The Characters of one of Adult Swim's first Animated Series, but which one is really number one in the hood, G?
The Aqua Teens
Master Shake
A giant, talking milkshake. Yes, you read that right. Likes to think he's the boss, but is just a stupid jerk.
- Asshole Victim: He usually gets his just desserts. Subverted in some of the later episodes, where he does nothing wrong, especially in “Bookie”.
- Affably Evil/Faux Affably Evil: Depending on the Writer, sometimes in the same episode.
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: Well, he's just a talking cup.
- Bond One-Liner: To Happy Time Harry, after he has enough of him: “Oh yeah? Let’s see what you know about flying! (Tosses Happy Time Harry of a cliff)
- The Blind Leading the Blind: Shake will frequently attempt to impart knowledge to Meatwad, in spite of being equally (and sometimes even more) dumb.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Prone to coming up with crazy ideas out of the blue.
- Dirty Coward: Not one to be relied upon in times of crisis. Subverted in the Series Fauxnale, where he performs a Heroic Sacrifice to save Meatwad.
- Face Heel Turn: Downplayed, but in the early episodes he was more of a harmless Cloudcuckoolander Jerkass, and his status as a detective was somewhat noble, wanting to fight crime. After the detective element was phased out, he lost the harmless part.
- Freudian Excuse: Shake doesn't have a real brain. Inside of his head is a huge cluster of nerves, which explains his inability to think ahead. And in “Reedickyoulos” he mentions he is messed up because he was not raised properly.
- Flanderization: He becomes even more of a Jerkass with each season.
- Implausible Deniability: Shake is the kind of guy who'll suddenly reject an idea he previously clung to with his life.
- In Name Only: Frylock's the real leader--Shake calls himself "Master" because it sounds cool.
- Insane Troll Logic: Uses this a lot.
- For example, he once decided Frylock was a witch because a computer went back in time.
Frylock: Hmm. The RAM overheated and (Techno Babble must have sent the computer back in time. |
- It's All About Me: “Why must I never get credit for the attention grabbing things that I do?”
- In “Vampirus” he, upon discovering he is immune to vampirism, uses it to get free meals and have sex with women rather than help anyone.
- Jerkass: Unrepentantly lazy, rude, selfish, and greedy.
- Not-So-Harmless Villain: Episodes like “Lasagna” and “The Granite Family” show that while he’s a dumb, lazy, psychopath, he can be very dangerous when he thinks things through. In the former he kills Carl via mind games and in the latter he destroys the world.
- Know-Nothing Know-It-All
- Large Ham: Shake gets overly dramatic when he starts accusing people (usually Frylock) of outlandish things.
- Man Child: If Shake doesn't get his way, he will break things. Even his own property.
- The McCoy: Impulsive beyond all reason.
- Pet the Dog: The one time Shake did something nice for someone was when he found out Frylock was dying of cancer.
- Small Name, Big Ego- Shake's entire existence revolves around getting people to think he's the best thing since sliced bread. Never works, 'cause he's a moron. This gets used against him in “Super Model”, where Meatwad convinces him to have surgeries by preying on his vanity to get Shake out of the house. It culminated in Shake getting multiple scars and a giant nose grafted to his ass.
- Staying Alive
- Stuff Blowing Up: At first, he seemed to have the power to make things explode whenever he tossed them out of frustration or anger.
- Suicide Is Painless: Once killed himself just to fuck with Meatwad.
- Karma Houdini: In “Reedickyoulos”, the episode where he crossed the Moral Event Horizon, he gets turned into a zombie after having sex with Meatwad’s zombified pets (all of which he had killed).
- They Killed Kenny - Then again, most of his deaths are his own fault.
- Too Dumb to Live: Definitely. He once managed to cut himself in half.
- Took a Level In Jerkass: In the first season, he had some vaguely noble intentions in being a detective, but after that element was phased out he became an out and out Jerkass.
- Ungrateful Bastard: In “Allen”, upon realizing Meatwad cares about him, he tries to kill him. Also, he treats Frylock like crap even though Frylock provides for them.
- What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Frylock can fire laser beams from his eye and can shoot fry-like projectiles, Meatwad can shapeshift into virtually anything and Shake... can excrete a white substance from his straw.'
- Since he's a pistachio-flavored milkshake, the white substance is most likely...milkshake.
Frylock
A floating, super-intelligent box of french fries with various powers.
- A Man Is Not a Virgin: Subverted, in that he's probably a virgin.
- Badass Beard
- Badass Bookworm: Frylock's eye lasers and smarts are the only things keeping Shake and Meatwad alive. Well, you know what I mean.
- Beware the Nice Ones: He’s normally pretty chill, but he can get even more psychotic than Shake.
