You know it's wind because it's green.

Cquote1

"Long ago, a storm was heading toward the city of Quin'lat. The people sought protection within the walls, all except one man who remained outside. I went to him and asked what he was doing. 'I am not afraid,' he said. 'I will not hide my face behind stone and mortar. I will stand before the wind and make it respect me.' I honored his choice and went inside. The next day, the storm came; and the man was killed. The wind does not respect a fool."

Cquote2

This is another part of the Elemental Powers, mainly dealing with wind. It doesn't always mean Razor Wind, but includes the power to manipulate winds, such as blowing the enemy away, creating tornadoes, or used as a free Flight power. Any character who uses this is almost guaranteed to land in the role of a Fragile Speedster. Sometimes, this power is a natural extension for those with Super Speed, usually running around in circles very quickly to create a tornado.

May overlap with (or be the in-universe justification of) sound powers and deadly music. Often green. Wind from Beneath My Wings is a Sub-Trope.

Also, compare Everything's Better with Spinning

Not to be confused with Blown Across the Room.

Examples of Blow You Away include:

Anime and Manga[]

  • Temari of Naruto, as well as Asuma and Naruto himself, though they focus more on the Razor Wind aspect. Also, Danzo, who uses wind to create vacuums.
  • Fuu Hououji, Magic Knight of Wind from Magic Knight Rayearth.
  • Fuuko Kirisawa from Flame of Recca, using the wind Madogu Fuujin.
  • Fuusuke of Ninku is the captain of all wind-using ninja despite only being 12.
  • The Big Bad of Bleach's Bount arc had wind-based powers, up to and including a wind drill sword.
    • Also, Kensei from the Vizard. It is interesting to note that his release command is "Futtobase", or "Blow it away"
    • Senna from Bleach: Memories of Nobody has a wind type Zanpakuto named Mirokumaru which can control wind and create tornados. She even rides on top of a tornado at one point.
    • In his Resurrección form, Privaron Espada 103, Dordonii Alessandro Del Socacchio, can release tornadoes/cyclones from his legs.
    • Kyoraku Shunsui arguably has wind and shadow based abilities, but his gimmick isn't the element he wields, but their...ahem...unusual form: they are based on traditional children's games.
  • Yaiba's Big Bad, Onimaru, wields the power of the Fujin Katana, which allows him to use tornadoes, Razor Wind, and mighty gusts of wind. Later, Yaiba himself gain this power.
  • The Windy card of Cardcaptor Sakura. By virtue of being the first card introduced and a powerful one to boot, it is essentially her signature card.
  • Phoenix Ikki from Saint Seiya can create small tornadoes...on fire.
    • His brother, Andromeda Shun, has more traditional wind powers, but he mostly uses his trusty chains in battle.
  • Haruka, aka Sailor Uranus of Sailor Moon, though, since her attack is named "World Shaking", a lot of people mistake her powers for earth.
  • Limdo/Uruki from Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden is known as the "Merciless Wind Slasher". Guess what his signature power is. However, don't piss him off: after suffering a Heroic BSOD when his bodyguard and lifelong companion Soren died in a Heroic Sacrifice, he turns himself into a friggin' tornado.
  • Technically, anyone with any skill in Air Gear since all power is based on wind, but mainly Ikki, Ringo, Agito, and Sora and Nike, after the former's Heel Face Turn.
  • Jin of Yu Yu Hakusho.
  • Daimos has the attack 'Double Blizzard'. Despite the name, it's a pair of tornadoes, not a pair of freezing blizzards.
  • Combattler V's Super Electro Magnetic Whirlwind.
  • Midori Sugiura's CHILD Gakutenou in the My-HiME anime (and Akane's in the manga).
  • Cologne in Ranma ½ teaches Ranma the Hiryu Shoten Ha (aka the Heaven Blast of the Dragon), a technique where a heated battle aura and an icy unemotional battle aura collide to produce a whirlwind.
  • Hayate from Prétear, the Leafe Knight of Wind.
  • Koushirou Chikuma from Basilisk.
  • Dark Action Girl Kagura from Inuyasha. So very much Razor Wind.
    • Not to mention the titular character's Wind Scar.
  • Seiichirou Aoki and Daisuke Saiki from X 1999
