Glammed up for the Grammys.[1]

Cquote2

Don't describe Britney Spears here! LEAVE HER ALONE!

Britney Jean Spears, (born 2nd December 1981) is a famous pop music recording artist, entertainer, piano player, guitar player, songwriter, fashion designer, author, occasional actor and video director who rose to fame in 1999 off of the success of her debut single "...Baby One More Time." She also had many immensely successful singles and iconic moments in her career. Known for her forward thinking and positive pop music.

A former member of the 90s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club, Britney was the first and the poster girl for the the late '90s wave of boy bands and female solo artists. Part of her rise came from the exploitation of her sexuality, as the seventeen year old Britney flaunted her lolita looks with school girl outfits and tight red leather catsuits, while still having an image of innocence. Her albums and singles sold millions, her videos gained constant rotation on MTV, she made numerous, well-received guest spots on Saturday Night Live as both host and musical guest, she did many iconic VMA performances, she had a hit movie (Crossroads) and received a Grammy nomination (for Best New Artist) and won a Grammy Award for "Toxic" in 2004, many sold out tours and platinum albums and top ten singles later...

The fairy tale couldn't last forever. Starting in 2004, Britney's personal life entered a downward spiral. She engaged in an impulse marriage to a childhood friend in Las Vegas that was quickly annulled. This was followed by a whirlwind romance to backup dancer Kevin Federline. The pairing produced two children, but only damaged Britney's career, as Federline's presence caused cracks to appear in Britney's carefully-crafted public persona as she began to act out in public. A Reality TV series in 2005 (Britney & Kevin: Chaotic, whose viewership started off strong but gradually declined over the show's run) only made the two more fodder for the tabloids, who subsequently began to draw their knives out at Britney. The singer became a victim of her own success. (Though she doesn't see herself as that at all, hates those terms)

Though she ultimately divorced Federline, the break-up culminated in a rather public mental breakdown that resulted in Britney shaving her head among various other unfortunate public incidents (such as a critically lambasted performance at the 2007 MTV Video Awards). This is explained further in her documentary For The Record. As well as her want to be understood, and people to express compassion towards her.

However, she has since recovered, following a court's placement of her in the conservatorship of her father and her lawyer, which is set to continue indefinitely. She continues to perform, and remains a pop cultural figure. To date, she has sold over 100 million records worldwide, and her latest albums, Circus and Femme Fatale, went to #1 on their first weeks of release. She also had one of the five biggest-selling concert tours of 2009. She has made an admirable comeback, with five number ones in four years and 6 number one albums.

She recently became engaged to her beau of over 2 years, Jason Trawick. The two will reportedly wed after she has settled all of her current legal battles.

In May 2012, it was announced that she, alongside Demi Lovato, would be joining the judging panel of the US version of The X Factor.

  • Stages (2002)
Britney Spears provides examples of the following tropes:
  • Absolute Cleavage: The white outfit in 3 and her Elvis outfit promo for Live In Las Vagas.
  • Adorkable: She's always been this.
  • After the End: "Till The World Ends".
  • Album Title Drop: The significant majority of her albums have these...
    • "Baby One More Time" and "Oops I Did It Again" in the title tracks.
    • "Wanna get In The Zone"" in "Me Against The Music".
    • In the Circus track on her sixth album. "All eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a Circus."
    • A track from her latest album Femme Fatale, titled "Big Fat Bass." A robotic voice can be heard saying "The Femme Fatale" at the end of the song.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Kevin Federline and Adnan aside, she sang of this in Toxic and Criminal.
  • Anti-Love Song: "Oops I Did It Again."
Cquote1