- Bifauxnen
- Character Development: In the Pilot, he was robotic and subservient to Shake. This quickly changed.
- Control Freak: When he tries to have a party, he becomes this out of desperation.
- Deadpan Snarker
- Eye Beams: Frylock wears contact lenses that shoot just about anything from electricity to fire-retardant foam.
- For Science!
- Flanderization: He started out as a Servile Snarker to Shake, but became the full blown Only Sane Man.
- Mid-Air Bobbing
- Naughty Tentacles: He also has Barbie Doll Anatomy, but unlike Shake, the Series never hangs a lantern on this.
- Nice Guy: Compared to other characters, but even he has moments:
*Frylock kills MC Pee Pants, then rationalizes it* |
- "No Respect" Guy: Nobody ever listens to Frylock's advice. They usually suffer for it.
- Not So Above It All: Every now and then, Frylock acts as greedy and mean as Shake--one ep shows him cloning (i.e., counterfeiting) money, even after he told Shake not to.
- Only Sane Man - He's basically the only ATHF member who's capable of...anything, really. Meatwad and Shake are too stupid to take care of themselves without Frylock around.
- Power Floats
- The Spock - He's a bit of a wet blanket. But when your roommates are as dumb as Meatwad and Shake, it's forgivable.
- The Straight Man
- Token Religious Teammate: At first, given he has faith in the Bible and tries to join a church to teach Meatwad some value. By “Bible Fruit Moonsong”, he gives it up.
Meatwad
A wad of meat. Pretty slow-witted, but he has a good heart.
- Back From the Dead
- Bumbling Sidekick: He's Frylock's lab assistant. He may not be bright, but he's more stable than Shake.
- Cloudcuckoolander
- The Ditz: Let's put it like this. Shake, who accidentally kills himself on a regular basis, outsmarts and manipulates Meatwad just as often.
- Drunk with Power: Twice. Mostly, however, he doesn’t do that much with it except be a bit of a dick.
- Dumb Is Good: For him, at least, making it more like Dumbest Is Good.
- The Kirk: He tries to be the mediator between Shake and Frylock, but he's just too laid back to make much of an impact.
- Living Toys: They're not really toys, but he can still talk to them. The others can talk to them in "Shake Like Me". In "Dumber Dolls", Frylock buys him an actual living toy, which turns out to be The Eeyore, who proceeds to make Meatwad cynical.
- Man Child: He and Frylock basically have a father-son relationship, since Meatwad can't think for himself.
- Manipulative Bastard: To Shake. Pretty much the only intelligent things he does is subtle, psychological revenge on Shake.
- Nice Guy: Most of the time.
- Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Just look at his "dolls". He even says that he can relate to a Darker and Edgier Sesame Street telling him, "You're gonna die."
- Nixon Mask: In "The Shaving".
- Rant-Inducing Slight: In "Gee Whiz".
- Shock and Awe: In Episode 5, after Shake puts him in the dryer for a week.
- Took a Level In Badass: In Last Dance of Napkid Lad.
- Voluntary Shapeshifter: He usually only limits himself to turning into a hotdog or an igloo, for some reason.
Other Characters
Carl Brutanunanulewski
Their fat, bald, middle-aged neighbor.
- Butt Monkey
- Casanova Wannabe
- The Chew Toy: His most noticeable trait is that he gets shafted all the time, just for living next door to the Aqua Teens.
- Deadpan Snarker
- Image Song: "I Don't Need No Instructions To Know How To Rock!"
- Noodle Incident
- Only Sane Man: Carl's an ignorant, sex-crazed, lazy bum, and on any other show he'd be the wacky neighbor. But since he lives next to the Aqua Teens, he's the sane one by default.
- They Killed Kenny: Carl dies ridiculously often, usually because of something the Aqua Teens did.
The Mooninites (Ignignokt and Err)
Aliens from the moon that look like they'd be better off in an Atari game.
- Anti-Villains: They're more of a nuisance to the Aqua Teen's than an actual threat... for the most part.
- Asshole Victim: Err gets crushed by Gorgatron after making fun of him in “Moon Master”.
- Big Bad Wannabe: Ignignokt thinks he is an evil mastermind, but all he does is steal stuff.
- Big Bad Ensemble: With the Plutonians, if one stretches the term.
- Awesome but Impractical: Their lasers can vaporize anything, but they shoot a...
- Painfully-Slow Projectile: Which Carl still manages to get hit by.
- The Chew Toy: Downplayed, but Err tends to meet misfortunes such as being crushed in “Moon Master” and being partially melted in “Mooninites 3”.
- Expy: Ignignokt and Err have the voices and personalities of Baffler Meal Master Shake and Frylock respectively.
- Hot-Blooded: Err will attack anything that bothers him, and a lot of things bother him. But he's really small, so it's no big deal.
