BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger/Characters

BlazBlue, much like Guilty Gear, has plenty of Rummage Sale Rejects to go around. This is a list of the playable characters who were introduced in BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Voice actors are listed as Japanese/English.

Ragna the Bloodedge

Truly the long lost child of Vash the Stampede and Archer

"Hahaha. Wow... I have no intention of taking any more of this bullshit. Seriously, guys. I'm gonna give you five seconds to get the hell away from me. If you're still here when I finish, I'm gonna kill you."

Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita/Patrick Seitz

The main character: a rebel outlaw with a bad attitude, a short temper, and an axe to grind with the Librarium, the international government. After destroying a branch of the Library and having a colossal bounty put on his head, he sets out for the city of Kagutsuchi in order to destroy the last "Cauldron" and prevent the resurrection of the Black Beast. His Drive ability, Soul Eater, drains his opponent's health, adding it to his own. He can also activate the Azure Grimoire in his right arm to strengthen this ability, at the expense of his own health.

He's Jin Kisaragi's big brother. Their rivalry stems from when they were younger, when Jin used to bully their sickly sister Saya. One day, Ragna noticed that the church the three of them lived in was set on fire. When he entered, he was ambushed by Terumi (disguised as Jin), who cut his arm off, and was left to die inside the burning building. Rachel revived him as a Dhampyr, which caused one of his eyes to turn red and his hair to turn white from trauma. He was then taken in and trained by his master Jubei, who gave him his signature coat and sword, as well as the title of "Bloodedge". The Azure Grimoire that he possesses is actually only half of a fake, the other half belonging to Nu-13. His Astral Finish turns his blade into a scythe as he proceeds to smack his opponent in the face with it, then he transforms into... something, and unleashes a final strike that completely erases the opponent from existence.

In Calamity Trigger's true ending, he is saved by Noel from falling into the cauldron and becoming the Black Beast. As such, Nu dies and all is well... until Terumi shows up and observes Noel surviving as a possibility of the Continuum Shift. After a brief scuffle, Noel tags along with Ragna for Continuum Shift, but then Ragna tells her off and sets out on his own to kill Terumi. They fight, but it is revealed that Noel is already being tempered by the cauldron, and he is unable to stop her transformation into Mu -12-.

• Accidental Marriage: In Rachel's joke ending, Noel got a marriage certificate for the two of them and faked the seal. Too bad it got anulled by Nirvana. Who ripped up the contract and remotely detonated the civil administration building which had the copies.
• All Girls Want Bad Boys: Along with his younger brother/rival Jin, this is Ragna's case towards Noel and Rachel.
• All Just a Dream: His joke ending in Continuum Shift.
• Always Night: As the Material Collection and his Calamity Trigger story state, Ragna prefers to attack the NOL when it's dark because "Everyone lets their guard down at night...".
• Ambidextrous Sprite:
  • Canonically, he carries his sword in his left hand, and the Azure Grimoire on his artificial right hand. In gameplay, the Azure is always on the hand closest to the "camera" and the sword always in opposite hand. One of his Too Many Belts changes sides as well.
  • The character portrait for his younger self is a more noticeable example, as his eyes are larger and the shirt he wears is sleeveless. In flipped version of the portrait for when he's facing toward the left side of the screen, they try to avert the issue by making sure to keep the colors for his Mismatched Eyes in their correct positions. However, the bindings for his grimoire still switch to the wrong arm.
• And I Must Scream: One of his alternate endings. After Ragna fought Nu, Noel enters the scene. Ragna's begging her to run as Nu has apparently taken control of his body. Noel starts to completely freak out and starts firing at him, calling him a monster. Then the player sees what's really happening; Nu merged with Ragna to form the Black Beast as the dominant personality, with Ragna unable to do anything but watch.
  • In his Continuum Shift bad ending, the Azure overpowers him and transforms him into a new Black Beast. Moments before his transformation, he blacks out. It apparently destroyed most of the world, but was stopped by Rachel and several others. When he wakes up, Rachel is cradling him, and though he can hear speaking, he can't speak, though he keeps trying to ask them all what's wrong, and asking Rachel to stop crying.
• And Then John Was a Zombie:
  • Until Phase 0 reveals that he was not in fact the actual Black Beast, and Nu simply fused with his false Azure Grimoire arm to form the Black Beast's body, and when he is sent back to the past, he loses his memory and becomes the hero Bloodedge, who single-handedly fought against the Beast for a year.
  • Double Subverted. Ragna gets absorbed into the Beast and becomes part of it after he dies.
• Animal Motifs: Strangely enough, he's called a "little puppy" by Terumi and compared to a stray dog by Luna. Perhaps a better way to describe Ragna would be to refer to him as an "underdog" of sorts.
• Anime Hair
• Anti-Anti-Christ: Continuum Shift reveals that he was born to be the Destroyer of the World, though there's a chance he could become the Protector of the Azure instead.
• Anti-Hero: Type III.
  • Offscreen Villainy: Ragna's zeal for destroying the NOL extends (in the Materials Collection) to killing without remorse anyone in the employ of the organization, up to and including more or less innocent people just collecting their paychecks. To some, this may push him well down the scale to a Type V or even to Villain Protagonist levels.
• Arc Words: "I can hear the pulse of the Black Beast..."
• Artificial Limbs: Ragna's right arm is actually the Azure Grimoire which is actually a fake, and also the future/past body of the Black Beast replacing the arm Terumi cut off. In Continuum Shift, he loses his OTHER arm by overloading it with power and making it explode while turning Mu back into Noel. Kokonoe builds him a new one from Lambda's spare parts.
• Awesome but Impractical: Devoured By Darkness, where he makes a clawed hand that grabs you and summons a bunch of claws to ravage your body and take away 60 percent of your health, adding 30 percent to his own. This would be awesome if it weren't for the fact that you need to enter Blood Kain mode first, which requires 50 heat, and then you need to use another 50 heat in order to use this move. Unless you're using Unlimited Ragna, but even then, there's still the issue of range. It can be used when your opponent isn't expecting it, but since your main goal with Blood Kain is to apply excess pressure and damage, there is almost no chance you'll ever get to use it.
• Awesome McCoolname: Considering the source of his name is the norse Ragnarok, his first name means "god".
• Badass: Being Sol's Spiritual Successor, this is a requirement.
  • Badass Normal: An alternate version of Ragna was thrown into the past and had his Grimoire stolen. That Ragna became Bloodedge, whose equipment was given to Ragna, who took on the name as a title in memory of the great hero.
    • Badass Abnormal: ...But his powers and memories return to him in the presence of the Black Beast.
• Badass Creed: During his Astral Finish:

"I'll show you the power of the Azure! I'll show you fear. There is no hell, only darkness. This is the power of the Azure."

• Badass Longcoat
• Badass Transplant: His missing right arm was replaced with an Artifact of Doom. Can YOU tell the difference? His enemies sure can. The artists? Not so much.
• Bad Dreams: He is haunted by his inability to do anything against Terumi in his past.
• Bad Powers, Good People: Doombringer and a very violent person by rumor, but he's actually nice when he isn't being screwed over by the universe, angered or being attacked.
• Best Served Cold: Against Terumi for completely ruining his life.
• BFS: Reaches about half-way up his body when he stands and it's almost as thick as his head. Litchi even goes as far as to call it a "slab of metal".
• Big Damn Heroes: In the True Ending, when he saves Noel from being killed by v-13 by blocking her attack an instant before it connects.
  • He pulls it off again and again in Continuum Shift's True Ending. Saves Rachel from Hazama and Phantom's trap, saves Jin from Mu, and reverts Noel to normal at the cost of his left arm.
• Big "What?": Ragna the Whatedge, and all the other moments in Rachel's gag reel. Due to playing the Only Sane Man in Gag Reels, this is expected.
• Blessed with Suck: The Material Collection reveals that he generally avoids humans because his grimoire constantly sucks lives out of his surroundings in order to function.
• Bonus Boss: If you beat the final stage in Arcade Mode with enough super finishes, you fight a special version of him called Unlimited Ragna that is permanently in Blood Kain mode and whose stats are heavily increased.
• Bring My Red Jacket: Most of the endings featuring him have him receive some type of injury.
• Bruiser with a Soft Center
• Butt Monkey: Continuum Shift seems to have turned him into this. The ghost-dream and the Spectacles of Eros scenes are both huge Crowning Moments of Funny. Not to mention that just about anyone not named Taokaka has something derisive or snarky to say to him.
• Calling Your Attacks: Ragna does an enormous amount of this, at maximum volume and ferocity.
• Catch Phrase: "It's not over yet." It's even the name of one of his Special attacks.
• Chick Magnet: In Rachel's non-canon joke ending for Continuum Shift, by the power of the Spectacles of Eros placed upon him by Rachel as a prank. Her jealous body language, however, speaks much louder than the mocking banter she provides throughout the ending. Supposedly, the glasses worked a little too well for her subconscious comfort.
• Cruel and Unusual Death: A case of Gameplay and Story Segregation, but, if Ragna performs his throw, he lifts his opponent over head, activates his Blood Scythe's extension of the blade, and stabs them in the face, making a cruel remark along the lines of "Does it sting?". Actually, he warns them, "This'll sting".
• Curse Cut Short: In Calamity Trigger Reconstruction, he, like Makoto, almost slips an F-bomb beneath the radar when Jubei gives him a ghost scare.
• Cuteness Proximity: Has a bit of this going on in Continuum Shift. Even he can't help but be swayed by the cuteness of the Kaka kittens. A flashback reveals that his first reaction upon seeing his master Jubei was "you're a kitty! A big fluffy kitty!".
• Dark Is Not Evil: However...
  • Good Is Not Nice: Especially when you've killed every man and woman in sight inside NOL headquarters when you target the NOL branch of the 9th Hierarchical City.
  • Dark Is Edgy: His element, which has some flamelike imagery.
    • Foreshadowing: If you watch carefully when he uses Dead Spike, you'll see the head of the Black Beast.
• Dark and Troubled Past
• Deadly Upgrade: Blood Kain.
• Determinator: In Continuum Shift's True Ending, he gets a laser through his chest and blows up his left arm to turn Mu back into Noel. And he survives.
• Downer Ending
• Dynamic Entry: He has a new attack in Continuum Shift called 'Belial Edge' which is this.
• Eleventh-Hour Superpower: In Calamity Triggers true ending against Unlimited Hakumen, and once more in Continuum Shifts true ending. Against the player in Hazama's Continuum Shift arcade mode.
• Even the Guys Want Him: Besides Jin, Arakune's Continuum Shift Gag Reel features Hazama wanting to marry an unconscious Ragna.
• Friend To All Living Things That Aren't Ghosts or Bounty Hunters: Gets along with Tao, and as seen here, official art shows him with an apparent and natural affinity to cats. ^{[dead link]}
• Foreshadowing: One of his dislikes is ghosts. And Terumi is one: he's possibly even the reason for this phobia in the first place.
• Glass Cannon: He has very low defense: so low, in fact, that despite his huge firepower, even his life-sucking ability will have a hard time keeping it up. A console-exclusive skit had Litchi poke fun of it and compare him to Guilty Gear's Chipp Za-GAUNTLET HADES!
• Good Is Not Nice
• The Greatest Story Never Told: As the original Bloodedge, he bought the Six Heroes the year they needed to arm humanity against the Black Beast... by sacrificing himself to put the Black Beast in a coma for a year. Nobody aside from the Six Heroes (and Celica) knew this... and for some reason, Jubei never tells anyone despite idolizing the man.
• Handicapped Badass: In Blazblue Phase 0, after getting sent back in time, Ragna's right arm and eye stopped working...
• Hates Being Touched: Doesn't seem to mind if he's on good terms with people such as Noel or Tao, but if not, contact weirds him out.
• Healing Factor: Hakumen's sword has the ability to nullify it though.
• High-Pressure Blood: In Taokaka's Continuum Shift story mode, she describes him as looking like a "blood-sprinkler".
• I Am Not Left-Handed: Restriction 666 released... Dimensional interruption imaginary number formed... BlazBlue (or Azure Grimoire in the dub)... Activated!
• I Can Still Fight:
  • In Hakumen's Continuum Shift Arcade Mode, after losing to him.
  • In the True Ending, to Hazama.
• Instant Death Radius: Devoured by Darkness really puts the hurt on enemies... pity about the many Awesome but Impractical issues, starting with the atrocious range.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although it's sometimesreally hard to see the heart though.
• Kick Them While They Are Down: 'It's Not Over Yet!' has this effect, though it's more like "pick them up while they are down and sock them."
• Kindhearted Cat Lover: According to this image ^{[dead link]}, cats are apparently pretty fond of him. Furthermore, in his story route in Continuum Shift, he gets along better with the Kaka Village inhabitants than he does with pretty much every other character in the series, and is even shown playing with the children. Must have something to do with his master being a cat...
• Large Ham: Just listen to his battle quotes. Both Sugita and Seitz clearly had a lot of fun with them. And then there's the fact that Seitz Screams Like a Little Girl...
• Lightning Bruiser: His Unlimited self is not only faster and stronger than he normally is, he out-tanks Tager.
• Living MacGuffin: In the first game, practically everyone wants a piece of Ragna.
• Locked Into Strangeness: He used to be blond, like the rest of his family.
• Love Redeems
• Meaningful Name: Ragna comes from the Ragnarok, the Twilight of the gods and the end of the world.
  • Alternately, it references the Norse hero Ragnar Lodbrok, who is known for slaying an evil snake. Considering that Terumi is associated with snakes, this probably is not accidental.
• Mismatched Eyes: Side materials confirm that his red eye is connected to the grimoire instead of vampirism. Rachel only ever bit him once in the first loop, his eye stops working when his grimoire stops working, and his eye starts working again when his grimoire starts working again in Phase 0. Put two and two together.
• Missing Little Sister: Saya.
• The Namesake: Ragna's title "the Bloodedge" actually comes from the unsung hero Bloodedge. That coat and sword is also from the same man. In reality, Bloodedge was an semi-amnesic time-displaced Ragna.
• Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Well, this should have been painfully obvious by now.
• Nerf: Continuum Shift took the nerf bat to Unlimited Ragna, toning down his health to make him a less ridiculous True Final Boss... and to make Hazama and Mu-12 even more impressive by comparison. This despite Ragna acquiring the Idea Engine story-wise, which would seem to cause the opposite effect.
• Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: In a nutshell, Ragna is a half-vampire cyborg (courtesy of Rachel and Kokonoe).
• The Obi-Wan: As "Bloodedge", he was this to Jubei. Jubei's now returning the favor.
• One-Handed Zweihander: How Ragna wields his Blood Scythe.
• One-Man Army: Has destroyed entire NOL installations all on his own.
• One-Winged Angel: Does this during his Astral Finish, where he turns into... something big and covered in shadow.
• Only Sane Man: Ragna is played as a spectacularly hammy version of this by both voice actors, wildly lampshading the absurdity around him while others hardly seem to notice.
• Perpetual Frowner: While Sol's artworks commonly depicts him smiling/smirking, Ragna is often portrayed as frowning in his artworks. His portrait in the sequel even has him scowling. In his story mode though, he's shown to smile now and then, especially if he's playing with Tao or the other kitties in the Kaka Village.
• Pet the Dog: Sharing his dinner with Taokaka, for starters. And buying food for the starving Platinum (except he's actually being suckered by Platinum).
• Power-Up Letdown: Calamity Trigger Reconstruction brings back the moment Ragna finally stops holding back (see Power Limiter below), only this time, for whatever reason, Unlimited Ragna does not become playable. Cue Unlimited Hakumen and Nu-13.
• Power Degeneration: The more Ragna uses the fake Azure, the greater the chance that it will take control of his entire body and turn him into a humanoid Black Beast.
• Power Gives You Wings: His dark power manifests in a dark angel wing, during his win poses.
• Power Glows: Blood Kain comes with a black/dark purple glow.
• Power Limiter/Willfully Weak: He constantly holds back his true power, apparently because of some unspecified indecisiveness; Rachel admonishes him for this, and remarks upon the change in him when he stops doing so.
• The Promise: His promise to Litchi to spare Arakune.
• Punctuated Pounding: He does this to many of his opponents, especially Terumi.
• Real Men Wear Pink: According to Word of God, his hobby is... cooking. Apparently, his specialty is meat dishes... which Jin happens to despise.
• Red And Black And All Around Evil: Subverted. He wears red jacket and black vest beneath, but he's more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Unless you count his worst days of 'indiscriminately killing everyone NOL'...
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red oni to Jin's blue oni.
• Red Right Hand: His right arm is the Azure Grimoire, and he turns it into a giant demonic claw for "Devoured by Darkness".
• Screaming Warrior
• Screams Like a Little Girl: In his Continuum Shift Gag Reel, after realizing that he became what he feared the most: a ghost. Being the Butt Monkey he is, he is mocked relentlessly afterward by Rachel and Tager, of all people. Link to proof is above under Large Ham.
• Screw Destiny: Basically tells this to Jin in his Continuum Shift True Ending. He doesn't care if he is destined to be the Destroyer of the World, he's going to fight that destiny, and that if Jin wants to fight him, he should do it as his brother rather than as the World's Antibody.
• Ship Tease:
  • With Noel, or not, considering Noel's peculiar origins.
  • With Rachel. Both games tease this shipping considerably.
  • With Taokaka, having fed her several times, and since by the end of Continuum Shift, she and Ragna now travel together.
    • Does this make him a canon Chick Magnet?
  • And again with Caelica, but then he went and died. Yeah, it's probably canon.
• Shotoclone: Conspicuously averts this with his lack of full-screen projectiles and hurricane kick. Inferno Divider on the other hand....
• Sinister Scythe: His weapon Blood-scythe converts into one during his Astral Finish, Black Onslaught.
• Sir Swearsalot: Far too much of his dialogue outside of each game's True Ending consists of him cursing and raging at everyone with little to no provocation. When playing his story mode, make sure you're not in a public place with the volume up. It'll happen that much.
• SNK Boss: His "Unlimited" version.
• Super Mode: Blood Kain.
• Swiss Army Weapon: The Blood-scythe, which incorporates BFS and Sinister Scythe. It also has a revolver cylinder that doesn't seem to get any use.
• Synchronization: Continuum Shift reveals he has a "life-link" with Nu, which is why no one could kill her in the previous game. Whatever else a life-link involves, it means that neither he or she can die unless both of them die at the same time (or something severs the lifelink).
• Tall, Dark and Snarky
• Temporal Paradox: Hakumen is not the only Alternate Continuity form around these parts. Thanks to Laser-Guided Amnesia, it turns out that a future version of Ragna was the original Bloodedge.
• Theme Naming: Ragna's attack names sound dark and demonic (Dead Spike, Belial Edge, Blood Kain and Carnage Scissors), invoke the imagery of Hell ('Hell's' Fang, 'Inferno' Divider and Gauntlet 'Hades'), or involve darkness in some way (Devoured by Darkness).
• This Is Unforgivable!: He'll shout this at Jin when using some of his specials. In Continuum Shift, he shouts it at Hazama during an animated cutscene.
• Tomato in the Mirror: While the details are a mystery, it appears Ragna is not a naturally born human, a point he tries in vain to use to argue Noel back into sanity. He's aware of whatever is going on, but we, the audience, have to wait on another sequel.
  • Used quite literally in Phase 0, where it is revealed that Ragna is the original Bloodedge, just without his memory.
• Took a Level in Badass: Much like Jin, in Continuum Shift, Ragna becomes infinitely more badass. In Continuum Shift's true ending, after Lambda sacrifices herself and gives Ragna her Idea Engine, he proceeds to defeat Hazama (who has his Azure Grimoire activated) and then manages to convert Mu-12 back into Noel.
• Too Many Belts: Two Many Belts, to be exact.
• True Final Boss: Unlimited Ragna in Calamity Trigger Arcade Mode.
• Tsundere: Which makes his interactions with Jin and Rachel into a sort of competition. Played more normally with Noel.
• The Unfought: In Tager's story mode.
• White-Haired Pretty Boy: But good this time.
• Why Did It Have To Be Ghosts?
• Why Won't You Die?: "Die Already!": something he yells out while fighting.
• Wouldn't Hit a Girl: One of Ragna's nicer traits. Like most of his interactions with other people, as long as you're not in his way, he won't try to harm you. However, even if you do, he'll most likely regret his actions... doubly so if you're female. However, he still will fight female characters, even if he doesn't like doing so.
  • (To Litchi) "*sigh* It just doesn't feel right fighting a woman."
  • (To Nu, before killing her) "I really am sorry... Saya..."
• You Rebel Scum: How most of the normal NOL see him.
  • Also, his theme song? It's called "Rebellion".
• You're Insane!: He thinks Rachel is insane, calling her a "twisted, evil, blood-sucking rabbit" in her Continuum Shift Gag Reel when, due to the effect of the Spectacles of Eros, Luna falls madly in love with him, and Rachel taunts her by claiming that he's head-over-heels in love with her (Rachel).