  • Negi of Mahou Sensei Negima originally specialized in wind-based spells, though later he seemed to prefer lightning.
  • Eligor from Fairy Tail can create a wall of wind that can trap enemies and even make an armor out of the wind.
    • Also, Wendy, who is the adopted daughter of the Wind Dragon and, as such, is a Wind Dragon Slayer. She's focused more on buffs and healing, but the few offensive abilities she's shown certainly fit this trope.
  • Belldandy in Ah! My Goddess.
  • Girouette (or Juliet, as spelled in Del Rey translation) from Sugar Sugar Rune.
  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha has the spell Barrel Shot, which fires a burst of pressurized air at the target that deals no damage, but paralyzes them as a prelude for Excelion Buster.
  • This forms a major point in Windy Tales.
  • Kazuma Yagami from Kaze no Stigma is an incredibly powerful wind mage, partially (but not entirely) because he's one of the legendary Contractors who's formed a pact with the elemental god of wind. To put that in perspective, the members of the Kannagi Clan, including his cousin, Ayano Kannagi, are highly skilled users of fire magic because their distant ancestor was a Contractor with the elemental god of fire.
  • The Ougi clan, and especially it's successor, Ougi Shichirou, from Kekkaishi: Flight - check, Razor Wind - check, creating giant tornados - check, and once, he reduced a small shrine to dust in an instant using his wind powers.
  • Erik the Filler villain from One Piece can grow claws and create tornadoes with them.
    • Actually, that falls strictly under Razor Wind; the Devil Fruit he ate is the Kama Kama no Mi, or Sickle-Sickle Fruit, which lets him create wind as sharp as swords.
    • Played straight with Franky, who can use his Cyborg enhancements to fire wind with the force of a cannonball.
    • It speculated by fans that Dragon has an ability connected with controlling wind or weather. When he rescues Luffy in Loguetown he is accompanied by a strong storm that saves his son from Buggy and helps Straw Hats escape. Wind blows away flames, opening a path to his ship for survivors from the Gray Terminal as well.
  • Hayate the Combat Butler's 'ultimate' attack doesn't quite fit this trope, but it creates a gust of wind below him (those with skirts be warned) to propel him into the air for a powered punch.
  • Tabitha (or better said, Princess Charlotte Heléne de Orléans) from Zero no Tsukaima.
  • One of the lewd Blue Gaurdians from Rave Master. Power Perversion Potential ensues.
  • Hades Project Zeorymer: Lanster of the Wind.
  • Takeda Shingen of Sengoku Basara is so strong, a strong enough swing from his big freaking ax has enough force to summon a giant, mook-destroying tornado on the battlefield.
  • Vento of the Front in A Certain Magical Index has the power over wind among God's Right Seat, and her ability, God's Divine Punishment, deprives anyone who is hostile towards her of oxygen.
  • In Inukami!, Kaoru's specialty is wind magic. Though, oddly, he invokes the 'White Mountain God' to do it.
  • In Yes! Pretty Cure 5, this is Milky Rose's element of choice.
  • In My Happy Marriage, the Saimori family's signature Gift is supposed to be this (alongside Seers-like powers). The patriarch, Shinichi, is skilled enough at it to use wind currents as protective barriers.

Comic Books[]

  • Storm from X-Men uses wind powers, among her other weather-related abilities; usually, though, just to fly.
  • A full-fledged wind user in the X-Men team is Sofía Mantega, aka Renascence (and formerly Wind Dancer).
  • Windfall, one of the Masters of Disaster in The DCU.
  • Whirlwind, a Marvel Comics supervillain.
  • Bigby Wolf mainly uses this power to huff and puff but can also calm the winds if he tries. His father, the North Wind, has a much higher level of power.
  • Red Tornado of the Justice League of America mainly uses tornado-like gusts, but can do virtually anything with wind.
  • Typhon from The Incredible Hercules is capable of causing Wind-related natural disasters like Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Typhoons, etc.
  • Thor can project whirlwinds from his hammer, summon them naturally, or generate them with his cape. He can use these whirlwinds to carry people safely or shield them from harm.