- Humans Are Morons: This is the opinion held by Igignokt and Err, believing that they are superior to all life on Earth in every possible way. Unfortunately, they themselves are not all that smart and are always ultimately shown to be dumber than just about everyone they ever meet on Earth--human, food product, or otherwise.
- The Power of Rock: In one episode, they get their hands on the Foreigner Belt--a belt that gives the wearer superpowers based on the band's songs. For example, setting the belt to Cold As Ice gives freezing powers.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The serene and haughty Ignignokt is blue, while the hyper and aggressive Err is red.
- Retraux: All moon people are designed to look like 8-bit video game characters. The original plan was to portray them as refugees from a failed Atari game.
- Rogues Gallery: They're the most recurring "villains" of the show. Their only real ambition is to rob stores.
- Odd Friendship: They are friendly with Shake, though they try to con him as much as they do Meatwad.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Ignignokt and Err are always rambling on about how the moon is superior to Earth, but when challenged on it, they can't even explain why. Ignignokt claims they can jump higher, but they can’t even do that.
- The Stoner: Implied.
- The Slacker: They claim that on the moon, everyday is part of the weekend and they get checks from the government.
- Stupid Crooks
Ignignokt: ...as we commit first degree Grand Theft Coffee Table! |
- Tareme Eyes/Tsurime Eyes: Not their eyes themselves, but their eyebrows. Ignignokt, the calm, cool-headed one has tareme eyebrows, while Err, the excitable, hot-headed one has tsurime eyebrows.
- Viral Marketing: What they were supposed to be in Real Life.
- There was a guerrilla marketing campaign that involved putting up what were essentially Lite-Brites, showing images of Ignignokt and Err Flipping the Bird, around a number of US cities. It ended up being mistaken for a terrorist plot.
The Plutonians (Oglethorpe and Emory)
Pointy aliens from Pluto.
- Anti-Villains: Despite their efforts, they are simply too dumb to do anything malevolent. Emory is actually a pretty Nice.
- Big Bad Wannabe: Oglethorpe seems to think he is an evil genius and conqueror, but really he is simply really stupid and not a threat.
- Big Bad Ensemble: They are almost as recurring as the Mooninites, and they are rivals.
- The Ditzes: Whilst the Mooninites aren't the brightest of beings themselves, it says something that the Plutonians (especially Oglethorpe) easily fall for their pranks in "Spacecataz" and are hardly able to top them.
- Easily-Thwarted Alien Invasion: In their first appearance, they have no real plan. In the second, they intend to "de-terraform" earth, but again lack a proper plan. In the third, they are literally only stealing the Aqua Teens' cable. Frylock's assessment of them is the current page quote.
- Even Stupid Evil Has Standards: They may be idiots, but they cannot comprehend how weird and dumb Master Shake is.
- Eye Scream: Played for Laughs when Oglethorpe tries to activate a retinal scan:
Oglethorpe: Retinal scan, ON! (the laser instead vaporizes his eyes, smoke coming out of their sockets) AYE! DAMMIT! WRONG LASER, WRONG LASER! Why didn't you label them? |
- Fat and Skinny: Oglethorpe is fat while Emory is skinny.
- Feet of Clay: Oglethorpe is initially described as having invented the Insane-O-Flex in the movie, but this is later disproved.
- Flanderization: In their second appearance, they became complete idiots.
- Foreign Cuss Word: ”Segund Vie!”
- Harmless Villain: They plan to conquer the world, but in Frylock's words, they're too incompetent to "take over a damn bowl of Jell-O."
- Hyper Competent Sidekick: Emory is a lot smarter than Oglethorpe, and is much more in tune with reality than he is. Either due to a weak personality, or just not caring enough to say no, he still goes along with what Oglethorpe says.
- Only Sane Man: Emory is a lot more grounded in reality than Oglethorpe. This doesn’t say a lot.
- Poirot Speak: For some reason, Oglethorpe has a German accent.
- Put on a Bus: Only made a few cameos after The Movie, but they're scheduled to reappear in the Season 10 finale.
- Theme Naming: Oglethorpe and Emory are colleges in Atlanta, Georgia (home of Williams Street Productions).
The Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past From the Future
Read his name again if you're having trouble with this one.
- Cloudcuckoolander: He, among other things, claims Santa is an ape who enslaved the elves and robots attacked when Carl was just a kid on Christmas.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: If you listen past the robotic echo, he sounds a lot like the Twelve Ounce Mouse.
- Involuntary Shapeshifting
- Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot
- Once Upon a Time: Thousands of years ago...
- Our Ghosts Are Different: He's not even intangible.
- Overly Long Name
- Hazy Feel Turn: In “The Dressing” Turkatron claims he is the same person who sided with turkeys to fight chickens in the future and was rebuilt into Turkateon to travel back in time. Subverted when it turns out Turkatron is a malfunctioning toy.