It may seem like a crush
Doesn't mean that I'm serious
I'm not that innocent

Cquote2
  • And Now for Something Completely Different: Her ventures into pop rock ("Don't Keep Me Waiting," "Rock Boy," "Rock Me In") and pure rock ("I Love Rock N' Roll"), and in a sense her ballads on her fourth album ("Everytime" and "Shadow"). Her song "He About To Lose Me" could fall into this category as well. Her live rock cover of "You Oughta Know" is this in the Circus tour. "Why Should I Be Sad" at the end of Blackout.
  • Author Vocabulary Calendar / Verbal Tic / Lyrical Tic / Arc Words: You'd be amazed at how often she says "crazy" and "baby".
  • Acclaimed Flop: Blackout was ignored due to the situations and problems of the time but its often ear marked as one of the albums which changed music into it's currant state (Coming to biggest prominence 2009-2012, with it's electronic party elements everywhere, Dub step, playing with vocals through vocoders, vocal duets, and dark dance songs, among others)
  • Bald of Awesome: Famously in 2007. All jokes aside, she pulled off the look surprisingly well.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Especially in her earlier releases.
  • Be Yourself: Arguably her overall message.
    • "Bottom line: If you love yourself, it will all work out."
    • "I know not everyone will like me, but this is who I am so if you don't like it, tough!"
    • "I looked up to people, but I never wanted to be them. I always had my own identity."
Cquote1

"What you see is what you get
This is me, hey you
If you want me, don't forget
You should take me as I am
'Cause I can promise you
Baby, What U See Is What U Get"

Cquote2
Cquote1

"Baby I'm a freak and I don't really give a damn"
"Walk a mile in my shoes, do me right or I'm through"