Fan Works[]

Literature[]

  • The Wheel of Time generally averts this even though it has an elemental system, as Air is generally used for telekinesis-like effects instead of wind effects.
  • In the Codex Alera, everyone bonds with one or more "furies" of an element, one of which is wind. Wind furies grant Flight and speed to powerful crafters, but don't work well in enclosed or underground spaces, and salt hurts them. A Knight Aeris without any significant furycrafting besides wind (such as Amara) also falls straight into Fragile Speedster territory. Windcrafting is also extremely useful for spying, too, as a windcrafter can cause the air to bend light to generate impromptu telescopes or to conceal people or objects, or to generate fields to hush out noise. In one extreme case, a team of Knights Aeris actually used their ability to bend light to create a giant magnifying glass that focused sunlight into an impromptu Death Ray that swept an entire bridge clean of invading Canim.
  • In The Dresden Files, Harry Dresden uses wind magic almost as often as fire magic, maybe even more often but to less destructive effect.
    • Less? Tell that to the napalm firing Renfields in Blood Rites.
    • Elaine, in what is almost certainly a Shout-Out to The Mighty Thor, twirls one of her foci, a chain, to summon a powerful whirlwind.
    • Harry does the same (with his staff) one book before, creating a tornado that picks up the debris of a battle and promptly slices/pulps a lot of very powerful creatures.
  • In Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock, as part of their Personality Powers, coquettes turn into airy sylphs upon death. They also have the ability to manipulate air — but not to any great effect, as Belinda barely notices the faint breeze on her neck that is the top sylph trying to warn her that Doom is Nigh.
  • In Kingdom Keepers, Maleficent gets this added to her bag of tricks, though she uses it as a scare tactic more than anything.
  • The titular Wind Witch of Susan Dexter's Valadan series had this power. At the climax of the book she calls up a hurricane which completely destroys the sea raiders that had been threatening them.
  • In Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian story "The Scarlet Citadel", Pelias explains that he is calling on air spirits to form Conan's transport.
  • The fifth and last introduced main character from Anthony Horowitz's The Power of Five series, Scarlett, has powers over the weather, including the wind. This first manifests itself when she unconsciously brings down an awesomely powerful hurricane onto the Necropolis and, with concentration, is able to lead her friends through it unscathed.
  • In Devon Monk's Dead Iron, Cedar's arrival at the mine is announced by dust devils that form without any wind.
  • Trisana Chandler in Tamora Pierce's Circle quartets has the ability to control weather, including earthquakes, heat, lightning, and wind. When traveling to a hot country, she used her breezes to pick up rumors, cool herself, lift herself to the top of a tower, block somebody's path, etc.
  • In Shadow Ops, aeromancy is one of the "legal" elemental schools of magic. The school not only allows for control of wind and flight, but it also allows the aeromancer to generate lighting and control storms.

Live Action TV[]

Mythology and Religion[]

  • In Japanese folklore, the mythical creature Tengu is mostly associated with this trope.
    • Also, the Kamaitachi, flying weasel and master of the Razor Wind. Scythes are optional.
    • There's also Fujin, the god of wind.
  • Lucifer, according to The Bible.
  • In Classical Mythology, the Harpies were sometimes the Anthropomorphic Personifications of destructive winds.
  • Mesopotamian wind and storm deities include Enlil and Ishkur.

Tabletop Games[]

Toys[]

  • Air, here associated with the colour green, is one of the six core Matoran elements of Bionicle and, as such, is wielded by the numerous Toa of Air. Unlike most other elements, almost no non-Toa creatures have access to wind powers.