Ragna: You twisted, evil, blood-sucking rabbit! What the hell do you think you're doing?!

Jin Kisaragi

The Rival. Major Jin Kisaragi is one of the elite commanding officers of the NOL. Known as the Hero of the Ikaruga War, Jin is cold, arrogant, borderline sociopathic, and teeters on the edge of insanity, with a disturbing and almost incestuous fixation upon his brother. Despite all this, he genuinely earned his status, and is respected among the NOL's ranks, even though his own opinion of the organization is dubious at best. Jin also has an irrational hatred for his subordinate, Noel Vermillion. When he heard Ragna had been sighted in Kagutsuchi, he actively disobeys the Library's orders and hunts him down by himself. His Drive, Reitou (Frost Bite), freezes his opponents.

Ragna got fed up with his especially needy attitude as a kid, and when Ragna ignored him in favor of Saya (whom Noel resembles, which is why he hates her), Jin's slow path to insanity began. He apparently began having visions of the future, which may or may not have been induced by Terumi or Yukianesa, and this eventually caused him to burn down the church where his family lived after it was revealed to him that Ragna was technically responsible for the world's current state. He watched with satisfaction as Terumi cut off Ragna's arm and left him to die. Terumi then ran off with Saya and Jin, wiped Jin's memory of the incident, and Jin never saw Saya again. He was later adopted into the noble Kisaragi house, joined the academy, and quickly rose up the ranks. His sword, Mucro Algesco: Yukianesa, is a katana with a blade made of pure ice: it's one of the Nox Nyctores, an Evil Weapon that both rekindles his lost memories and inspires homicidal fury around Ragna and Noel. His Astral Finish involves him firing a small but fast wave of ice on the ground that is unblockable. If it connects, the opponent is frozen along with the background, then shattered.

After the events of Calamity Trigger's true ending, he wakes up on an NOL airship, which is a trap set by Hazama. After escaping, he sets out to find Ragna again.

• Above Good and Evil: Not him personally, Jubei states that his Power of Order "...ain't good, but it ain't evil either." We've yet to see how it works in practice, however.
• Adorkable: He starts playing around with his ice car, making sound effects along with it.
• All Girls Want Bad Boys: An extreme case with Tsubaki.
  • Also applies to his fangirls.
• Always Save the Girl: The first question that came to Jin's mind after Tsubaki's Face Heel Turn was if he could save her.
  • In Makoto's Story Mode in EXTEND, Jin seems to value Makoto's safety more than his and doesn't even mind freezing Hazama while barely being able to walk and then carrying her off to save her. In Continuum Shift proper, Jin parries a shot against her and still freezes Hazama despite his injuries.
• Ambiguously Gay: Jin's fixation upon Ragna has... uncomfortable undertones.
  • It's even lampshaded in one of the "Teach Me Miss Litchi" sketches and in the "Help Me Professor Kokonoe" segment for his story mode.
  • During Rachel's joke ending in Continuum Shift.
  • The creators sure love to make jokes about Jin's obsession with Ragna. However, this does not mean that he is gay in the canon storyline.
  • If Word of God and side materials are anything to go by, Jin is canonically straight. Drama CDs have long revealed not only that he cannot fathom how people find his attitude towards Ragna Ho Yay-tastic, but that he also likes girls. Yes, even those not named Tsubaki. Not that this will convince the fans.
• Amnesiac Dissonance: Due to Terumi erasing his memories, he was actually pretty normal during his academy days; though still cold and serious, he could even be nice at times. This all went to hell after the Ikaruga War...
• An Ice Person: His personality fits his powerset quite well.
• Animals Hate Him: Whereas Catgirl Taokaka has normal victory quotes when fighting all the other characters, her response to Jin is just growling and hissing and "Tao doesn't like you!".
• Annoying Younger Sibling: According to Ragna, he was always super-needy and scared when he was a kid, always nagging him for help at every turn. It's easy to see why Ragna got so annoyed with him and paid more attention to Saya.
• Asskicking Equals Authority
• Ax Crazy: Becomes this whenever he's around Ragna. After a psychotherapy session with Hakumen and Jubei, he has been cured. He's still an aloof jerk though.
• Badass:
  • Badass Abnormal: He is one of the two current wielders of the "Power of Order" (the other being Hakumen). Apparently, this ability makes him so powerful that he can even destroy a whole nation by himself, make Hazama/Terumi run for his life, take down a Brainwashed Tsubaki without even breaking a sweat, dispel Phantom's magic, etc. Damn. Totally Badass, indeed.
  • Badass Army: A part of this in the NOL as one of it's most powerful soldiers before his defection, nonetheless. He IS regarded as the "The Hero of Ikaruga", after all.
• Badass Boast: "I am the cold steel... the blade that will restore balance to this world!" Only seen once, but it's the first time he's activated Yukianesa against its will, signaling that he Took a Level in Badass. Also, afterward, he is one of the few characters that doesn't receive a severe beatdown after fighting Hazama in story mode.
• Badass Cape: Although, they look more like sleeves rather than cape. But still, they can expand in size at will and hurt you real bad.
• Badass Creed: Shared with Hazama, Tsubaki and Noel, and probably with the rest of their division.

• Berserk Button: Hurting Ragna or getting in the way between him and Ragna. Tsubaki finds this out the hard way in the drama CD The Wheel of Fortune. Mentioning anything remotely bad about Tsubaki is enough for him to slice you right then and there. Harming Makoto in any way in front of him. The button won't be pressed hard. But... he will STILL kick your ass.
• Betty and Veronica: He's the Archie to Tsubaki's Betty and Makoto's Veronica.
• Big Screwed-Up Family: Even after being adopted. His adopted siblings in the Kisaragi Family hate and distrust him because of their jealousy towards his accomplishments.
• Big "Shut Up!": Says this to an extreme when resisting Yukianesa, even to the point of saying it atleast three times in a row.
• Bishounen: Being Ky's Spiritual Successor, this must be a requirement.
• Bi the Way: His feelings towards both Ragna and Tsubaki put him into this catagory now that he's no longer a Depraved Bisexual.
• Blond Guys Are Evil: He may not be an antagonist, but he certainly fits this trope in his less lucid moments. By Continuum Shift, he's mellowed out considerably, subverting this trope.
• Brainwashed/Grand Theft Me: It's revealed that Terumi is the one who possessed him to burn down the church and cut Ragna's arm off.
• But for Me It Was Tuesday: His reaction to Bang's one-sided vendetta.
• Button Mashing: Sekkajin (Mash C).
• Catch Phrase: "You are...MY ENEMY!". When facing those who threaten the world and trigger the Power of Order.
• Character Development: By the end of Continuum Shift, after finally managing to resist Yukianesa's influence, he is significantly more mellow. Even Jubei comments that he "sure has grown".
• Child Prodigy: Being Ky's Spiritual Successor, this is a requirement. Despite being adopted into a noble and prestigious family with many "siblings", Jin has been appointed the first in-line to inherit the House of the Kisaragi Family because of his outstanding talents. He's earned every one of his accolades, including a promotion to major due to his accomplishments in the war against the nation of Ikaruga.
• Cool Big Bro: In Jin's Military Academy Days, he can be referred as this towards his group with Tsubaki, Noel, Makoto and Carl.
• Cool Sword: Literally. His sword, named Yukianesa ("snow fairy"), has a blade made of ice.
• Counter Attack: Gains one in Continuum Shift. Not surprising that it shares its name with Hakumen's.
• Creepy Cool Crosses: Jin has these on his boots, which he shares with the rest of the NOL crew. The metallic clasps on his clothing are shaped like these as well.
• Curb Stomp Battle: Going for Bang's Bad Ending in Continuum Shift? Just don't expect Jin to put up much of a fight, being unable to use C or D-attacks and specials.
  • Also his fight with a brainwashed Tsubaki in Continuum Shift when he broke free of Yukianesa's influence. Tsubaki literally has NO chance whatsoever.
• Cursed with Awesome: Jin is a wielder of the "Power of Order", and deemed as the "World's Antibody". Yet because of this, he has been subjected as an Unwitting Pawn by Hazama particularly in the Ikaruga Civil War where he killed Tenjou. Also, take note that Jin is not even aware of this power until recently. Sure, he was a hero after the war. But... Bang claimed he was a murderer.
• Cryonics Failure: His ice powers all enable this, with his Astral being the clearest example thereof.
• Dark and Troubled Past
• Dating Catwoman: If Jin still has his feelings with Tsubaki, this is what he'll end up doing now that Tsubaki has undergone a Face Heel Turn.
• Deadpan Snarker: Shares ths trait with Rachel. But even more extreme.
  • Tsubaki in shock of Jin's defection from the Library:

Tsubaki: I can't believe someone as loyal as you would... Would defect. Why? Jin: Why? You know how to ask the most important question, don't you? Well Tsubaki, allow me to enlighten you. I did it because those were my orders. Is that not what a soldier is supposed to do?

• • Bang giving some lecture to an injured Jin inside Ronin-Gai:

Bang: However, a true warrior, will never leave an injured man to die. Jin: Your idiocy is truly astounding. There is only one goal in war, and that is to win.

Makoto: Everybody is working so hard. Jin: Noisy would be much more accurate.

  • In Continuum Shift, Jin is the walking wounded courtesy of Ragna, yet he protects Makoto from Hazama, receiving further injuries, holds his own against Unlimited Rachel despite barely being able to move, receives an extremely painful healing treatment from Valkenhayn that not even Jubei would be able to handle, challenges Hakumen, gets stomped on, proceeds to get into a fun little love tiff with Tsubaki (read: she's trying to kill him), fights well enough to scare Hazama into a retreat, fights the incredibly powerful magic user Phantom - who can take out Rachel without sweating - offscreen and apparently wins, and since that's not nearly enough, he tells Hakumen to go away so he can challenge Mu all by himself. Clearly, he's switched one form of insanity for another.
  • If Hazama loses to Jin in his Story Path, it's revealed that this is actually a superpower for Jin. According to Kokonoe, the Power of Order gives him such extreme Heroic Willpower that he can "deflect phenomena intervention through sheer force of will".
• Dismotivation: The Wheel of Fortune reveals that he often neglects reading important documents that come his way, skips meetings and disappears without notice.
• Disproportionate Retribution: Jin's idea of "fun" in Calamity Trigger seems to have been slowly freezing a challenger to death.
• Elemental Powers: His power over ice.
• Evil Is Deathly Cold: At least until Character Development kicked in.
• Face Palm: He does this when he loses due to Time Up.
• Future Me Scares Me: With Japanese voices switched on, Jin is audibly freaking out at the start of a match against Hakumen. Continuum Shift takes this up a step further when Hakumen faces Jin in his Arcade Mode path.
• Giggling Villain: When around Ragna. The now legendary "Help me, Professor Kokonoe!" episode had him let out such a high pitched giggle (followed by an even higher pitched "Nii-san~") that it's barely recognisable as the same person.
• Good-Looking Privates: Or else how did he garner that much of legions of fangirls in-universe?
• Good Is Not Nice: After being freed of Yukianesa's control.

• Handicapped Badass: He can hold his own even when he is not able to use Yukianesa. He took a lot of beatings though. But, still...
• Healing Hands: In The Wheel of Fortune drama CD, it was revealed that Jin can use healing ars. Which he tries to use on Tsubaki after her Heroic Sacrifice. Sadly, he couldn't use it properly at that time due to his mind's state of panic. Doubles up as a subversion of No Cure for Evil.
• Heel Face Turn: As of Continuum Shift's story mode.

