught by Yayoi
  • Shorttank: As a little girl and a teenager.
  • Shut UP, Hannibal: When Kanda almost kidnaps her and says Tsubasa won't come to face him for her sake, Sanae immediately tells him it's not true. Right then, Tsubasa shows up.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her mother and grandmother appear in the manga (and the first is also seen in the 2023 series), and Sanae is basically a younger version of both.
  • Team Mom: As the Nankatsu assistant.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: Subverted, she made the huge flag that she uses to cheer for Nankatsu - when she was at her most tomboyish stage.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She grew into this in the manga. The animes tend to make her a mild Type B Tsundere instead.

Kumi Sugimoto[]

Kumi S2 (2018) 1

One of Sanae's closest friends, and her fellow Nankatsu assistant. She joined the team at first just to be closer to her crush Tsubasa...

  • Adapted Out: From the Road to 2002 anime and the Rise of New Champions game.
  • Character Development: She initially joined the team only because she was a Tsubasa fangirl and wanted to approach him, but ended up loving the sport for real and caring for the team boys as her older "siblings". Lampshaded in canon more than once.
  • Cute Sports Club Manager: She's one of Sanae's two assistants.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the Shin OAV and the movies. She doesn't appear in the Road to 2002 anime either, but does return to the 2018 one.
  • Fortune Teller: She's implied to come from a family of these in WYC, since her grandmother is one and she seems to be her apprentice.
  • Genki Girl: Very much so. The 2018 series amps up her genkiness Up to Eleven, even, giving her some rather hilarious moments.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Until the World Youth Cup.
  • Hidden Depths: At times, Kumi shows unexpected maturity regarding her feelings for Tsubasa. I.e., she actually does tell Sanae that she intends to confess to him because she sincerely thinks it's the fair and right thing to do and later she immediately concedes when it's obvious that Tsubasa has chosen Sanae, without even a second thought or any misgivings.
  • Naive Newcomer: She doesn't really know a lot about soccer at first, so at times the others gotta explain stuff to her.
  • Plucky Girl: Nothing keeps her down for too long.
  • Shipper on DeckAfter Tsubasa rejects her very gently, she decides to support his love for Sanae. It's implied that deep down she always knew that Tsubasa was more likely to love Sanae than her.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: To Tsubasa, in the earlier series. The 2018 one has her a bit more boy-crazy, gushing over Misugi and Misaki briefly.
  • Trying Not to Cry: After Tsubasa rejects her.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Has all the signs of being this to Tsubasa.

Yukari Nishimoto[]

Yukari S2 (2018) 1

Sanae's other best friend, a calm young woman who's the most mature of the trio. She eventualy becomes Ishizaki's girlfriend.

  • Adapted Out: Like Kumi, she's not seen in the Road to 2002 anime and the Rise of New Champions game.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Implied with Ishizaki, in both the animated Holland Youth special and in WYC. And leading to an adorable Love Confession.. It's more clear in the 2018 series.
  • Beta Couple: She and Ishizaki, to Tsubasa and Sanae. Ishizaki even proposes to her in Next Dream!
  • Cool Big Sis: To Sanae and Kumi, being the more mature and levelheaded of the three girls.
  • Cute Sports Club Manager: The second of Sanae's assistants, and the more experienced and closest to Sanae of the two.
  • Demoted to Extra: Even more than Kumi, as she only appeared in one of the movies while Kumi had parts in at least two. But she also returned for the 2018 series after not showing up on Road to 2002 either (though an early scene included a tiny cameo by a girl who looks exactly like her)
  • Girlish Pigtails: Variation. She has them in the first anime series, but has a single Tomboyish Ponytail in the manga and the 2018 series.
  • Hollywood Homely: In a way. She's designed to have more modest looks than the very Moe Kumi and Sanae, and it shows very clearly in the 2018 series.
  • Hospital Hottie: She wants to be a nurse. She fails the college school tests, but starts working as a Cool Teacher in a kindergarten school instead.
  • Not So Above It All: She pokes Kumi about her flighty behavior in the 2018 series, but swoons over Misugi when she meets him.
  • Plucky Girl
  • Shipper on Deck: Moreso in the old anime than other media. In the 2023 series, when Kumi all but asks her what will she do about it, she explicitly says she won't step in.
  • Team Mom: Even more so than Sanae.
  • Tsundere: A Type B, to Ishizaki. Perfectly seen in one of her earlier 2018 scenes, where they scream at one another comically.