Cquote2
    • "Go with your heart, follow your instincts, don't try to control it, let it kind of control you"
    • The message and theme of Oops!...I Did It Again.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:On December 2, 2010, after yet another set of rumors involving Britney Spears, this time from Star magazine (with input by her first husband for two days Jason Alexander (no, not that one), about her boyfriend allegedly physically abusing her and her keeping silent to the police on the matter, Britney personally makes five posts on her Twitter account. The first two for congratulating her fans for wishing her a happy 29th birthday, the next one announcing that the release date of her new album will be in March 2011, the fourth one to announce she will be enjoying a romantic vacation for the weekend, and the last one..., well, you can see it for yourself. Beware the Nice Ones, indeed.
  • Bishoujo: {Drop Dead} Beautiful.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: She plays all three in her videos for "Toxic" and "Womanizer".
  • Brown Eyes: She has a personable and trustworthy set of these.
  • Breakup Breakout: Was in a band called Innocense for all of five seconds before deciding to go solo and getting signed to Jive.
  • Break Up Song: "Baby One More Time", "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart", "Baby Boy", "Why Should I Be Sad", "Dramatic", "Shattered Glass", 'Mannequin", "Toy Soldier", "Where Are You Now", "Shadow", "Everytime", "Womanizer", "I Run Away" and more...
  • Break the Cutie: Most of her career she's been hated and made to break, but 03-08 were the worst with her relationship with the media.
  • Brevity Is Wit: Her statements at The X Factor have had this element to them.
    • Additionally the times when she does think hard about what she wants to say she can be make them quite witty and quick.
  • British Accent: Played for laughs in Hold it Against Me during the musical break section of the song.
    • Played for drama/pain during her breakdown when she decided to pretend to British to get away from the crap around her during her break down
  • Buxom Is Better: Britney was always a tad bit controversial even back in her "glory years," in which detractors claimed that she was only famous because she is a well-endowed, "pretty" young woman rather than because of any talent she may have as a musician. (But then again any musician who is known for sex appeal has been accused of this.) But over the course of the 2000s, she became a highly controversial figure for a different reason and some people kind of miss the days when her sex appeal was the only reason she was the least bit controversial.
  • Call Back: One notable lyrical moment is the song "Stronger," where she sings "My loneliness ain't killing me no more," a reference to "Baby One More Time."
    • Also done in the song "Inside Out." She references two of her earliest hits..."...Baby One More Time" ("Hit me one more time, it's so amazing") and "(You Drive Me) Crazy" ("You're the only one who ever drove me crazy, 'cause you know me inside out").
    • Called "Womanizer", Toxic part 2 outright in the behind the scenes of that music video.
    • "yeah I did, Did it again" was delicately slipped into "Mannequin".
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': She rarely, if ever, bags out her peers and contemporaries; the few times she has, years ago, people held it against her, for a total of one time talking smack back to the people who constantly slag her off and drag her down. She is The Stoic of the pop world the rest of the time.
    • This even applies to her "Golden" Years where she blocked from the radios for no real reason.
    • She is (was) knocked for being a bad role model even though if anything she is an overachiever (then) and a survivor (now). Nothing less then an Iron Woobie.[2]
  • Career Resurrection: She basically came back from the dead.
  • Catholic School Girls Rule: "Baby One More Time". Oh baby baby...
  • Cash Cow Franchise: One of the richest musicians from 1999-2010. One of the top 3 most influential musicians of 2010. One of the richest musicians of 2009, 2010 and 2011.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Topic of "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know"
  • Censor Steam: In the edited version of the "Womanizer" video. She appears naked in a sauna covering her breasts with her hands and with her genitals out of view of the camera, but this was still too racy for some airings, so the edited version has steam also covering her.
  • Celebrity Endorsement: Did a couple of memorable Pepsi Endorsements, was the face of Candies for two years, (They helped her with her Circus come back tour) and of cause endorses and helps create her own perfume and their bottles.
    • Also joined The X Factor which is a major endorsement for them and has already gotten them to trend on Twitter. The X Factor and Pepsi endorse one another soo.
  • Concept Album: Surprisingly apparent if you think about her albums; they all tell a story...
    • Baby is about summer romances and youthful love, Oops is about being yourself and loved as yourself, Britney is about growing up and into your sexuality, In The Zone is about sexuality and exploring it, Blackout is about forgetting upsets and having a good time, Circus is a mix tape of a circus of sounds and Femme Fatale is about bad relationships and clubbing.
  • Creator Breakdown: From late 2006 to early 2008, until she started focusing on her job again seriously. Since then she's been happy doing what she loves without the drama and chaos of her former life.
    • Narrowly averted with the cancelling of both projects "Shock Your Mind" (Which later turned into her Self-Titled Album in 2001) and "The Original Doll" (Which became Blackout in 2007).
  • Clothes Make the Legend: The tied up School Shirt, the red jump suit in Oops and her belly baring outfits in the early 00's.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Her persona on The X Factor.
  • Crossover: Meeting Austin Powers in the "Boys" video.
  • Combat Stilettos: When fighting her doppelganger in the "Hold It Against Me" music video.
  • Cover Version: "The Beat Goes On", "Satisfaction", "I Love Rock N Roll", and "My Perogative", to name a few.