• Hoist by His Own Petard: In Bang's Story Mode, one path has Yukianesa freeze him.
• Iaijutsu Practitioner
• Ice King: So much so that he is regarded as "The Ice Prince" in the fandom.
• I Have Many Names: Well, not that many, but he does have some notable one's like, "The Anti-Body", "The False Hero", "The End Bringer", but the most notable is "The Hero of Ikaruga" or just plain "(Mr.)Hero".
• Improbable Age: He successfully ended the Ikaruga Civil War and was promoted to Major shortly after graduating from the Academy, which would put him in his late teens at the time.
• Improbable Weapon: The long sleeves on the sides of his clothing can apparently increase in size and can be used to put on a world of hurt against opponents.
• Incest Subtext: His theme isn't titled "Lust SIN" for nothing.
• Invulnerable Attack: Part of his power in serious play, as opposed to Icecar spam.
• Irony: His Nox Nyctores - Yukianesa is clearly a weapon that continuously puts a strain on his mind. Also, it is given to him by Saya... whom he pretty much despises. Yet, he clearly refuses to get rid of the said weapon and continues to use it.
• It Amused Me
• Jack of All Stats: He is average for both offense and defense. Which is why is he good for beginners. Also being an expy to Ky, this was inevitable.
• Jerkass: Once Jin goes into crazy mode, he's really nasty. He mellows a bit in his Story Mode ending, which is technically canon and allows his paradox of becoming Hakumen to occur. Though Hakumen is still a Jerkass. Just less crazy.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his aloofness and icy cold attitude, Jin is deep down, a caring young man towards those he doesn't hold any deeper feelings of resentment. He would snark at them for sure, but he usually means well.
• Katanas Are Just Better: His Nox Nyctores, Mucro Algesco: Yukianesa. It's a Nox Nyctores in the form of a Katana.
  • Every Japanese Sword Is a Katana
• Kick the Dog: He hates Noel and never wastes an opportunity to insult and belittle her. In his Continuum Shift joke ending, he calls her "trash", "garbage" and "compost" that can't do anything right. And it's hilarious.
• Kill It with Ice
• Laughing Mad: Does this excessively around Ragna and anyone close to Ragna, to extreme lengths.
• Light Is Not Good: As a contrast to Ragna's Dark Is Not Evil nature, Jin dresses in light colors, has blonde hair, is celebrated as the "Hero of Ikaruga", and is a Bishonen. He's also an enormous jerk. This is inverted later by his Heel Face Turn, where he doesn't become a straight example of Light Is Good, but is probably getting there.
• Man Of War: Putting aside his questionable behavior. Aside from being a war hero, Jin is arguably the most attractive male character in the series. Rachel, Litchi and Makoto complimented his elegance. His fighting style is also less about brute power and more about precision, freezing, style.
• The Mean, Evil Brit: Was born in England, according to Word of God, and therefore fits both of these tropes perfectly. Not that you'd know from the game, especially since David Vincent doesn't use the accent.
• Meaningful Name: Jin's name means "blade". His little sister Saya's name means "sheath". Think about this for a second.
• Mercy Kill: Supposedly, the reason for his obsession with killing Ragna, as noted by his dialogue in Hakumen's route in Continuum Shift:

Jin: My brother is suffering in his own private hell. It is for that reason that I intend to kill him, to end his pain forever. To save him from the insanity of this world.

• • That being said, it's important to take everything Jin says about his reason for killing Ragna with a pinch of salt.
• Morality Pets: Tsubaki and Makoto.
• Mr. Fanservice: Let's see here. Feminine looks? Check. Sexy body build? Check. Brooding? Check. Is a Tsundere? Check. Large population of real-world fangirls? Hoo boy, big check.
• Named Weapons: His Nox Nyctores, Yukianesa. Which literally means "Snow Fairy".
• Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Mu refers to him as "The Endbringer" in battle dialogue.
• Never Live It Down: Probably an in-universe example. When it comes to joke ends or extra stuffs, ASW just made sure you never forget that Jin is 'that psychotically brother-obsessed jackass', no matter what kind of development he had over the canon story.
• Nietzsche Wannabe: Doesn't believe in community, and has no ideological or moral compass beyond himself. Rants sometimes about how meaningless the world and the order of the NOL is. By the end of his story, he said he gave up on the world.
  • Ultimately subverted, as while he believes that the world is worthless, he refuses to fall prey to apathy.
• Not Good with People
• Oblivious to Love: In the drama CD The Wheel of Fortune, he may be this or may be pretending to be oblivious. Even Ragna notices that Tsubaki has a crush on Jin the moment he meets Tsubaki.
• One-Man Army: He took down the Ikaruga Federation all by himself. It took him only two days.
• The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Pretty much says this word for word to Ragna despite being in an insane, homoerotic manner.
• Pet the Dog: He has his moments.
  • Even present-day Jin cares a great deal about Tsubaki. When faced with her either becoming possessed or corrupted by Terumi's influence, he immediately sets out to save her.
  • He seems rather friendly to Makoto (if a bit snarky at times), and saved her from Hazama.
  • He is also apologetic to the female officer that he hits to escape the hospital at the beginning of Continuum Shift.
  • In the drama CD The Wheel of Fortune. It was shown that when they were kids, he is rather affectionate to Saya before she became sickly. The reason for Jin's hatred towards Saya and why she suddenly became ill is as of now unknown.
• Power Gives You Wings: His ice powers manifests in white angel wings, during his win poses.
• Power Limiter: Due to Yukianesa's influence on him, he isn't able to use his power to its full extent. By the end of Continuum Shift, this is fixed and he is the only one so far to actually make Terumi flee.
• Precision F-Strike: Not that common, but it happens.
• Psychopathic Manchild: Whenever he's around Ragna, his mental state seems to regress to this.
• Psychotic Smirk: When being around Ragna and being controlled by Yukianesa.
  • Slasher Smile
• Purely Aesthetic Glasses: He wore glasses in his Academy days (and looked damn good in them), but they're never seen or mentioned afterwards.
• Razor Wind: Fubuki/Blizzard, Sekkajin/Snow Flower Storm.
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue oni to Ragna's red oni. Continuum Shift started to give him a few red traits though.

• Selective Obliviousness: Lampshaded by Makoto in the drama CD. He is so sociopathic that he won't even raise an eyebrow when someone talk with him with chocolates all over his/her face. However, it's different if he cares about that someone. He still won't react, but he will at least tell you politely.
  • Also in "Teach Me Miss Litchi", where he doesn't even notice that Noel is wearing a bright orange maid dress until Litchi points him to it.
• Ship Tease: With Tsubaki. Lots and lots of it.
  • Also with Makoto. He is rather caring towards her, almost to the point of his level of caring towards Tsubaki.

Jin: Lieutenant... Are you alright? Makoto: Y-yes! Thank you so much for saving me...! Jin: Your safety is all that... m-matters... ugh...

• • Even though it's a joke on the creators behalf, lets not forget Ragna. Jin's "Help Me, Professor Kokonoe!" episode in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, his joke ending, Rachel's Continuum Shift joke ending, Arakune's joke Continuum Shift ending, and his general obsession with his dear nii-san make it possibly one of the most hinted at parings in the series (even if, as said, it's usually just for a joke).
• Shotoclone: As an Expy of Ky, this was sort-of inevitable.
• Single-Stroke Battle: Yukikaze.
• Skill Gate Characters: Jin's "icecarz" are infamous.
• SNK Boss: Infinite-heat from story mode deserves a mention because his infamous cheapness is made insanely worse by infinite special moves.
• Sociopathic Hero: Very much at his best.
• The Stoic: For most of the time.
  • Not So Stoic: If you value your own life, don't mention Ragna or Noel.
• Student Council President: Jin is the Head of the Student Council of the Military Academy before he graduated.
• Sugar and Ice Personality: Was this until he found out that the "Grim Reaper" is actually his older brother Ragna. Then he quickly shifted to a complete Tsundere.
• Super Speed: Hardly a surprise due to being a wielder of a Katana-type weapon. He can quickly draw his weapon out of it's scabbard to slash in less than a second. and if you look closely at his Sekkajin/Snow Flower Storm move, he even uses one of his feet... which you can't clearly see in-game due to how fast he executes each slash.
• Sword Beam: One of his Distortion Drives, Touga Hyoujin.
• Tall, Dark and Handsome
• Tall, Dark and Snarky: Not really dark. But tall? Yes. Snarky? Double-yes.
• Teen Genius
• Token Evil Teammate: Despite a Face Turn, he still is a colossal jackass (amped Up to Eleven when it comes to Noel) and not exactly letting go of his Nietzche Wannabe tendencies. He fared better than the other one, Kokonoe, since with Jubei at helm on training him, he could be losing his 'Token Evil' status.
• Tomato in the Mirror: He is Hakumen.
• Took a Level in Badass: The first time he broke free of Yukianesa's grip.
• Took a Level in Jerkass: Tsubaki, Makoto and even Noel noted that he was nicer before his involvement in Ikaruga War compared to his behavior post war, although they mistakenly blamed PTSD (it was actually because of a Laser-Guided Amnesia).
• Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Continuum Shift eventually reveals that this is actually a case of Laser-Guided Amnesia inflicted by Terumi.
• Tsundere: Type A, and how!
  • Jin is very heavy on the Tsuntsun directed towards other people. His Deredere can only be seen when around Ragna or Tsubaki.
  • As if you don't know, Arc Systems Works recently released a Fan CD called: "BlazBlue Fan Disc Tsundere CD" starring Jin and Rachel; proving even more of Jin's Tsundere Complex.
• Villain with Good Publicity: Jin is a famous hero in the world of BlazBlue for his actions in the war against Ikaruga.
• Why Won't You Die?: Says this in one of his Calamity Trigger Story Mode paths when Nu refuses to stay down.
• World of Cardboard Speech: Delivered at the end of his Continuum Shift storyline, and a little heavy on the exclamation marks.

A hapless Lieutenant in the NOL serving under Jin Kisaragi. She trained at the academy along with Jin, Tsubaki Yayoi, Makoto Nanaya and Carl Clover. When Jin rushes off to hunt down Ragna without permission, Noel is assigned to stop him and bring him back to The Library. The guns she wields are the Arcus Diabolus: Bolverk, and are also a Nox Nyctores. Her drive ability Chain Revolver lets her perform a multitude of chain combos. She suffers from amnesia. Her Astral Finish has her creating a magical seal around her opponent and shooting them repeatedly with her guns. She then detonates the seal from within by clashing the butts of the guns together.

The Material Collection reveals that she was a war orphan adopted by the noble Vermillion family. When the Vermillion family were at risk from losing their status, Noel made the decision to join the NOL in exchange for ensuring the future of her ailing father and mother. The one condition imposed by her parents was that she had to apply for non-combatant work, but after breaking all existing records for ars magus aptitude (the most important condition for Academy admittance), she was placed into a combatant program against her will. Despite her average grades, after graduation, she was placed as secretary to the newly promoted "Hero of Ikaruga", although her actual job is to spy on Jin and kill him if necessary.

In Continuum Shift, she goes to visit Jin in the hospital, but finds that he's gone AWOL and decides to pursue him. She's unaware that her old friend Tsubaki has been given orders by Terumi to assassinate her.

• A-Cup Angst: BIG. TIME. It doesn't help her self-esteem that she's mistaken for a boy... and a cutting board.
  • Two of her soundbytes in the Gallery are "Don't talk about my breasts!" in differing tones
  • And it's getting to be a Running Gag for her in Continuum Shift, where it even comes to a point where she accidentally admits it herself in her victory speech against Taokaka in Arcade Mode:

• Big No: She drops these a lot, like in her winquote against Arakune because of her fear of bugs, and when Nirvana destroys her marriage registration in Rachel's Continuum Shift joke ending.

• Brother-Sister Incest: Sorta-kinda, if you ship her with Ragna or Jin, as she is a clone of their younger sister Saya.
• Brought Down to Normal: After she loses the power of the "Eye" because Terumi no longer has any use for her.

• Covert Pervert: There's a scene wherein she (for a split second) contemplates second base because she heard from someone that her chest would be bigger if a dude massages them, but got flustered at the thought.
  • Additionally, in the drama CD, she is more savvy about sexual relationships than Jin. Note that she is way younger than him.
• Cuteness Proximity: In her Calamity Trigger joke ending, she responds to a very drunk Litchi's pet miniature panda with rapt attention. In fact, she allows Litchi to dress her up if she let's her pet the panda. She completely zones out while she's petting it. "Ooookaaay..."
• Dangerously-Short Skirt: Her choice of uniform is a ruffled minidress, apparently apathetic to the idea of getting a Panty Shot while using Gun Kata and Gun Fu.
• Detached Sleeves: Which shows off her back as well.
• Even the Girls Want Her: Both in-universe (Litchi and Makoto, to an extent) and in real life (several female Dustloop members seem to be quite interested in her).
• Fish Out of Temporal Water: She is actually Mu -12-, the predecessor of Nu -13-. Her memories start to fade after her fight with Hakumen, and in her ending, she enters a state of Laser-Guided Amnesia, repeating the words "Who am I?" in a Creepy Monotone, much like her successor. Even creepier when she starts acting exactly like Nu -13-.

• Gun Kata: To such an extent that many of her moves were actually modeled after stances and attacks used by the warrior-priests of Equilibrium.

• Heroic BSOD: As soon as she sees Lambda in Continuum Shift, a painful reminder of things she wants to forget forces its way forward and she freaks the hell out.
• Image Song: Her voice actress sings a vocal version of her theme "Bullet Dance" called "Love so Blue Aoi Heartbeats". She also speaks as both Noel and Nu during the song after the second verse.
• Lethal Chef: On full display in her Joke ending in Continuum Shift: everyone but Hazama ends up throwing up when she has to take over as chef for a restaurant. Probably because she has no sense of taste. Sadly, she enjoys cooking a great deal.

(Description of Noel's cooking): "What that 'something' was defied description. It didn't sit on the plate so much as squat malevolently, hating all and being hated by all..."

• • Since Hazama a.k.a. Terumi is sustained by hatred, it actually makes sense that he would enjoy a dish that embodies hate so well.
  • And just to show just how vile her cooking is, "RIOT" is being played while it's being served.
• Limited Wardrobe: With her own clothes torn to shreds and in possession of odd (if hot) armor, the wanted criminal goes home to find a spare NOL uniform.
  • Well, at the time, they are in an NOL facility. Shouldn't be too hard to find a spare uniform. Plus, because she's wearing the longocat and beret combo, we don't know she's wearing her uniform.
• Living MacGuffin: Just as everyone's looking for Ragna in the first game, everyone's looking for Noel in the second.
• Madness Mantra: In regards to her chest: "ITDOESN'TMATTERITDOESN'TMATTERITDOESN'TMATTERITDOESN'TMATTERITDOESN'TMATTER!!!"
• Magic Skirt: As a consequence of constantly fighting in a Dangerously-Short Skirt, the thing swirls around so much, that it's bred a bunch of rumors of her Going Commando.
• Meaningful Name: She was born on Christmas Day.
• Mind Control: Yukianesa isn't the only Nox Nyctores that influences its master's mind; Bolverk does it too, but in a more positive way. Instead of encouraging her towards sadism, it seems to mute her feelings of nervousness and fear, lending her mechanical efficiency. After losing a fight to her, Bang Shishigami notes that he was thrown off his game by the fact that he detected absolutely no hostile intent from her despite the beating he recieved. During another loop, Rachel accuses Noel of relying too much on Bolverk to maintain her composure and takes the guns away from her, whereupon Noel collapses into a helpless puddle of tears. Turns out Bolverk isn't just muting Noel's fear and indecisiveness in battle; it's also constantly suppressing the subconscious Omnicidal Maniac desires attached to her forgotten memories of being a Murakumo unit. Getting her mad enough that Bolverk's seal breaks is all part of Terumi's plan to make her into Kusanagi, the God-Slayer. Presumably, Bolverk may be the only reason she can stand to use her Muzzle Flitter attack, especially if she really is Going Commando, but even if she isn't.
• Ms. Fanservice: As the games' poster character, this is unsurprising.
• Mysterious Waif
• Nice Hat: So nice it makes Jin less an asshole to her if she's wearing it.
• Norse Mythology: Her guns are named Bolverk, her Distortion Drives are called Zero Gun: Fenrir and Zero Gun: Thor, and her Astral Heat is called Valkyrie Veil. She also shouts out the name of various runes from ye olde alphabet while smacking people with her Drive ability. Unused move names (heard in the sound test menu) include Gungnir and Hel.