Ezekial
Shake's son, or is he?
- Hey, It's That Voice!: Patton Oswalt.
- Meaningful Name: Meatwad names him Jesus Ezekial Jesus, so he'll sound like he's from The Bible.
- Really Four Thousand Years Old
- Too Dumb to Live: "I'm going on an adventure!"
Dr. Wong Burger
A dick with a coat full of mouths.
- Large Ham
- Mad Scientist: For one, he tries to make hips out of things like penises and teeth.
- Meaningful Name
- Running Gag: He always wants to return to his home planet, whether it's Dick Planet, Tooth Planet, or Burger Planet.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: In each of his appearances after "Dickesode", he's modified himself with a different body, changing from a "dick with balls of rage", to a tooth, and then a giant hamburger. He always keeps his face and glasses, though.
Wong Burger Employees
His stereotypically Asian Boo-like employees.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: They sound like Walter from Home Movies.
- Those Two Bad Guys
Happy Time Harry
A cynical, alchoholic doll that Frylock bought for Meatwad.
- Ax Crazy: Downplayed. He has a retractable switchblade for an arm and likes to cut himself till he passes out.
- A Fate Worse Than Death: Shake tries to inflict this on him by tossing him off a cliff to turn him into an immortal Highlander. He points out it won’t work, but gets tossed off anyway.
- Death Seeker
- The Eeyore: A deconstruction. He has turned to pills and alchoho to drown his sorrows and generally makes everyone miserable.
- Killed Off for Real: In his final appearance he gets shot into the air by Frylock.
MC Pee Pants
Whatever form he's in, he has a Batman Gambit to take over the world, but he really wants to be free from Satan. He still has a diaper, yellow eyes, and a shower cap, though.
- Affably Evil: He’s pretty reasonable, all in all.
- Anti-Villain: All he wants is for Stan to stop resurrecting him in different forms or to fit in.
- Cosmic Plaything: In all of the Space Ghost Coast to Coast Universe, he's literally the only character to be affected by Continuity.
- Involuntary Shapeshifting: Satan enforces this on him.
- Insane Troll Logic: All of his plans are based on this.
- Insane Equals Violent: Subverted. He’s pretty easy to reason with, and not very violent either. Most of his plans are not well though out either.
- Meaningful Name
Travis of the Cosmos
An alien spore who came to Earth to get 401k.
- Ax Crazy: People like him because he forces them to with violence.
- Catch Phrase: “I rule you”
- Asian Speekee Engrish: Talks like this because he learned English from a self help tape.
- Lovable Sex Maniac: Yes.
Travis: (to Frylock) You look good in dress. You look better on my floor! |
Markula
The Aqua Teens landlord. His presence makes there be Continuity.
- Our Vampires Are Different
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Actually, four thousand and forty.
- Voluntary Shapeshifter
- Weaksauce Weakness: Garlic, of course, but in the form of champagne.
Dr. Weird
A mad scientist who works out of an abandoned building in Jersey.
- Catch Phrase: "Gentlemen, BEHOLD!!!"
- Chekhov's Skill: In the movie: "I AM A MASTER OF DISGUISE!!!"
- I Am Your Father: Revealed to be the creator of the Hunger Force in The Movie.
- Turns out to be a zigzagging trope as Dr Weird then insists Fry is his father, then Walter Melon shows up and says he's all their fathers. By the time their mother, a seven layer burrito, shows up, nobody except Meatwad even cares and the movie goes straight to credits.
- Large Ham
- Mad Scientist
- No Indoor Voice
- Robosexual: Has a child with a lawn mower.
- Significant Name: Everything that he does is weird, though this could be explained by him living in what once was an insane asylum. His antics include teaching his ass to eat his hand, making love to a lawn mower, sending spiders through the phone lines to telemarketers, tricking Steve into allowing corn to mate with him... twice, using a chain saw to cut off his flesh in order to lose weight, injecting himself with large amounts of barbecue sauce, cutting off his own head so that the blood spraying out of his neck will propel him all the way to Phoenix, asking Steve to agitate a snake coiled up inside his helmet, and much, MUCH more.
- Took a Level In Dumbass: His schemes initially had a point, like making the Rabbot to stop the”vegetable nightmare”. They quickly devolved into lunacy.
- They Killed Kenny: He and Steve die on a semi-regular basis.
Steve
Dr. Weird's exasperated and much-abused assistant.
- Beleaguered Assistant
- Chew Toy
- Deadpan Snarker: Sometimes, though it backfires at one point.
Steve: (wearing a bucket on his head) I’m Dr. Weird. Fill me with barbecue sauce, because I’m dumb as hell! |