    • A lesser known cover would be "Out From Under," which was originally on a Bratz soundtrack.
    • She recently covered Madonna's "Burning Up" for the Femme Fatale tour.
    • She covered "You Oughta Know" on her The Circus Tour.
    • She did a Madonna / Janet Jackson cover medley in her debut tour.
    • She also covered Walk This Way with Nsync at the superbowl...
  • Christmas Songs: She had one written for her called "My Only Wish (This Year)."
  • Child Prodigy: Award winning dancer since 3, singing since at least 5, worked for Disney in a variety show when she was a kid, used to have an incredibly dark low voice for a child, which she got awards for, used to be a successful gymnast, and went to a performance arts school when she was a pre-teen.
  • A Date with Rosie Palms: "Touch Of My Hand."
    • "Phonography," "Don't Hang Up" and "I Wanna Go" also apply.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Lynne, her mother, wrote a book; Through The Storm released in 2008, which basically took the story they told in 2000, with Heart To Heart, and turned it on it's head, with alcoholics, money problems, her father's business issues and numerous other indications/incidents and family reasons for her to have such a big breakdown in 2004-2008, outside the immense career pressure she was enduring and any other broken dreams she had which caused her to have her breakdown.
  • The Determinator: When Britney wants a tour she makes a tour happen (Seen in HOB tour), when she wants to give her fans things, they get things (Blackout album/Someday EP, the various Britmas's her fans have, 05-07), when she wants to change the direction of music she does so (Oops to present), when she wants to feature in a TV show she does (her featuring on Glee, How I Met Your Mother and The Simpsons were basically her idea), wanted to do The X Factor and sought Simon Cowell out for the opportunity, wanted to work with Rihanna or Madonna so then she does, She decided she wanted to do a film and then went ahead and did it, and she kicked out her family because she wanted to focus on her own children and turned it all around in due course after her breakdown. She is extremely determined.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: A "Criminal."
  • Dream Team: Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Yin Yang Twins, Madonna, N*Sync, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Max Martin, Dr. Luke, will.i.am, Bloodshy & Avant, Rihanna, Elizabeth Arden, and many many more.
  • Driven to Suicide: In the cancelled ideas for Everytime and Gimme More videos.
  • Downer Ending: "Why Should I Be Sad?" on Blackout and "Everytime" on In the Zone.
  • Doing It for the Art: Has passed into this working so hard on her career after being such an Iron Woobie all the time. She does it for her fans, and for the show and for the music. She can't quit.
  • Does Not Like Shoes: "Cannot record with my shoes on".
  • Epic Riff: Toxic, one of the reasons it was a hit.
    • ...Baby," "Oops!," "Gimme More," "Hold It Against Me," "I Wanna Go," and "Till The World Ends."
  • Epic Rocking: "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" is longer then any of her other songs.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: She has her fair share of female fans who would turn for her in a pin drop.
  • Ethical Slut: "When I Say So" and most of the "In The Zone" album.
  • Expy: Lately, in her music videos, Britney isn't Britney, she's Aeon Flux, complete with her own Trevor Goodchild. Three instances: "Toxic", "Womanizer", and "Break The Ice".
  • Executive Meddling: Britney was forced to change her video "Everytime" when record label executives found out that she wanted to do a video where she kills herself. So, instead of killing herself, she passes out and drowns due to a bump on the head, only to wake up at the end of the video.
    • The Britney album was originally supposed to be titled Shock Your Mind and was supposed to have much edgier, darker songs...she actually had co-written all but one of the tracks for the album. The label was displeased, though, and long-time producer Max Martin was called in to sweeten the sound. Britney was displeased with the meddling, though, and the two clashed in the studio, which ultimately ended in the two not working together for several years.
    • They meddled yet AGAIN by completely shelving the unreleased album The Original Doll. Britney angered her label by going on radio station KIIS-FM and playing a rough draft of the lead single for the album, "Mona Lisa," and as a result the plug was pulled completely on the project. Many believe that the label simply didn't think the album was commercial enough to sell well, which was the true reason for the album being shelved.
  • Fan Service: Many of her videos and outfits.
  • Fan Nickname: Godney, Fierceney, Walkney, Empowerney, Tourney, Oopsney, Blackoutney, Momney, Safeney, Socialney, Breakdownney and so so SOOO many more it can not be understated!
  • Fan Girl: Has Fan Girl's in Madonna, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, Pixie Lott, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, and Selena Gomez amongst others.
  • Feather Boa Constrictor: Her famous and infamous Slave 4 U VMA's 2001 performance.
  • Former Child Star: Former Mouseketeer.
  • Follow Your Heart: To go with her Be Yourself message, she also said:
    • "Go with your heart, follow your instincts, don't try to control it, let it kind of control you"
    • "Brave New Girl", "Stronger", "I Wanna Go", "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" would also, all fit into the criteria.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: "Love me, hate me, say what you want about me but all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to if you seek Amy." Say those last four words out loud. Then put them into context with the rest of the song. The album it was on escaped the Parental Advisory label, but it didn't get past the radar the second time four months later, when she released it as a single (not only was it heavily censored, but The BBC and likely many other broadcasters insisted on just calling it "Amy").
Cquote1

