Penelope: Boy, am I sleepy.

Hooded Claw: Good, it's time you hit the sack (Evil Laugh) literally!

A tactic mostly seen in Western Animation: The villain usually sneaks up behind the target and throws a large burlap sack over her head and carries her off to his hideout; this usually happens to a Distressed Damsel or Snooping Little Kid. The target is almost always female, but it can happen to male characters, just not as often.

Examples of Bag of Kidnapping include:

Anime and Manga

  • Lupin III:
    • This has happened to Fujiko Mine on a few occasions. Lupin once did it to her to prevent her from escaping with a rare diamond in a blizzard.
    • It also happened to Lupin and Zenigata when they are abducted by a training camp in Morocco.
  • Fuu is captured this way in one of the last episodes of Samurai Champloo for a prostitute smuggling ring.
  • In Bleach, Grimmjow transports Orihime this way so he can use her to heal Ichigo. Rurichiyo Kasumiōji is also captured this way.
  • In the Pokémon episode "A Friend in Deed", Jessie and James capture Pikachu this way.
    • They also do this to a Sandshrew in "The Path to the Pokémon League".
  • Government agents try to do this Robin in One Piece. Little do they know, that they actually caught her fake.
  • Discipline: Record of a Crusade
    • Leona Morimoto is abducted this way by a bunch of masked men with the intention of raping her, claiming to be sent by God to punish her for her controlling ways.

Comic Books

  • In Flash Comics #87 both Johnny Thunder and the original Black Canary (Diana Lance) are captured this way by gangsters, Johnny is thrown off a cliff while Black Canary is thrown into a dungeon.
  • In the G.I. Joe issue #21 "Silent Interlude" Storm Shadow kidnaps Scarlett this way.

Fan Fic

Film

  • In Borat, the title character attempts to marry Pamela Anderson by shoving her in a bag and trying to run off with her, an example of "marriage by capture". He doesn't get far, but hey, he tried.
  • In Casino Royale 1967, Vesper (Ursula Andress) steps out of the casino and two waiting thugs throw a bag over her and carry her off. Evelyn (Peter Sellers) steps out a moment later looking for her.

Evelyn [to doorman]: You haven't by chance seen a young lady in a green dress, have you?

Doorman: Now let me see, sir...would that be a lady with a black bag over her head being manhandled by two unsavory gentlemen?

  • In Barbie: The Princess and the Pauper, it is not fully shown but still implied when the villain's cronies, Nick and Nack, lure out and sneak up on Princess Anneliese with a large open sack. It is shown in full when they capture her tutor and love interest, Julien, when he confronts their boss while investigating her kidnapping.
  • In Barbie: The Pearl Princess, the villain's eel henchman Murray traps Princess Lumina in a sack after she is led onto an isolated turret, and his cronies also trap her seahorse friend Kuda before carrying them away to the castle's dungeons to be locked away.
  • In The Great Mouse Detective, Fidget the bat uses this tactic to abduct Olivia.
  • In Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Kate is abducted this way while the team is in Paris. She is set free when her abductor reaches the top of the Eiffel Tower and steals her phone.
  • In Tangled, the Stabbington brothers try to use a sack to kidnap Rapunzel and make a fortune off of her. Their attempt is thwarted, however, when Mother Gothel knocks them out with a branch in a staged rescue.
  • Tactic is used in Strange Magic when Dawn is abducted by the Bog King and his goblins.
  • In Return to Never Land, Captain Hook binds and gags Jane and then stuffs her into a sack. She breaks free on her own, but is then pushed back in. She is later released after being rescued by Peter Pan.
  • In The Giant of Thunder Mountain, the villains bind and gag Ben before doing this. They then proceed to sneak out the window just before a posse shows up.
  • This method of kidnapping was used by Gonzorgo and Roderigo in Babes in Toyland when Tom Piper was kidnapped by them.

Live Action Television

  • Castle: During a CIA related episode, the CIA keeps doing this to the good guys. Apparently, the location of their underground headquarters are classified. God only knows why the CIA isn't going through normal, legal channels instead of randomly kidnapping cops of the street at gunpoint. Seriously.
  • Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: not quite, but pretty close when Jemma Simmons is sent to study an Inhuman trapped in hibernation for seven months and then again when she is forced to leave.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Happens to Dawn when she is abducted by the Puppet Minions in the Musical Episode. We don't see her actually in the sack though, as she wakes up on a pool table completely sackless.
  • Penguin and his henchmen kidnap Batman, Robin and Alfred in this fashion during an episode of the 1960's Batman, "Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin". Penguin thought he also captured Barbara Gordon this way, but his henchmen mistakenly captured a dummy.
  • The 41st episode of Swans Crossing when the baldies kidnap Gloria Booth.

Video Games

  • In Dwarf Fortress the Goblins send baby snatchers who come with a bag. So you can e.g. catch one with a cage trap on the way out, and the abducted child can be saved if dumped out of the bag soon enough.

Web Comics

  • In Girl Genius, Tarvek gets kidnapped in this fashion, which among other things delays the lead kidnapper's discovery that his minion has kidnapped the wrong person.
  • In Rescuing Dara, Dara is kidnapped in this manner.
  • Clover Firelight of Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic gets kidnapped like this at least once. And once by the local assassin guild... sort of.