• Reality Warper: In Continuum Shift, Noel gains the power of "the Eye". Essentially, this means that amongst the thousands and thousands of possible timelines, whatever timeline Noel "observes" becomes the "real" timeline. Essentially, she gets the power to create the default timeline, and everything else becomes a mere possibility.
• Remember the New Guy?: She didn't exist in the original timeline, and now that she does, Terumi stuck her in Tsubaki's "original" place, all as part of his plan to use Tsubaki's jealousy as an in-road to mind-raping her into a Face Heel Turn.
• Robot Girl: She's Nu -13-'s predecessor/old sister, Mu -12-.
• Sexy Backless Outfit
• Shipper on Deck: Noel is clearly a fangirl for Jin X Tsubaki.
• Ship Tease: Her ending has this with Ragna, of all people! But then again, she's possibly a clone of Jin and Ragna's disappeared sister. Bet you didn't see that one coming.
  • The idea of having feelings for him actually crosses her mind at the beginning of her Story Mode in Continuum Shift, followed by a Suspiciously Specific Denial.
• Shrinking Violet: "Likes: shopping over the Internet (so that she doesn't have to talk to people)." This is also the personality she reverts to once you take her Bolverk handguns away from her.
• Skill Gate Characters: Will overwhelm newbies with her spam-friendly Chain Revolvers.
• Small Girl, Big Gun: Her Zero-Gun Modes. The end. Distortion Finish!
• Spanner in the Works: Noel's supposed to be dead in the "normal", Phase 0 timeline; as such, her very existence messes with the plans of the Takamagahara (and her yanking Ragna out of the cauldron, far more so). Terumi, being one step ahead of everyone, has taken every possible advantage so far, but as of the end of Continuum Shift, he's also decided he doesn't need her for anything anymore...
• Special Guest: She appears in Queen's Gate Spiral Chaos as a replacement for Kasumi along with Wonder Momo, due to Tecmo-Koei's refusal to allow Kasumi to appear in that game. Cue to potential hilarity when she meets Cattleya along the way.
• Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Invoked by Terumi. Noel may be, quite possibly, the least-qualified and least-talented member of the NOL that we're aware of, but she still ended up in a decent position far above her friend Tsubaki. It turns out that this was deliberately orchestrated by Terumi so that he could use her as the Kusanagi unit later down the line and Mind Rape Tsubaki into pulling a Face Heel Turn to get revenge on her for unwittingly stealing her role in life.
• Synchronization: In Continuum Shift, Hazama established a "life-link" with her, which prevents either of them from being killed unless they both die, and at the same time. This is apparently broken when she loses the power of the "Eye".
• This Is Unforgivable!: She flies into a rage and says this to Hazama when he reveals to her that he was using Tsubaki to greatly and deeply hurt her so much, for his own amusement. She gets so angry that she breaks Bolverk's seals on her emotions, allowing Hazama to turn her back into Mu -12-, the True Successor of the Azure. Just As Planned.
• Tomato in the Mirror: She's a cyborg clone, the Inheritor of the Azure, the Eye of the Master Unit... and also technically the sister of her queen, her commanding officer and the world's most notorious criminal. That's a lot to take in, in a single day.
• Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Or Laser-Guided Amnesia.
• What Beautiful Eyes!: So much that even Hazama is in love with them.

Vampiric Badass Gothic Lolita. Rachel is the rightful heir to the Alucard house. She hates being bored, so she heads out to the real world with her familiars Nago and Gii in tow to view the current state of events. She's also Ragna's Stalker with a Crush, although it's more out of a mix of concern and boredom than actual love. Her Drive ability, Silpheed, allows her to control the wind.

It's stated in her ending that she hates her vampiric impulses, but had no choice in using them. By doing so, she ended up biting a young boy with jade-colored eyes, Ragna. She also seems to care for him and the other characters, in a thoroughly backwards fashion. She also knows about the instabilities in the space time continuum, which caused her boredom in the first place, and is attempting to Set Right What Once Went Wrong. Her Astral Finish lifts the opponent above a large crucifix as a thunderbolt strikes them dead.

In Continuum Shift, she releases Hakumen from his imprisonment by Kokonoe, and both of them work together to find Terumi. Things... don't really go very well for her.

• Animal Motifs: Thanks to Ragna's boisterous way of speaking, many fans have started comparing her to a "Rabbit".
• Bait and Switch Boss: In Hakumen's Continuum Shift Arcade Mode path, where she makes way for Tager.
• Berserk Button:
  • Don't call her a stalker.
  • Implying that she holds feelings for Ragna is another way to invite abuse.
• Big Good: The closest the game has to one, sharing the spot with Jubei.
• Blessed with Suck: As an Observer, she has a perfect memory and cannot forget anything, even if she tried. Not even a single moment of the hundreds and hundreds of iterations of the Stable Time Loop, or the many thousands of variations caused by the continuum shift.
• Blow You Away: Her Drive, Sylpheed.
• Boring Insult: Says this to Hazama in her bad ending, claiming that Ragna is a more interesting man than he is. She gets a foot in her mouth for it, but props for keeping her cool.
• Butt Monkey: Not her, but Rachel has her familiars whom she cheerfully abuses, uses as both shields, weapons, chairs and even a cushion when she falls down.
• Creepy Cool Crosses: A giant stone one grinds upwards out of the ground in her Astral Finish, apparently for no other reason than looking awesome.

• Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Sword Iris is 22A in Calamity Trigger and 214C in Continuum Shift.
• Dark Is Not Evil: However, it's not exactly nice either.
• Deadpan Snarker: Her snarkiness is doubled in Tutorial Mode.
• Detached Sleeves: If you look closely at some of her sprites, you'll see that under her shawl her sleeves aren't connected to the rest of her dress.
• Difficult but Awesome: The Calamity Trigger version.
• Elegant Gothic Lolita
• Flower Motifs: Red Roses, all over the place. Her attacks and even her stage are full of red rose petals splattering everywhere.
• Gameplay and Story Segregation: She insults anyone who beats her, with the exceptions of Hakumen and Nu-13. Top-tier in Calamity Trigger, low-tier in Continuum Shift.
• Girlish Pigtails: And quite long ones too.
• Good Is Not Nice: She loves insulting everyone, regularly abuses her familiars, and picks fights to amuse herself. But she's undoubtedly on the good side.
• Green-Eyed Monster: Apparently, towards any girl that captures Ragna's undivided attention in a more normal, relaxed atmosphere.
  • This is subtly implied with her reaction upon seeing Ragna dining with Platinum, as well as her joke ending.
  • Her jealously is joked about with a similar situation in in Teach Me, Miss Litchi Reloaded, where the threat of Ragna dining together with Taokaka coerces Rachel into agreeing to provide Tao with lessons on Ars Magus.
• Guide Dang It: Her aerial down+C attack does more hitstun the faster you're falling when you hit. The in-game description doesn't even remotely hint at.
• Idiot Ball: In Continuum Shift. There's nothing else to call it, considering that she doesn't even TRY guarding Noel against Terumi despite knowing that the girl is the inheritor of the True Azure AND the new Eye of the Master Unit.
• In a Single Bound: Can jump THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE STAGE using her drive.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's an arrogant and spiteful young lady, abusive to her familiars, her friends and allies alike, but nonetheless seems to care for the rest of the cast. Well, except for the villains.
• Karma Houdini: She blocks with Gii, but when Rachel gets "hurt", she blocks with Nago. Therefore, Rachel virtually remains unhurt in any battle she fights in.
• Kicking Ass in All Her Finery
• Little Miss Badass
• Moral Dissonance:
  • In Calamity Trigger, she accosts Noel (who, at this point, doesn't even know who she is) without any provocation. Rachel taunts her with all sorts of secrets that she then refuses to share, all the while insulting Noel up and down, before outright attacking and beating up on her. Rachel then steals Bolverk and teleports away, leaving Noel a crying mess, completely unable to function. Since this isn't the cycle where the timeloop is finally broken (and in fact, pretty much singlehandedly guarantees that it won't be), these actions can't have any consequences, as it will all be erased with the next reset. Which means NONE of this is part of any sort of plan; Rachel apparently does it just because she's annoyed that Noel isn't what she wants her to be, and so she wastes one cycle to do nothing but abuse the poor girl to vent her irritation.
  • Similarly in Continuum Shift where she faces Jin (who likewise, at this point, doesn't even know who she is). Jin is barely able to walk, when she abducts him, insults him, challenges him in a fight. Worse in Jin's Bad Ending, she beats him using her unlimited mode, insults him, and finally throws him into the forest to die. Jin is not exactly Mr. Congeniality, but no other character in the game (except Terumi) bullies a heavily injured person without any reason nor provocation. Unlike Bang (who gets reprimanded by Trinity and Kokonoe), no one calls her for this.
• The Ojou
• Our Vampires Are Different
• Out-of-Character Moment: While she's disrespectful almost everyone in cast, she finds Bang quite repulsive in particular even on Gag Reels, still some of her lines for the tutorial in Continuum Shift Rachel calls Bang a gentleman to outright reffer to him without adding any insults, and said insults towards him are much tamer than the ones found in the main story.

• Pet the Dog: When she tells Ragna to never give up during one of the time loops. Doubles as a Ship Tease depending on how one looks at it.
  • Her case with Makoto, starting with saving her from Hazama, also counts.
• Poor Communication Kills: She warns Ragna not to fight Terumi despite the fact that he wants to do so more than anything else, but she doesn't give him a reason. She also warns him not to rely too much on the Azure Grimoire. For some odd reason, she never sees fit to share her suspicions that his Grimoire is a fake, and that Terumi is the one who MADE it, and thus not only knows how to counter it, but likely has a more complete version. Oh, and that if Ragna uses his fake too much, he'll become half a Black Beast. She apparently loves the sound of her own voice except when giving useful explanations.
• Really 72.500 Years Old: At least.
• Rebellious Princess
• Rich Bitch
• Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Herself, along with her familiars/servants Gii, Nago and Valkenhayn are the only ones whom retain their memories of each time loop. This is because she is an Observer: someone tasked by Takamagahara (or another similar power) to observe the various potential timelines. So she can carry out her duty, Takamagahara excludes her from any alterations it makes to the timeline.
• Set Right What Once Went Wrong: What she had been attempting to do for the past few hundred repetitions.
• Ship Tease: Calamity Trigger has the aforementioned ending with Ragna. Continuum Shift lays it on thick, however, to the point where it's nearly impossible to deny that the script intentionally does this. Especially in her bad and joke endings, which are both punctuated with a final line by Rachel intended to cause readers to question the extent of her feelings toward Ragna.
• Shock and Awe: Many of her special attacks, as well as her super and her Astral Finish, involve striking the opponent with electricity. All her victims suffer the effect of X-Ray Sparks as a result. A few notable mentions: Arakune, due to his amorphous biology, has no skeleton; Hazama reveals his ghost form in place of a skeleton; Nu -13- proves that she's a cyborg rather than a robot, as she has a skeleton where as Hakumen, a human soul contained in a mechanical body, does not.
• Something About a Rose
• Spot of Tea: Including ordering it during a boss fight. Really, it sometimes seems like she can't go three minutes without drinking tea.
• Stalker with a Crush: The "crush" part has yet to be fully realized, though they sure love to imply it quite a bit in Continuum Shift, canon or not.

• Theme Naming: Her specials are all named after flowers.
• Time Abyss: She remembers 72,500 years of time-looped existence. Her reaction: boredom.

• Troll: To everyone. Even getting bound by Phantom does not discourage her from insulting Terumi and even managing to get his goat in her Continuum Shift bad ending.

  • In Arc Systems Works recently released Fan CD: "BlazBlue Fan Disc Tsundere CD", Rachel is a host along with the Game's Ultimate Tsundere Jin.
• What the Hell, Hero?:
  • She delivers one to Litchi, after she executed a Face Heel Turn out of desperation. Unfortunately for her, this didn't work, partly because all Rachel saw in her was 'obsessed with Arakune', rather than knowing that she's also dying and really needs the cure. Poor Communication Kills indeed.
  • Inverted when facing Hakumen. He delivers one to Rachel in Continuum Shift: after freeing him and trying to enlist him to her side, she explains that both Takamagahara and Terumi are on the move, due to Noel having become the eye. Hakumen, filled with rage, demands to know why, despite having been through hundreds of time loops and knowing how dangerous Terumi is, she still decides to do nothing but watch.
• Willfully Weak: Story-wise, Rachel's actually one of the most powerful characters, but holds back due to her pride, as well as to avoid being bored. Her "Unlimited" mode, however...
  • Also, if you notice, she never actually gets hit in battles... rather, poor Nago and Gii take all the punishment. And if you hold down 'crouch', she falls asleep in the middle of battle.
• The Woman Behind the Man: It's implied that she was behind Valkenhayn and Carl's actions in Taokaka's Gag Reel.
• Woman in Black
• Yaoi Fangirl: For Jin/Ragna in her joke ending.

The resident Cloudcuckoolander. Tao is a member of a tribe of cat-people living in a small village underneath Kagutsuchi, and is next in line to become the village's protector. To that end, she is training to become a vigilante. Unfortunately... she's incredibly dim and doesn't even realize that the person she's been travelling with (Ragna) is the most wanted criminal in the world. Her species are actually genetically-engineered clones of Jubei, the original Grimalkin. Can be bribed to do ANYTHING if food is involved, and is good friends with Litchi Faye-Ling.

Her Drive ability Dancing Edge lets her perform more confusing maneuvers to attack. Her Astral Finish involves her bouncing off of the walls while slashing her opponent, then performing a drill uppercut, which misses due to Jubei coming in from the left-field and being a sneaky Badass.

Her Arcade and Story Mode may as well be called "ADHD Quest". In Continuum Shift, on the other hand, she's out for a quest to get stronger.

• Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Especially when food is involved.
• Big Eater: Thinks about food pretty much all the time. In fact, she's almost always hungry, to the point of emptying someone else's wallet due to a high tab, or she can be bribed into doing anything in exchange for food. Borderlines on Extreme Omnivore: in Story Mode, where (given the player's choice) she will even try to eat someone (Ragna and Bang can fall victim to this). And even in Arcade Mode, when fighting Litchi, will cause the latter to rant about not eating her steamed buns.
  • She even thinks that little girls are food.
• Blood Knight: With the sort of innocent enthusiasm that only a childlike Nigh Invulnerable Super Soldier can properly muster.
• Breaking the Fourth Wall: Mostly during the Teach me, Ms.Litchi segments, but she also looks up close into the TV screen during one of her entrances and if you hold down crouch.
• Calling Your Attacks: She doesn't so much name her attacks, but loves to provide verbal sound effects for them.
  • Unless she's facing Arakune, in which most cases she has several new names for her attacks, mostly containing 'squiggly' as part of them.
• Catgirl
• Cat Smile: When she's not grinning, she often sports one of these, especially if she's being coy.
• Character Development: Tao seems to have acquired a bit of an intelligence boost for Continuum Shift, even going as far as reciting a medical fact she "remembered" to Bang in his Arcade story. And let's not forget how you can make her remember things in the new Teach Me, Miss Litchi segments.
• Cheshire Cat Grin
• Clone Degeneration: One possible explanation for the generalized senility of the Kaka. The Elder seems pretty tightly put-together though.
• Cloudcuckoolander: So much of one that she causes Nu to have a BSOD when she tries to comprehend Tao with logic.
• Covert Pervert: Taokaka shows signs of this. Her primary target, Litchi, seems completely oblivious though. Exactly what is "covert" about grabbing somebody's meat buns? The fact that there's a fairly good chance she's innocent enough that she's doing it without even realizing why it's improper to do so.
• Darkskinned Blonde
• The Ditz: She has the "special ability" to forget anything she does... in three steps or seconds, whichever comes first. Continuum Shift reveals this includes meeting Ragna as a child. That said, she does seem to be getting better.
• Dumb Blonde

• The Faceless: Possibly subverted: she presumably has a face, but it's... well... always covered with shadow.
  • Confirmed to be wearing a mask in Calamity Trigger's "Teach Me, Ms. Litchi!" segments and later by the developers.
• Fastball Special: Kitty Litter Special throws random objects, including a very surprised Kaka kitten.
• Foreshadowing: Her joke ending in Calamity Trigger, a trailer for a fake movie, "revealed" that Litchi would become a villain. Guess what happened in Continuum Shift...
• Fragile Speedster: She has two very fast command jumps (including a Wall Jump), her Drive offers a lot of mobility options, and she's the only character (other than Bang) with a triple jump. However, with low defense and only one projectile, it easy to be knocked out quick by the opponent if you don't use Tao with care.
• Fun Personified: Even Ragna can't help but smile around her.
• Genki Girl
• Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: In Continuum Shift, whenever Tao fights Ragna, she proclaims that she's hungry and he says she eats way too much. Regardless of the outcome, Ragna has to pay.

(If Tao wins) Taokaka: "Lunch is on you, Good Guy!" (If Tao loses) Ragna: "Alright, alright, I'll buy you some lunch."