"Do me right or I'm through."

Cquote2
    • Her Third and fourth album get alot of sexual references and darker relationship situations part radars of people who had not experienced those things yet.
  • Genre Roulette: Ever since her third album she's been mixing up her sounds a lot.
    • To be exact she's toyed with genres such as bubblegum pop, dance-pop, R&B, trip-hop, electronica, rock, dubstep, synthpop, and new wave.
    • Her most roulette like album's are In The Zone and Circus.
  • Genre Shift: While she has been mixing up her sound, there does seem to be a general drift in one direction. Ever since she got the Grammy for "Toxic" (for Best Dance Recording) she's produced fewer ballads, and had begun to experiment with a lot of rhythm-based genres, like Electronica, Dubstep, and Trip-Hop. She seemed to have found her niche in the umbrella of "Dance Music," and all the sub-genres that envelops.
  • Genius Ditz: Offstage she can be flaky and her behavior weird, but during the glory years she was an great performer and the most successful pop star of that time.
  • Gem-Encrusted: At her Femme Fatale Tour she wore an outfit which was some super short jeans and a shirt which was covered in shiny things, her outfits for HOB tour used this trope and she does use it a lot when appropriate since the beginning of her career.
  • Girlish Pigtails: In the "Baby One More Time" video.
  • Girl-On-Girl Is Hot: Her kiss with Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.
    • Played with as Lady Gaga's character at the VMA's 2011.
  • Godiva Hair: While she's in the bath in the "Everytime" video.
  • Good Bad Girl: Plays into and with this, read Madonna-Whore Complex for more. Starting in at least 2002.
  • Greatest Hits Album: Two, Greatest Hits: My Perogative 98-04 and The Singles Collection.
  • Hand or Object Underwear: The "Womanizer" video has her completely naked in a sauna covering her breasts with her hands, and the "Toxic" video has her covering her breasts with diamonds.
  • Hair of Gold: Especially in her earlier years
  • Hollywood Pudgy: The accusations of being fat during her performance at the 2007 Video Music Awards. Ridiculous when compared to people who are actually overweight.
    • It's actually incredible how good she looks at that point, as many women would kill to have a body like that after giving birth (twice).
    • She also came in for some of this when she stood next to a seemingly much slighter Christina Aguilera at the 2000 MTV awards. It wasn't that Britney was pudgy, just that Christina is extremely petite and the actually average-heighted Britney looked odd beside her.
  • Hollywood Spelling: Those with the more traditional spelling of "Brittany" are probably annoyed by how she spells her name.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Been walking this path for awhile now. With very successive era starting with Oops and up to Femme Fatale she has gotten sexier and hotter.
    • Public opinion of her hotness was at a low during the Blackout era but she's back to being viewed as hot since mid-to-late 2008.
  • Human Aliens: in the music video for "Oops!...I Did It again," she's the queen of Mars.
    • Recently lampshaded in the video for "Hold It Against Me." Britney pokes fun at a rumor from early in her career that she was an alien by crash landing to Earth as a pop star who shortly after takes the world by storm at the beginning of the video.
  • Heartbeat Soundtrack: Used at the end of, oddly enough, Heart!
  • Important Haircut: Shaving her head in 2007 just before releasing one of her best, most acclaimed albums.
  • Intercourse with You: So many of her songs...Especially on In The Zone.
    • Pretty much every song on Femme Fatale features this trope in full effect.
  • Insult Backfire: One of the commonest insults about Crossroads which was she was playing herself. A very intelligent, socially outcast nerd, with morals and a dad who cares for her and mommy issues.
  • Kaleidoscope Hair: She has dyed her hair many colors over the years, though blonde has always been predominant.
  • Lampshade Hanging: A few examples of this...
    • "Womanizer" has a conspicuous shot of a Nokia cell phone near the start. One of the appointments just visible in the frame is about a product placement meeting.
    • The start of the video for "If U Seek Amy" spells out the "hidden" message in the lyrics very blatantly before the song begins.
    • "Piece Of Me" is one long lamp shade hanging regarding her relationship with the press.
    • In the video for "Hold It Against Me" Britney pokes fun at a rumor from early in her career that she was an alien by crash landing to Earth as a pop star who shortly after takes the world by storm at the beginning of the video.
    • The Soprano and Gravel elements "Big Fat Bass (Feat. will.i.am)" is lampshaded with the lyric: "I can be the treble, you can be the bass".
    • Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) video has a woman obviously from a radio news channel saying how "Britney shows up at awards show half naked again, this annoys Moral Guardians Everywhere".
  • Lyrical Dissonance: "Lucky" is a perky, symphonic pop song about a celebrity who hates their life and feels that they are alone, despite how many people surround them day to day.
Cquote1

"If there's nothing missing in my life, Then why do these tears come at night?"

Cquote2
  • Latex Space Suit: For "Oops!...I Did It Again."
  • Les Yay: Her totally spontaneous kiss with Madonna onstage.
  • Long Title: "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart", "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", "Born To Make You Happy", "Why Should I Be Sad", "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", "That's Where You Take Me", "What It's Like to be Me", "Don't Go Knockin' On My Door", "Oops! I Did It Again" in relation to all of her other titles.
  • Madonna-Whore Complex: Discussed in the notes in her first greatest hits collection..
Cquote1

"...is she a good girl doing bad things,
or a bad girl doing good things?
Either way we are engaged."