Video Games[]

  • Ōkami has the Gale brushstroke, which is obtained from Kazegami. By drawing a swirl of ink, you can create winds that blow you, your opponents, or objects around. Later, you get a Whirlwind brush technique by drawing 3 horizontal lines. Can be used for juggling enemies.
  • Zephyr Vanguardion of Fantasia - Momento of Grand Finale.
  • Zelda has several items that give Link wind powers:
    • In The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker, Link get a magical leaf that he can use to hang-glide, at the cost of some magic. It can also be used to make a strong blast of air. Another example is the titular Wind Waker, a magical conductor's baton that can be used to change the direction of the wind and conjure cyclones.
    • The Legend Of Zelda Minish Cap: Gust Jar is also dual-purpose. It is charged by sucking up air (and items and enemies), and then releases it as a blast of air. Link uses it to grab elastic mushrooms to pull himself across pits, pull the shells off of enemies, and extinguish flames.
    • The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: Gale Boomerang is used to blow (mostly) pinwheels for various effects.
    • The Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks: Whirlwind is a horn-thing that, when Link blows into it, he can use it to push pinwheels, push important items across chasms, and throw bombs into the resident dungeon boss.
    • The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time: Farore's Wind is a spell that creates teleportation points in dungeons so Link can quickly return to that room.
    • The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword: The Gust Bellows works similarly to the Gust Jar above, but lacks the "suck" part.
  • Woodrow/Garr Kelvin from Tales of Destiny wields the Swordian of Wind, Igtenos.
    • Spada Belforma of Tales of Innocence uses wind and lightning techs and magic.
    • Hisui Hearts, Tales of Hearts, uses primarily wind techs with his bow. Also, though he can cast spells of a few elements, he's the only character with the most powerful wind spell, Cyclone.
    • Forcystus in Tales of Symphonia, part of the Quirky Miniboss Squad, uses wind spells, some of which also count as Razor Wind.
      • From the same game, the summon Sylph can be used for wind-element attacks as well.
    • I'LL BLOW YOU AWAY! (Note that the character who says this has quite a few wind-element strike artes in his repetoire.)
      • A stronger example from the same game is Raven, who has both wind based strike artes and wind element magic.
  • Subversion: Masaki Andoh of Super Robot Wars rides the Elemental Lord of Wind Cybuster, but does not utilize wind in battle. Instead, it focuses more on its Fragile Speedster status.
    • Some animations for his Discutter show it summoning the blade from a small tornado of some sort.
  • Aya Shameimaru of Touhou is a crow tengu, so she uses wind.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog learned some air based abilities from Sonic Adventure 2 onward.
    • Air seems to be Sonic's association element, especially in Sonic And The Black Knight", where he's titled The Knight of the Wind because he declares that his only master is the wind that blows free.
  • The Persona series:
  • Luc, the wielder of the True Wind Rune in the Suikoden series.
  • The Pokémon element to which this would be attributed is Flying. Johto Gym Leader Falkner, Hoenn Gym Leader Winona, and Unova Gym Leader Skyla specialize in Flying types.
    • The legendary Pokemon Tornadus introduced in Pokémon Black and White is notably the first pure Flying type, and is based on the wind god Fujin.
    • There's also Rayquaza from Generation III; Groudon rules the earth, Kyogre rules the seas, and Rayquaza, whose roar is enough to send the other two running, rules the sky.
    • What about Lugia? Its power is so strong that just flapping its wings can blow houses apart!
  • Ivan and Sheba from Golden Sun both have wind manipulation powers in their base class, though any of the playable characters can gain these powers through use of the class system. Karis, their successor in the third game, has the added benefit of wind-based healing.
  • Lilica Felchenrow in Arcana Heart uses the Arcana of Wind as her default.
  • The Arashi orb from Onimusha gives Samanosuke the ability to use wind magic.
  • Goenitz from The King of Fighters.
  • Mega Man 2: Air Man ga taosenai!
    • Also, Wind Man and Tornado Man, but not Gyro Man. And as in the myth, Tengu Man. Also, Hyperstorm H from Wily Wars.
    • There's almost always an example in each game from Mega Man X onwards. Most notable is Harpuia of Mega Man Zero.
  • Misaki Kawana of Eternal Fighter Zero uses wind in many of her attacks, both to boost her movement and to pound her opponent with strong gales.
  • Any magic user who gets their hands on the Wind, Elwind, Tornado, Holsety, Blizzard, Aircalibur, Excalibur, or Rexcalibur tomes in Fire Emblem.
    • Some examples of characters who wield said tomes constantly: Prince Lewyn (Elwind and Forseti), Lewyn's magic user kids, especially Ced (Forseti), Cecilia (Aircalibur), Ursula as a morph (Excalibur), Soren (Rexcalibur)...
  • Both shamans and druids in Warcraft can manipulate the air; shamans call upon it for a wide and assorted range of powers, while druids prefer to summon hurricanes and tornadoes to destroy and incapacitate their enemies.
  • Crono gets a "Wind Slash" attack in Chrono Trigger, which has the same Light (Heaven) element as his spells.
  • Xaldin from Kingdom Hearts.
    • Also, Ventus, as his name suggests. Like Terra and Aqua, he can use the other elements in his regular spells as well, but only he can use the high level Tornado spell, and several of his finishing attacks mix in wind.