• Hey, You: Normally doesn't call the characters by their real names. Instead, she gives them names like White Guy Ragna, Good Guy Ragna after he feeds her (she calls him this at all times in the story mode of Continuum Shift), Scruffy Man Bang, Shorty Carl, Super-not-soft person Ada/Nirvana, Hat Person Noel, Lacking Lady Noel (after she notices her chest), Black Squiggly Arakune, Boobie Lady Litchi, Flappy Nu-13 and Mu-12 (due to their pre-battle outfits), Red Lady/Eye Woman Tsubaki, Green Guy/Scary Guy Hazama/Terumi, Ice Man Jin, Bunny Person Rachel, Big Guy Tager, Tail Lady Kokonoe, Cat Person Jubei, Mask Man Hakumen, Fluffy Lady Makoto, and Butter Person Valkenhayn.
• Hyperspace Arsenal: Always carries a plate with her in case she comes across food, as well as other things such as fishbones, baseballs, bombs, pillows, apple cores, bowling balls, and even kaka kittens, which she can throw at her opponents.
• Idiot Hero: So, very, very, very much...
  • To the point that she doesn't realize the "good guy" she's hanging out with is the guy she's supposed to be hunting.
• In the Name of the Moon: "In the name of... the big white thingy in the night sky! Tao shall punish you!"
• Is It Something You Eat?: One of her first responses to any new concept.
• The Lancer: Ever since Continuum Shift, she's been evolving into one of these for Ragna. She's also one of the few characters that he seems legitimately happy to be in the company of.
• Lethal Joke Character: Word of God is that she's supposed be to the game's Dan, except she doesn't suck quite as badly; in fact, she's rather deadly.
  • Ironically, Bang is Calamity Trigger's Dan.
  • Tao's unlimited form is one of the strongest out of everyone in Continuum Shift. Even though it takes a second longer to charge up, 3 standard D attacks will finish off everyone execpt Tager (who requires 4).
• LOLcats: "Don't want" (presumably the voice actor ad-libbing a more memetic "do not want") and "*nom nom nom*" appear in her English script.
• Lovable Sex Maniac: Tao will grope anyone with decent sized boobs, and give her (rather frank) opinion about her victim's chest. At one point, this resulted in her accidentally started feeling up the rock-hard chest of Bang Shishigami. She was, of course, looking for Litchi in her clinic, but Bang was the only one there.
  • Though, given her personality, it's probably not perverted or sexual in nature. She just finds them fun since they're bouncy and squishy.
• Male Gaze: Her sprites in Continuum Shift have been modified with more well-developed boobs like Litchi, meaning she might be starting to grow up.
  • This official piece of art (one of the unlocked gallery pictures in Calamity Trigger) show that Tao has always had a bit of this going on even in the original. She just was wearing a pretty baggy coat this whole time.
• Morality Pet: For an Anti-Hero rather than an outright villain, but in Continuum Shift, she is the only person that Ragna seems to genuinely consider a friend; even promising to play with her some day and taking a nap with her. Everybody else falls between being tolerated and him just not caring about them.
• More Teeth Than the Osmond Family: One of two discernible facial features of Taokaka is a mouth full of lots and lots of sharp pointy teeth. And like Kamineko, she is still hilariously adorable.
• My Significance Sense Is Tingling: In one of the Teach Me, Miss Litchi segments in Continuum Shift, Tao explains that she remembers the general history of how Ars Magus came to be, but still doesn't know the real important stuff like Nox Nyctores. She says that she's close to finding the person who can properly teach her because her spid... uhh Kaka senses are tingling.
• The Nicknamer:
  • Since she can't remember anything for long she has a habit of giving other people nicknames right after meeting them, such as "scruffy man" for Bang or "Bunny person" for Rachel. Some of her nicknames for other characters were even adopted by the fandom, the most well-known of which is probably "Boobie Lady" for Litchi.
  • Continuum Shift suggests that she does know peoples' names but prefers to call them by nicknames. By this point, she's aware that "good guy" is actually Ragna and actually refers to him as such when someone asks her what she means by "good guy". She learns Tsubaki's name, but still insists on calling her "red lady" because of her hair color.
  • It repeats itself in Continuum Shift II, on Platinum's Arcade Mode, Tao is asked if she knows a man named Bang Shishigami, Tao replies with "Hmm, Bang Shishigami? Oh, you mean the Scruffy Man!". So it's pretty clear that can keep up with the names, but she just likes the nicknames that much.
    • Sadly, she doesn't spell Bang's name correctly in the English dub of this scene.
• No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: "I'mma Beat The Crap Outta You!" is Exactly What It Says on the Tin.

A giant man-cyborg on steroids. Tager was a commander in the NOL at one point until he suffered major injuries during the Ikaruga Civil War. He was modified and healed by Kokonoe with cybernetic implants and now works for a secret organization known as "Sector Seven". His main objective involves bringing Hakumen to Kokonoe. He is sent out to capture Noel in Continuum Shift.

His Drive ability Voltic Battler magnetizes the opponent and allows him to draw him/her closer with certain attacks. His Astral Finish makes him do a ridiculously exaggerated version of his Distortion Drive in which he lifts the opponent high into the sky and crashes them down into the Earth.

• Achey Scars: In Continuum Shift, he now has a scar on his face.
• Amazing Technicolor Population: Reddish-orange skin. Coupled with his high stature, musculature and fangs, he looks like a traditional portrayal of a Japanese Oni. Amusingly, while he looks like a Red Oni, his personality is befitting of a Blue Oni.
• Awesomeness By Analysis: "You're within my estimates."

• Bait and Switch Boss in Hakumen's Continuum Shift Arcade Mode path, where Rachel makes way for him.
• Body Horror: The second extra scenario in Continuum Shift II confirmed what Calamity Trigger implied in its story modes: Kokonoe "created" Tager by making him part-demon.
• Brains and Brawn: With Kokonoe. Though Tager is far from stupid, it's fairly obvious which one of them is which.
• Butt Monkey: In several Help Me! Prof. Kokonoe! segments, especially in Arakune's, where Kokonoe dresses him up as a Meido... and then uses him as a vacuum cleaner to clean up the squiggly mess Arakune left behind... through his mouth.
• Calling Your Attacks: A big offender.
• Chekhov's Gun: In Continuum Shift, it was revealed that Tager had witnessed some kind of horrifying event that slaughtered countless people. In Continuum Shift II, we found out just what it was: the process of creating Nu killed almost everybody in Sector Seven.
• The Comically Serious: Comes with being the straight man to almost everyone else.
• Damn You, Muscle Memory!: King of Tager is hold A+ B+ C and mash D in Calamity Trigger, 1080+ D in Continuum Shift. If you like using it... Fun fact: Tager is the first fighting character to take the 720 motion one step further to its logical extreme
  • Awesome Yet Practical: If you get it off, and the opponent is magnetized, it almost always guarantees the end of the match. It's arguably the best Astral Heat in the game if you can pull off the three circles, and if you can build up a full meter and avoid using more than one burst. Even after Continuum Shift II, where many characters lost the ability to put their Astrals to practical use (Jin, Bang, Tsubaki and Mu, to name a few), Tager can still combo into his Astral off of a Spark Bolt. The only characters left who can combo into their Astrals are Ragna, Noel, Arakune (while opponent is cursed), Tsubaki, Hazama, Makoto and Valkenhayn. Platinum can do this too, but it's extremely difficult to pull off and requires the opponent be trapped in a Dream Sally bubble.
• Face of a Thug: Tager's appearance, as noted above, is reminiscent of a Japanese Oni, and he is indeed very intimidating looking despite being really a nice guy who is just doing his job. Off-game, when the demo of Calamity Trigger revealed him as one of the playable characters, everyone almost immediately though he would be a villain. In-game, his menacing appearance makes him stand out like no other, and at least one person attacked him because of his looks. To be fair though, that person was Bang.
• First-Person Smartass: Read his thoughts in his Continuum Shift story mode. He has a surprising amount of snark in him.
• Genius Bruiser: He's the Spiritual Successor of Potemkin, what else do you expect?

• In a Single Bound: When using Genesic Emerald Tager Buster, he jumps really, really high. In King of Tager, he jumps out of the atmosphere.
• Informed Ability: He is supposed to be around 550kg, but everyone else can still toss him around like normal.
• Instant Death Radius: High-level AIs or skilled players will make his enemies regret getting into grab range.
• Invulnerable Attack: Had some, gained more as part of Continuum Shift buffs.
• Laser-Guided Amnesia: Continuum Shift II's extra scenario revealed that the injuries he sustained during the creation of Nu erased most of his memory. Hazama temporarily unlocks it during Tager's story path via the power of Mind Rape.
• Meido: He shows up in this outfit during Arakune's Help Me! Dr. Kokonoe! segment.
• Meteor Move: Doing these online will invoke many an Oh Crap/This Is Gonna Suck from your opponents.
• Mighty Glacier: Continuum Shift speed buffs are shifting him towards Lightning Bruiser. And then there's Unlimited Tager...
• Mind Rape: Undergoes one in Continuum Shift, delivered by - surprise surprise - Terumi, who uses Ouroboros to mess with his emotions, which temporarily unlocks his memories from the Ikaruga Civil War.

• Only Known by Their Nickname: Litchi and Kokonoe are the only characters that call Tager by his name. Everyone else refers to him as "The Red Devil".

• Rated "M" for Manly: Second to only Bang. If they do not rate over to Bang, they rate on Tager. Could be a reason why he garners more popularity in the West.

• Ship Tease: A noticeable amount, both ways, with Kokonoe.
• Skill Gate Characters: He was low tier in Calamity Trigger and rarely used except by people who knew how to correctly use him. In Continuum Shift, he's still low tier, but much easier to use due to being generally faster. His high damage output and his Gadget Finger guessing games make him widely hated by new players, but expert players who know how to keep him at arm's length and not get magnetized can skillfully dissect him.
• Skunk Stripe
• Stone Wall: He can't dash and moves slow, but has the highest HP and defense of all.
• Talk to the Fist: In his joke ending, he punches Bang while the latter is calling an attack.
• This Trope Is Bleep: In 'Teach Me, Ms. Litchi', he covered up Kokonoe dreaming up to put enhancement on his balls penis GIGANTIC TAGER!!!
• Took A Level In Character Tiers: More like 4 levels. His Continuum Shift incarnation is frightening.
  • As of Continuum Shift II, he's now more frightening than before. Apparently he has new combos, his magnetism pulls in farther and is more accurate, and some of his moves have super armor. Be afraid. Very afraid.
  • While Tager got buffs on Continuum Shift and Continuum Shift II, he was still quite craptastic, being always the resident low tier of the game, now on Continum Shift Extend, it seems that even when he still has problematic matchups, he no longer feels like the worst character on the game
• Undying Loyalty: Kokonoe could be an Omnicidal Maniac for all he cared and he would still be loyal to her.
• Wrestler in All of Us
• You Are Number Six: His code name is TR-0009, though he's the only one who addresses himself as such in-game, and even then, it's at the start of his missions.
• You Will Not Evade Me: Normal Tager cannot dash. He compensates by using his magnetism to draw his opponents to him.

Litchi Faye-Ling

IT'S THE BOOBIE LADY!

A renowned doctor living in Kagutsuchi. She was Kokonoe's assistant and Tager's co-worker until Arakune's mutation, which caused her to go AWOL. She defends the local townspeople from Arakune and is trying to restore him to his former self by any means necessary, even through death. She also seems to respect Bang and even goes off apologizing if she ever beats him in combat. Her Drive ability Mantenbo levitates her staff and allows the player to control it as a separate entity. She gained her combat abilities from the Boundary in the same way Arakune did. Her Astral Finish can only be done while she's on top of her staff. She performs a diving kick, then performs a 99-hit bicycle kick in the opponent's face, then kicks them backwards.

The console version has her host her own Fourth Wall Mail Slot show called "Teach me, Ms. Litchi!"/"Tell me, Dr. Litchi!", drawn in chibi where she asks various characters to explain the backstory to Taokaka. Every character in the story shows up except Arakune, Hakumen and Nu, although some are less successful than others at teaching. Oddly, Litchi does very little teaching of her own.

The Material Collection reveals that during her tenure in Sector Seven, she used to be close to Roy/Arakune, but after a bad argument, their relationship broke apart. Her specialty is oriental medicine.

As of Continuum Shift, she's looking for Kokonoe to help find Arakune.

• Ambiguously Bi: Well, how else do you explain her fondness for making girls cosplay? Also, she apparently spent a good deal of time "examining" Noel's body prior to one of the "Teach Me, Miss Litchi! Reloaded" segments.
• Anime Chinese Girl
• Anti-Villain: Type IV. Her only 'villainous' quality is that she's with NOL. Her other traits are all screaming 'Good' and 'Sympathetic'.
  • Anti-Villainous Breakdown: She broke when she encountered Rachel, citing that the only person that could help her refused her, making her go down her path. Unfortunately, Rachel doesn't even care, thinking that she's just obsessed.
• Bittersweet Ending: Unlike most Alternate Endings, Litchi's alternate ending had her kill Arakune, but in process, she only had two or six months to live, and lost many of her memories, especially for Arakune, and she didn't need to join NOL. Thankfully, Kokonoe and Tager took after her clinic and Kokonoe shows a tender side, determined to save Litchi from her short lifespan.
  • Downer Ending: With Fridge Horror played, it just means that Kokonoe will fail because she arrived too late, and Litchi at best will die and make those who cared about her grief for her loss, or turn into the next Arakune and eats them all before she'll be killed eventually. It wasn't that Bittersweet.
• Boobs of Steel: Moreso in Continuum Shift when she becomes Top Tier. Also, her Astral Heat: 100 hits, 20K damage total. Top that.
• Bottle Fairy: Her bio said her personality depends on whatever sake she had in her. Said profile also says she becomes "insistent" when drunk.
• Chekhov's Cough: In Continuum Shift. It's a sign that her body is degrading due to the Boundary's power.
• Combat Medic
• Cool Big Sis: She likes acting like one. Especially to Taokaka.
• The Corruptible: Litchi's Fatal Flaw is her Guilt Complex, Samaritan Syndrome and stubborn stance in terms of saving Arakune, which means all methods become acceptable, and she never told anyone about this. Terumi saw through this and managed to get her to join NOL by telling her that NOL may have the information about saving him... after Kokonoe refused to help her.
• Cosplay Otaku Girl: Look at what she did to Noel... Apparently, in Continuum Shift, she does that to Tsubaki too.
• Damsel in Distress: A severe Deconstruction. Litchi knew she's in distress and only Kokonoe can save her, but Kokonoe flat out refused, preferring to deal with her own business. This eventually caused Litchi to go over to NOL because no one else would help, but deep down, her mentalism is in complete distress.
• The Dark Chick: Her position as of the NOL's Five-Bad Band, along with their Sixth Ranger (with high chance to become a Sixth Ranger Traitor). Unlike how she is pegged as an Evil Genius due to her expertise, Litchi is first and foremost a very emotional woman, thus fitting the 'Chick' part better.
• Difficult but Awesome: Not exactly a Scrub Top-Tier character, however. You'll need to spend extra time to master her to unlock her Top Tier potential (unlike some easy top tiers like Ragna and Bang).
• Dramatic Irony: In both ways. The fact that Litchi is in NOL has the adverse effect of probably getting Carl back to path of psychosis if he learns about this particular fact of 'betrayal'. Likewise, while the audience knows, Litchi doesn't know that there is a certain Nox Nyctores that rends the Boundary, the Phoenix Rettenjou, and it's in Bang's possession, which if she knew, would've made her think twice of going over to NOL.
• Expressive Shirt: Her expressive Panda hairpin.
• Fatal Flaw: Her inability to finally accept that Arakune needs to be let go and her Guilt Complex leads to her making a very questionable decision in Continuum Shift.
  • She has another: her complete refusal to share her burdens with her friends which could give her emotional support also led to no one noticing her actual problems, thereby, like Rachel, just chalks her down as 'Obsessed selfish woman'. It could be because she doesn't want her friends to suffer like her though.
• Forced Into Evil: Litchi is at first not interested in working with Hazama, as he's Obviously Evil, and even after when he reveals that he may know of a way to save Arakune, she still resisted, but it's only after Kokonoe flats out refuse to help her, and she realized that her corruption is already on extremely high level, and it's only a matter of time until she completely succumbs, that she is forced to take up Hazama's offer unless she wants to rot away and turn to the next Arakune. She's really reluctant as she already knew Hazama is bad news, multiplied with very much disgusted at what Relius attempts to kill Carl, but is ultimately cornered in something where no one else could (or want) to help. This is what differs her from doing the good ol' Face Heel Turn.
• Fourth Wall Mail Slot: "Teach me, Dr. Litchi!"
• Friend to All Children: She shows a lot of love and concern for the kaka kittens, the Ronin Gai children and, of course, Carl.
  • Shotacon: YMMV, but some her words and actions hint towards her being very interested in Carl, such as her Cooldown Hug, where she places Carl's head in her cleavage, and this little gem:

Bang: What, is my word not good enough for you?! Why are you asking Carl?! Litchi: Oh? No real reason. Ohohoho.