Cquote2
  • Meganekko: While in disguise as a Sexy Secretary in the "Womanizer" video.
  • Medley: She's done about 7 tours, medley's have happened the most memorable ones are her DWAD medley of her hits (Sometimes/Born To Make You Happy/Lucky) and her Femme Fatale medley (Baby One More Time/Her Verse in S&M)
  • Mood Whiplash: The penultimate track of In The Zone is the upbeat, girl-powerish "Brave New Girl," which segues into "Everytime", one of the most Tear Jerker songs Britney ever recorded.
    • "For The Record" shot of an paparazi falling in the bushes, Britney crying thinking about the divorce, shot of her doing what she loves, her then saying she felt trapped, a couple of strong statements, a argument over how much control she has over her life and repeat..
  • Moral Guardians: She did manage to anger some of them in her early years, with the claims that she presented inappropriate sexual imagery to her younger female fans and especially when she posed for a very provocative photo shoot for "Rolling Stone" magazine in 1999 when she was still under 18.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Must Have Caffeine: Noted in both "Live and More!" and "Behind The Scenes of The Toxic Video" she must have caffein every morning due to her crazy working hours. (Mocha by the way)
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: While Britney has largely shied away from talking about politics, during an interview for MTV, Britney stated her political beliefs: that she had blind, unwavering support and trust for then-president George W. Bush regarding the Iraq War, as well as stating her belief that Americans should blindly trust and support their President no matter what.
    • She did, however, lampshade this when she guest-starred on Will and Grace as a maniacally right-wing pop star who takes over Jack's gay network--only to reveal that she's actually a hardcore lesbian.
  • Mind Screw: In Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) video it opens with a picture of her dancing in the rain in the outfit she's wearing at night (Being commented on by the media), this makes her want to go out and dance in the rain in the outfit she's wearing in the day, the video ends on the same video, of her, in the same outfit, in the rain, dancing, goes straight back to the same news anchor saying the same thing, except she's no longer there...
  • MTV: A major contributor to her success.
  • Nice Girl: One unarguable part of her persona, very very few negative anecdotes, remembers fans after concerts, follows them on twitter, tweets them on occasion, always opens up to them, these days she says she does her albums for her fans and therefore her tours are for her supporters, P!nk, Ke$ha, Hilary Duff, Mary J Blige, All her producers and collaborators, and almost everyone who's ever met her says she is "Sweet".
  • Nostalgia Filter: In regard to her fans. If it is older it is better by default, even if it's just the same thing or she's just a little older then she was back then. It's actually quite confusing...
    • These days the overall opinion is that her music has gotten better...Femme Fatale has earned her some of the best reviews of her career. The performances leave something to be desired with many of her fans though, although the general consensus is that she is steadily improving.
  • Nostalgic Music Box: Used in her unreleased track "Baby Boy."
  • Non-Appearing Title: "Brave New Girl" and "The Hook Up" don't have the titles as they are titled in the song. Brave Girl is said in Brave New Girl and Hook Up is said in The Hook Up.
  • Never Live It Down: Her shaved head, her 48 hour marriage, K-Fed, her supposed "Weight gain".
  • Old Shame: Sort of. She has said outright she thinks all her past music fucking rocks...but she has said that of all the fashions she's worn, the red Latex Space Suit from "Oops!...I Did It Again" is the one thing she'd never wear again, saying it was hot, uncomfortable, and it felt like wearing a balloon.
  • Obsession Song: "Radar" has its creepy moments.....
Cquote1

Da-da-da-da-da-da-dadadadadadada.
I got my eye on you... and I can't let you get away...

  • Obligatory Bondage Song: Lace And Leather is this.
    • Her voice featuring on a remix of "S&M" by Rihanna too.
    • "Selfish" could be interpreted this way.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: It was said frequently to be really smart in school, co wrote/co produced/co-casted her movie, her co writers and collaborators vouch for her involvement in her music, she went to a performance school in her childhood, learnt a new way to sing in two years after singing soulfully her whole life, she picked up the guitar and the piano extremely quickly and generally has an incredible ear, for a good song which is her ultimate job and what works in music and what doesn't. In conclusion, she doesn't take credit, but she should be credited for her own success.
    • Of cause their is a lot of Fan Dumb and Hate Dumb about this, despite all the evidence proving this to be true. If she was simply a puppet the "horrible secret" would've been uncovered years ago...
    • In her own words:
Cquote1

