The Phenomenal One, in all his glory.

AJ Styles (real name Allen Jones, born in 1977) is a professional wrestler working for TNA wrestling. His career started in 1998. He is one of the four people (besides Jeff Jarrett, James Storm, and Abyss) who have worked for TNA continuously since its very first PPV. He has won every major championship belt twice (making him a two-time Grand Slam Champion), and is very well known for his high-flying style.

As usual, The Other Wiki has a detailed profile of his career.

The trope list that A-J-Styles Built:[]

  • The Ace: He's strong and fast, an excellent high flier, and he's got some great technical chops, Jack of All Stats + Lightning Bruiser = The Ace.
    • Styles also happens to be the most decorated wrestler at TNA, having been a four time Triple Crown Champion and a two time Grand Slam Champion.
  • Badass: Beating Tommy Dreamer in an "I Quit" match, kicking Kurt Angle's ass, being one of the best parts of TNA every night, yeah, he qualifies.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: A trademark of Fortune in general, especially under Flair.
  • Bash Brothers: When he teamed with Chris Daniels.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't trash-talk his family, especially if you're Samoa Joe.
    • As shown in UpUpDownDown, AJ is infamous for being a Sore Loser. He'll flip and toss a controller the instant he loses.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Challenges The Undertaker to a boneyard match at Wrestlemania 36 after too many times badmouthing his wife Michelle McCool. The end result wasn't so pleasant as AJ, Luke Gallows, and Karl Anderson all found out the hard way.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Gets an absolutely EPIC by calling Immortal out on everything the fans had been complaining about since the start of the Immortal storyline. You could literally hear the fandom rejoicing as the crowd gave him one of the largest cheers in TNA's history.
  • Cool Shades
  • Demoted to Extra+Redemption Promotion: As a face, A.J. tends to be in the upper card; as a heel, he tends to be stuck in the mid-card, playing second fiddle to other more important heels. It's gotten really bad in the Immortal storyline, where he shares second-in-command status with Kazarian under Ric Flair... who works for Eric Bischoff, who works for Hulk Hogan. Yes, Mr. TNA, The Phenomenal One, is at the bottom of the heap and needs help to beat Rob Terry.
    • Now that's he's face again, he looks to have gotten back to being upper card again.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Eric Bischoff treated A.J. very badly, insulting him and even making fun of his hometown. A.J. eventually has enough and breaks away from Immortal, taking all of Fortune with him in a Crowning Moment of Awesome, dividing Immortal's numbers and costing Jeff Hardy the World Title.
  • The Dragon: As a heel, since nobody can out Big Bad Ric Flair.
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Expy: Another Ric Flair one, acknowledged in-universe as Ric mentoring A.J. It may or may not be working.
  • Eye Scream: As a Heel he loves going for the eye, a standard heel trick, except he does it with objects, like pens and forks.
  • Finishing Move: The Styles Clash; also, the Pele Kick which became a meme thanks to Don West's overacting, equally impressive is his Superman.
  • Georgia On My Mind: A proud southerner, A.J. possess a fairly thick accent and is usually portrayed as a heroic character, one of Eric Bischoff's dog kicking moments was him calling A.J. an inbred hillbilly redneck.
  • The Hero: As a Face.
  • Heterosexual Life Partners: With Christopher Daniels. They've even named their children after each other.
  • Hot Dad
  • "I Am" Song/Ear Worm: His entrance theme, shown above.
  • In the Hood
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: As a member of the Angle Alliance. He very rarely won a match, and it got to the point where you just felt bad for him taking second-banana to Kurt Angle, Ric Flair, Kevin Nash, etc.
  • Large Ham: Though not the largest in the business, when compared to the non-Ric Flair members of Fortune he's pretty over the top, Ric Flair's mentoring has improved his previously lacking promo skills.
Cquote1

"AJ Styles is going to make Tommy Dreamer say "Stop it A.J., stop it, I Quit A.J., I Quit!" In AJ Styles's House."

Cquote2
  • Light Is Good: As a face, A.J. goes to the ring with a pure white outfit surrounded by a shower of sparks with an entrance video that's red with a white background.
    • He seems to recognize this. He's always had an affinity for blue, and he tends to wear dark blueas a heel, and light blue as a face
  • Lightning Bruiser: A guy as acrobatic as him should not be able to pick up Samoa Joe or Abyss, or be able to casually stand up while caught in a jujigatame.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: Generally averted, since he's got such a reputation as one of the nicest people in the business today, alongside his incredible talent, most attempts at turning him heel have been lukewarm at best, since you just wanna cheer for him. This is no longer the case when he does turn heel.
  • Memetic Mutation:

Don West: PELE! PELE! PELE! HE HIT THE PELE! IT JUST COMES OUTTA NOWHERE!

Cquote2
  • One of Us: AJ is a video gamer himself. He makes appearances in Xavier Woods' YouTube Channel, UpUpDownDown.
  • Parental Substitute: He has Ric Flair as his.
  • Pet the Dog: He may be a smarmy arrogant showboat as a heel but he is loyal to Ric Flair, and his company, and the fellow members of Fortune.
    • Even as a heel he is portrayed as a consummate family man, he got injured once making sure his kid was alright.
  • Popularity Power: Regardless of whether he's a Face or a Heel, A.J.'s such an awesome wrestler that he will always get the loudest pop.
  • Rage Quit: Only happens outside of the squared circle. AJ is a video gamer himself and made appearances in Xavier Woods's YouTube Channel, UpUpDownDown. Whenever he's playing with other superstars (say, Kofi Kingston) and lose a game, AJ flips and even throw the controller in frustration.
  • Red Baron: "The Phenomenal One".
  • Running Gag: His aforementioned Rage Quitting and controller-breaking antics in his UpUpDownDown appearances whenever he loses a game. Even Xavier Woods calls him out for it.
Xavier: When will you buy me a new controller since you broke mine here in my show?
AJ: It slipped.
Xavier: It slipped?! You threw it... at the stage on the ground! You threw out of the stage, on the ground!
AJ: Well I hope you learn your lesson!
Xavier: What lesson?!
AJ: That you don't beat me on video games and ones that I'm not prepared to play with you and when we should be playing old-school Super... Street Fighter II!
  • The Rival: "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe.
  • Sacrificial Lion: In the Fortune vs. Immortal feud, A.J. had finally regained his chutzpah, turned face and was bringing the fight to Immortal with a vengeance... until Bully Ray superbombed him through a table which paralyzed A.J. Considering A.J. was Fortune's leader, the group was looking rough until a certain individual decided to return.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: One of the few good things to come of his recent heel run; if you're hanging around the Nature Boy, you'd better keep up in the wardrobe department.
  • Sore Loser: Not so much in the wrestling ring, but he's not much of a good sport as a video gamer and it has become a Running Gag in Xavier Wood's gaming channel. Every time AJ loses in a competitive game with other WWE superstars appearing on UpUpDownDown, he snaps and even flings a controller among all things.
  • Take That: Gave one to Batista when he called A.J. a Spot Monkey and not a real wrestler. A.J. said in return, "I think it's funny that a guy who takes a bump and tears his back tells me that I don't know how to wrestle."
  • True Companions:
    • Fourtune.
    • With Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows since their days in the Bullet Club in NJPW and in WWE.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives one to Jeff Hardy over his showing up at a main even match drugged out when Jeff comes back.