• Gag Boobs: This should be pretty obvious.
• Gainaxing: Definitely her bouncing in her standing still pose. Also happens with Litchi's Ittsuu move (when her staff wraps around her) and when she's walking forward, which itself is rather seductive. Weirdly subverted when she's walking backwards; apparently, it takes just one hand of hers to keep those boobies in check.
• Good Samaritan: The majority of her personality. If a person is in need of help, especially when they're abandoned by everyone else, Litchi will come in and try to give help. Ask Linhua, Kaka clan or even Arakune (despite how much he doesn't want any). Also even if she's in NOL, she still willingly hugged a distraught Carl, who should be none of her concern, to calm him down, like the Trope Maker himself.
• Guilt Complex: She's very easy to blame herself over something that wasn't majorly her fault. Not just Arakune, she also beats herself for not being able to give the Kaka clan their reproduction solution that quick.
• Happy Fun Ball: That cute little panda hairclip Litchi wears? It's a seithr-enhancement device that allows her to animate her polearm and use Ars Magus. It does this by siphoning power from the Boundary- the land of the dead- and continued use will result in Litchi becoming as tainted as Arakune. Also subverted as it seems that it also works as a limiter to her corruption since she should've turned like Arakune as of the current.
• Hero Antagonist: By the end of Continuum Shift. She still has the best intention and sanity to act like a decent human being. Her allegiance, on the other hand, made her antagonistic.
• Heroic Sacrifice: In Carl's true ending in Calamity Trigger. Thankfully, she's alive in the current timeline, as evidenced by Continuum Shift.
• Horrible Judge of Character: Subverted. Litchi knows that NOL means bad news, Hazama is REALLY suspicious, and she clearly disapproves Relius' attempt in Offing the Offspring. Still, since they're the only option to save Arakune, and she's getting desperate, she pretty much ignored everything else and joined them, still believing that they might keep their promise.
• Hospital Hottie
• Hot Scientist: She used to work for Sector 7 under Kokonoe until the Arakune incident, and she's seen in a lab coat in Tager's Arcade Ending. It's hinted in Tager's Story Mode that Kokonoe wants Litchi back, and Tager resorts to beating her up when she refuses (fortunately for her, Juubei intervenes). Of course chances are this is where she got her doctor skills.
• I Have the High Ground: Played down on coolness: more for function... after planting her staff on the ground, she can hop on to it (standing on one leg to boot!) and hit opponents from there. Some players have made impressive combos with it. Required for her Astral Finish.
• It Is Pronounced "Tro-PAY": Her name is supposed to be pronounced "Lie-chi".
• Lady in Red
• Lady of War: She's still a very classy fighter with lots of reserves and grace in her fighting style, and very feminine.
• Love Interest: Of Bang, and it's very one-sided.
• Love Makes You Crazy: Crazy enough to... corrupt herself with the Boundary just to understand the corruption and find the cure (and this is from backstory!).
• Love Martyr
• Kindhearted Cat Lover: Of course. Why else did she bother to teach up the cats?
• Meganekko: Only in one instance is she seen without her glasses... after getting beaten by Tager in his Story Mode. Too bad her eyes are closed.
• Megaton Punch: She does this to Bang Shishigami in her story mode, and that's after she loses to a fight she challenged him to.
• Ms. Fanservice: Christ.
• Must Make Amends: She feels responsible for creating Arakune, but unlike Tager, she seems dead set on restoring him.
• My Greatest Failure: Arakune.
• My Name Is Not Boobie Lady: "It's not 'Boobie Lady', it's 'Dr. Litchi'!"
• Nice Girl: If she isn't a Chinese Yamato Nadeshiko already, she'd be this. Especially when everyone else was still treating Bang like a joke, as of Continuum Shift, Litchi has always been genuinely nice to him and always refer him as a good person.
• Only Sane Woman: Litchi is pretty much the sole character with no direct interest in Ragna, and compared to the rest to the cast, she seems to possess the straightest noblest goal: protect the people and find a cure for her friend. Unfortunately, this ends up subverted in Continuum Shift when Arakune, in a brief moment of sanity, warns her that she might end up corrupted/crazy like him due to tapping power to the Boundary.
  • Also became one for the antagonist team. Really, compare her with: Terumi, Relius, Saya and Tsubaki...
• Pandaing to the Audience: Her Panda hairpin, which turns out in one of the comedic story mode branches to be alive and very fluffy. And some "other" things.
• Purple Eyes
• Rapunzel Hair: Usually kept on a ponytail that is already LONG, it gets let loose during her winpose, when losing after a timeup or after she gets beaten in Tager's Story mode. (see Slipknot Ponytail below).
• Red And Black And All Around Evil: Averted at first. Lady in Red on Black Bra and Panties, but still the nicest character in the cast. Subverted later: she becomes a member of NOL which makes her look like a bad guy... but she still retained her goodness and morality, and was in fact Forced Into Evil as a Type IV Anti-Villain.
• Samaritan Syndrome: An alternate way to describe her devotion. Litchi can't stand to see a lot of people suffering, especially after that incident and to her, Arakune is one person needing help the most.
• Say My Name: Twice, first during Bang's story if he lost against Hakumen... "Bang? Bang! BAAAAANNNNGGG!!!" And then, during the 7th episode of 'Teach me, Ms. Litchi!' "Baaaaang.... Baaaanggg...".
• Sex Is Violence: In Calamity Trigger, her yelps of pain sounded like... other things.
  • She still retains at least one of those yelps in her English voice set in Continuum Shift. Probably because the English voice set is reused...
• Sexy Walk: Here it is.
• Simple Staff: Except that it can be controlled from afar, and can grow in size.
• Single-Target Sexuality: Her devotion to finding and helping Arakune return to human form implies this. This pretty is much what Hazama uses to convince her to Face Heel Turn, telling her he knows how to fix Arakune. In a subversion, she needs more than that in order to eventually give in, but even that's Forced Into Evil.
• Slipknot Ponytail: Lose due to time up, and her hairpin gets off, revealing her Rapunzel Hair. Also happens when she wins a match or after losing to Tager in his Story Mode.
• Stripperiffic: In a subversion, she's not proud of it and prefers a more decent clothing. However, due to her breast size, she had trouble of getting covering clothes of the right size.
• Theme Naming: Her specials are named after Mahjong hands.
• Token Good Teammate: She retains her morality despite being in Team Evil, and is uninterested in their Evil Plan, only caring about being able to help more people.
• Victoria's Secret Compartment: Where she sometimes keeps Lao Jiu and Ragna's wanted poster. Tsubaki takes notice that she keeps her meat buns in her cleavage.
• Your Days Are Numbered: She has an invisible clock on her head ticking to signify when she becomes the next Arakune. She, understandably, is horrified with this and want to prevent this.

Arakune was once a human scientist who worked with Tager and Litchi to study the Boundary, a strange realm inaccessible normally to humans. After a horrible accident, he slowly transformed into what is now Arakune: a strange, black, blob-like creature that thrives on information, similar to Wallachia from Melty Blood. To sustain himself, he has no choice but to become a cannibal and devour the members of Taokaka's tribe, among others. He now wants to find Ragna because of his Azure Grimoire, which he believes to be an immense source of life for him to devour. His Drive ability Crimson allows him to curse the opponent, letting him summon insects to attack them. His Astral Finish turns him into a ball with a giant eye in the center which can be controlled to crash into the opponent.

The Material Collection reveals that during his tenure in Sector Seven, he used to be close to Litchi, but after a bad argument, their relationship broke apart. His specialty is alchemy.

His story in Continuum Shift is pretty much the same. Still looking for the Azure Grimoire, with new and (not-so) improved BEES in tow.

  • One of his entry poses even has him sitting amidst a pile of books, which he promptly absorbs.

• Berserk Button: Has a very nasty reaction to the name "Kokonoe". Ask Tager.

• Bowel-Breaking Bricks: During Arakune's "Help Me, Professor Kokonoe" segment, Kokonoe mentions how he had been toned down since the first game. She comments that "the other players always ended up shitting bricks whenever you showed up."
• Can't Catch Up: It is heavily implied that the reason Arakune sought the power of the Boundary was because he felt constantly overshadowed by Kokonoe.
• Casanova: The Irresistable Arakune, which is only seen in "Help me! Professor Kokonoe!", whereas he dons a 'handsome man' face and starts flirting with Anything That Moves. Even comes complete with Bishie Sparkle.
• Confusion Fu: Considering that he's a sentient, drippy blob, it's hard to read what he's going to do next. A lot of his attacks come from unexpected angles. Oh, and he can instantly teleport across the stage.
• Department of Redundancy Department: If you turn on the option to display his text in full, you'll notice that a lot of his dialog is like this.
• Expressive Mask: Go watch the opening to Continuum Shift II and look closely when Arakune and Bang look up the roof Litchi is on. Arakune's mask blinks.
• Fan Boy: During the EX Story, safe to say that he 'idolizes' Relius for his achievements.
• Gameplay and Story Segregation: Arakune is incapable of talking in coherent sentences like a normal person... except when fighting, when he talks coherently.
• Go Mad from the Revelation: All that wisdom he got from the Boundary turned him insane, and his transformation into... that, which took away his ability to speak, only furthered his insanity. It's gotten to the point where he has no reliable memory of anything anymore.
• Green-Eyed Monster: He wants to be the supreme scientist. Unfortunately, Kokonoe is way too superior, which irritates him. Compounded that in the EX Story, Relius considers him an imbecile, but when Kokonoe makes a reference to Litchi's work, Relius instead mentions that he thought Kokonoe enjoys a company of full imbeciles but he's wrong. Which... didn't sit well for Lotte, considering that Litchi is much more junior than him as a researcher.
• I'm a Humanitarian: But he won't eat Bang because Bang "looks like an imbecile".
• It Is Pronounced "Tro-PAY": And different points in-game, his name is pronounced both ah-ra-KOON-ay and ah-RAK-nee.
• I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: His bad ending in Continuum Shift, where he erases Litchi's memories of him so that she would stop hunting after him and eventually end up like him. The end result is similar to Litchi's own bad ending, except that he still lives, taking one last look at her from hiding before disappearing into the night.
  • This could end up as a Deconstruction if you keep your fridges in tact. As Litchi stated, Arakune's knowledge is jumbled thanks to the Boundary corruption. Thanks to that, eating Litchi's memories instead dooms her to at best a slow death, at worst turning into the next Arakune, since memories about him are what drove her to get better. In short, he's instead making it worse.
• Jerkass: As a human being, Lotte was not a pleasant person. He is self-absorbed and only seemed to care about furthering his own glory and upstaging Kokonoe. He also considers Litchi's genuine helps to be utterly annoying, eventually leading to said bad argument and break up.
• Laughing Mad: Laughs more than Hazama, even.
• Mask Power: In a way. He created the mask he is wearing now so he could communicate with others... but it still doesn't work. In fact, it may have just made it worse.
  • "Of course if I don't have a face, I'll make one."
• Meaningful Name: Lotte "Roy" Carmine. Arakune sounds similar to "arachnid", the family that includes spiders. On that note, "Arachne", pronounced much the same way, is a character from Greek mythology who was turned into a spider. Granted, that Arachne's female, but still.
  • Further, "Rot" is German for "Red". "Carmine" is a shade of red. Considering his Drive ability is called "Crimson", his BGM is "Thin RED Line"... there's a trend here.
  • Also, "Rot" could refer to "decay", much as what has happened to his body, his memories, and his sanity. And it's only getting worse.
• Not So Different: Hakumen tells him as much when they meet in Arakune's Calamity Trigger Arcade mode path.
  • Also stated in even greater detail in Arakune's Story mode in Continuum Shift. Hakumen even notes that Arakune has reached such a point that he could almost be a Sankishin like Hakumen and Rachel if he tried to. Of course, this would involve stepping back and generally staying out of everyone's business like them too. And we all know THAT'S gonna happen...
• Oblivious to Love: In the Material Collection, in his diary, he wondered why Litchi was so nice to him. Now he can't even remember her most of the time, and is driven to confusion and frustration by this strange woman who won't leave him alone.
• One of Us: His gag reel in Continuum Shift involves him getting caught in what he believes to be a roleplaying game. Hilarity (and mentionings of several internet memes) ensues.
• Power Degeneration: Continuous tapping into the boundary, again, but it's inferred that he doesn't even have his former body.
• Scare Chord: His Leitmotif begins with one. This being a Daisuke Ishiwatari composition, it naturally leads into a badass metal riff.
• Theme Naming: Zero Vector; If P, then Q; Y, Two Dash; Equals 0; F of G; F Inverse, and N to Infinity. Someone had a major in Math.
• Took a Level in Jerkass: During the EX Story, he's much more civil to Kokonoe, even if he's annoyed at her belittling him occasionally. Of course, over time, things change and he's much more bitter.
• The Unintelligible: Other people have absolutely no clue what he's saying, but he feels that he's speakin coherent senencees.
  • Weirdly, Kokonoe somehow manages to have a lengthy conversation with him in Continuum Shift. Perhaps she has a translator.
  • Spike Spencer was literally only told four words of direction when he recorded the character. "Go Bat-Shit Crazy". Arakune's broken dialogue is NOT a result of technical editing. He really acted it out just as you hear him.
• Villain Teleportation: And the only one able to do it!
• Voice of the Legion: Not as distorted as most, just with an echoed filter.

• Well-Intentioned Extremist: Was this as Lotte Carmine. When thousands of people died in the Ikaruga War, he didn't revel in the massacre, but he did consider it an acceptable loss considering all the scientific data Sector Seven gained from it.

Bang Shishigami

A Ninja. Bang is more or less a Shounen action hero... and this makes him even more of an aberration in the world of BlazBlue. He has dedicated himself to the pursuit of love and justice after his lord was killed by Jin Kisaragi during the Ikaruga Civil War. He also wants Ragna's bounty, believing him to be a criminal and nothing more. But his first and foremost objective is to revive Ikaruga. Quite the Large Ham as well.

He has a crush on Litchi (though she doesn't reciprocate) and will go charging hammily headlong if he ever sees someone making her upset, much to Tager's misfortune or if he sees anyone that he misconstrues to be involved with her to the misfortune of Ragna. His Drive ability Burning Heart allows him to use special counter-attacks that open up four gates situated on the top of his super meter. If all four gates are opened, he can use a super that raises his Power Levels to OVER NINE THOUSAND, giving him increased speed and power, as well as allowing him to teleport in any direction. When performed in the console version and in Continuum Shift, it overrides the current BGM with a new song performed by none other than Hironobu Kageyama himself, called "Omae no Tettsui ni Kugi wo Ute!" (translates as "Beat a Nail With Your Hammer!"). His Astral Finish involves him stabbing the enemy with his Big Freaking Nail, then performing a gigantic Megaton Punch through several paper doors, and then ramming his opponent in the face with the aforementioned Big Freaking Nail.

In Continuum Shift, he survives the explosion from his encounter with an unknown assailant and allowing the light of the sky to shine upon the Kaka village, and is now searching for his master's son who, according to Valkenhayn, is still alive.

  • Badass Adorable: An unusual example. Whilst the 'badass' part is obvious, the 'adorable' mostly comes from the precise intersection of his meat-headed idiocy, his constant Butt Monkey status, and his genuinely kind, good-hearted nature.
• Badass Boast: His image song "Gale" is arguably this.
• Badass Creed: Gets one for a normal Distortion Drive:

"To rid this world of evil, I will become a hammer of justice!"