Yayoi Aoba[]

Yayoi

Once Tsubasa's borderline Only Friend, later Misugi's faithful companion and girlfriend.

  • Adaptation Dye Job: She's a redhead in the manga and original series, but has dark brown hair in the Road to 2002 series. Both J and the 2018 series give her light brown hair.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: In both the manga and J, she became the Musashi manager to thank Misugi for helping her out against bullies.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Tsubasa was her First Love, Misugi is her second one, and she met the two before she turned 12.
  • Cute Sports Club Manager: Not as much as the other girls, as she hangs around quite a bit with the Musashi Elementary team but apparently stops that in Junior High. Unless one counts the Road to 2002 series, which removed her friendship with Tsubasa but put much more emphasis on her manager role due to having the Musashi JHS out cut outta the story after their Nankatsu match.
  • Fatal Flaw: She can be very Innocently Insensitive. At times it's Played for Laughs (like when she's introduced as completely oblivious to Sanae's Territorial Smurfette deals in the first anime), but it's eventually played completely straight when she tells Tsubasa that Misugi has a weak heartand then begs him to let Misugi win the match, which makes Tsubasa hold back in their duel and infuriates Misugi when he finds out.
  • Heroic BSOD: In Rising Sun, poor Yayoi short-circuits badly (complete with Fainting) when Misugi collapses and almost dies in the match against Germany.. Fortunately, she recovers few after Misugi pretty much returns to life.
  • Official Couple: She and Misugi can be seen as a bit of a Beta Couple to Sanae and Tsubasa.
  • Only Friend: According to some manga side-stories, Yayoi and her older brother Hideto were the first friends Tsubasa ever made.
  • Stock Shoujo Bullying Tactics: A scene from J series states that, when Yayoi was the New Transfer Student in Musashi Elementary School, her classmates bullied her. When she had a near breakdown in public over someone messing up with her school things, Misugi stood up for her.
    • In a manga side story, when Yayoi transferred to Misugi's class she was set to have the seat right by his own. That made a bunch of girls very angry and they planned to bully her and force her switch seats with another, but the Genre Savvy Misugi soon told her to join the team half because they need an assistant, half so he can protect her from the bullies.
  • Team Mom
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: More or less.

Yoshiko Fujisawa[]

Yoshiko-0

One of the assistants for Furano Junior High, and Matsuyama's Love Interest.

  • Beta Couple: Matsuyama and Yoshiko's deals clearly run parallel to Tsubasa ands Sanae's own.
  • Character Development: Subtle, but still there. In the Road to 2002 manga, she's seen breaking through her Shrinking Violet shell and becoming more confident and even a bit more cheerful. And Dream Team shows that she has decided to become a flight attendant - and it's the only thing she'll put above her love for Matsuyama.
  • Chekhov's Ill Girl: In WYC, she gets hit by a car and Matsuyama stays by her bedside. Which is vital in the Sweden/Japan match, as he's got pent-up energy whereas the others are exhausted.
  • Cute Sports Club Manager: Of the Furano Junior High team.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Her hair is somewhat longer in WYC and Rising Sun.
  • Long-Distance Relationship: She and Matsuyama, in the end. Twice, actually - first in the original story (her family must move abroads), then in Dream Team (she wants to be a flight assistant so, despite loving Matsuyama, she turns down his marriage proposal so they settle in this.
  • Makiko Ohmoto: In Road to 2002.
  • Shrinking Violet: Downplayed, she's more quiet than actually timid.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: To a small degree, with Matsuyama.
  • Stepford Smiler: She hides her inner turmoil very well from Matsuyama and the team, only letting her mother and Machiko see how she's unhappy and depressed at the prospect of leaving Japan.
  • Team Mom
  • Trying Not to Cry: Towards the end, when she has to leave Japan and Matsuyama behind.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko

Machiko Machida[]

Machiko Machida S2 (2018) 1

The other Furano assistant and Yoshiko's closest friend.