  • The Maple Story Knight of Cygnus Windbreaker class is composed of archers that use the power of the wind. One of their skills involves use of a magical wind that makes them immune to physical attacks, and wind-based attacks used in this state have their attack power increased. A different skill turns all neutral attacks into wind-based attacks, including their More Dakka and Rain of Arrows. They are generally more Glass Cannons rather than Fragile Speedsters, as they are quite slow and have low health compared to the other Knights of Cygnus.
  • Wendy Ryan of Psychic Force, the Psychiccer of Wind.
  • Elementalists in Guild Wars can specialize in air magic, and while it focuses mainly on lightning, several genuine wind-only spells make appearances as well.
    • Dervishes also have some wind based skills, appropriately associated with the "Wind Prayers" attribute.
  • Von Twirlenkiller, the third boss from MadWorld.
  • City of Heroes has the "storm summoning" powerset, allowing a PC to attack with windgusts, hurricanes, and tornados, along with other kinds of storms. Oddly enough, the powerset also has a basic healing power associated with it.
  • Talim from Soul Calibur, who's a "Wind Priestess", oh!
  • Fraternal twin brothers Kharg and Darc from Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, both being the Wind-oriented guy in two different teams and the leader.
  • Rachel Alucard from BlazBlue has the Drive power to literally blow herself and the opponent away with wind.
  • In some Final Fantasy games, the Pandemona, Chocobo, Sylph, and Fenrir summons can deal Wind damage.
    • In Final Fantasy VI, Sabin can summon a tornado...which heals the party and takes him out of the fight. And leaves him dead afterwards. He also utilizes a more traditional wind-based attack.
    • There's also a recurring Aero or Tornado spell that occasionally shows up.
    • The protagonists of FFV are each designated various elements, with the hero Bartz getting wind. As the Gladiator class in the remake, he can sometimes execute a wind-elemental attack dealing 9999 damage.
    • Fujin, a Recurring Boss in Final Fantasy VIII, named after the Japanese God of Wind. Appropriately, she's partnered with Raijin (God of Thunder).
  • The Green Mages and Green Skulls in the Disgaea series specialize in wind magic, and the Mystic Beast is their monster counterpart.
  • Aside from being a healing White Magician Girl, Breath of Fire IV's Nina uses wind magic for offense.
  • Vivi in Luminous Arc and Sadie in the sequel, Luminous Arc 2. (In Sadie's case, one of her random battle quotes is actually "I'll blow you away!")
  • Kushala Daora from Monster Hunter definitely fits here. It's known as the elder dragon of wind, and with good reason. It can generate a wind barrier around itself which will knock hunters off their feet if they get too close, which can complicate things for melee hunters. It has a breath weapon befitting its nature. Instead of fire or lightning, it fires blasts of concentrated hurricane-force winds, capable of doing heavy damage and throwing a hunter 10~15 feet into the air.
  • In Heretic, the Iron Lich boss has a windstorm attack that throws you up in the air and does damage until you escape.
  • Tornado Kirby and Wing Kirby from the Kirby series.
  • The wind itself in Flower, which combines with Petal Power.
  • Sindel's scream fatality and Fujin's wind-skinner fatality in the Mortal Kombat series.
  • The game LostWinds gives you the ability to control, move, and attack with - you guessed it - wind!
  • The titular monster hunters in The Witcher have a variety of simple spells ranging from traps that damage and immobilize anything walking over them, to blasts of fire, to limited mind control. Their most often used, and arguably most useful, is a quick blast of wind that can push back, stun, knockdown, and disarm anyone in front of them at the time.
  • Gale from Digital Devil Saga.
  • Raidou Kuzunoha uses "Force" spells in his cameo in the Updated Rerelease of Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne.
  • This is one of many elemental abilities Luigi of the Super Mario Bros. series has shown, while playing baseball or soccer. Being Luigi, the Wind Is Green, and even gains a vacuum in Luigis Mansion that can blow wind, fire, water and ice.
  • In Rosenkreuzstilette, we have Liebea, a cute, shy Rose-Haired Girl who's prone to Power Incontinence in the form of summoning powerful storms.
  • Koei gives us the Dynasty Warriors, where wind is not a standard element but is generally common as part of attacks used as juggling or crowd clearing moves. Pang Tong is the most notable practitioner, possessed of powerful crowd clearing tornadoes as part of his moveset and his musou attack. His faction color and his attacks are, of course, green.
    • It appears with greater regularity in the Samurai Warriors series, where the available elements include ice, fire, lightning, demon, and, as per this trope, wind. A wind element attack ignores defense and damages enemies even if they block. No one character explicitly specializes in the element, but Shingen Takeda can easily call on it due to his moveset reflecting his motto Fu Rin Ka Zan. Several 'final' weapons also feature the Wind element, most notably that of Nobunaga Oda.
  • Matsukaze Tenma of Inazuma Eleven GO uses wind-based hissatsu.
  • The Fairy in Desire Dungeon specializes in using wind magic, including Razor Wind.
  • The Kamaitachi ability from Battle Golfer Yui lets Yui ignore the wind conditions on a course, which logicallycomes in handy if the wind blowing on the golf course isn't favoring Yui, and lets her pierce through wood. She learns this ability from GeGeGe no Kitaro.
  • The Air elementals in the Skylanders series.
  • Rashid from Street Fighter V, who refers to himself as "Rashid of the Turbulent Winds"