• Badass Normal: Really. Remember, every other character has: a) some kind of magical artifact (usually one of the Nox Nyctores), b) an inherent supernatural background that gives them powers, or c) exposure to some mystical force which has left them supernatural abilities. Technically, Bang has a Nox, but it's stated in-game that he doesn't even know it IS a Nox, let alone how to use it. That means that all of his abilities (including Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan) have been achieved through training and hard work. He can go toe-to-toe with some ludicrously powerful people, and even though he often gets tossed around anyway, the fact that he can even survive some of those battles is amazing in and of itself.
• Bare Your Midriff
• Big Brother Mentor: Thinks of himself as this towards Carl. He does have a pretty sweet Pet the Dog moment with him though.
  • Solidfied in Continuum Shift, Carl's good ending has him taking his leave to prepare himself against any move his father might pull, in one of his usual inner mologues Carl wishes that if he ever reaches adulthood, both Litchi and Bang are the figures he would take his mature character from.
• Big Frickin' Nail
• Boisterous Bruiser
• Bruiser With a Soft Centre: Especially around kids.
• Calling Your Attacks: Biggest offender. He calls out everything he does. And often, what he calls out isn't even the name of the attack. He'll also call out "Air tech!" or "This is an ukemi!" and even "I wasn't doing anything!".
• The Chew Toy:
  • One especially memorable example can be found during Litchi's joke ending in Continuum Shift, which has her beat the living daylights out of him with a metal bat in accordance with the rules of a living board game. Talk about being the epitome of Chew Toy.
  • Throughout Continuum Shift's Tutorial and Challenge modes, you will always be beating the crap out of Bang while you practice your combos.
• Clothing Damage: The end of his Astral Finish in Continuum Shift.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Bang is treated like an idiot by everyone. Word of God says even Carl is stronger than him. But despite that, he holds out on his own, has a Nox Nyctores that is inactive (which could make him more powerful than he is currently), and as long as the subject isn't about Litchi, he COULD be competent, and lastly... Hakumen praised his undying spirit. That speaks a lot for Bang's potential.
• Dogged Nice Guy: He holds a one-sided crush on Litchi.
• Dramatic Irony: He has a Boundary rending Nox Nyctores. While he hasn't mastered it, if only he knew Litchi's Boundary problems, he could've persuaded her and prevented her going over to NOL. As of now, he's mostly seen by the fandom as the one who will eventually save Litchi.
• Dramatic Wind: Bang's scarf blows heroically behind him in the breeze no matter which way he's facing or even if he's indoors.
• Dumb Is Good
• Failure Knight: He still couldn't hang over his guilt of letting Lord Tenjou die by the hands of Jin.
• A Father to His Men: Bang treats his subordinates with caring passion, he never belittles them, and seems to enjoy participating in any trivial tasks and manual labor alongside them as an equal. His subordinates reciprocate by praising Bang all the time, to the point it looks like this is their only purpose as minor characters in the game.
• The Fool: Dumb as a brick, and remarkably hard to kill.
• Friend to All Children: In the same vein as Litchi, Bang seems to be very fond of children. Notably, all orphans from Ikaruga deeply respect and adore him; the Kaka kittens also have come to like him as well. No wonder the Ikaruga orphans Litchi met before were Shipper on Deck for her and Bang.
• Gameplay and Story Segregation: He's the lowest tier character, in-story, because he hasn't really learned how to use his Nox Nyctores yet. For this reason, he could never beat Rachel Alucard in a fight, and the game will remind you of this anytime you use a "weak" character to beat a "strong" character in Story Mode. Usually by mocking you. For your victory. Yet, in Continuum Shift, he's top-tier.
• Good Scars, Evil Scars: He got his scar from being attacked by Jin
• Gratuitous Japanese: Even when using his English voice set in Continuum Shift, he'll occasionally say "nani?" It only helps make him look manly.
• Hazel Eyes: A straight example of this trope, as not only are his eyes hazel, but his Nox Nyctores gives him great potential.
• Heroic BSOD: Bang temporarily loses all meaning in life when Litchi puts him in the friend box after his dramatic love confession.

Further more, Relius also kept referring him as having something left behind by Shuuichirou Ayatsuki, in probability the Kushinada Device/Lynchpin. Once again, Bang has no idea what the heck is that.
• I Am Not Left-Handed: So far, the only instances where Bang used his Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan in story heavily implies that he is much stronger than other characters take him for, even with an unactivated Nox. Bang activated first against Tager in Calamity Trigger, with the Red Devil instantly being overthrown by him; the other time was against Hazama in Continuum Shift, Bang used it to flee with Tao and Carl in tow, Hazama immediately complimented Bang and stated that he is more than meets the eye.
• I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: His general attitude appears to Tsubaki to be playing the role of a period adventure hero. Her response is... interesting.
• Idiot Hair: Depends on who's doing the character art for the game, but he tends to have something of an ahoge in the in-game illustrations (like in his character art for Continuum Shift, shown above).
• Idiot Hero: Topped only by Taokaka in this regard.
• Idiots Cannot Catch Colds: During episode 7 of "Teach me, Miss Litchi", his subordinates suggest posing as a patient in order to get into the clinic. He says it's a great idea. ...He's just never been sick and doesn't know how to even get sick. This exchange is currently the trope's page quote.
• Invulnerable Attack: Enabled by his Drive moves.
• Jack of All Stats: While ninjas normally specialize in speed, Bang is more of an all-around character than anything.
• Japanese Pronouns: Is using archaic 'sessha' and 'de gozaru'.

• Kindhearted Cat Lover: He gets along very well with the Kaka clan, saving their village in one Calamity Trigger ending and serving as a doting adoptive parent to Tao in another.

• Limited Wardrobe: While Bang certainly is not the only one in the series subject to this, he is unique in that artbooks and side-materials, Bang is shown to be perfectly capable of wearing casual clothes, particularly when he is working at contruction sites in Ronin-Gai, Bang wears jeans and a white shirt.

• • In Tager's joke ending he activates his Furinkazan, complete with a golden aura, and kicks Tager's ass. Then things get weird...
• Team Dad: Thinks of himself as this to Carl and Taokaka, and pretty much any other youngster he feels the need to take under his wing, a notable example is what Bang wanted to do as soon as Platinum said she had no parents, taking her to Ronin-Gai's orphanage and raise her along with the other Ikaruga orphans. In his True Ending in Continuum Shift Bang also encourages two Ikaruga children to be strong and take care of Ronin-Gai, for him to have a place to return someday, as he leaves on a journey to Ikaruga.

Bang: A child matures by learning from a man. Yes, child. Take a good look. Learn from this man!

• Testosterone Poisoning: That's the exact basic concept of what Toshimichi Mori thought while creating him, still Bang's over-the-top character is not seen as comically exagerated within his fandom, which is pretty damn huge; instead, they will always push him into Rated "M" for Manly territory. Their devotion to Bang seems to have catched Mori's eyes as Bang has been achieving great importance to the storyline as the series goes on, including him being less over-the-top and more straight sided on the manliness aspect.
• Theme Music Power-Up: Originally only in the console version of the first game, but later became standard in the sequel.
• This Cannot Be!: He has this as one of his quotes whenever he's hit.
• Thou Shalt Not Kill: He hates Jin all right, but thanks to his Master's teachings, he always refuses to kill him, if he beats him, he only departs with the note for Jin: "Reflect on your sins!"
  • He makes an exception in his Continuum Shift true ending, but it's freaking Hazama, fresh from beating two children near to death for no real reason. Of course, since it's Hazama, he fails, but he escapes not only with his life but manages to tow Taokaka and Carl out with him.
• Took a Level in Badass: Outside the story, he's god tier in Continuum Shift. But the story also started treating him with more respect too. By the end of Continuum Shift, he's arguably less of a Butt Monkey than Ragna is, and he now seems legitimately capable of beating his opponents (if they're weakened), as opposed to the first game where some of them would simply feign defeat in order to make him go away. In his own story, Carl seems to think he's the superior fighter, Hakumen respects his warrior's spirit, and even Hazama, who spends the entire game trolling anyone and everyone who fights him, is all compliments when fighting Bang.
• Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: When Arakune beats him, Arakune declares that he "looks nasty" and leaves.
• Troperiffic
• A Twinkle in the Sky: Tager's joke ending, much to Tager's puzzlement.
• Unknown Rival: Jin has no idea who he is. Neither does Ragna.

• Weak but Skilled: Bang seems to have worked himself up to this level in Continuum Shift, as pointed out in the Took a Level in Badass trope.
• Wrong Genre Savvy: Every now and then, when he wins a match, he actually tells the player to "tune in next week!".
• X Marks the Hero
• Yank the Dog's Chain:
  • One of his ending paths finally gets Litchi to see him in a positive light rather than being a creepy stalker, and Bang even gets her to make The Promise to wait for him in Orient Town's bar. Unfortunately for Bang, what happens next is that he's dragged into the Boundary fighting Hakumen, presumably dies, and the one who remembered him is not Litchi (she probably forgot), but the Kaka clan. Thank God it's technically not canon as Continuum Shift shows.
  • It turns out this is the canon path (though he also learns about the presence of Tenjou's son). Bang's Continuum Shift story begins with him saving Litchi from an unknown assailant (not Hakumen), and then sort of came Back from the Dead (Tao was making up stories for that one). Which means... Bang pretty much gained Litchi's respect. However, this gets yanked again as unknown to Bang, Litchi ends up joining NOL out of desperation.

Carl Clover and Ada Clover/Nirvana

Don't let the cute little boy looks fool you, unless you can't help it. Carl is a vigilante seeking Ragna's bounty, which pretty much everyone in the world wants. He controls an autonomous puppet called Deus Machina: Nirvana. His Drive ability Automaton lets him control Nirvana.

He claims Nirvana is actually his sister Ada Clover. Obviously, no one believes him, especially the people who knew Nirvana from the Dark War when it was first created, but he's actually telling the horrible truth. Her current state stems from the fact that their father Relius was a gifted alchemist who used her in one of his experiments, surgically combining Ada and Nirvana together to make it into an improved "Organic" Nox Nyctores. Carl watched it happen; worse, when his father gave up and left half-way through, Carl had to finish the job himself to save what was left of her.

Because of all this, Carl is now pursuing his father to find out why he did what he did, but apparently Relius seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. He was formerly a student along with Noel and Jin at the academy, but he dropped out while Jin and Noel graduated. His glasses allow him to talk with machines, which explains why he can talk to Nirvana. His Astral Finish makes Nirvana produce a time bomb with a large radius, but the opponent has to be lured into it.

It has recently been confirmed by Mori that Carl is the strongest of the three vigilantes (the other two being Taokaka and Bang, of course).

• Adorkable: Like Noel, he is cute, modest, and shy. Also has Nerd Glasses.
• Adults Are Useless: Carl's general view on grown-ups is basically this, except replace "useless" with "evil". He learns from Litchi and Bang that this isn't entirely true.
• Alliterative Name
• Anti-Hero: Since Carl is one of the protagonists, he can be considered this. Averages to about Type IV.
• Ax Crazy: If what Hakumen says during Carl's arcade story is to be believed, then Nirvana is not affecting Carl's mind, and it is Carl's own bloodthirst that is moving Nirvana. Everyone else seems to think Nirvana is the reason for his craziness, but they're probably thinking of the original Nirvana.
  • Carl seems to have mellowed out some, if some of his CS arcade win quotes are any indication.
• Badass: Word of God states he's the strongest of the vigilantes (which include a clone of one of the biggest badasses in the game's backstory and BANG SHISHIGAMI). Of course, he doesn't realize it or think much of it. Then again, he's tag-teaming with a Nox Nyctores, which is a definite advantage.
• Badass Adorable:
  • Badass Normal: Nox Nyctores sister aside, he's just an ordinary human, a kid at that, yet is able to hold his own against all kinds of other beings.
• Badass Bookworm: His main hobbies, according to his profile, are reading, chess and playing the violin. On the side, he just happens to be a near-fearless vigilante.
• Badass Cape: Somehow, it can hold a knight-and-horse puppet that is just as big, if not bigger, than Carl himself.
• Berserk Button: Saying that Ada is Nox Nyctores or a puppet, not his sister or even calling her Nirvana is a quick way to anger out of him.
• Big Sister Worship
• Blue Eyes: Usually type 1, but can be type 2 in his worst moments.
• Bow Ties Are Cool: Of both the Badass and Adorkable varieties.

• Break the Cutie: His father turned his sister into Nirvana in front of him and then abandoned it half-done, forcing Carl to finish Nirvana up all by himself. This scarred poor Carl for life.

• Creepy Child: Once the player sees past the next few examples. Carl is disturbingly erratic and prone to acts of seemingly random murderous violence, usually when "sis" tells him to do something. Lampshaded thanks to his fourth DLC color being Detective Conan.
• Cry Into Chest
• Cultured Badass: As well as some of the hobbies mentioned above, he enjoys drinking tea, as proven in his Material Collection art.
• Difficult but Awesome: Carl probably has the steepest learning curve in the game, but once you learn how to properly use him, you can look forward to pummeling opponents in tandem with your sister for some nice big damage.
• Dissonant Serenity: Ever courteous, Carl always has a smile on his face, even when he's staring down a target. Or threatening to kill them.
• Dramatic Irony: Carl either realizes or did not realize that Litchi is in NOL, siding with Relius despite chastising his parenting skills (if the former, then it's the reason he snapped at her in the first place). However, thanks to Character Development, he has a better chance to finally not take things in face value and probably find that she's actually Forced Into Evil and perhaps try to help in the future.
• Fragile Speedster: With defense and the ability to chain being put into working with Ada to trap opponents, Carl almost needs Ada for more than story. With that,
• Freudian Excuse: A very good one at that.
• Goggles Do Something Unusual: His glasses let him talk to machines.
• Heroic BSOD: After Carl learns that his mom was turned into a robot much like his sister, he has a "blank, empty expression on his face, befitting someone who has lost everything."

• Sociopathic Hero: He certainly shows shades of this throughout both his Arcade and Story modes, especially when dealing with Relius (duh), Noel (for her connection to the Azure) and Tsubaki (For her connection to the NOL, and subsequently his father). It should be noted that the last two were once his closest friends.
• Soul Jar: Nirvana holds the soul of Carl's sister Ada.
• Stage Magician: He very much looks the part. So much so, in fact, that BB fans have developed an Advice Dog meme around it.

Carl's older sister. As a human, she was very kind and nuturing towards her little brother, causing Carl to idolize her. She baked him cookies, offered him games to play, had an amazing sense of humor, and was overall a genuinely kind person, according to Carl.

However, two years before the events of Calamity Trigger, her body parts, and most likely her soul, were incorporated into the Nox Nyctores Nirvana by their father Relius.

Currently, she serves as Carl's weapon, partner and drive ability, acting on his commands and protecting him. Despite her being a mechanical puppet, she has an unusual amount of sentience, acting on her own to protect Carl or attacking a dangerous enemy, such as Hazama. She also can speak to Carl despite her dialogue consisting of nothing more than ellipsis. This causes others to doubt Carl's sanity, even though it has been stated that his glasses allow him to talk to machines, including her.

• Actually Pretty Funny: Carl says that she has an amazing sense of humor in his Gag Reel, but it's such a shame we'll never hear the answer to "How many dead hamsters does it take to screw in a lightbulb?". Also in Noel's Gag Reel, when Noel, Bang and Carl hear about how the chef slipped on the Peking Duck and got messed up in the process, Nirvana/Ada supposedly said something 'pwn-worthy' at the chef's expense.

Carl: Now that's just going too far! It's bad enough you're making jokes at the poor man's expense, but must you do so with that arrogant smirk on your face as well? Bang: Master Carl... What... Did your sister say? Carl: Eh? Oh yes. She just asked, "What does a chef who slips on a duck and Kagutsuchi's seithr have in common?"

"I am the White Void. I am the Cold Steel. I am the Just Sword. With blade in hand shall I reap the sins of this world, and cleanse it in the fires of destruction! I am Hakumen! The end has come!"

The sub-boss of the first game. Hakumen is the former leader of the Six Heroes who defeated the Black Beast. He was trapped inside the Gate for decades until he was finally released around the same time Ragna's first attacks on the NOL happened. Unlike the other characters, he does not have a regular Heat gauge, instead using an unique meter that gradually stores up to 8 orbs, used for special moves, combos and Distortion Drives. The meter fills up automatically over time in addition to being filled by attacking and defending. His Drive ability Zanshin (God Slash) is a multi-purpose countering maneuver.

After Jin's Story occurs, he is sent back 100 years into the past: the exact time when the Black Beast appears. In his dying state, he is saved by Rachel, who installs him into the Susano'o Unit. He is also given the Nox Nyctores Interfectum Malus: Ookami, which can completely nullify the effects of magic. He fulfills his destiny and becomes a true hero, but being the Jerkass he is, he chastises humanity for creating the beast in the first place. Humanity, not wanting to hear about how their own failings might one day kill them all, lock him inside of the Edge, which is another area of the Boundary. 90 years later, he is freed by Kokonoe. His Astral Finish involves him performing a counter. If the opponent falls for it, the background suddenly switches to the style of an ancient Japanese scroll painting and he unleashes a fatal strike upon his opponent which fills the screen with blood.