Because my music - especially my live stuff - is very showy, a lot of people don't respect it as art. Because I'm young, soft-spoken and nice to people, they go ahead and assume things. But everything I have ever done - even my movie - I helped to write. I'm the complete opposite of a puppet." - Britney Spears

She has since made a real comeback in regards to many opinions of her by scoring 5 number ones in America alone, headlining two successful worldwide tour and serving as the spokes girl for the Candie's clothing line. • Promoted Fanboy: Was a huge Madonna fan growing up, went onto work with Madonna on Me Against The Music. After performing with her at the VMA's, kissing her for fun live, featuring on her tour, performing live with her alot relatively. Madonna has also said some rather positive statements about Britney and how she see's herself in Britney.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: I'm! Not! That! Innocent!

    • "Where Are You Now" on Oops, "Everytime" / "Shadow" during In The Zone, "Why Should I Be Sad" at the end of Blackout, "Unusual You" / "Out From Under / "Blur" / "My Baby" on Circus and "Trip To Your Heart" on Femme Fatale
  • Shout-Out: The last shot of her "I Wanna Go" video is a shout out to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video.

    • The video of "Criminal" feels reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, complete with the police trying to kill them with machine guns.
  • Smarter Than You Look: She is noted by all of her producers as having a say in her songs and how they are executed. Also she picks the songs which go on her albums. She also has conceived the idea/plot for several of her music videos, including "...Baby One More Time," "Womanizer," and "Everytime." She has a lot more say in her career than most of her naysayers are willing to admit. She even picked "Womanizer," "Toxic," "Me Against The Music," and "I'm A Slave 4 U" as singles against her label's wishes. She also co wrote, idealized, co casted and picked the director for her 2002 movie Crossroads.

Cquote2
  • Stage Mom: Lynn Spears encouraged her and her sister to get into show business. WHOOPS! Now she suggests that other moms don't encourage their kids to do it in her latest Cosmopolitan interview.
    • It also becomes either a Funny Aneurysm Moment or Hilarious in Hindsight when you remember at one point, she was approached to write a parenting book.
    • Britney herself has said she will refrain from allowing her kids to be stage mothered into the industry. She said she'd lock them up if they even considered it.
      • Averted in that Britney has recently made statements in interviews that if show business is what her children want to do, she'll fully support them every step of the way.
  • The Stoic: Refuses to get into feuds, even though it seems most of her contemporaries have something to say about her...Music/LadyGaga, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera,Ke$ha, and Rihanna have all made direct or indirect comments regarding Britney in an insulting or rude manner at one point or another, and those are just her contemporaries. She has never said anything rude about or to anyone except during the In The Zone era, after being provoked for at least five years prior. Most of the time she keeps her head down and does her own thing.
  • Strictly Formula: Her first two albums were this so much they border on Extruded Music Product. Both followed a pattern of singles consisting of the title track, ("...Baby One More Time," "Oops!... I Did It Again") a mid-tempo song ("Sometimes," "Lucky") another up-tempo song with rock and dance flairs ("Crazy," "Stronger"), and a slow syrupy ballad ("From the Bottom of My Broken Heart," "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know.") [3]
  • Studio Chatter: "Is this thing on?" and "Can you turn it up?" on "I Love Rock N' Roll" and "Don't Keep Me Waiting" respectively.
  • Stepford Smiler: Subject of "Lucky" Type A and Type B.
  • Surreal Music Video: "Hold It Against Me," so very much. "Boys" also is abit trippy.
  • Silly Love Songs: Recent songs such as "Trip To Your Heart," "Heaven On Earth" and "Unusual You"...and several songs from her first and third albums in particular.
  • Signature Song: at this stage it's "...Baby", "Oops", "Gimme More", "Womanizer", "Till The World Ends" and "Toxic"
  • Singer Namedrop: In "Gimme More", "Intimidated" and "When I Say So".
  • Soprano and Gravel: While will.i.am's voice isn't exceptionally deep or gravelly, this happened with "Big Fat Bass." It's also something of a lampshade of this as well, with the lyric "I can be the treble; baby, you can be the bass."
    • Get Naked (I Got A Plan) has Cote "The Author" Ellis singing the bass part.
  • Take That: Has done two unreleased songs about how much crap Justin Timberlake gave her after he was done with her and sold her out to the media. The songs are called "Dramatic" and "Guilty." She implied that he was a momma's boy who placed her very low on his list of priorities and wasn't there for her and then subsequently freaked out when she actually did something about it and dumped him.
    • There was another Take That that never came to be. Songwriter Cathy Dennis wrote a song for Britney after hearing Justin's Take That song "Cry Me A River" and designed it to be her rebuttal. The song was called "Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex," but Britney decided not to record the song. The song was then given to British singer Rachel Stevens, and it became one of her biggest hits.
    • The new Leak "Rock Star" may have been aimed at Fred Durst after he went after her in "Just Drop Dead".
    • "Mannequin" outright states that a guy, maybe even Justin Timberlake should "cry cry cry, again-gain gain, my face like a mannequin" referring to him constantly singing about her in his songs after they broke up mutually.
  • Take That, Critics!: She's not afraid to give it like she gets it, especially from her third album (Overprotected), her SNL specials, her cameos(Will and Grace) and beyond, for example Piece Of Me directly confronts how perverted paparazzi's have been towards her since the start and If You Seek Amy on Femme Fatale Tour has a follow on from that concept.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: And how, especially in the media! Australian media loathes her success.
  • Teen Idol: She was one in her early years, hitting it big with "...Baby, One More Time" at age 16.
  • There Are Two Kinds of People in the World: "Circus."
Cquote1