  • In Sequel Series The Legend of Korra: Tenzin, Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo are a family of Airbenders descended from Aang, who instruct Korra, the current Avatar, in Airbending. The fact that all of these are related to Aang in some way or another (the first four being his descendants and the latter being his reincarnation) definitely helps.
  • Linka of Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
  • Raimundo in Xiaolin Showdown.
    • Despite them commonly being Fragile Speedsters, wind elements probably packs the biggest punch of all the characters in the show (literally and with regard to power).
    • Have you seen the Final Showdown? He knocks out all the bad guys by himself (who pretty much rule the alternate timeline) once, then completely takes them down while injured, using their own evil statues, all the while surrounded by a holy glow!
  • Hay Lin from W.I.T.C.H.
  • Jetstorm from Transformers Animated, as well as Optimus Prime, by way of the Magnus Hammer.
    • And before them, Jetfire and Landmine of Transformers Cybertron. Landmine's Cyber Tempest attack is especially powerful. He needs to use his Cyber Key to be able to do it. Jetfire just uses his jet turbines.
  • Tornado Man from The Mighty Heroes
  • Hurricane Harry from Cool McCool.
  • Hero: 108's Mystique Sonia has the ability to spin her tongue around like a propeller, blowing enemies away.
  • Xiao Fung, the wind demon of Jackie Chan Adventures ("Like breaking wind?" "Like breaking bones!").