By the time Continuum Shift rolls around, he is taken by Kokonoe and imprisoned. Rachel frees him, however, and he agrees to serve her to find Terumi.

The Wheel of Fate drama CD elaborates on his story when he was still human.

• Animal Motifs: Much like Jin before him, a "Fox". But even more Badass because it's the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox in Japanese Mythologies. Which strongly reflects his status as the Alternate Timeline of his past self.
  • When activating his Mugen/Infinity Distortion Drive, Hakumen's long silver hair stands up and seperates into nine pointy lineups, depicting the nine tails of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. Heck! Even Hakumen's official Crest artwork has nine pointy leaf-like swords attached to the runic circle in the center.

    • In Continuum Shift, it's implied he can now use around 30-40% of his power now.
• Calling Your Attacks: While Hakumen doesn't shout them out loud like other characters, he does have a deep-growling version of this trope.
• The Comically Serious: So Comically Serious he's not given a Gag Reel. Not like he needed one anyway.
• Counter Attack: His standard Drive, Yukikaze and Akumetsu, work on this principle.
• Damn You, Muscle Memory!:
  • Akumetsu is 720+D in Calamity Trigger, charge down -> up+ D in Continuum Shift. If you like using it...
  • Also, Gurren is 236A in Calamity Trigger and is 214A in Continuum Shift.
  • j.C is no longer that nice jump-in friendly move it used to be either.
  • Renka (214B) and Zantetsu (41236C) have had their input reversed. Renka is now 236B and Zantetsu is 63214C. While a good change overall, damn if it doesn't get you killed when you're used to doing the old input.
• Death or Glory Attack: His counters have quite a small active window, so pain usually ensues if you mistime. It does not help that some of his Distortion Drives and Astral Heats have unusual timing so you cannot just wildly use the super flash buffer technique.
• Determinator: Spent ninety years of utter isolation in the Boundary—the same one that drove Arakune mad—and retained his sanity through sheer force of will.
• Difficult but Awesome: He becomes this in Continuum Shift.
• Emergency Transformation: Jin likely would have died if Rachel didn't make him into Hakumen. Whether his body or just his soul is in there is unclear.
• Enigmatic Minion
• Evil Laugh: Japanese dialogue only, and tends to indulge in this a lot during moments of sarcasm. Obviously taken from Lelouch.
• Eyes Do Not Belong There: He doesn't have any eyes on his mask. His armor instead sports them everywhere else, like his shoulders, chest and shins.
• The Faceless: Hakumen's never seen without his mask. And the one time he does remove it, his back is turned. Of course, it's entirely possible there's no human body in there at all, just Jin's disembodied soul.
  • Eyeless Face: If what the narrator said was true in his storyline.
• Face Palm: He does this when he loses due to Time Up.
• Failure Knight: What failure? See the Wheel of Fortune drama CD.
• Fantastic Racism/Fantastic Slur: Jubei makes it clear that "Grimalkin" is not a polite term.
  • The Japanese version is a little more obvious about this, as it has him referring to Jubei and Kokonoe as "Bakeneko" or "monster/goblin cats".
  • "Grimalkin" itself is actually just an archaic word that means "old cat". It's usually applied to female cats though, which might be why Jubei takes offense to it but Kokonoe doesn't seem to care. Hakumen's just being sesquipedalian.
  • It should also be noted that Hakumen's use of the term for Jubei would appear to be mostly good-natured ribbing on his part (the two are old war buddies, after all), whereas (given his tone of voice) he has nothing but pure disdain and loathing for Kokonoe.
• Flower Motifs: His attack names.
• Gory Discretion Shot: His Astral Heat.
• Green Aesop: Most of his motifs tend to revolve around nature, as well as Shinto religion. All of his attacks are named after flowers and seasons, his crest has a canine in the center, he tries to discourage Kokonoe from relying on technology so much, and he strongly dislikes nukes, even moreso than the Black Beast.
• Guide Dang It: Judgement Squall is unblockable if you delay it for the maximum period of time. The in-game description doesn't even remotely hint at.

• Hero Antagonist: Not just to Ragna either. In some of the paths for the other characters, such as Tao, he attacks them seemingly just because he can.

• Heroic Willpower: To an absurd extent. Years inside the Edge failed to break his will, and it makes him Immune to Fate. In Calamity Trigger, he uses it to counter an attempt to teleport him by affirming his own existence.
• Implausible Fencing Powers: A properly-timed slash can defeat most projectiles.
• Instant Death Radius: He can attack largely with impunity in the distance between his opponent's maximum melee reach and the end of his own BFS.
• Invulnerable Attack: Made low-tier, at least in Calamity Trigger, by the conspicuous absence thereof.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold
• Katanas Are Just Better: His Nox Nyctores, Interfectum Malus: Ookami. Technically, it's a Nodachi, not a Katana.
• Large Ham
• Meaningful Name: Hakumen means "white mask" or "white face". It may also be a reference to the Hakumen Konmō Kyūbi no Kitsune, which fits with his kitsune emblem and with his mask, which resembles a fox's face and ears. Further, when his long hair hair flares up in response to his power, it divides itself into nine tails.
• Mighty Glacier: Not as slow as Tager, though. Continuum Shift speed buffs are shifting him towards Lightning Bruiser.
• My God, What Have I Done?/My Greatest Failure: Hakumen has two instances of this, due to his former life as Jin Kisaragi.
  • In the drama CD The Wheel of Fortune, after Jin got injured badly by Ragna, Tsubaki comes to his aid and literally pleads for him to stop fighting. Unfortunately, Jin's obsession for killing Ragna and stubbornness got the better of him, with Jin telling Tsubaki to "Get lost" and that "He doesn't need her", causing Tsubaki to lament those words in pure depression. This in turn, drove Tsubaki to pull an Heroic Sacrifice, shielding Jin from Nu's stabs. For Hakumen, the death of Tsubaki in The Wheel of Fortune holds a lot... which explains his actions in one of Tsubaki endings in Continuum Shift and the hatred he holds for both Jin Kisaragi (seeing himself as responsible for her death) and Nu-13/Lambda-11.
  • It's the (many) death(s) of Ragna... See This Is Unforgivable! below for the other.
• My Name Is Inigo Montoya: He does this a lot. Most notably, it shows up in both his Badass Creed (seen above) and in one of his win quotes:

"I. Am. Hakumen! Do not forget that!"

• Named Weapons: His Nox Nyctores: Ookami. Which literally means "Howling God".
• Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: And thanks to having been nearly killed by v-13 and then converted into whatever kind of cyborg robot thing he is, you can actually make a coherent argument for the "zombie" part!
• One-Handed Zweihander: Surprisingly averted with Hakumen.
• The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Inverted: he has the chance to kill Arakune, but decides against it because Litchi is the only one who should.
  • Played straight with Ragna, seeing as how Hakumen's Jin and all.
• Our Ghosts Are Different
• Pet the Dog: The only character he treats as an equal in the first game is ironically the resident Butt Monkey Bang.
  • Shows vulnerability and kindness to Tsubaki, and apparently named one of his attacks after her.
• Power Glows: Mugen/Infinity gives him a white glow.
• Power Limiter: Stated to be only at 20% of his full power due to the rest of it being left in the boundary, but is still one of the most powerful characters in the game, powerful enough to trash most characters. Which makes you wonder how powerful he really is once he reached his full potential. And we are not even counting his "Power of Order", yet. Damn.
• Power Nullifier: Ookami's power is apparently this, represented in-game by its ability to destroy projectiles and in-story by the fact that otherwise-immortal characters such as Nu, Arakune and Hazama are legitimately afraid of it.
• Razor Wind: Kokuujin: Shipuu/Judgment: Squall.
• Sealed Good in a Can: Imprisoned in the Edge of the Boundary until rescued by Kokonoe.
• Shoulders of Doom: Another trait he shares with Justice. Interestingly, they look almost identical to Mu-12's.
• Single-Stroke Battle: Yukikaze looks like this, even if it isn't a One-Hit Kill. If you use Yukikaze when your opponent do a Barrier Burst, it is in most cases a Single-Stroke Battle.
• Smug Super: He reeks of this.
• Soul Jar: Hakumen's armor contains Jin's soul, not his body.
• Stealth Pun: Japanese-only. His Badass Creed has the "Just Sword" as jin for sword in Kanji. So that part can also be rendered "I am Jin".
• Stone Wall: His Counter Attacks allow him to be played this way.
• Straight Man: To the point where he's the only character in Continuum Shift without a gag reel.

Kokonoe: "Man, he really needs to pull that stick out of his ass. Guys like him are a real pain for these gag routines."

• Super Mode: Ougi Kokuujin: Mugen!/Final Judgement: Infinity!
• Sword Beam: Just like Jin, he also has one for a Distortion Drive, Kokuujin: Shippu.
• That Man Is Dead: In Continuum Shift, he has completely renounced the name "Jin Kisaragi", stating that it no longer has any meaning to him.
• This Cannot Be!: He reacts with this trope when Jubei informs him that Terumi has returned, much to his own shock and disbelief.

Jubei: I reckon it's Kokonoe who's trying to pull you out here... An' if she does, I'd be much obliged if you don't tell about me. I got my reasons. Hakumen: ...Then you have my word. But what has brought you here? What news do you bring of the outside world? Jubei: ...Terumi's back. Hakumen: What!? That can't be! It's impossible!

• This Is Unforgivable!: In The Wheel of Fortune, which tells the story of the timeline he's from, he (as Jin) screams this at Nu-13 after she fatally injures Tsubaki using Legacy Edge after the latter had just let herself be stabbed in an attempt to protect him. The resulting hatred for Nu-13 still exists even now, as evident by his reaction to Lambda-11 in her Arcade Mode.
  • He also possesses similar feelings towards himself, particularly notable in his reactions with Jin, who is his past self. He believes that he brought nothing but pain and misery to those around him, and he especially can't forgive himself for killing his brother Ragna. At the same time, he knows that the Black Beast's revival presents a very real threat to all life in the world, and believes the best way to eliminate that threat is through Ragna's death. It's obvious from one of his endings in Calamity Trigger that the act of killing Ragna still fills him with immense grief, no matter how many times he's done it.
• Took a Level in Badass: Went up the tier list in Continuum Shift... a lot.
• Tsundere: As much as he denies it, some things never change.
• "Wake-Up Call" Boss: His Unlimited self in Calamity Trigger. If you are an inexperienced player, he will destroy you.
• Warrior Therapist: Towards Jin, although he intersperses it with flat-out insults.
• What the Hell, Hero?: First to Rachel regarding her inaction, and then when he learns that Kokonoe has something like a hundred nuclear warheads restored to working order, he... doesn't take it well, since he thinks they're the only thing worse than the Black Beast.
• White Mask of Doom: This should be pretty obvious.
• Worthy Opponent: He seems to regard Ragna and, of all people, Terumi as this: if he defeats either of them, he gets mad at them for holding back.

The Final Boss of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Nu is a battle cyborg sealed within the Sheol Gate. She's programmed to eliminate all who come near the Gate if they are unrecognizable. Her Drive ability Sword Summoner lets her manipulate magical swords.

She is actually sentient and recognizes Ragna and switches her personality from Emotionless Girl to Yandere when conversing with him. She reveals that she's in love with Ragna and wants him to join her in destroying the world. When he refuses and breaks her heart, she suddenly becomes a mega-bitch and decides to take him by force. She also possesses a fake Azure Grimoire, and she wants to join with Ragna to complete it, not realizing it's a fake and it'll cause them to go back in time and become the Black Beast (alternatively, she does know, and its how she intends to destroy the world). Her giant sword/armor device, Lux Sanctus: Murakumo, is also a Nox Nyctores. Her true purpose is actually to observe the Boundary and guard it from all who try to enter it, but since she was dormant Arakune somehow managed to get in. Her Astral Finish has her holding the opponent in place as she conjures a large magical sword that fatally impales them in midair, as an animated cutscene.

• Double Entendre: When Speaking to Ragna, her dialogue is filled to the brim with these.
• The Dreaded: Definitely the most feared thing this side of the Black Beast. Which makes sense. Even the characters who don't know her or see her Yandere side know that she's bad news when she appears. Well, except Taokaka and Rachel. Even Hakumen is wary of the danger she poses, due to his past.
• Eyepatch of Power: Wears an eyepatch that is stated to be the other half of Ragna's Azure Grimoire.
• Glass Cannon: Damage potential is amazing. Health, not that much.
• Heroic Sacrifice: In Continuum Shift, as Nu/Lambda, she gives up her life to protect Ranga from Terumi's attack, and uses her death to upgrade his fake Azure Grimoire with the Idea Engine Kokonoe installed in Lambda's body. This gives Ragna the power-up he needs to defeat Terumi and Mu.
• Humans Are the Real Monsters
• I Cannot Go On Without You: Nu mentions that her and Ragna's life are one and the same, referring to the life-link between the two, which prevents either from dying unless both die at the same time. However, in Calamity Trigger's True Ending, Ragna was saved by Noel, and Nu was left to die in the cauldron. This is apparently some sort of loophole... or maybe not, considering that Kokonoe was able to grab her soul from the Boundary and transfer it to Lambda's restored corpse. Even after Nu/Lambda was killed, Nu started regenerating her old body back at NOL headquarters.
• Idiot Hair
• Ill Girl: Seems to be this. Very pale skin, dark circles around the eyes, and she coughs when she greets Ragna in Calamity Trigger. Probably justified as her body seems very new, and considering what most Murakumo Units go through in the test phase... and there is always the possibility she is Playing Sick for more sympathy from Ragna.
• Implacable Man
• Invocation: "From beyond the realm of souls and birth, I call upon the ur-sword to bring ruin upon my enemies. Perish."
  • And "O' silver blade forged in the depths of the beyond, heed my summons and purge those who stand in my way. Lay waste."
• Joke Character: Most of Nu's screen time in Continum Shift's story mode is in the gag reels, complete with total loss of any homicidal intent... which is replaced with Valley Girl dialogue.
  • And occasionally, pirate lingo.

Ragna: "Nu, for the love of god: The valley or the sea... just pick one."

• Killed Off for Real: Or not. Remember that her soul can apparently be salvaged and put into a new Murakumo Unit (as seen with Lambda). If it could happen once, it can probably happen again. Unless she sacrificed her soul for Ragna in Continuum Shift's ending. It wasn't really explained that much. If this is the case, then this trope applies.
• Laughing Mad: In the True Ending, she finally snaps and starts mocking Ragna's attempts to alter the timeline, saying that he "can't change anything". Granted, it's a very chilidish-sounding laugh, but it sounds like something out of Higurashi.
• Machine Monotone
• Monochromatic Eyes: In the true ending, when she stabs Ragna, the eyepatch comes off showing us that her eye underneath that is just a single color red with various hues. All of the eye, pupil, iris and sclera.
• Motor Mouth: When does Kanako Kondou breathe?
• Murder the Hypotenuse: In The Wheel of Fortune, when she thinks Ragna is cheating on her with Tsubaki because both are present at the Cauldron when she wakes up, she tries to kill her. She completely loses it when Ragna protects Tsubaki from her, badly injuring him in the resulting fight, then later stabs Tsubaki while she protects Jin... and following it by using Legacy Edge against her, saying that she "hates that girl".
• Nietzsche Wannabe: Her taunts include many allusions to the pointlessness or emptiness of all existence, leading up to "Everything... disappear".
• Not Quite Dead: Yep, she's back in Continuum Shift as Lambda's Unlimited form. Great.
• Pick Your Human Half: Of the "looks human, acts robotic" type. Brutally subverted when around Ragna.
• Pre-Ass-Kicking One-Liner/Catch Phrase:

"Activate termination protocol."

• The Red Baron: At least to Hakumen, who tends to make up names for people he doesn't like or are a legitimate threat in his eyes. He usually refers to Nu as things such as an "Abomination", "A Sword Meant To Slay God", etc. But it's also personal with him.^[context?]
  • And although nobody really refers to her with it aside from the title and her story "The Calamity Trigger".
• Red Eyes, Take Warning

• Robot Girl
• Storm of Blades: Her fighting style.

• Synchronization: Nu had a life-link with Ragna in Calamity Trigger, which is why she wouldn't die.

• Yandere: In her profile data: Hobbies? Thinking about Ragna. Values? Ragna. Likes? Ragna. Dislikes? Everything else. Houston, we have a problem.
• You Are Number 13
• Younger Than They Look: The Blazblue Material Collection seems to suggest that her body was created before Ibukido's destruction, but it isn't until her awakening at Kagutsuchi's Gates of Shoel that she is actually completed. This technically makes her less than a day old.