Maki Akamine[]

Maki ep44 (J) 1

Hyuuga's Love Interest, a young lady from Okinawa who plays soft-ball and aspires to have her own career.

  • Adapted Out: Surprisingly, Maki does NOT show up in the Road to 2002 anime. Instead, Hyuuga develops the Raiju Shot on his own with a bit of advice from Coach Kira.
  • Indirect Kiss: By sharing with Hyûga a Coca-cola can (his favourite drink) in the World Youth Saga, after he has completed his Training From Hell in Okinawa and is about to go get back his place in the national team.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: She denies more vehemently than Hyûga does when teased about this, but Everyone Can See It.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Wants to have her own softball career and is very serious about it. And now she's very much in her way to get it - she's vital ion the USA vs Japan last match, and thanks to her the JPN team earns their gold medals!
  • Plucky Girl: She has her ups and downs like any girl, but does her best whenever she can.
  • Shorttank: Described as a massive and fiery tomboy, but she does wear dresses once in a while.
  • Tsundere: Type B. She's cute and cheerful and happy, but it's best not to press her buttons.
  • The Power of Love: She is an excellent softball player in her own right, but her Power Level in matches go Up to Eleven each time Hyûga cheers her. Conversely, the one time Hyûga didn't come to her match to support her, she lost.
  • Wakana Yamazaki: In the J series.

Munemasa Katagiri[]

Katagiri S2 (2018) 1

An old friend of Mikami and Gamo, who's a top executive of the Japan Football Association.

  • Big Brother Mentor
  • Calling the Old Man Out: In World Youth Cup. Katagiri hasn't spoken with his father for years, but he goes to him to ask his dad support for Japan's bid to host the WYC after the original host retires due to a civil war. Katagiri Sr. says he'll accept on one single condition: that if the bid fails, Katagiri will retire from anything soccer-like and work in the Family Business from then on... But Katagiri refuses because he's sure that Japan will win, and says he'll find other supporters. That softens up Katagiri Sr. enough to offer talking to other potential sponsors, and in exchange he only asks his son to visit his mother who really misses him.
  • The Consigliere - Guile Hero: Is the one handling things behind the scenes to help the Japanese Team coaches. And damn, he's good at it
  • Princely Young Man: Actually subverted. He is the son of an extremely rich family, but according to WYC he walked out on them because he chose soccer over working with his Fantasy-Forbidding Father.
  • Retired Badass: Due to losing his eye. After THAT happened, he couldn't play any longer but kept working behind the scenes.
  • The Smart Guy
  • Sunglasses At Night: To cover his scarred left eye.
  • Tall, Dark and Handsome
  • Three Amigos: Was this with Gamo and Mikami.

  • A Day in the Limelight: The Memories Spin-Off has a part dedicated to the Ozora family, and the first chapter is all about how Koudai and Natsuko met and fell in love. (And it also introduces Tsubasa's maternal grandparents, Hachigorou and Hana)
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: When Koudai was young, he did not have his moustache. It seems he only grew it when he married Natsuko.

  • Parents as People: Koudai works abroad as a ship captain, but does what he can to keep contact and is a genuinely good dad when around.

  • Strong Family Resemblance: Tsubasa has Natsuko's features and Koudai's black hair and grey eyes. As he grows up, tho, he resembles Koudai more - it's especially blatant when one sees the flashbacks with the younger Koudai, who's basically a shorter-haired and more muscled Tsubasa.
  • Team Mom: Natsuko.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Natsuko, with emphasis on maturity.

Azumi Hayakawa[]

Azumi hayakawa

A French-Japanese young girl who appears in the Shin part of Captain Tsubasa. She's good friends with Taro Misaki.

  • Advertised Extra: She shows up in the OP of the Shin OAV... and yet she doesn't really appear in the series itself.
  • Adapted Out: From the Road to 2002 anime as well. She returns only in the Dream Team games and 2023 series.
  • Expy: Of Sanae. Since she was both Older and Wiser and more feminine, Azumi was created to bring back a tomboy for the Shin CT part. Misaki even refers to her as "the French Sanae"
  • Hot-Blooded
  • Platonic Life Partners: With Misaki. Though the Dream Team games imply they may start getting romantically closer...