There's only two types of people in the world
The ones that entertain, and the ones that observe
There's only two types of guys out there
Ones that can hang with me, and ones that are scared

Cquote2
Cquote1

I may have made it rain
Please forgive me
My weakness caused you pain
And this song is my sorry

Cquote2
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch: "Gimme More." It's BRITNEY bitch...
  • Title-Only Chorus: "Gimme More."
  • Title Track: Oops I Did It Again, Circus
  • Three-Way Sex: The focus of the song "3."
  • Twisted Knee Collapse: She takes this position, albeit with head up and a brilliant smile, on the cover of ...Baby One More Time.
  • Twitter: She is one of the most followed celebrities on the social site, 13 million+ strong.
  • Unknown Rival: Known throughout the pop world for never responding to put downs and just keeping her head down while other people will openly talk trash about her. Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga are particular unknown rivals. She just doesn't care for putting down her peers.
  • Updated Rerelease: Usually tries to refrain from doing this, with the exception of "Britney" which was re-released in Australia/Oceania with an extended album (17 tracks) and a bonus dvd.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know is set on a beach, with a guy walking around all muscle and shirtless.
  • Woman Scorned: "Toxic" and "Womanizer."
    • "Dramatic" and "Guilty" would also count.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • "The Original Doll", a jazz rock acoustic singer/songwriter record was cancelled by the recording company. Had it come to be she might've become more respected in the general public and it could have averted her break down at least somewhat.
    • Doing "Telephone: with Lady Gaga and releasing it either as a duet or on her own.
    • The original idea for "Britney" was to be an album called "Shock Your Mind" with more grown up and personal lyrics. This was halted by her recording company who felt Max Martin was needed for at least one more album.
    • "Everytime" original video
    • "Dramatic" and "Guilty" getting released would've told her side of the story instead of letting Justin Timberlake hold a pity party for himself. Also the rampant lie that "Everytime" is about him despite the fact she said it was a general heart break song written by friends.
    • Original "Gimme More" video.
    • "Circus" the album getting a song from "Circus: the album as the last single instead of "Radar". Maybe even "Unusual You" a fan favorite.
    • Was supposed to play an heiress who shoots her philandering husband in Chicago.
  • What Did I Do Last Night??: "Blur" and "Early Mornin'"
  • Will Not Be a Victim: The Theme and verbalized outright in her "For the Record" rockumentary.
  • The Woobie: Given how hellish the last decade has been for her and her reputation as being very sweet and kind, its not surprising that many fans just want to hug her and tell her "It'll all be okay".
    • She becomes an Iron Woobie when you remember she just cannot quit her job and is the driving force behind her own comeback and her Determinator tendency's.
  • Your Cheating Heart: "He About To Lose Me" to tear jerking affect.
    • "Womanizer" and "Shattered Glass" also applies.
